Have anyone tried the new option in NV Control Panel "Optimize for Compute Performance"? It is a new option in drivers 378.49, that improves performance in madVR for me. It is just 1ms but it is something.
Haven't tried it yet - but I have a rule of thumb to not update Nvidia drivers until they are proven stable.
isn't it pretty normal that an uncalibrated screen is subpar.
agree.
Of course it would be calibrated...
Usually they do, but quality may be subpar. Unless you do professional graphics work, buying one of those is generally a mistake.
Now this is what I am curious about. Why would it be a mistake to buy one? Heard this line before and never got around it.
these screen doesn't have a BT 709/sRGB mode/gamut mapping feature?
that would be quite sad.
They do have - but the mapping they come with is really poor - they don't even keep black at 0 and white at 255 - they throw everything off.
If you want videos to look good on an AdobeRGB monitor, you need to calibrate it and create a 3DLUT. But anything outside of madVR will still look off - typically oversaturated.
Now... my question is: Oversaturated or they clip? I can probably live with an over saturated image aka what some might call over saturated - I really love strong colors. But I'm not so sure about clipping colors - for example if large portions of color are rendered at max intensity of that color istead of smooth gradients and nuances.
To create the 3DLUT in madVR do we need another software?

changing a screen from adobe RGB to sRGB isn't supposed to touch black and white what so ever.
of cause both have a white point of D65.

I have some questions I wish someone can help me.
1. I don't watch anime, but I watch a lot of movies. The source I have are all blueray, so the quality are not bad; however, I see a lot of noise on every single movie, which is really annoying! These is the setting I have.https://forum.doom9.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=15729&stc=1&d=1485315360
https://forum.doom9.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=15730&stc=1&d=1485315371
Can anyone give me some advice that what setting do you think is best for me?

Because a general purpose PC is designed to output sRGB, its the default of your OS and basically any application or game.
If your screen uses a wider gamut, any ordinary applications will look "wrong", in the case of AdobeRGB - oversaturated.
You would need color managed applications to properly use any non-sRGB screen, and outside of browsers and "pro" tools most applications are not color managed. For madVR to be color managed, you would need to calibrate and create a 3DLUT.
So if you don't use any tools that actually benefit from the higher gamut, its not worth it for all the downsides you get. Technically madVR could use it to display more colors, but videos are not made in AdobeRGB.
The same problem exists when you get a Rec.2020 or DCI-P3 Mastering Monitor or TV - you can setup madVR to properly handle the colors, but the majority of windows applications will still look "wrong", so using it on a general purpose system is problematic - but in the case of a TV, its main purpose is likely to be used for video playback, so its not a big problem there.

I think I know (?)
Maybe I have a wrong definition of what calibration is though.
About white and black points - Dell built in a tool for calibration to sRGB and using the built in sRGB profile will also shift the black and white so they aren't as good as while using aRGB.
This is what users have said about it - not my own superstition.

Are you looking for improvements of more than 5% - 10% or somewhere around this ballpark?

I like punchy colors - I wasn't necessarily intending of using an aRGB screen for media creation but for consumption - aka watch anime using madVR - thus the question.
One thing I do not understand so far is how saturated will the colors look.
What I mean to ask - there is a difference between colors being saturated, and oversaturated. Oversaturation from what I know is the point where the colors clip to a certain color - where there is no more degree of red for example, but anything over say half red will clip to max red. This is what I want to avoid. If they look punchier and generally good - but there is a difference between different shades - that is not a problem - AMOLED tech does look saturated and usually doesn't really clip colors even though it has aRGB coverage (?)
I am the one asking questions - not answering them - most of those statements are under question and I kindly ask for correcting if I am mistaken about things...

Hm...
I know how it is for laptops since I am yet to enter desktop realms.
For laptops - GTX 1050 ti can be 20-30% better than a 965m thus it is comparable to a 970m or so...
Seemingly the performance in madVR faces an increase, sometime considerable - but in laptops it's problematic to measure - since you have to factor in the noise levels and temperature you're running at constantly - if you want to watch a movie.
Laptops that do offer 1050ti a good cooling solution might be too noisy to use it at full potential for watching movies or anime so you would be left with the option of lowering some settings so it doesn't use 100% of power all the time.
Sorry if I'm not extremely helpful here - tried my best to help you out.

calibration is the process to setup a screen in a way that it is displaying the creators intend. so oversatured colors are unacceptable and mutually exclusive to a calibration.

