It's a pity there is no new standard colorspace for 4K resolution and up for PC. There's a ton of 4k monitors with sRGB colorspace and some that support about 98% Adobe RGB colorspace.
I'm still on a 1440p IPS panel that only does sRGB, but am a bit confused about my next monitor purchase. I should obviously go with one that supports 10-bit and Adobe RGB, but how much of Rec 2020 will that be able to show, and what exactly would I select in madvr for calibration? The colorspaces there are all for video, so would I simply disable calibration all together and let my monitor and Windows run in Adobe RGB?
Why isn't Rec 2020 a new standard for PC as well, since sRGB is basically Rec 709.
Any thoughts on the matter? I apologize if it's a bit off topic.

Personally I will never buy another Adobe RGB monitor (and I gave away the one I had). Windows is too stupid to understand gamuts at all, it assumes it is outputting to an sRGB display and never renders to anything else. Very few Windows applications are color managed. For example, all video not sent through madVR will look wrong on an Adobe RGB display (e.g. Netflix, YouTube). Photos too, Windows will finally respect gamut tags but if an image is tagged Adobe RGB Windows converts it to sRGB even if you have an Adobe RGB profile assigned for the display. :confused:
MadVR would work fine with a 3DLUT, you simply calibrate as normal, but there is no content for Adobe RGB (it is still way too small to display Rec 2020) so madVR will simply not use any of the available colors outside the BT.709 gamut. This means, at best, video will look the same on an Adobe RGB or sRGB display.
Also Adobe RGB is not one of the options for "this displays is already calibrated" so you need a meter (to create a 3DLUT or setup yCMS) to get somewhat close to correct colors on an Adobe RGB display.
10-bit sRGB is what you want, with the highest contrast you can get.
Rec 2020 isn't a standard yet because no one has been able to create a display that can display that wide of a gamut for anything like a reasonable price.

Question and a Problem
Why is madvr Locked to SRGB gamut when using a 3D LUT for calibration?
i have created a 3D LUT for a wider colorspace close to DCI P3 that my tv can deliver.
still selecting the P3 3D LUT in the DCI P3 section in madvr it only gets to SRGB gamut.
without the 3D LUT i get the full DCI gamut.
or is it a bug with argyll cms?
it almost seems that madvr doesnt read all the info from the 3D LUT files.
the P3 3d lut and the rec709 3d LUT are alot different and should not get the same gamut.
Edit: i know its a bug with argyll CMS but i want to try to ask here also so i can rule out madvr and have it on paper to show the stubborn argyll CMS creator lol
I'm far from an expert on this but could you explain more about what are you doing / trying to do?
(1) Are you using madTPG to display patches with Argyll/HCFR/dispcalgui controlling? (thus I assume you are trying to measure the effectiveness of the 3DLUT by profiling the display with the LUT active?)
Or (2) Or are you playing back a video via madVR with a colorspace of DCI-P3? (check that madvr is actually getting the right colorspace info from the source file/filter - check ctrl-j stats - the matrix/primaries lines would say what madVR is getting or assuming)
Interestingly, for (1), I just checked HCFR generator options, and there's no option to select which LUT madVR applies. BUT in madTPG there is a drop down top-right that allows you to select the appropriate LUT, so that should work with any tool (dispread/hcfr/dcg etc)

Also, I wouldn't have expected the DXVA native issue to be this serious. If I remember correctly a slight blur was mentioned, but this doesn't seem to be so slight. Not to mention misaligned chroma...
I just recently mentioned that it's quite harmful. :D

Using a Spyder makes it a lot easier too as it does almost all the work for you, including setting Windows to the proper colorspace and so on.
I'm considering upgrading my main system to a Dell UltraSharp 4K UP3216Q, but gaming would become a problem on there. I would be able to view 4K videos in full resolution though, not that those are even available.
If Adobe RGB is a problem, I can simply drop it to sRGB mode.
This whole thing needs to get sorted though before 4K blu-ray gets here. At least madVR supports REC 2020.

