Btw. in case presentation glitches are driving you crazy all of a sudden: There seems to be an issue with the latest Nvidia driver or drivers when polling power sensor with tools like GPU-Z or Afterburner.
I've always had dropped frames with GPU-Z. That's why I use other tools like OpenHardwareMonitor or HWiNFO.

@madshi, screenshots scales the cropped image to the encoded video size when a screenshot is taken.
e.g. If a 1920 x 1080 video which is cropped to 1920 x 816 by madVR, the screenshot will scale the 1920 x 816 image to 1920 x 1080 and the screenshot comes out vertically stretched.

This is what I have come up with, so far, for viewing anime (I admit, that I have no issue, with heavily processing anime, for my personal preference).
GTX 1070 + madVR + Samsung KU7500 (65” 4K)
use original source resolution (almost all anime is 720p); 10bit is preferred (smaller file size; enhanced color); NVIDIA control panel (usually, 2160p30); Viewing distance: 7-8’
madVR settings (example, with average quality 720p source):
10bit & above; switch to matching display mode (2560x1440p23)*
artifact removal: reduce banding artifacts (medium/medium), reduce ringing artifacts (yes), reduce compression artifacts (1), process chroma channels, too (yes), reduce random noise (2), process chroma channels, too (yes)
image enhancements: sharpen edges (3.5), crispen edges (no), thin edges (3.5), enhance detail (no), LumaSharpen (0.55), AdaptiveSharpen (0.3), linear light (no), activate anti-bloating filter (50%), activate anti-ringing filter (yes)
chroma upscaling (NGU Sharp, very high quality)
image downscaling (SSIM 2D – strength: 100%), scale in linear light (yes), activate anti-ringing filter (yes, strict), activate anti-bloating filter (no)
image upscaling (NGU Sharp, very high quality), everything else let madVR decide
upscaling refinement: sharpen edges (3.5), crispen edges (no), thin edges (3.5), enhance detail (no), soften edges (1), add grain (no), LumaSharpen (0.55), AdaptiveSharpen (no), activate anti-bloating filter (no), activate anti-ringing filter (yes), SuperRes (no), refine the image after ever 2x upscaling step
use Direct 3D 11 for presentation (yes), present a frame for every Vsync (yes), everything else unchecked
Error Diffusion – option 2, use colored noise (yes), change dither for every frame (yes)
trade quality for performance (all unchecked)
rendering: 34.00+, no dropped or repeated frames
image is very sharp & artifact free
Using, 720p, anime sources, plus, 1440p, resolution, results in, higher image quality, than, using 1080p, sources, or switching to matching modes, 1080p23, or 2160p23. 1440p, is a compromise, allowing better picture quality, than 1080p, while also allowing, madVR enhancements, at very high settings, which is not possible, with 2160p (unable to use some, madVR enhancements, or at least, only at lower settings). Also, for some reason, the Samsung, seems to prefer, upscaling 1440p, vs 1080p (?). MadVR, with higher settings, improves clarity, so much, that it is superior to native resolution, with lower madVR settings. For me, anything more powerful, than a GTX 1070, would not be utilized, for 720p anime, at least (GTX 1080, or 1080 ti, would only help, with, 1080p & 2160p sources). I thought, that using native resolution (2160p), would result in the best image quality: in my opinion, this is not true, with a GTX 1070 & 720p anime.
I also use win10 (customized win7 layout), plus 388.00 Nvidia Drivers & I have had no issues, at all, with win10 (including all updates), or the newest drivers, although I do not use HDR & have not yet calibrated (high on my list). Note: Some of my anime, looks simply awful, without madVR & with it, looks like 4K anime.
In summary:
No issues with win10; No issues with 388.00 drivers; 720p over 1080p anime sources; 1440p over 1080p or 2160p resolution. Any questions, or advice, are welcome.

madshi always Listen well to madvr users, and Respond to all queries, questions and problems,and he spend alot of time and effot for that for many years since first madvr version.

Now madVR has the screenshots feature, but screenshots taken are still pitch-black... Am I missing something? I use Print-Screen. I haven't found any other hot keys associated to taking screenshots within madVR's User Interface - Keyboard Shortcuts section...

It takes some kind of mirror screenshot... NO amount of rotation makes it like the original image... Is there a way to take normal screenshots that copy the image as is and don't create some mirror copy? I am doing it to a TGA image and the BMP image madVR produces is the mirror image of the TGA image...
EDIT: OK, I can deal with this issue with Paint.NET
I use MPC-HC x64 (latest) and noticed together with madVR DDS images look very different compared to how they look in Paint.NET. Is that due to DDS format?

