View Full Version : madVR - high quality video renderer (GPU assisted)

Will the screenshot functionality be implemented anytime soon-ish? Would be really nice to take screenshots without switching back and forth all the time. I searched this thread a bit but haven't found anyone discussing it so I figured I'll ask. Hopefully it doesn't get asked every week...
Also, I posted this in the PotPlayer thread - sometimes the OSD shows output resolution being bigger than the output/source resolution. For example, 1920x1080 video shows output being 2048x1080. Sometimes the height dimension is negative (e.g. 2048x -1080). I was told in the other thread it's OSD printing out wrong values or something along those lines but it only happens with MadVR, when I switch to EVR Custom Present the values are correct.

I don't know if it is normal, but I have constant crashes playing 4k video on madVR.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0m1XmvBey8 -Life in the Garden sample.
This thing occurs only when madVR enters fullscreen mode, video playback stops and when I try to resume it player crashes, in window it's fine, tried both fullscreen exclusive and fullscreen windowed mode, with/without D3D11.

Hi all,
I dont know if this is a bug of madVR or MPC-HC, but changing refresh rate with madVR refresh changer when a video file is opened results in a freeze of MPC-HC ( without any message ). MPC-HC is not responding then and needs to be closed or removed from application processes in the task manager. If the refresh rate changer in madVR is not active, there is no issue with opening files.

It works fine for me on MPC as well, but not on Daum Potplayer, that's why I wrote player and its version number in my post. Personally I prefer Potplayer over MPC, and it would be nice if madvr could be more stable there.;)

Your file plays fine here, so it's not PotPlayer + madVR problem.

I don't think so. Obviously we have different hardware, I guess you're on ATI, and I am on Nvidia, and the actual problem is that software is incapable of maintaining its stability on both systems.
I've set the same filter chain as yours except reclock and did some screenshots.
Here is how it crashes, got it when it was in the window.

And this screen shot was done with LAV video in software mode before player stopped working.

Also I don't understand why madVR uses so much video ram here.

628 MB for a 4K source file?
What numbers are you expecting?

16th January 2012, 07:33
Sorry to jump in here. This is not critical, but out of convenience I do most of my HTPC configuration via Remote Desktop. After installing madVR on Win7 MPCx86 + LAV CUID, I get this error: "madVR reports: -creating Direct3D device failed (8876086c)." Everything works fine connected directly to the console; however, it would be nice to be able to configure madVR remotely, even if the video can't be displayed...

Well, SoBizarre got only 206 mb gpu ram used on his system on exactly the same file.

Silly me. :D
Anyway, the 4K file doesn't crash either, but there is massive amount of dropped frames - with such high resolutions madVR is just too demanding for a laptop with Nvidia 420m. :(

Plays fine here using MPC-HC 3970 / Lav 0.44 / MadVR 0.80.

I can give it a try, but 31435 is itself unstable, thats why I am still on 1.5.30857.
Update:
I tried both 1.5.31435 and 1.5.31490, the problem is still here, main difference is that on 1.5.30857 I got straight crash just after madVr entered fullscreen mode, and on 1.5.31490/1.5.31435 I had to wait for some time, or exit/enter fullscreen mode several times. :(

Forget what I said before :
I could also reproduce the problem using the latest PotP.
After getting the issue 15-20 times, I could finally get an error message : "failed to reset Direct3D device". (=MadVR message)
Could you please put MadVR in debug mode (click on "activate debug mode") and create the problem just once.
Then exit PotP without doing anything else. You'll find a new file on your desktop.
Just zip it and upload it to Mediafire. Post the link here together with all info about your system so that Madshi can look at the file to see what's wrong.
I'll do the same.
PS. Just for clarification : the 4k file plays fine on my PC using PotP/ LAV 0.44 (splitter + audio + video) / MadVR. I have no dropped frames, 1-2 glitches when opening/seeking).
My CPU has still a lot of headroom and doesn't even start to swet : Intel 970 (6+6 cores @3.6 Mhz, 12MB cache on die, 24 GB DDR3 3-fold (triple) channel 2000 Mhz certified RAM) NViidia GTX-570, Lav-video runs in 12 threads
The lock-up/crash from PotPl only happens after a lot of pause/play sequences (mixed with seeking) in FSE. (20x-30x pause/play in FSE should create the problem)

Remote Desktop doesn't allow access to GPU at all, its a well known problem.
I too use RDP with a second user for my MCE maintenance but not for any installations, that all has to be done locally for the above reason.

It does. I've had DXVA video decoding over a remote desktop session.

You can access the Direct3D devices, however the RDP session does not create its own, which means you can access a DXVA decoder, however you cannot display a renderer window because the renderer needs to be shown on a screen with its own D3D device

Meaning that madVR won't initialize over RDP?

Correct, it doesn't have a D3D device to work on.

Other renderers (EVR, VMR-9) display video over RDP, and I thought those also used D3D.
Edit: @Snownight26, did you change your config in any way to make that work?

That has nothing to do with madVR. madVR is a VIDEO renderer. Nothing to do with audio.

yes they are. you could change the chroma resizer to catmull-rom. gives me sharper results. or just do some avisynth processing.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused with DXVA support. Is it now possible to use madVR with GPU acceleration on an ATI card? Tried mpc-hc 1.5.3.3965 with Microsoft's Video Decoder and LAV Video but it didn't work (ATI 5670).

It is possible with one of the newest LAV Video preview versions that can copy the DXVA decoded picture back into the RAM, but its stable version does not have that feature yet.

Yes it is possible, you can use cyberlink video decoder in HAM mode, either DXVA Without Rendering mode in Daum Potplayer. Both work fine, but consume more resources than pure DXVA.

When I try to play MKVs (standard definition dvds) in MPC-HC using Madvr, I get the message "Madvr Reports: deinterlacing failed" when I press control J.
The error just repeats over and over in red text and there is no other information on the screen.
The MKV plays, but I want to know how to correct the error.

The Windows Visa/7 audio engine does not introduce distortion. In fact it should be bit-exact if the input sample rate matches the configured sample rate.

I think it's a bug since I don't have it with EVR or Overlay. And I would not understand why madVR would need to write datas to disk:
http://i.imgur.com/zKqqT.jpg
To achieve this, you just have to launch a video (with madVR default settings for example), look at your task manager, you will see this happening rather quickly. But even if it were normal during playback, it is persistent when video is paused. This is what makes me think it is a bug.
Sorry if I'm totally wrong. I'm just a basic user trying to read numbers he does not necessarily understand. :D

Not sure if this is the right place for my query or if I should go over to the PotPlayer section.
Here is my problem: when using Madshi as the Video Renderer, the brightness & contrast controls of PotPlayer do not work. However, the controls work perfectly if I use "Auto Selection" (in other words let PotPlayer choose the Video Renderer)
Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Note: I am using the exact same configuration proposed by imouto (http://imouto.my/configuring-potplayer-for-gpu-accelerated-video-playback-with-dxva-or-cuda-and-also-high-performance-software-decoding/comment-page-5/)
Thanks for your help
