Try it, change the custom gamut to the wrong coordinate, and see if it takes.

Huhn do you know anything about the 3d output? Can it do 1920x1080 x2?

madVR can only do the standard 3D formats.
so 1080p23 3D using auto.
the rest is very difficult.
and it uses the windows api.

i testing a lot of stuff right now i will not touch these settings. just to be save.

I have never touched 3D stuff, but it might be worth comparing MPC-BE's 3D implementation to see if it has the same issue.

3D was a total letdown when I had the first wave of lcds using shutter.

The new oled pancake lens glasses are way better, no contest, if they had these back then, 3D would've taken off. Even the converted movies look good like Dune. Perfect contrast makes a huge difference.

I'm using the mpcbe right now. The mpcbe thing takes the left and right frame compress to half width, then send, this is how most 3d tvs expect the data I believe.. Madvr has to then stretch it out. I assume there's going to be some texture loss here. It still looks sharp and good, but just wondered if you guys knew a setting so it didn't have to pinch it in the first step.

I can't get 3d to play in mpchc. I just don't understand the steps. The instructions are all over the place and point to some odd combinations.

Are you refering to full-width sbs converted video? Those play no problem, but the conversions are really bad in fast motion. Like the ocean waves in pacific rim, converted sbs, it just turns into large macroblocks, unwatchable.

the following information is about as aged as possible
the real 3D signal madVR supports is full resolution it needs the intel software decoder mvc stuff what ever and or maybe intel igpu.
it was designed to only work with 3D iso blu rays mkv remux was maybe added later i do not remember.

nvidia dropped 3D support offically but it can be modded back in i have no clue about the sate of 3d for the AMD driver for newer AMD cards.

madVR uses the windows api so set yout device to 1080p23 and check if 3D is an option around the HDR stuff you find today if not you may have a windows version which can't do 3D anymore.

Yea, I remember it was a weird setup when I had it back in the day too. I actually think AMD still supports 3D, but it's just as jank as anything else.

Right now, with the pancake glasses, you don't have to do 1080p23, because the glasses just shows up as a 3840x1080 display to madvr. It just outputs straight to it after stretching. So, it's much easier than with TVs that need the blanking in the middle. I was just hoping that if you could remove the pinch, you'd get more resolution out of it.

Hi, been using AMD MVC setup for years with no major issues, yes its defo locked to 108023, there is way around that, I've tried with MPC-BE and Potplayer too. I was tempted to buy some media glasses too until I found out they are only 65inch in real world, my current now nearly 10 year old OLED is 65 and as I watch all 3d movies in a pitch black room its paltry 400 bits is still enough for me.

I also have a quest 3d and 3d is pretty sick on that as you can get an absolute huge screen on that, its like sitting in a cinema and it also does full MVC 3D in some apps, resolution isnt quite there yet though, really need 4k per eye but if my 3D TV dies thats what i'll be using rather than a projector.

MPCbe works with the new crop of oled pancake glasses. They're pretty damn good, and it's almost plug and play. I have the rayneo, but if you wear glasses, get the viture, it supports nearsighted people out of the box. They use the same optical rig but only viture has nearsighted support without buying the prescription lens.

If you buy them on amazon, you can trial run it until January 31st. The 3D is really so much better than any TV/Projector option, it's not even a competition.

I agree on the 65", it's not very big, but you can't get better 3D. It's much higher resolution (visually) than Quest 3 passthrough. Quest 3 is also LCD, so it's limited in terms of movie contrast. SinCity 2 blacks looks amazing on these glasses.

For MPCBE 3D You need a Displayport to USBC active adapter, Female to Female USBC coupler. I think they all sell hdmi docks of some sort, but you probably need your HDMI ports for your regular tv/monitor, so dispp to usbc is better.

Would I get these glasses for anything other than 3D.. For travel definitely, daily drive pc use, probably not.

It's been popular with steamdeck guys, but I don't have a steamdeck.

Natively shot 3D look so good with madvr's scalers. Thank god madvr supports this, it'd probably look trashy elsewhere.

I can see why James Cameron really wanted this to work. The depth does look very good, it definitely feels more natural than flat. Even mundane shots look nicer.

I think maybe we just got used to flat.

Well the screen is flat 2d, but we still perceive depth and 3 dimensionality within the 2d plane. Kind of an interesting feature of reality being able to encode 3d information on a 2d plane.

