That's a TV problem, not a madVR problem
QBWasn't looking for help on the TV exactly... But trying to understand the outputing and colour.

still having issues with CRU and frame drops, I just didnt leave the movie playing long enough for it to settle down, i'm now getting frame drops every 20 mins and I cant understand why, nothing I do at all changes it, i've tried several settings in optimize nothing does anything at all, its like something is locked on the hardware side on my system and creating a CRU wont even change it.
I even did a new build of windows, same issue, tried a different TV, same issue, bypassed my receiver same issue, has to be a hardware issue on my PC but is should be capable of perfect timing but it just cant do it, I dont understand whats going on.
Its not overheating, its running at a cool 40 degrees, i'm really out of ideas beyond taking a s0dding hammer to this piece of sh!t RX5700 :)
anyone have any idea at all whats going on here or how I can diagnose the issue, unfortunately i no longer have my RX580 so I cant test that, I do have a NVDIA 1050 so I could drop that in to see what happens.

just use the optimised pixel clock +1 and you should be done.

It's indeed interesting to see that FSRCNNX is in the same ballpark as NGU algos. FSRCNNX-16-0-4-1 luma is about the same performance here as NGU Sharp High, while FSRCNNX-8-0-4-1 is way faster.
Well, after playing around with this in mpv.net, it turned out that the above statement is only true when the default "fbo-format=rgba16hf" is used. In this case the performance of:
- FSRCNNX-8-0-4-1: is between NGU Sharp Low and Med !
- FSRCNNX-16-0-4-1: is in the middle of NGU Sharp High and VeryHigh
But when "fbo-format=rgba32f" is set (similar to madVR's internal 32bit processing), then even the fastest FSRCNNX-8-0-4-1 version becomes slower then NGU Sharp High! (A bit faster than FSRCNNX-16-0-4-1 with "fbo-format=rgba16hf")
I've been doing some tests myself related to what I am working on, when I finish I'll post some results with the metrics that I consider most interesting. The performance of NGU sharp very high is usually comparable to FSRCNNX with any metric, the other settings (high, medium, and low) are always a bit below. The other NGU variants produce worse results, but still better than interpolation methods (except NGU soft).
Cheers, I'll be interested in the results. Do you have an ETA?
And it would be nice to also include NGU Sharp Low/Med/High.

thanks I did that but that trashed my entire AMD install, couldnt then load control panel at all, had to do a factory reset driver reinstall, i'm going to have to start ruling stuff out. i'm going to drop in my old 1080p amd in to see what i get with that.

Were you using any custom resolutions in the AMD control panel? Try uninstalling your GPU driver with the DDU utility and reset CRU. Get rid of madVR custom resolutions, too. Then take a look at how many different resolutions Windows is showing for your GPU. It should be showing only the defaults for your display.
You should then have a clean slate, and can rebuild what you want in CRU and madVR (after re-installing the RX-5700 drivers).

Hi, i've never used any custom res at all, ever. First thing I did when I found this issue is wipe using DDU and check what resolutions were showing, all looked normal, i've genuinely chucked everything at this now I'm sure and with dropping in my old 1080p card solving this i'm sure its either the RX5700 or some incompatibilty with my current hardware setup, I just cant find it though.
I'm trying an old PC image again now to see if I missed anythign, i'm wiping AMD drivers with DDU and going right back to lav 072 and MADVR 914 couple with a pre 2020 version of the AMD drivers.

As I mentioned, no issues here.....after 7 mins it shows no dropped/repeat frames @ 2160 23p.....i was pleased at 1 frame drop every 6 days lol.
No AMD or Madvr custom res etc, all standard.

can you post a screen shot of you full CONTOL-J screen, with your setup being almost identical to mine i want to see if we have anything setup fundamentally different, leave it for a good 5 mins though like you say.
let me know what movie it is too so i try playing the exact same one.

@oldpainlesskodi.... what audio renderer do you use? Your values look similar to mine, I gave up trying to get perfect timings and instead switched from "direct sound" to WASAPI.

I'm using Directsound as the audio renderer.
Odd, you have the same card (ish), and I get no repeat/dropped frames using the standard amd 23p (after 5-7 mins).

Very strange....
Could somehow enabling "auto lip sync" in my amp helped with this?

as far as i know madVR store results in 16 bit and 32 bit but math is 32 bit (FP16 is only something new GPU are good at) and it needs directx 11 or other newer APIs.
with close PSNR and other matrics the psnr is not that important but how the human eye perceives it. so it's as always not surefull to judge quality.
so when testing FSRCNNX in the past it wasn't massive worse or something it was just massively slower.
BTW there is also a tensorflow version this version could be up to 8 times faster. if that'S the case it a good reason to add it to madVR.
there is also a FP16 math version of RAVU which at least according to the creator is barely faster but it was complicated to create.
this sounds something totally worth testing.