What would be the recommended setting (Best quality wise) for image downscaling from 4k bluray source material to 1080p? Jinc with "scale in linear light" and anti-ringing filter activated?

Nothing wrong with Jinc and yes use 'scale in linear light'. Bicubic 150 and SSIM 2D are other popular options. "Best quality" is subjective, you're asking for opinions nothing more.

I am trying to get the "custom mode" function to work, but I seem to be getting nowhere. When I select the "Optimize" button, it immediately takes me to the "optimize timing parameters" (I have never gotten to the measurement part, which I thought it would do first?!). When I select a timing with "no frame drops/..." and high compatibility, the display seems to sync up, indicating it would work - but what should I do next? Regardless of whether or not I choose to restart pc or "reset gpu" button, the display mode reverts back to what it was before and I no longer seem to have an option to trigger the suggested custom resolution. Where is it supposed to show up? In Nvidia Control Panel, I sometimes get a "PC custom resolution" (though never if I restart the PC, then there are no other than the standard resolutions and refresh rates to choose from), but if I select it and playback a movie, I get the exact frame drops as when I started out (one drop every 5 min). Am I missing something here? How do I actually get MadVR to start the measurement process in the first place?
On a side note, the only thing that has changed for me when trying to get this to work, is that I can no longer choose 2160p24 in the Nvidia Control Panel (only 23 Hz, 25, 30 etc shows up in the scroll menu...). It does however show up under Nvidia's "add custom resolution" though, but this still gets me the 1 drop every 5 min. I am running latest MadVR with a Geforce 1080 Ti. Nvidia Drivers are the ones that still work with HDR (so not the latest but from about a month ago). I am running everything through a Marantz AVR, connected to both an OLED display and a projector. Could it be the AVR that messes things up?

Did you maybe forget to list the modes madVR is allowed to auto-switch to? If your new custom resolutions are 23hz and 50hz, for example, do you have "2160p23, 2160p25" in the box on the first tab?

I find it hard to believe it'd be throttling harder than a mobile chip in a laptop but I'll try to get someone with admin rights to help me out. Probably difficult though since all of these monitoring programs require administrator rights to run, not just install.
No luck on the monitoring tools yet but I've managed to get the drivers updated to latest and that didn't help. What I have noticed though is that the machine only has one RAM stick - as I understand it the performance of iGPUs rely heavily on RAM bandwidth so could this be the culprit?
One thing I have changed is the VRAM allocation, increasing it from 32 MiB to 256 MiB. Doesn't seem to have improved much.

Is there a maximum limit? Because that's your problem right there. Add 3dlut to the mix and 1 GB might not be enough.

i have some iussue...
my htpc start and its already in HDR mode (my tv is a LG 65B6V) and it ok.
So i start to play the movie and it stay in hdr mode (i see the "hdr on" message), but when i double click on mpc-hc and it go to full screen not always stay in HDR mode, i mean the hdr mode go away....and i have to switch to full screen/windows mode several times, double cliccking, before i see "hdr on" in full screen mode....wondering why!

I think 512 MiB is the maximum. I won't be using anything fancy like 3dluts at all, just basic scaling with smooth motion. This is just increasing the amount of DRAM that can be used by the iGPU though so I'm sure bandwidth is important also. I also ran madNV12Test on the system and got these results:

madshi, any chance of adding a method of changing the OSD font size? Playing/Paused in the upper left are fine, but on a 2160p 65" screen, the duration and progress times on the FSE progress bar in the bottom right are almost impossible to read from a reasonable distance.

I have multiple remarks and questions and it is sometime difficult to search for similar topics in all the previous pages that go very fast to be filled !
I have tried the custom modes. It works fine but i had 2 minors troubles with it :
1. we do not know really if an optimization is in progress when we wait for , at least, 30 minutes, to check the result. Is it possible to add a flag on the screen to show that optimization is on process ?
2. once , an optimization is done (but not done correctly , for example , during only 5 minutes), it seems impossible to clear the first result and go for an other optimization. Again it is not clear in case of a second optimization launched, if it is really launched and will replace the first one.
I did not found where these datas are stored on the computer. Could you give more information how to clean an optimization ? (because if the custom mode is removed and created again from scratch, the result of previous optimization is re-used and displayed)
For the 0.92.8, i have tested the modification done on "reduce compressions artefact" and "reduce random noise".
For RCA, it is better because the adjustement is more precise.
At the opposite, the RRN seems too much heavy compared to 0.92.7. (even at 1)
For Adaptive sharpen, the option LL is not clear because it removes the sharpen added by the algo itself. In fact, i do not understand this option and maybe i miss something about the added value of this new option. Is there a section where the LL behaviour is explained ?
And the last :
On this post https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1271417#post1271417, it is explained how to configure profile rules but i do not know how to use it to switch between 1 profil done for bt2020 and the other one done for bt709 since it is not present in the "Supported boolean values" list.
Is it done using "hdr" ?