A while back someone said here that true grayscale is not the same as just fully desaturating the colors of a color image. I would be very interested to know more about this, both as a film enthusiast and especially as I've been thinking lately of shooting material in B&W, which would be following just the aforementioned method of full desaturation (in camera, not in post-processing, just to be clear).

If you, or anyone else with knowledge on this for that matter, would care to elucidate on this a bit (without being overly technical if possible), I would be very grateful. If you deem it too off-topic here, just PM me.

Color affects perceived brightness, it's also used in some cases of edge detection. Therefore, Contrast and brightness and subsequent edge and depth are subject to impact by color.

In general, I think with Black and white you're grading such that the edges and textures are perceived correctly, if you straight up just remove chroma, certain elements look flatter than usual.

It's not a right or wrong situation.

by spec you are just removing Cb and Cr. this is very rarely done because BW is usually done with a tint. the strange love disc i have is maybe one of the very rare Y monochromo H264 BD encodes.

you can press control + shift + alt + F12 in madVR to test.

Using only the Y channel of YCbCr gives black and white image but the brightness won't be representative of the colours brightness in terms of human perception.

There is also YcCbcCrc in rec2020 and ICtCp in rec2100 which has the Y channel at "constant luminance" so in those cases the Y channel should give a representative black and white version of the colour image.

Otherwise you could manually convert YCbCr to Lab and then use the the L (lightness) channel which is a pretty good match for human perception.

It also shows how bad HSL and HSV are, so if those were used for "desaturating" the image then the result will be bad too.

There are probably other ways of doing it too like maybe converting to xyY and using Y channel or shifting xy cords to the middle or something like that.

Yeah the HSL and HSV models are junk, not sure why anyone would use them.

To my knowledge it's ok to shoot colour and convert to grey in postproduction as long as the right formula is used, which is probably what the cameras internal greyscale mode is doing anyway as the sensor itself would still be sensing colour to begin with

There is one manufacturer that I know of that is making a digital camera that is a black and white sensor from the beginning, Leica's Monochrom series. It doesn't have a colour filter array meaning 3x the light and no need to demosaic the image due to interpolation. Of course due to the brand it's also incredibly expensive, but it does exist.

Is this why at least until the 50's B&W film could achieve deep focus in a way color film couldn't?

Not relevant from a technical viewpoint, but the different comparison sets brought this to mind, a development that had to wait until the late 20's to become implemented in a really major way.

But yeah, I think my camera did have an actual B&W mode now that I think about it, desaturation is clearly not the way to go, and hopefully not the way the aforementioned mode goes about it. Have to check the manual again, think I previously just ignored this aspect as I had no intention to ever shoot in B&W.

You can test it, take a challenging photo. Take one in colour and the other in b&w mode and then put the colour one in your photo editor and try different settings to see which one looks like the one from the b&w mode shot.

lower your settings considerable you are dropping frames like crazy.
if that doesn't fix it my best guess is flicker protection but i have barely any clue about tone mapping.

Close to pulling the trigger on a LG G4 — has anyone had any issues with MadVR's auto resolution switching on the G4? I'm asking because...

The second bug causes the occasional black screen when changing resolutions and refresh rates frequently in a short period of time. The only fix for this is to unplug and re-plug the TV in, but this is unlikely to happen with real-world usage.

I'm doing around 10-20 display mode changes per day and this would be a total deal-breaker if I couldn't use it.

If you want the best air CPU cooler that will fit in pretty much any case I would recommend nh-d15s. That's the one I got and haven't had any issues, cools very well and is quiet with a big 140mm fan and 6 heat pipes. I don't think there is a model that cools better and will fit in any case

This feature is flawed, because it doesn't work when changing to/from hdr.
Madvr auto switching should not be influenced by the display tips, model or make.
It can be affected by os/driver/player.

This is why Tp4 uses AMD for movies. Fast/ Flawless HDR switching at least on S90C, can't speak for G4. Did have the G3 briefly, it does black screen if you do it alot, but you'd have to do it alot and you can get it back without unpluging if you have hotkeys set to switch resolutions. In any case, Tp4 can't recommend WOLED under any circumstances due to washed out colors.

More color is something so intrinsic to image quality, you just can't "make due" with less, it doesn't make anysense that you would do that.

Gamut is critical, and woled just looks pale.