I mainly ask because deblocking MPEG-2, YouTube content, and pretty much any encoding will greatly improve the overall image quality much more than debanding ever did.
Low, Medium, and High will probably be better than an On or Off switch, and will likely require testing as usual...but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Yes, because these are graphics applications that are ICC-aware, and have been designed that way because they're often used for color-critical work. This is definitely not true for Windows applications in general.

No they don't. The thing that's counter-intuitive here is that the ICC profile you set in the Windows color options is merely a "suggestion", and Windows doesn't do anything by itself (well, technically it can load the gamma ramps from the profile, but that's only a 3x1DLUT which means it won't fix your gamut). Applications are responsible for asking Windows which ICC profile the display is set to, and are responsible for applying the profile themselves to their own output (i.e. gamut mapping).
Since most developers don't really care about color management, most applications don't bother doing that, and as a result most applications will ignore the ICC profile that you set in Windows color options, resulting in incorrect color.
Now, if your monitor is set up to use the sRGB gamut, this is not that big a deal because non-ICC-aware applications assume sRGB anyway, so it all works out fine in the end. However, if your monitor is set to something other than sRGB (e.g. Adobe RGB), then the output from these applications will be wrong, and there's nothing you can do to fix it. This is why using an Adobe RGB (or DCI-P3, etc.) monitor outside of color-managed workflows (e.g. gaming) is almost always a bad idea.
Note: you might have noticed that setting an ICC profile in the Windows color options does seem to change the output of the entire desktop. You might think that means everything is getting color-corrected, but you would just be confused: that's just Windows loading the vcgt (RGB gamma ramps, i.e. 3x1DLUT) from the profile into the GPU LUTs. That can be used to correct the white point and some monitor non-linearities, but it cannot be used to do gamut mapping - for that you need a full-blown 3DLUT, and Windows currently doesn't know how to apply a 3DLUT to the entire desktop display. It relies on applications to apply 3DLUTs to their own outputs themselves using the configured ICC profile.
Using a Spyder makes it a lot easier too as it does almost all the work for you, including setting Windows to the proper colorspace and so on.
Well, actually, if you use something like ColorHCFR with your Spyder, you can see by yourself that the system doesn't default to the sRGB gamut at all - the applications need to do it.

Really OT, but using wide gamut on non icc aware app is not necessarily "bad" since most of those app may not even have srgb in mind.

Well, these apps had to be developed and tested on something, and that something is most likely a sRGB monitor since that's the most commonplace. Therefore, if one wants to see the content as it was produced, one has to stick to the sRGB gamut unless indicated otherwise.

There is chroma upscaling done, it does this not in DXVA (my standard setting for both chroma/luma) but uses the set algo from chroma upscaling (Bicubic 75AR). Shouldnt there be a DXVA setting be added to chroma, so that in this case the dedicated Intel hardware is still used for the chroma upscaling?

DXVA does everything in bilinear as far as I know, unless I'm wrong.
Better off doing Jinc if you can for Chroma.

This is a bit off topic, but I do have some experience in this area, so I might be able to help...
As has been stated by someone else, there are no displays that can reproduce BT.2020 yet, and to be honest, there may never be... There are actually quite significant problems with producing displays like this, and they're related to metamerism - When you have very narrow bandwidth primaries (BT.2020 requires single wavelength primaries), there are very significant differences from person to person, in how a colour created from those RGB primaries is perceived. This is a biological problem and not something that can be overcome with technology, at least not easily... but I digress...
BT.2020 should be thought of as a container format, rather than a goal to achieve. BT.709 is quite a small gamut, and the desire of many content producers is to create wider gamut content. For digital cinema, the DCI-P3 gamut is standard, and this does allow for some nicely saturated primary and secondary colours that aren't possible with BT.709. There are also many different professional monitors that support P3 colour, so this is where next generation Blu-ray content is likely to end up; BT.2020 encoding, but the data itself, limited to P3.
As for working with LUTs in madVR... I have used 3D LUTs in madVR to output RGB data which utilises the full gamut of a display with a gamut that is wider than BT.709, though I didn't use ArgyllCMS to create them so I cannot comment on that part of the workflow. I have done this with native P3 content, and with P3 in a BT.2020 container content.
When you import a 3D LUT to madVR, it asks which colour gamut the LUT is intended for, and the choice here is obviously important. I tested madVR with 3D LUTs intended for BT.2020 incoming signals, and these LUTs remapped to the native (wider than BT.709) gamut of my display. madVR doesn't know or care what gamut your display is, so what you're trying to do should be possible.
If you're interested in colour accuracy, then you probably wouldn't want to render BT.709 content to a wider gamut display by stretching out the colours to fill the gamut, though it is obviously possible. I'd have thought that if your display is in its native wide gamut mode, you'd want a 3DLUT to re-align the data so that that didn't happen.