Just doing a follow up about my problem with black screen in madvr. Is all caused by windows 10.
The problem is ocurring on Fall creators update.
Going fullscreen just shows a black screen and audio keeps playing fine. This is solved by enabling D3D11 in madvr, but with this other problems appears. Going fullscreen at 24hz and hovering mouse on seek bar the video start stuttering, and when going back to windowed mode the screen shows a static image, is the last image before going fullscreen, the audio still works fine. On 60 hz this do not happen, but the stuttering on seek bar still happens. Tried on 385.69 and 388.13 nvidia driver, same problem.
Today i installed windows 7 to do some testing and none of the problems happened, madvr worked fine even without D3D11 option selected. No black screen, no stuttering when hover on seek bar and video plays just after returning from fullscreen.
I don't know why MS screw windows so bad like this.

You do not want it to be in HDR mode always. You only want HDR to enable when there is HDR content and then switch HDR off after. If it is not working like this, when you watch non HDR content the colors will be wrong.
If you have a nvidia GFX card the last driver that I know of where this works correctly is 385.41
My advice is don't set up your htpc to boot directly into HDR mode, let madVR handle turning it on and off.

Enabling reduce compression artifacts and/or reduce random noise with NNEDI3 chroma (image is fine) upscaling crashes madvr. Win10 x64 GTX 1060 388.00. This doesn't really affect me but I thought I'd mention. Maybe someone else can reproduce this?
Crash report? Please try 385.xx. Newer drivers are known to be buggy.
Not directly related to madvr, but I have a question for you madshi because you have a jvc projector like me. Do you have some panning flickering playing at 23hz? I know that is normal for film content (there is flicker at the theater too) but with my jvc the effect is more apparent on some bright high contrast movies like for example Everest. Do you think I will see any improvements in motion if I play a movie with a high end player like the oppo 203? or it will be the same because of the projector?
"Flicker" is something *completely* different to "judder". What you describe sounds like judder, but you say it's flicker. So I'm not really sure what you mean or how to reply.
When I try to do 23hz, however, the monitor accepts it and plays just fine, but when I try to save I always get the "GPU did not accept" error message.
GPU driver issue.
I can set up 23.976hz using CRU 1.3.1, and it works fine, but of course I get no optimizations. What are you doing to set custom resolutions that is different from CRU, and is there anything you can change so that the GPU accepts the resolution?
I'm using Nvidia/AMD/Intel private APIs, while CRU does an EDID override. These are totally different solutions.
Which version of AMD driver is currently the best for madVR / Win8.1 / HD7850?

"worth to use" is very subjective. Generally, when doing video playback with madVR/LAV, CPU sits mostly idle, except when using very specific features like black bar detection, copyback video decoding etc. So generally, the CPU got nothing to do with which GPU you choose. At least not for video playback.

I can reproduce it with "crop black bars" activated. You can uncheck this option for a temporary workaround.

Most people seem to find "reduce compression artifacts" to work better than "reduce random noise". So it might make more sense to increase the "reduce compression artifacts" strength and instead disable "reduce random noise". That will result in less GPU power consumption, too.

There are too many sharpening algos in madVR. Of course you can use them all, but it's usually better to pick one you like to use that with a higher strength, and disable the others. But if you did image comparisons to come up with the settings you selected, then that's fine with me.
chroma upscaling (NGU Sharp, very high quality)
I'd say chroma is not that important, so I'd use high quality, only. But then, if you have GPU power to spare, why not high quality, as long as you don't have to compromise elsewhere because of that.

Image enhancements sharpen the image before upscaling, upscaling refinements sharpen after upscaling. If you have the GPU power, sharpening after upscaling usually result in better quality. So I'd suggest to do that (maybe increase strength there) and disable image enhancements. However, if the video doesn't happen to need upscaling, then you'd get no sharpening that way.

Print-Screen doesn't work in FSE mode.

That sounds very weird. I don't get any mirroring on my PC. This may be specific to the madVR settings you've selected, but I'm not sure. DDS? I don't even know what that is!

When you "test" a suggested optimized mode, can you afterwards apply/save it? Or does madVR complain that the GPU didn't accept it?
Can you please make a screenshot of your "custom modes" tab in the madVR settings? Please upload it somewhere else and then link to it here. Don't attach the screenshot here, doesn't work.