I don't mean this maliciously or as a put-down but it possibly might be worth getting an eye exam for colour blindness. It could be that you have some kind of partial low level of colour blindness or desensitivity might be a better word than blindness. I have no idea how the eye testing works or if it's valid, for example if we look at rtings G4 review it shows all Delta's under 5 for HDR, but this result could be bogus if they aren't measuring delta at full saturation levels, just as LED bulbs colour rendering index is bogus cause it looks at desaturated colours and the huge delta errors on saturated reds get absorbed by the low average delta of all the other colours. So if they do something like this for eye exams then the result could be invalid too.
The vast majority of a consumer grade LED bulb look absolutely disgusting to my eyes and nobody else seems to be aware of this so I guess that's what you're experiencing with OLED TVs as well so I definitely get where you're coming from, I am not dismissing what you are seeing with your own eyes.

All I can really say is for me looking at the G4 in person doesn't give me any reason to think the saturation is lacking. The C4 and B4 I absolutely can tell the colours degrading due to the viewing angle limitation — but you said you had G3 MLA panel so that couldn't be it on your case. For me personally the MLA panel for viewing angle stability of hue and saturation is an absolute must have, that is why my only choice is between G4 and S90D. Not even Bravia 8 is good enough for what I'm after. I can see that green cyan shift off axis and I do not like it. I have no idea how anyone watches VA panels either, they are totally unacceptable to me. And yet they are still on the market for 15+ years and selling in large numbers, so the only explanation can be "unit variance" in the human visual system and this I contest is what you are experiencing with WOLED panels.

Edit : also what is the room lighting conditions in your living area
Do you use a bias light? 2700k or colder? I have a Philips hue behind my screen at 80% brightness 2700k.

Edit: and blood tests can be worthless too, they don't check for everything properly, I had vitamin b6 toxicity for a year cause the standard blood tests simply don't pick it up, it was only once I got to a specialist did they check for b6. And you can get false positives for vitamin B12 levels if you eat seaweed but none of the B12 is bioavailable so the testing is all bogus.

You can't buy a new plasma because they took them off the market. Likewise, if they decided to only start manufacturing TN panels then this is what people would buy because they don't have a menu to choose from.

I think the market is going to start entering a manufacturing consolidation shift soon. It wants to move to OLED and the fact that OLED wears out is desirable to them. Doesn't really make sense to make OLEDs along with all the variants of LCD panels with all the variants of backlights like quantum dots, etc. I figure VA will be one of the first to go because for TV use IPS has wider viewing angles and gamers moved to TN for faster response time.

I hope you're right because a high quality IPS can actually be pretty decent in my opinion. I was actually considering the Bravia 3 LED which uses an IPS in some of its sizes because it has 1864:1 native contrast which means for my 120nit peak brightness I'd be getting 0.06 black which is the same as my current Samsung plasma and should look completely fine with my bias light setup. But it's motion processing is shit for gaming, 60hz only, lots of response time smearing and the frame interpolation is janky. But colour accuracy looks fantastic and it's mega cheap so I'm still considering it. Wish they would use IPS in their Bravia 7, but no.

Is Samsung QDOLED more resilient to burn-in than WOLED? Rtings burnin testing reports their S95C was "surprisingly resilient" (https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/longevity-burn-in-test-updates-and-results) to burn-in compared to the other WOLEDs, but I don't know whether to believe that is generally true for QDOLED as a technology. This could be the tipping point that makes me choose S90D over G4 as 99% of my use is HTPC + MadVR and I'm concerned about dropping a bunch of cold hard cash on the G4 and dealing with burn-in down the line when I could drop less cash on the cheaper S90D and avoid the burn-in issue and get the super duper saturated colours for HDR. But then this TV repair guy is saying Samsung quality control has gone to shit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYpuILVtmfQ - and I dont know what to think

Re: The VA panels, it isn't because of variance, it's mostly because people aren't experts and just buy based on price and size and this tends to lead to lack of options. You can't buy a new plasma because they took them off the market. Likewise, if they decided to only start manufacturing TN panels then this is what people would buy because they don't have a menu to choose from.

I think the market is going to start entering a manufacturing consolidation shift soon. It wants to move to OLED and the fact that OLED wears out is desirable to them. Doesn't really make sense to make OLEDs along with all the variants of LCD panels with all the variants of backlights like quantum dots, etc. I figure VA will be one of the first to go because for TV use IPS has wider viewing angles and gamers moved to TN for faster response time.

The market is NOT consolidating under oleds.

In fact, it's moving away from it rapidly because LCDs are killing oled in large format.