I disabled VideoLuts and 3DLuts in MadTPG. Are there any other options i have to be aware of? Used dispcalgui/ArgyIICMS to create a 3DLut.

+1 to this wish :) It's not a high problem in my view conditions, since i use native DXVA decoding, but i note this problem too.
DXVA does everything in bilinear as far as I know, unless I'm wrong.

Use KODI version DSPlayer madVR and the image is fantastic!
I have only one question:
- When customizo adjustments in madVR and send save, he's not saving ....
When I click the KODI again the madVR settings are as standard and the changes I made are not included in the adjustments ....
What can I be doing wrong or not doing?

Problem with DXVA scaling is that it happens with just 8 bit precision which sooner or later has to lead to noticeable banding with gradients.
madVR's scaling is 16 bit (or 10 bit with performance trade off options). 16 bit is not lossless either, but unlike DXVA scaling this doesn't lead to any noticeable banding.
My radical opinion: Really try to get a GPU that doesn't have problems with Jinc AR.
They are not expensive anymore.

What were the settings used for the chroma upsampling and downscaling comparison in the second post?
what type of deinterlacing method does madvr use (vector or motion adaptive)?
I didn't find that much of a difference in the test patterns from the following site using software YADIF deinterlacing from MPC-HC and MADVR deinterlacing :

It's true in general, but if you have intel (as asked in beginning question) and (worse) this intel reside in notebook with poor cooling system - things are changed.

Madvr use whatever dxva deinterlacing use iirc. With amd myself, I actually find overall performance better than using yadif.

Do you have madVR in the Program Files directory? Usually those kinds of problems are because madVR is lacking write permissions to its folder.

This cannot be answered without knowing how you made the 3DLUT. Depending on the options it is possible to create a 3DLUT with Argyllcms which requires the gamma ramps to be enabled, even with them disabled in madTPG, for correct output.
Usually, with any version of Argyllcms from within the last year at least, the 3DLUT will contain the information required and that option is not needed. I would suggest you leave the option disabled (GPU gamma ramps enabled). If the 3DLUT was made expecting not to use the GPU gamma ramps madVR will turn them off automatically and if not they stay enabled and you get correct output either way.
I would be very surprised if it was possible to create a 3DLUT with dispcalgui which should have this option enabled.

ED1 is a bit higher noise but with almost no pattern, ED2 has a bit more pattern but lower noise. madVR's settings page already told you that though. :p
Set your display to 1 to 4 bit and see for yourself. :)
Of course what they look like at 2-bit isn't really the same as at 8-bit.. but there is no better way to understand the differences. When we were testing various dithering options there were a lot of variants of ED dithering. In the final comparison (madshi wanted to settle on one dither option to avoid this type of confusion) we refused to agree. I liked ED2 the most then but many others liked ED1 more. I have since purchased new displays and after testing again I use ED1 now. However, I still like both of the other dither options off (unlike many, why they to default on).
Preference does seem to be up to exact display and/or personal opinion. If you want to make a good choice I suggest you watch something you consider representative of normal high quality video with both options, and pick the one you like best. You cannot go wrong.
Also compare to ordered dithering, ordered dithering was not an option when ED was first released. It is amazingly good for very little GPU cost, if you can increase other quality options by using ordered dithering it might be a very good trade off. Ordered dithering is the lowest apparent noise option by a lot, I can see liking it the most for that reason on a very high contrast display.

