After playing around with power schemes, turning reclock on and off, trying another decoder, and generally having no luck, I believe I have found the issue. It appears that if I make the HDTV primary monitor, then disable the desktop monitor, playback of 23.976 material at 24Hz with Reclock is perfect with FFdshow/Reclock/MPC-HC/madVR (defaults w/3Dlut). No stuttering and no dropped frames. Quite stunning, really.

As and aside, I also discovered that with Aero on, EVR-CP exhibits the same problem as madVR in the dual-mon setup (desktop primary @ 60Hz, playback secondary @ 24Hz). With Aero OFF, EVR-CP works great with this setup.

Does the display refresh rate indicator in the OSD show correct information? Does it behave differently to 0.12?

0.12: http://thumbnails31.imagebam.com/8276/41aeff82751632.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/41aeff82751632) 0.13: http://thumbnails11.imagebam.com/8276/76f5fb82751634.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/76f5fb82751634)

that's w/ Reclock in auto(24fps) mode + CoreAVC CUDA, ffdshow audio+video running avisynth/winamp2 plugins. I've got a 3.5Ghz Q9450 and 2GB of PC8500 DDR2 running on XP SP3 w/o a pagefile.
I've tried CoreAVC, DivX, MPC-HC internal decoder and ffdshow. None of these decoders show that problem for me. Which decoder are you using? Can you please make sure that you have the latest version of that decoder installed?

actually it only happens w/ the debug version, no garbage video w/ the regular distribution. using the latest CoreAVC CUDA for decoding + ffdshow post-processing.

This is an issue I mentioned about with aero and a duel monitor setup. you either turn aero off or have the refresh rate of the primary display matched to the secondary... In your case secondary of 24 would mean primary of either 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, etc would be smooth with aero on

I tried quickly the last version of madvr and indeed it is quite great and interesting. The last blocking point for me it's the missing subtitle pin renderer.

I know you was searching information about it and how implement it. I Hope you find them!

I have some videos that don't have a 1:1 sample AR, but madVR doesn't stretch them as other renderers do.
The videos are large, maybe I can cut out some small piece if you don't already know what's wrong.

With MadVR 0.13 - tearing at 23.976/24hz with Aero OFF seems to have been fixed. Unfortunately, for me at least, its been replaced with unwatchable stuttering. Now I get stuttering with or without Aero (W7, ATI 4550).

Madshi you're a genius ! Tearing at 23.976/24.000hz is completly gone for me (Win XP SP3 -> so no Aero, ATi 4770), i didn't had time to check the new version more deeply, but fixing the tearing issue is a *big* step imho and if i find the time i will try to switch to madvr full time now - thank you very much for your ongoing support madshi !

I need samples. The more the merrier. The samples can be very short, they just need to be long enough so that I can reproduce the wrong AR. Usually 5-10MB should already be long enough. Please upload samples only if VMR9 and EVR show AR right and madVR shows it wrong. Thanks!

Ok, it seems that some people report improvements with v0.13, while others are having new problems. I need more information to find out where the problems are coming from. So first of all let me list the reported problems:

(1) leeperry (#2826) has very slow switching between windowed and fullscreen. Plus, after switching playback runs at a much too slow pace and eventually stutters. New problem with v0.13. NVidia 8800GS. XPSP3. 96Hz display refresh rate.

(2) namaiki (#2829) has stuttering when playing 24Hz content with 60Hz display refresh rate when using Aero, but has no problems with 30Hz content. New problem with v0.13. NVidia 9600m GT. win7 x64. May be caused by Speedstep?

(3) Frank K Abbott (#2841) has unstable playback / stuttering with CoreAVC. Not known whether it's a new problem or not. ATI Mobility 4570. XPSP3. 1080p60.

(4) cyberbeing (#2848) has massive lag + occasional crash when switching between windowed and fullscreen. New problem with v0.13. NVidia 7800GTX. XPSP3. 1080p120.

(5) 6233638 (#2857) has non-smooth playback when using Bicubic for chroma upsampling. New problem with v0.13. NVidia 9400M. Unknown OS.