Oleds have peaked. Until China decides to turn up J-OLED, LCD is destroying OLED. LG Displays currently, the panel maker is losing money hand over fist.

LCD will continue to dominate because China has unbeatable manufacturing capacity.

It will be a really long time before OLED can compete with LCD on brightness, if-ever. This is a problem because the majority of the market watch TV during the day or with lights on where OLED just can't keep pace.

On OLED if you use hdr eotf, because of the aboslute tone curve, you have to be in a dark room.

If you don't use hdr eotf, for non-dark room, daytime viewing, then the TV basically behaves like a 300 nit peak TV. So everything looks exactly like SDR. You can get away with it on an overcast day, but on a sunny day with big windows, it's unwatchable.

If you want day light viewing, LCD is the only thing that can give an HDR like effect by stretching the mid all the way across 300-600 nits. Then capped with ~2000nit-4000nit highlights.


Oled's advantage right now, (QD oled at least) is Gamut, star-dust type textures, and viewing angle. Unfortunately these are just not enough for the average consumer, they'd rather have bigger and brighter.

The G3 isn't a bad tv relative to something much older, but it's just not very colorful, I've had it side by side with my s90c, it's completely washed out, there's just no color in it in bright scenes. Because of the way abl works, any measurement you do in a patch is not directly applicable to full scenes. G3 also produce weird artifacts near black, and it's not just the chromanance overshoot, it has a poor dithering implementation for near black gradients. Samsung's handling of near black is as good as Sony, their dithering really is that good. This is no small feat. It's very hard to control voltages that small/ precisely. LG's been at it with their oled for 10 years, and it still looks terrible.

So , you have a "more expensive" TV, that is "less colorful" AND with "poor near black handling".

What exactly motivates anyone to buy that? It fails at exactly the thing that OLED is suppose to allegedly "do well."


The 1 advantage G3 (woled) has over QD-oled, is the polarizer. For non-movie enthusiasts who can't be bothered with light control, well, there it is, it's slightly blacker in a bright room.

Huhnhuhn is extremely hyperbolic, he's clearly an autistic edgelord, and that's why we love him. He knows damn well Samsung's QD poops all over Woled, which is why he bought it, but he likes to hate on it because that's just his personality. :D He's the type of guy who has enormous anxiety if any possibility of happiness exists anywhere, his own or otherwise..

I think next year I will be getting a 98" wide angle VA from TCL. I like my 2x 77 s90cs alot, but they're going to the bedrooms. My friend recently got the new QM851 TCL, my god, light cannon, just WOW, like, no wayyyyy..


Finally, I am starting to shift away from the belief that perfect blacks is even possible or necessary due to the need for low voltage dithering. It's not possible to produce true black in near black textures, you can see this is scientifically true as professional oleds are often quoted for 100000:1 contrast instead of Inf:1, why, because Inf:1 is only true in test patches, and not true at the boundaries.

I dont' believe we will ever make oleds or microleds with the tolerances necessary to produce true-black in real texture applications.

The other issue is, even with blackest-black textures, most of the time, when viewing large screen sizes, your eyes blanks them out because the bright on screen elements set the iris, this causes those shadow details to be missing anyway, especially if it's moving.

So, yea, oled will always have the best black for static images, but if we have to sacrific for it, there's a shallow gradient where it's not worth it.

I had a Panasonic WOLED back in 2018 and found the HDR on that was sufficiently bright for daytime viewing but it was on those demo clips like Sony Camping in Nature etc. which were probably graded with an APL boost to impress shoppers.

After upgrading my PC not too long ago, it seems controlling the volume in madVR with the mouse scroll wheel or keyboard arrow keys in MPC-HC feels delayed while playing. The volume percentage is a bit delayed. While paused, there is no delay. There's also no delay using the MPC video renderer.

I feel like I encountered this years ago and it was related to Gsync or something else in the NVCP. I am reasonably sure I did not have this before I rebuilt, but maybe I'm losing my mind. Anyone have any ideas?

For reference, I'm on 207, MPC-HC 2.3.7, Win 10 22H2, GTX 3090, and AMD 7800X3D.

Sorry for asking this here, but since the appropriate forum was closed and was pretty much dead anyway, is there any point in using 16-bit floating point as texture format in MPCVR instead of 8/10-bit integer when my GPU only supports 12 bpc? It changes post-processing to dither in OSD, which sounds good to me, but is it really?