If you run "madHcCtrl.exe" out of that directory are setting changes not saved? Make sure settings.bin is not read only, or simply delete it.

Are you using madVR profiles? Try deleting these profiles and starting over.

Kodi with DSplayer takes advantage of profiles in madVR. Every time you launch this version of kodi it forces its settings into its madVR profile (kodi must store settings also separately from madVR somewhere). To alter these separate settings in kodi you must play a video in kodi and then use kodi video settings icon. Once there you can change almost all madVR settings related to the image. You must use and save setting option at the top of that kodi menu once your desired settings are made or they will not be saved. In effect this version of kodi allows you to alter madVR settings without physically opening madVR at all. For this player that is a good thing but there is the side effect you are experiencing which may highlight a potential madVR issue.
I can't for the life of me for example seem to be able to create settings independent of the profiles set up by this version of kodi/dsplayer from within madVR its self. madVR simply won't let me choose the option to make a new profile (greyed out). So while I agree kodi is the source of this situation, there is also an issue in madVR stopping one creating totally independent settings from the profile set up by this kodi version.
Let me give an example of what I mean.... Once kodi/dsplayer has set its profile in madVR, in madVR if I open the processing menu, that first create new profile option is greyed out. The next menu is 'DSPlayer Profile Group' From there I can create a new profile but its a sub profile of this group. The next menu is 'DSPlayer Profile' and under that is all the processing options. There is no way to create a new profile outside of this original DSplayer profile group. This is the issue, but maybe this is the way it should be??
Maybe its a case of kodi naming that lead profile in a way that is misleading, maybe it should not be named 'DSPlayer Profile Group' but something like 'madVR Profiles', I just don't know as I have not taken advantage of madVR's profile options in the past. None the less though the settings changed by this kodi version also change the way madVR acts with other video players.
The solution to this would be madVR detecting the video player used and then using a profile based on the videoplayer detected. On the other side however it can be rightly argued madVR options should be the same over all videos players as quality should not change from player to player. I have to correct myself a little because there is a way to get the kodi player to load in settings from madVR and not use profiles but it is not the default kodi setting and its not well labelled either.... In the Kodi/dsplayer options in kodi there is a setting 'Manage settings with Kodi'. In here if you choose 'Load from madVR active profile' then kodi will work in much the same way other players do, any changes you make in madvr menus will be used with kodi also. I never knew about this setting and I have changed it from the default (which causes the issue above). I'm going to suggest this setting be named differently, maybe something like 'Interaction with madVR'.

If you run "madHcCtrl.exe" out of that directory are setting changes not saved? Make sure settings.bin is not read only, or simply delete it.
I did as u told me but not resolved ....
Are you using madVR profiles? Try deleting these profiles and starting over.

Madvr use whatever dxva deinterlacing use iirc. With amd myself, I actually find overall performance better than using yadif.

thank you for your answer, I have a nvidia gtx 770 so performance and quality wise I'm better with software yadif. so it means cause you are on amd the deinterlacing is vector adaptive.

and how would can your display know it is bt 2020? how to tell it?
HDMI has for some time had the ability to signal BT.2020 colourimetry, as have HEVC compressed files. Many displays already have this functionality enabled, but there is so little BT.2020 content around that very little consumer experimentation has ever taken place.
In my case, I was also able to work with a development firmware for the displays that I work on, which has the ability to manually select BT.2020 even if it's not signalled.
and do you really think your TVs mapping is perfect?
I don't, and part of my work was to test how good the TV mapping was; I developed a test suite of colours for this purpose, and measured the difference between the measured and expected colours to test this.
is the 3D LUt create with or without your normal LUT?
So I was doing some development work on HDR tone mapping, using the 3D LUT feature of madVR for three aspects of this:
Conversion of BT.2020 to the native RGB of the display
Conversion of SMPTE 2084 (PQ) EOTF to the calibrated EOTF response of the display (2.2 Gamma)
Re-mapping from high brightness HDR signal to a lower peak brightness display - this one is by far the most complex, and this is what I was spending most of my time experimenting with
The 3D LUTs that I was building were based on mathematical equations to carry out the three aspects above, and I therefore didn't use ArgyllCMS or DispcalGUI.
I used the display on-screen tools to calibrate the display to 2.2 Gamma and D65 white point, so this was the target output from my 3D LUT.
I could have perhaps concatenated two 3D LUTs, one for initial calibration of the display to a more accurate 2.2 Gamma / D65, and the second one for my HDR work. I didn't do this though.
Although I'm happy to talk about all of this, it is pretty much off-topic. I'd advise anyone interested in the topic of HDR / BT.2020 / Future display standards etc. to either PM me, or start another topic for that purpose.