(6) iSeries (#2866) and dansrfe (#2867) have unwatchable stuttering. New problem with v0.13. iSeries: ATI 4550, win7. dansrfe: Unknown GPU and OS.

Whenever you report a new problem, please always list the following information:

(1) GPU.
(2) OS.
(3) Aero on/off.
(4) Display resolution + refresh rate.
(5) Single or multi monitor setup.

A request to all madVR users: Could you please try to reproduce the problems listed above and report whether you can reproduce them or not? And when you do so, please list GPU, OS, Aero on/off etc. Doing that will help me finding out where the problems are coming from.

Thanks!

7800GTX 512MB
Windows XP SP3
Crashed Happened when going from Fullscreen to Windowed using 1920x1080 @120Hz. It appeared to be caused by the massive lag.
Still get massive lag (multi-second delay) when going Fullscreen to Windowed or Windowed to Fullscreen using 1600x1200 @96Hz.
Single Monitor

I believe this may be the same problem Leeperry has.

8600GT 256MB

Single display (dual setup but switching)

v0.12 brought me some problems with 3DLUT usage, with a big increase on rendering times, which led me to turn it off.
I tested v0.13 yesterday and this seems to be solved. Probably it was the leaking memory problem.

Now I have a new problem: the rendering times are too high. I only can watch a blu-ray movie using bilinear downsampling, any other algorithm is too much for my GPU. I think I might have to start thinking in buying a new graphics card...

I also want to add that madVR has improved a lot over 0.11. Now we can pause a movie and step frame-by-frame very smoothly. Furthermore, the movie I saw yesterday was completely smooth, without any glitches.
Good work! :)

win764bit
aeri on
1680x1050 60h (30hz when there is the 2n monitor)
2nd monitor 1680x1050 30hz
player used: latest mpc svn

with evr sync the wmv files work correctly

also with kmplayer and madvr same problem

I can reproduce this. When using the WMVideo Decoder DMO filter for video, the playback counter stays at 00:00 according to MPC-HC. Playback is fine with ffdshow video.

Also, if I'm running ForceWare 195.62 and have Aero disabled, I can't start up MadVR and the player will freeze (didn't check how long, or if it recovers).

9600M GT (Forceware 191.66), Windows 7 x64, Aero on, 1280x800x60, single.

I have the same problem as 6233638. Problem happens when trying to play a 1280 x 720, 24 fps h.264 mp4 file.

1) ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4570
2) Windows XP SP3
3) Aero off (N/A)
4) 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
5) Single Monitor setup
6) CoreAVC 2
7) ffdshow audio decoder
8) Haali Media Splitter

madshi,

I have ATi and no CoreAVC, so I can only help with (2) and (6). I don't have a copy of 0.12 so I can't compare now, but after try out one 30fps file that I have, it stuttering with almost every scaling, so I don't think mind is the same as namaiki (but not too sure about that). For my regular 24fps material, as posted earlier, I only need to change chroma to Softcubic100 and have smooth playback for 720p. I do get some stuttering for 1080p, however.

Info:
(1) ATi 3870 with 512mb ram
(2) Windows Server 2008 R2
(3) Aero on
(4) 2560x1600 + 60Hz (madVR stat say ~59.80).
(5) Single monitor setup.

By the way, I just recently discovered that I somehow get no stuttering on 0.13 when I lock my CPU at highest multiplier instead of Speedstep as usual.
edit: ^ After further checking, it doesn't.

CPU usage is under ~40%.

I tried quickly the last version of madvr and indeed it is quite great and interesting. The last blocking point for me it's the missing subtitle pin renderer.

I know you was searching information about it and how implement it. I Hope you find them!

Regards.

I am also expecting adding subtitle support
this is something interesting in mpc-hc svn:
http://mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc/trunk/src/subtitles/SubtitleInputPin.h?revision=1785&view=markup
http://mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc/trunk/src/subtitles/SubtitleInputPin.cpp?revision=1982&view=markup

not sure this is really what you want, since I am not familiar with the code
maybe you could take a look

madVR's "Connection media type" from its input pin seems a bit odd now.