Maybe... I just did a test with an HDR 4k Remux… I get a frame repeat every 18 minutes when I use Direct Sound.
But when I switch to WASAPI the "clock deviation" in the OSD either reports 0% or is not even reported since it's not measurable. When it reports 0% the repeats go to about 3-4 hours... although most of the time there is no value for clock deviation or drops/repeats.
This is the reason why I stopped chasing the "timing" dragon. Plus getting 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 50, 59, and 60 timings to all work with custom resolutions is a huge chore. CRU will let you change 23 and 29, but not 24 and 30. The only way I found to set custom resolutions for everything was to delete those "standard" timings in the EDID and then set up all 8 in the AMD custom resolutions. Then madVR can do it's optimize thing, and the time involved with it all is just not worth it anymore...

Crazy stuff. Like I said, I use no custom timings for 23p, and with AMD I get no repeat or dropped frames on my set up.
Anyways, when is Madshi back? anyone?...asking for a friend.

mine seems to be locked at 20+ mins regardless of what I do with CRU, I think my card is shafted as with indentical settings, when i put my 1080p AMD card back in I was all back to normal, hours, days in between drops.
When you say you are using WASAPI, where are you setting this exactly?
QBhd
15th April 2020, 16:16
@oldpainlesskodi
I just did another test... I get the same results as you now... Your "amp" comment made me realize that you are probably using HDMI audio. So I enabled it on mine (yes I have it disabled) and set my player to use that (god my TV's speakers are terrible compared to my ancient Logitech's, even though they are actually decent TV speakers, LOL)…. anyway, I then got -0.00036% clock deviation and "no frame drops/repeats expected". At least that answers that.

I use PotPlayer, it is in the Audio Settings and is the Audio Renderer
As for your card, it is working just fine. You just need to go through hoops to get custom resolutions to work. Or use HDMI audio.

Remove all custom resolutions
Reset CRU
Reboot
Open CRU and remove standard timings (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1895131#post1895131)
Reboot
Open madVR and delete any greyed out "identifications" (this might not be needed, but it doesn't hurt)
create new custom resolutions in AMD you can use these as a starting point AMD Custom Resolutions (http://qbstorrents.erebus.feralhosting.com/Doom9/AMD_CRs/)
Reboot (just to be sure)
Play video and optimize as needed in madVR

this is the bit I dont understand about mine, look at my current settings here, it clearly states I should be getting a frame drop every 1.4 hours which I could probably live with but i'm still getting20 + mins, its like MADVR is ignoring my current settings and is continuing to just use the measure timings.
In fact it doesnt matter what I chose from there and reboot it makes no difference to the times shown in screen:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgvFafeelEBikMxK-Bzc4Mz4Y8pFyA?e=zsXZdd
if we could explain this we could probably get to the bottom of it.

How is your HTPC connected to the TV and soundsystem?
This does in fact matter a lot.
mclingo
15th April 2020, 17:11
pretty standard, HDMI ARC, HDMI out of PC to ARC input on reciever, ARC out to HDMI ARC input on TV - I've also tried other cables and another TV, same issue. Nothing has changed in that respect though, its only PC hardware thats changed, if I take my RX 5700 out and put in an old 1080p AMD card all is back to normal, I guess it has to be this RX5700 but OPL is having no issues and i'm confident when I first got the card I didnt have this issue so I cant work out has changed.
I know things can make a difference but we need to explain why I cant move mine off 20 mins regardless of what I do in CRU, are there some details instuctions for using CRU to ensure i'm not missing anything, I've read a couple and it seemed very strasight forward so I dont see how I could.
Klaus1189
15th April 2020, 17:22
Just for testing: Connect the RX 5700 with HDMI direct with the TV and use internal speaker of the TV.
Remember to disable bitstreaming for the test ;)
I don't understand the ARC of your chain. ARC input of AVR is the output to the TV of the AVR, the sound is returning from TV.
For my RX 5700 XT I don't need any custom resolution -> 11,8 hours are good enough for me with WASAPI MPC Audio Renderer of MPC-BE
huhn
15th April 2020, 17:22
ARC ? why would you use ARC here.
you have PC -> AVR -> TV why would there be an ARC involved.
mclingo
15th April 2020, 17:31
thats just the port i'm using, I've always used that one, it makes no difference really, i've tried going straight to my PC and bypassed the AVR on another HDMI port, made no difference.

open CRU and remove standard timings - from where?
please be clear, i've done this a gazillion times, i just need to get it right once :)

In your CRU folder... there is a reset-all.exe... or you can just delete the active and inactive settings for your TV
I have posted the link where to find the standard timings.

yes... those are the timings that are overriding everything. And be sure to reboot... even after a madVR optimization you need to reboot... restarting the GPU is not a sure thing

i cant set 23.975 in AMD, it just drops to 23.000
QBhd
15th April 2020, 18:47
it's tricky... sometimes you have to enter the timings at the bottom first and hit create... then go back in and edit the rest... also be sure to set ALL the values or your 23 resolution may come up as 24