But I've uninstalled everything and reinstall madVR and MPC, without installing KODI and yet not I save my changes in madVR ....

Than I can't help you... There is nothing in MPC that would cause madVR to loose settings I think.... It will be more a case of madVR not saving the settings period. Youll have to wait for madshi to comment.

1) Go to madVR install folder and launch 'madHcCtrl.exe', then in the system tray open madVR setting and make your required changes.
2) Using the tray icon option exit so it closes.
3) Launch 'madHcCtrl.exe' again and see if your setting are still set.

Kodi with DSplayer takes advantage of profiles in madVR. Every time you launch this version of kodi it forces its settings into its madVR profile (kodi must store settings also separately from madVR somewhere). To alter these separate settings in kodi you must play a video in kodi and then use kodi video settings icon. Once there you can change almost all madVR settings related to the image. You must use and save setting option at the top of that kodi menu once your desired settings are made or they will not be saved. In effect this version of kodi allows you to alter madVR settings without physically opening madVR at all. For this player that is a good thing but there is the side effect you are experiencing which may highlight a potential madVR issue.
I can't for the life of me for example seem to be able to create settings independent of the profiles set up by this version of kodi/dsplayer from within madVR its self. madVR simply won't let me choose the option to make a new profile (greyed out). So while I agree kodi is the source of this situation, there is also an issue in madVR stopping one creating totally independent settings from the profile set up by this kodi version.
Let me give an example of what I mean.... Once kodi/dsplayer has set its profile in madVR, in madVR if I open the processing menu, that first create new profile option is greyed out. The next menu is 'DSPlayer Profile Group' From there I can create a new profile but its a sub profile of this group. The next menu is 'DSPlayer Profile' and under that is all the processing options. There is no way to create a new profile outside of this original DSplayer profile group. This is the issue, but maybe this is the way it should be??
Maybe its a case of kodi naming that lead profile in a way that is misleading, maybe it should not be named 'DSPlayer Profile Group' but something like 'madVR Profiles', I just don't know as I have not taken advantage of madVR's profile options in the past. None the less though the settings changed by this kodi version also change the way madVR acts with other video players.
The solution to this would be madVR detecting the video player used and then using a profile based on the videoplayer detected. On the other side however it can be rightly argued madVR options should be the same over all videos players as quality should not change from player to player. Then it comes full circle to the issue at hand, once you use this kodi version, any changes you make directly in madVR can be altered by this video player when its launched. Yes I understand it now, the way the kodi UI references the madVR setting is not the most clear presently. Even for an advanced user like myself, I got stuck. I have made suggestions in the kodi/psplayer thread about how it can make things easier for its users with a couple of simple ASCII changes.
The way the default Kodi/DS player setting are implemented have implications to madVR users who use other media players (with madVR) and that probably needs addressing in this thread.
In an ideal world my suggestion of madVR being able to use different profiles for different mediaplayers would be perfect for kodi/dsplayer. The player would no longer need a setting on how to handle madvr settings and users of multiple media players would not have to worry about one media player changing madVR settings affecting all media players. Another option would be to allow madVR to be an internal part of a player (like LAV is with MPC-HC for example).
Of course its probably not a discussion for between users and madshi but rather between madshi and makers of media players.
Would be interesting to hear madshi's view on this though and if he would consider such a feature at least.