The "download" numbers should mainly only matter for LAV "copyback" decoding, which will probably not work well for you.

It's on my to do list, but not with a high priority atm.

Every time you restart video playback, measurements are also restarted. They are stored in the registry, but only if video playback runs totally uninterrupted for more than 10 minutes. New measurements always overwrite old.

Deleting a custom mode should also remove the measurements. Are you sure that's not working? Measurements are stored in:
HKCU\Software\madshi\madVR\DisplayModeMeasurements

v0.92.7 at strengths 1 and 2 did practically nothing, they pretty much left the image unchanged. So it's clear that 0.92.8 at strength 1 does more.
For Adaptive sharpen, the option LL is not clear because it removes the sharpen added by the algo itself. In fact, i do not understand this option and maybe i miss something about the added value of this new option. Is there a section where the LL behaviour is explained ?
It's a technical difference whether sharpening is applied in gamma or linear light. The result looks slightly different.
On this post https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1271417#post1271417, it is explained how to configure profile rules but i do not know how to use it to switch between 1 profil done for bt2020 and the other one done for bt709 since it is not present in the "Supported boolean values" list.
Is it done using "hdr" ?

Just doing a follow up about my problem with black screen in madvr. Is all caused by windows 10.
The problem is ocurring on Fall creators update.
Going fullscreen just shows a black screen and audio keeps playing fine. This is solved by enabling D3D11 in madvr, but with this other problems appears. Going fullscreen at 24hz and hovering mouse on seek bar the video start stuttering, and when going back to windowed mode the screen shows a static image, is the last image before going fullscreen, the audio still works fine. On 60 hz this do not happen, but the stuttering on seek bar still happens. Tried on 385.69 and 388.13 nvidia driver, same problem.
Today i installed windows 7 to do some testing and none of the problems happened, madvr worked fine even without D3D11 option selected. No black screen, no stuttering when hover on seek bar and video plays just after returning from fullscreen.
I don't know why MS screw windows so bad like this.
I keep telling you guys to use Windows 8.1.

The "high" option is quite a bit slower. At very low strengths I don't see much of a difference, but at medium to high strengths, "high" quality does look a bit better to me. What do you guys think?

Is there a maximum limit? Because that's your problem right there. Add 3dlut to the mix and 1 GB might not be enough.AFAIK the setting for video memory in the BIOS is only used by Windows XP and previous versions. With Vista and later, iGPUs can use dynamic memory allocation.

I don't know why MS screw windows so bad like this.They want to be able to display their "Game bar" over all games including those who use Exclusive Mode, that's why they had to make Exclusive Mode not-so-exclusive anymore starting from 1703. They keep trying to tweak it to make it more compatible while at the same time minimizing performance loss and graphical glitches but it seems it's not going that well.
I personally never had any problems on any hardware with madVR in Windowed Mode on Windows 10, but I don't use 3D and I don't have other stuff using the GPU when playing movies.

After quick look, i think (RCA high) can keep some image details deeper and alittle bit noticeable than (RCA med), and the quality difference become biger noticeable if we add some sharp after image upscaling.
definitely (RCA high) is nice quality option for every one looking for quality befor Anything else.
edit:
in very bad real world Source, (RCA high) can treat the edges lines better than (RCA med).

I'm trying to avoid 4K stuff using it, for some reason all settings are driving my GPU crazy, until I get it replaced, i'd like MadVR to work, but ignore all 4K content, or deactivate/disable based on a file name. Is that even possible? I use PotPlayer as my media player.

That's something the media player would have to handle. You're asking it to use a different renderer for different types of content. You should ask the Potplayer folks if such a thing is possible.

Turned-off, "reduce random noise" & increased, "reduce compression artifacts" (high). Turned-off, "image enhancements" & increased, "upscaling refinements" (fewer sharpeners). Results: lower render-time, even with, NGU sharp, very high, chroma & luma,with significantly improved image quality. Thank you!

No! Using anything but the native resolution is a very bad idea. Nothing in madVR is worth running a non-native resolution and the results would not be similar at all.
Turning up NGU quality or high for reduce compression artifacts are very minor improvements compared to the terrible quality from running the wrong resolution. Resolution is absolutely the last thing you would ever touch to get playback working. Switch to EVR before dropping the resolution.

Use it only on the content that needs it most.. so ~480-720 Vres for the post part. Didn't see much of a difference at low strengths.

