I installed the latest drivers, and and i'm getting one presentation glitch after 15-20 min of playback sometimes later, using the default optimal power in the drivers, my settings are:
chroma - jinc AR
image - jinc AR
dithering error diffusion 2
using 3DLUT.
render times are around 11 ms.

guys,
I'm also getting drop frames from time to time. Dunno if its the driver responsible. Switched back from NGU AA high to NNEDI64, so far no frame drops. Will watch more videos to see if frame drops will start showing again

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I've noticed recently that 23.976 content displays like crap on my 60Hz monitor with madVr. You know all these tracking shots ? Well for some reason, I can really tell from one frame to another and everything feels super choppy. I can't remember if it's always been like this or not, but recently it's started bugging me quite a lot.
I've tried enabling/disabling smoothmotion but to no avail.. display settings are set to match when playback starts, and I'm in exclusive mode.
The only "solution" I've found for now is to use mpv with video-sync=display-resample which displays those tracking shots in a much more natural way.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

the closet to video-sync=display-resample is reclock.
smoothmotion should do a way better job with 23p source at 60hz.

That's your problem right there. Smooth motion don't do jack if you're setting your matching content FPS to refresh rate. Switch to 60Hz as Huhn said.

Hi guys. i always used my video card set to a custom resolution when playing 23p content in madvr, set it to 23,977 and 1124 vertical pixels. But for some reason today this was giving me dropped frames, a lot and it was really noticeable in playback.
I deleted the custom resolution and tried with stock nvidia settings, still dropped frames. tried the custom resolution again and still had the frame drops but it was showing "1 frame drop every 3 days" or other huge number like usual, but the frames were dropping and it was counting.
but when i set to not match video frame rate and play in 60hz mode it shows 1 frame repeat every 40 seconds but no frame is repeated or dropped.
I have a gtx 1070 and madvr v0.90.24.
EDIT:found one thing. i set madvr to not match frame rate and set manually at nvidia panel to 23hz. opened the video and it shows no dropped frames at 23,970hz as soon as i enter exclusive mode the frame drops starts.

Don't use exclusive mode then. :p
Win10 often doesn't like exclusive mode.
apparently, i don't have issue with "optimal power" on 378.92 or previous drivers.
This very GPU/madVR settings/driver specific. I get dropped frames or presentation glitches on optimal power with my Titan XP and certain video sizes. Sometimes it is too agressive saving power, madVR is a very choppy load so it can power down after one frame and then take a bit too long powering up for the next.

i thought the dropped frames/presentation glitches are unavoidable.
now are u using prefer max performance?

Adaptive works fine, just Optimal Power is a bit too aggressive in saving power.

Even in safe mode, during sunset/sunrise F.lux still produce dropped frames with FSE.

Humm the more I play around with NGU-Sharp the less I can bear sxbr's artificial look but I can't do without SR(non-AR LL) as I still very much enjoy its effect on motion-blur(in combination with FRC) but bloat becomes quite apparent, apparently 50% AB using non-AR SSIM 2D 100% saves the day but I can only afford this on SD and I'm pretty SOL on 720p........any chance for a bloat-free NGU+SR combo please? ^^
leeperry

Actually, any chance you could allow AB with other downscalers and not just SSIM please?

It looks better to adjust the image to be fully calibrated rather than using Flux and things that shift the colors (?)
At least in my experience, I only like my content while it is color calibrated rather than using this type of color shifter that will make all colors too warm (?)

I don't have calibrator and too lazy to rent it and to puzzle out calibration related stuff. I just use slightly modfied profile for my monitor from manufacturer site.
For me luma noise like compression artefacts is much worse than slight color/white balance shift.