This is what users have said about it - not my own superstition.
so now they are not "as good as aRGB" they are off anyway without proper calibration.
if the "user" aren't measuring the colors correctly using hardware you are wasting your time reading stuff like this.
it is not rare that bt 709 colorspace with very warm or warm colors is the most neutral "default" setting.
I like punchy colors - I wasn't necessarily intending of using an aRGB screen for media creation but for consumption - aka watch anime using madVR - thus the question.
so you don't correct color at all?
and a aRGb screen i's a bad choice for this. the aRGB colorspace is for the professional use in programs like photoshop not to watch video content on it.
mostly green is way more saturated and the rest stay pretty close to original. this counts for all colors that need green in it.
no video is using that colorspace.
One thing I do not understand so far is how saturated will the colors look.

oversaturation doesn't mean anything is clipped. clipping is a processing issue in the screen image processor. the display technology has nothing to do with this. the display
even with 60% sRGB you don't have to clipp colors they can't be displayed correct but that's it. there are multiply ways to fix a screen with this one way would be clipping.)
madVR doesn't support aRGB output(like i said before a aRGB screen isn't the best choice to watch videos to say it friendly).
this may change if you are going to professionally calibrate the screen using a 3D LUT.
you can get a proper TV for nearly the same price.
BTW. this is the madVR thread not a screen guide :-). other not madVR specific question are answer on this forum too.

Thank you for your help!
Regarding my latest experiments with madVR, it seems like I get the best results for me by not using the absolute maxxed out settings I can, but rather using a conservatory set of setting. Applying just the right amount seems the key for the best image :)

Where can I find that in the control panel? I installed 378.59 on my laptop, which has a GTX 1060, but I don't see that option in the Manage 3D Settings list.
Edit: Hmm, people saying it only exists for Maxwell cards. I'll install the drivers for my desktop's GTX 970 in a bit and see if it's there.
Edit2: Yep, activated it on my GTX 970 for the Media Player Classic profile (after extending said profile to cover the 64-bit MPC-HC as well). Thanks for the tip! I wonder if Pascal cards just don't need it, or if it hasn't been implemented yet.

Hi Everybody!
I'm using MPC-BE + LAV Filters + SVP + FFDShow + ReClock + madVR (0.91.5) with an Ati Radeon RX 480 Nitro and drivers output RGB 4.4:4 Full on Windows 10 Pro at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz.
If I set all the video chain to output at RGB32, everything works fine and Reclock says that the video stream is RGB32 at 60.000 fps; but I assume that FFDShow makes a RGB32 -> YV12 -> RGB32 conversion, because if I leave just the RGB32 input color space in the Avisynth tab in FFDShow, I got an error that indicates that Avisynth needs planar color space. If I check the YV12 box also, everything works again.
So (to avoid unnecessary/unwanted conversion), I set all the chain in YV12, assuming that the final conversion it's made by madVR (at maximm quality) due to the driver RGB 4:4:4 setting: am I right?
If yes, why in this case ReClock says that the input stream is YV12? Maybe because madVR works after the audio/video synchronization made by Reclock?
Sorry for my bad english.

I didn't gain really anything with it enabled, but if I use D3D11 and drop to windowed mode on my 960 there's a whole bunch of blocky corruption.
Disabling it and restarting the PC resolves it. If you're going to test this feature I'd recommend restarting the PC each time you change the option.

I just switched the card, nothing more. No software or hardware changes besides the graphics driver of course. I put the old card back in and all problems are gone. So it's the card.
It could be something on your system that is somehow triggered by the card.
If you really want to be sure, find another PC to put the card in.
If that PC also shows a slow clock, it's the card.
The only way to be sure.

The Ti is slightly faster then a 960, but not to any levels that would be worth upgrading to - but if you're buying new and deciding which to get, I would favor the 1050Ti, the non-Ti is slower.