When you "test" a suggested optimized mode, can you afterwards apply/save it? Or does madVR complain that the GPU didn't accept it?
Can you please make a screenshot of your "custom modes" tab in the madVR settings? Please upload it somewhere else and then link to it here. Don't attach the screenshot here, doesn't work.
I managed to solve the issue I was having, here's what I did trying to optimize 2160p23:
- I started a 25Hz movie in order to *not* get the "you cannot edit the active resolution" when doing the following:
- Under "custom modes" tab I deleted the mode I was trying to optimize (2160p23)
- I then had to also delete 2160p23 in the regular "Display Modes" tab
- Under "custom modes" tab, I edited 2160p23 - test mode - success - reset gpu - optimize
- go back to "Display Modes" tab, I add back 2160p23
- Close the 25Hz movie
- Start a 23 Hz movie
- Wait 30 min
- Start the 25Hz movie again - choose to optimize the 2160p23 custom mode - choose a timing with no dropped frames - Test mode - success
- Close
- Start a 23 Hz movie, wait a couple of minutes - no dropped frames for 2-3 days - iterate the process if I want to
So to summarize my thoughts as someone who was doing this for the first time and using your guide: It seems I have two options when doing this iterative process, either I edit the custom modes when playing a movie with the framerate I am trying to optimize in the background (alt A), or when playing a movie with a different framerate than the one I am trying to optimize (alt B). The intuitive way is to do alt A, which is where I ran into most problems. If I choose to test a mode with the desired timings, I will get the "you cannot because of this being the active mode"-message. The only way to get around this (as far as I understand?) is to, say, have the display running in 60Hz (or something other than 23 Hz), and then delete the 2160p23 under "Display modes" - go to Custom Modes - optimize 2160p23, test, success, now go back to the "Display Modes" tab and then once again add the 2160p23 - close the program - start a 23Hz movie. Since this alt A seems to be the intuitive way of doing this as a newbie, the big problem is having to delete the 2160p23 mode under "Display Modes" tab, in order for the "optimize" button to work without getting the "activate display" error message - and then *adding it back* directly afterwards before closing and then starting a 23Hz movie again in order for MadVR to do its calculations when running an optimized mode.
That's why I choose alt B, which is totally counter-intuitive - because why would I playback a 25Hz (or 30Hz, it doesn't matter) movie when I am trying to optimize a 23 Hz mode? Well, because this lets me access MdVR settings and go into the "custom modes" tab, choose to optimize 2160p23, test mode, success - *without having to delete the "2160p23" under the "Display Modes" tab everytime I want to iterate the process*. I then, off course, close the program and start a 23 Hz movie to let MadVR do its calculations - close program - open a 25Hz movie - and do it all again.
Maybe I am missing something? This could be solved if I could edit MadVR settings *without having to playback a movie in the first place*. This way I could be in 60Hz, edit settings, exit, and then start a clip which forces the display into the mode I am tryng to optimize. Is there a way to do edit MadVR settings when not playing anything? If not, I would suggest that MadVR tells you (or the guide) that if you run a 23Hz movie in the background, and this is the mode you want to optimize, you have to delete the 2160p23 under the "Display Modes" tab everytime you want to iterate the process - and then adding it back directly afterwards once you have tested the new timings under "Custom Modes" tab.
I apologize if I have missed something basic, but like I said, as a newcomer this is how I approached it, and the guide didn't tell me that I needed to do this "delete the mode under display modes tab, go into custom modes to test timings, go back into display modes tab and add it back" - then playback movie to calculate - iterate.
On another note - I saw some comparison screenshots of blu-ray upscaled with NGU compared to UHD bluray that only has 2K Digital Intermediate - and the NGU ones were clearly better. So congrats Madshi - you officially beat Hollywood. :thanks: so much for all your effort, it is truly appreciated!

Go to your installation folder of madVR. There you´ll find madHcCtrl.exe. Double click and now you should see the madVR icon in your system tray and you have access to madVR without movie playback. :)

So I'm not an expert at these things but constantly trying to learn what I can.
I have a Roku Ultra and when playing 4K HDR material from Netflix, my projector reports:

There is no banding and everything looks excellent!!
Now I also use madVR for all my personal movie playback and I'm wondering what is the output to set? I have an Intel Nuc7i5BNK with Windows 10 and I set the Graphics Card to "Full Range", madVR output to RGB (0-255) and then my projector is set to Auto. Everything looks correct to me in terms of black levels etc...but I'm wondering if what I have set is the best possible setting to avoid banding and any other issues. Currently my projector reports

Color space should be left at RGB. If there is an option in your PC's video settings for 12-bit instead of 8-bit, toggle that on. If you press ctrl+j during playback, you can see what MadVR is doing (and frametimes info etc.).

Thanks Cinemancave. I don't have any option to set 12-bit in the Intel Graphics settings :( I wish Intel would add that control in the future.