Do you think I can have better settings:
Display: 3840 x 2160p
Card: 1070 GTX
1080p -> 2160p
Chroma: NGU Sharp (low)
Downscaling: SSIM 1D 100% + AR + LL
Image upscaling: Off
Image doubling: NGU Sharp
<-- Luma doubling: high
<-- Luma quadrupling: let madVR decide
<-- Chroma: high (NGU low)
<-- Doubling: let madVR decide
<-- Quadrupling: let madVR decide
<-- Upscaling algo: let madVR decide
<-- Downscaling algo: let madVR decide
Upscaling refinement: Off
Artifact removal - Debanding: Medium/High
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: Off
Dithering: Error diffusion 2
Rendering time is 17 ms

Thanks in advance.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\madshi\madVR and settings.bin/bak within your installation directory.
nevcairiel

settings.bin, .bak is the backup of the previous settings. :)

Thank you guys, this should be quite straightforward.
Anyone has an idea of why in the folder where I've installed madVR (under ProgramFiles X86) I don't find any settings.ini file...? :)
Sorry for the blatant noobiness...
ryrynz
28th March 2017, 11:20
As above, it's not settings.ini. Also if there isn't sufficient access to the folder then madVR can't write the file.
tranfa
28th March 2017, 13:18
Yes, bin. Solved changing the access, thank you for the heads up!

That is redundant, since the settings are also always stored in the Registry.

You're right, but for testing purposes I prefer to handle a settings.bin fil with backup then the Registry....knowing the noob I am.... :o

Can you do an anamorphic stretch with madvr when using 4K @60Hz?
It cant be done on the JVC projectors when using 4K.
huhn

madVR supports anamorphic lens and the image can be stretched with with nearly every player.

What does "doesn't work" mean exactly?
It means when you use 4K with a JVC the anamorphic stretch is greyed out, it doesnt work. However when on 1080p it does work (stretch)

I dont know, I never said that. My original Q was will the A stretch work in madvr when using 4K 60Hz.
Asmodian
29th March 2017, 05:23
The anamorphic lens option does work at 4K for me but I don't have a JVC projector. Is it the activate lens memory number function that doesn't work for you? Where is anamorphic stretch grayed out when in 4K?
It sounds like it is your projector that cannot do 4K in anamorphic, not madVR.

My personal view over madVR is that more people should get to know it!
As much as we're discussing it in here, many people never even heard of it, and many would love to use it in their setups!

Just to confirm, the anamorphic stretch on madvr does work when using 4K 60Hz which is good news.
----------
Madshi, I mentioned some weeks ago that I use the zoom control at for 2.55 movies like Ben Hur to take away the black bars on my scope screen. I have to use, if there are big black bars : ...reduce bar size by 25%, this cuts off too much image. I asked if you could give us some smaller steps 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% which you thought was possible. Do you see this happening anytime in the near future?
Also is there a way for the anamorphic stretch to automatically detect big black bars of scope films and do the "A" 4/3 stretch when it detects a scope film?

I'v been using madvr for a while... i just want to thank madshi for doing a truly incredibly job with this. It would be impossible for me to watch videos on my pc without this renderer. Now, i can't watch movies anywhere else but my pc because of madvr, lav filters, etc.
My heartfelt thanks.

I feel the same way, just wish HDR would work. Especially now with creator's update and nvidia supporting it, for the first time I saw the "An HDR Video is playing" on my samsung from my pc. Just wish I could get it to work with madvr.

How many is "a lot"? Do you see the cadence breaks and dropped frames? Or is it just the meaningless statistic in the OSD that bothers you?
You are right, if I remove the OSD stats, I must say that the video is playing well. I watched a lot of videos recently and they all played really well. I'm just thinking about buying a more powerful machine to use more feature of Madvr! So, that's all for me, thanks for the support!. On your homepage, it doesn't have an option to donate for your work but feel free to ask, I'll be please to give a small amount.

This will only happen when madvr becomes a 'set and forget' type solution (possibly bundled with all the key av players so its all made available in one go - no hunting around to find the add on etc). JRiver's Red October HQ setting is the sort of thing that would appeal to mass market.

I found an issue when I activate deringing filter. It adds a lot of aliasing sometimes.

Trying to find a good default, so this is my current settings, i mainly watch blu-ray mkv rips and Webrip:
chroma upscaling: NGU AA
image downscaling: cubic bicubic50/catmul-rom, no AR filter
image upscaling: NGU sharp medium (doubling)
upscaling refinement: none
Do i change the downscaling from bicubic50 to 150 like i read in some posts here? And check the crispen edges in refinements?