This is normal, SVP's Avisynth-script supposes YV12 input unless otherwise specified or add a ConvertTo(YV12) in begin of the script.
So (to avoid unnecessary/unwanted conversion), I set all the chain in YV12, assuming that the final conversion it's made by MadVR (at maximum quality) due to the driver RGB 4:4:4 setting: am I right?
Right : if the whole chain is YV12, MadVR will convert this with HQ to RGB.
If yes, why in this case ReClock says that the input stream is YV12? Maybe because madVR works after the audio/video synchronization made by Reclock?
No, the renderer is always the last step, ie MadVR in this case.
If all is YV12 (except after MadVR->display of course), it's to be expected that Reclock reports YV12 ;-)

Hi,
I upgraded my MadVr version to 0.91.5.
Looks like image doubling/quadrupling settings disapeared
I'd like to set up my configuration like that:
Chroma: NGU high quality
Image: Jinc3 + AR
Double Luma: 2.0x or greater - NGU very high quality
Double Chroma: Off
Upscaling refinement: soften edges (1)
Artifact removal - Debanding: Medium/High
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: Off
Dithering: Error Diffusion 2
How to activate double luma / chroma with the latest Madvr version ?
Regards.

go to image upscaling and select NGU then select very high in the drop down menu.
for chroma quality select normal.
at them moment madVR is super sampling often with no real control over it you need profiles to make sure it is only doing it for scaling 2x or high.
if the source needs more than 2x scaling it may super sample no matter what. i personally don't know a way to stop super sampling 720p to UHD or 480p DVD to 1080p with NGU medium or higher.

Ooh. I feel dumb now. xysubfilter wasn't working right because I had the x64 version installed with the x86 version of MPC-HC, and I had MPC-HC's built-in subtitle renderer enabled. Installed xysubfilter x86, disabled MPC's built-in subtitle renderer, problem solved.

Ok i'm stumped on this one. Whenever I play some 1080 WMV videos and I fast forward or rewind the video, it stutters for about three or four seconds, then resumes play, and in that stutter time frame it is not dropping any frames. It never used to happen.
I've lowered all the settings in MadVR for 1080 just to make sure i'm not over taxing my 980ti, not fixed it.
Any idea what's causing it?
The audio keeps playing, but the video stutters for a few seconds at the same time, i've no idea what the clock deviation means but it disappears then has a huge percentage when it comes back.
Just an FYI - my PC is 5820K, 16GB RAM, 980ti, latest version of Windows 10 if that helps.

Sounds like good design logic to me. Keep stress on the GPU low when a large queue isn't needed, then adjust according to need.

Solved my problem! (I think)
Couple posts up - Noticed certain videos were having this ridiculous stutter when I clicked rewind/forward. The audio played on but caused a major clock deviation, so the video stuttered for three or four seconds to match up.
I tried in both PotPlayer and MPC-HC and had the same issue, ruled out the video player. Turned off MadVR and the same videos paused themselves for a few seconds before resuming. Inspecting the properties I noticed both of them had the WMA Pro audio codec. Bit of google and found this:
http://i.imgur.com/ZPKyduJ.jpg
I'm not sure this does, but I selected that filter in MPC-HC, blocked it, and the video now fast forwards/rewinds normally with MadVR as the video renderer. I'd welcome any explanation as to what happened there or if that option will cause problems further down the line. Cheers. :D
EDIT: Thinking about it could that just be a conflicting issue with LAV Audio? Didn't even know I had that installed.

That said I did a short test and despite having XySubFilter set to use the original video size it doesn't work when not using 100% zoom which would contradict the quote. It might be a regression, then. Are you not using 100% zoom or is the file anamorphic?

I'm just watching anime mostly nothing too advanced so I'm pretty sure it's not anamorphic. I already use original video size on XySubFilter beta3 and 100% zoom just now to take this screenshot and still no subtitle shows up on screenshot even though it show up just fine while watching the video.
I'm not exactly sure why this happens though, I tried going back using XySubFilter beta2 again and the subtitle show up but I got the annoying "XySubFilter is outdated" message everytime I start opening a video.

I don't know, then. Looks like a bug. Hopefully in madvr because XySubFilter is mostly abandoned. (But again: it works with 100% zoom for me, XySubFilter 3.1.0.746)

I hope so, I tried doing what you did doing 100% Zoom (Pressing Alt+3) just to make sure and it still didnt do anything for me so that's why I come here to see if anyone knows what's going on

or do screencaps the easy way - use a screencap program to do the work for you. i personally prefer greenshot - it's open source, free, can do lossless png, and best of all it will get you around having to mess with your settings!