The horizontal sizes are being rounded up to either 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096.

1920x1080 video = 2048x1080 Connection media type.
1280x720 video = 2048x720 Connection media type.
848x480 video = 1024x480 Connection media type.
640x480 video = 1024x480 Connection media type.
480x270 video = 512x270 Connection media type.
240x180 video = 256x180 Connection media type.

Since it appears to be purposeful, why was this change made?

Ah, I use MPC-HC's internal splitter since Haali's give me other problems.
But all other renderers display it properly, only madVR doesn't stretch it.

My setup:

GPU: ATI Radeon HD4850
OS: Win7 Ultimate x64
Player: one of the latests SVNs of MPC-HC (I'm not at home, and I can't remember the exact number). Tests made too with KMP.
Decoder: CoreAVC 2.0
Aero: on
Display resolution + refresh rate: 1920x1080@24/50/60 Hz (depending on source)
Single or multi monitor setup: I've got 2 monitors connected to the card, but only one is enabled at the same time.

At the moment, I haven't had any issues with madVR 0.13 (I had one with yCMS, but that's being discussed on it's own thread).

I have watched my first stuff with madVR 013 and I love it... 25fps at 50hz... Zero stutters or tearing, 23.976fps at 23.972... Zero stutters or tearing. In madvr I have the anti trearing fix disabled, in reclock I have vsync correction enabled.

I did come across a small issue. It seems that reclcocks vsync correction does not work correctly on a secondary display unless you fully disable desktop composition. Simply disabling aero by disabling transparancies does not work (like it does with haali). You need to go control panel, system properties, advanded system settings, performance settings. Then uncheck the desktop composition box and apply (this is win7 btw).

Is there any way the option in MPC-HC to disabled desktop composition can be used with madVR? Its currently greyed out when madVR is the renderer. If not the option added to madVR's render settings to disable it only while content is being played would be a real nice addition for us duel monitor users.

From this point madVR is my default renderer, great work madshi!

Though I don't really know what kind of advantage Haali's splitter gives... and madVR still shows wrong AR where others do it right.

(4) cyberbeing (#2848) has massive lag + occasional crash when switching between windowed and fullscreen. New problem with v0.13. NVidia 7800GTX. XPSP3. 1080p120.

To add a few more details to this. When the lag occurs there is massive stuttering of the audio, and if the lag lasts longer then about a second, the video will occasionally fast forward very quickly from the very beginning of the video to where you left off.

And possible good news?

Using the madVR [debug].ax appears to completely eliminate the lag going from fullscreen to windowed and windowed to fullscreen.
I've tested and re-tested over and over, and the 'debug' build really does seem to be a night and day improvement over the 'release' build.

The bad (or is it good as well?) news is I was able to reproduce the crash going from 1920x1080 fullscreen to windowed with a 1920x1080 display resolution. This suggests it is not lag related but rather resizing related. As you may know, 1920x1080 video on a 1920x1080 screen gets resized to a funky resolution when going to windowed mode using MPC-HC.
http://www.mediafire.com/?dz5wizwirzg

I've also run into another problem which caused a hang when opening a video with MPC-HC. I believe this problem may have existed in prior versions of madVR as well. Or for all I know, it may not be madVR to blame at all.
http://www.mediafire.com/?m1odwiezzjm

In the mean time, could you please quickly release a 0.13 debug build with logging disabled or optional logging so I don't have to have massive logs generated every time I watch a video? For the time being I've just put a blank "madVR - log.txt" on my desktop and made it Read Only.

- I can reproduce fullscreen/windowed switching leading to crash.

- 24p is smooth on 60Hz output

- switching media player from one screen to the other while video is paused, leads to a flickering ghost frame when you resume playback

- 0.12 was stuttering badly with 1080P (GPU load > 90%), now it's fine with 0.13.

Any reason why .013 will not work with the Nvidia Purevideo decoder ? Works fine with .012.. Nothing but a green screen playing SDdvd's from media portal unless I use a different decoder. The Arcsoft decoder works, but stutters, slow, lags, until I change from windowed mode to full screen. I also lose the deinterlacing that Nvidia comes with.

Now that would be really strange if you found the 'stock' version better when I find the 'stock' version completely unusable. The 'debug' version was my savior, and works much better on my end.

If the 'debug' version has all optimizations disabled, I would lean towards madshi's compiler making stupid optimization choices with his code changes, which could definitely be a cause of the noticeable difference between the two builds.

on most movies the debug version gives me this: http://thumbnails29.imagebam.com/8262/fed60382613685.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/fed60382613685)

the picture doesn't move and trying to seek freezes KMP, but yes going FS<>windowed seems a bit smoother indeed...no hard computer lockup like w/ the stock version.

PS: yes stock 0.13 really freezes hardcore when going FS>windowed...the whole system's locked for 15/30 secs.

I know my GPU is a bit slow, 7600 GT 256mb and Core 2 Duo E6600, but I've noticed a slowdown in 0.13 especially if I use Spline36 resizer and going between windowed and fullscreen mode (720p movies). hi, I just wanted to share my findings with the latest madVR version...

GPU: ATI Radeon HD3650
OS: Win7 Ultimate x32
Player: Zoom Player + Reclock
Decoder: mostly ffdshow (for SD-content)
Display resolution + refresh rate:
- 1st monitor: LCD 1280x1024 @ 75Hz
- 2nd monitor: (extended desktop) LCD-TV 1280x720 @ 50Hz

using v0.13 at default settings...

Aero off (currently preferred):
- PAL content (25fps) plays flawlessly on both screens :)
- non-PAL content (e.g. 23,976fps) drops frames on 2nd screen every few seconds and is therefore unwatchable; everything's fine on 1st screen though.

Aero on:
- PAL content plays flawless on both screens
- non-PAL content: no dropped frames but ongoing stutter on both screens (more noticeable on 2nd screen)

my previous experience with v0.12 was very pleasing and with Aero 'off' non of the above listed problems (playing content at a not exact multiple of refresh rate) existed and everything went smooth. I know my GPU is not the fastest one but it gave me perfect results until the recent version.

madshi, I have uploaded a sample that displays in the correct AR with renderers other than madVR.

It should fill the screen 16:9 and does, just not with madVR. Forgive the 68mb file size. If its too large I'll try to make another sample from it. Its the trailer for "The World Is Not Enough".

Once i figured out the "aero off" thing with dual-mon, IMO, there is no comparison: 23.976@24Hz with Reclock (vsynch off) is unbeatable.

Thanks madshi for 0.13.

As far as Iīm concerned, this is the best madVR release ever, as it runs great @60Hz and all of the bugs (memory leaks) I reported have indeed also been fixed. This is also the most stable release ever, since I have not had a crash related to madVR at all, even though I often switch between videos, while still playing them. Itīs also very responsive, at least with KMPlayer.

I get absolutely zero dropped frames (thanks for CTRL+R!) with 23.976fps, 24.000fps, 25.000fps or 29.970fps content with a 60Hz display refresh rate. I also played 2 movies for about 30 minutes and didnīt have one dropped frame. This is probably because my GPU is fast enough to handle everything that madVR throws at it and Iīm not using reclock.

What I could detect with 0.13, however, is that max stats(5s) sometimes quickly goes up from slightly above average values to about 5-10x the average stats values and then after some secs it just kind of "resets" itself to the slightly above average values again and it stays there. This is not reproducible at all, unfortunately. But this is not a problem at all, since thereīs absolutely no skipping, I can detect.

Maybe this is either attributed to the GPU switching power states (or rather clock states), because the load (e.g. on the shaders) occasionally gets higher (too high) and that will trigger it, or e.g. if there is a delay somewhere (present<->rendering) the GPU needs to keep up and it needs to show every frame in a very short amount of time, because madVR tries to synch again. In this case the load would be higher and it would explain why max stats shows 5-10 times higher values, since 5-10 more fromes than average need to be presented (drawn) to the screen in a very short amount of time.

More when I find the time or other things that may be worth reporting.
