It's a 4k 60hz monitor from LG. Other renderers play at the video's native fps so why can't madvr?

because it is.
madVR can't play a file outside the original FPS.

so make a screen of the OSD.

Anyone knows of a practical solution to use madVR with HLG high dynamic range content?

huhn
4th June 2023, 12:29
the current "solution" is intended behaviour.

if you want to use HLG use something else pretty much everything does it better.

hi what is best setting to make it similar like dmitrirenderer? i download madvr but its so many settings to play with.

they have nothing todo with each other.
demitri renderer is not a video renderer.

they don't do the same things.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. What is the current "solution"? It seems to me HLG material is played back in SDR.

huhn

yes SDR fallback is madVR solution HLG playback.

i ask about it and the answer to HLG to HDR10 and HLG tone mapping was no this is correct.

HLG plays fine in SDR for me. I am not sure why it needs another solution. The format itself was intended to be able to be played in SDR.

huhn
5th June 2023, 18:21
because you could play it back correctly.

why tone map with madVR when your end device can do it too. same reason and more.

Playing back HLG in SDR is lower quality then an actual SDR file, or playing it in HDR.

The "intended" compatibility is a last-resort kind of thing so that something happens that doesn't look overly wrong.

People expecting to play content in the intended high quality is not all that confusing.

huhn

does HLG have different rules for tone mapping or is converted HLG to HDR10 with 1000 nit flag a relative save way to display HLG accurately forever?

SirMaster
6th June 2023, 15:21
Weird. HLG looks really great in SDR for me. I saw no issues with lower quality on my projector. It looked as good as good SDR or HDR tone-mapped. I watched all of "His Dark Materials" this way.

huhn
6th June 2023, 15:35
it is mastered for a 1000 nits.

it like HDR10 100 nits with very very basic tonemapping applied when played in SDR.

highlights are just a washed out joke.

?!? Because it's an HDR format too. And if one plays back HLG content on an HDR screen, I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation to get HDR results...

the only reason madVR shouldn'T be able to trigger HDR should be a broken HDR page try the newest beta if this doesn'T fix it a screen of the OSD may help.

Personally I'd change whatever would be needed to to get SSIM 2D. You won't need debanding for the majority of ur content so I'd disable that.

Hi.
I downloaded the chroma res test pattern. Based on this pattern the Sony A80L Oled can do 422 and not 444. But if I try other chroma test patterns like Extron or rtings it gives me 444.
What is the truth?

Asmodian
22nd June 2023, 16:37
That magenta chroma res test pattern is a lot more definitive than other chroma test patters, less subjective. However, it needs to be used without any sharpening or blurring and at native resolution or it doesn't work (true for all chroma res test patterns).

Use the chroma res test pattern on a monitor that is definitely 4:4:4. If another display cannot show the 4:4:4 clearly like that it is doing something bad to the chroma.

The Sony A80L cannot do 444. I think these modern displays do some 'reconstruction' of the chroma after or as part of processing in 4:2:2, so other test patterns look better than 'raw' 4:2:2, but they are not preserving full 4:4:4 chroma (some models can turn off the 4:2:2 processing and some cannot, Sony cannot :( ).

Hi I know most or some people here will think this is stupid but thinking of getting a RTX 4090. Not just for MadVR though of course. I game a good amount too. Still I will use it with it, MadVR. My question is will there be anything it can't handle with MadVR a RTX 4090 ?

Also one last question should I be careful using MadVR with a RTX 4090 or is it safe ?

ryrynz
1st July 2023, 04:48
Nothing stupid about getting a 4090 it's been repeatedly stated as being one of the better cards to choose this generation. Using it is perfectly safe with madVR and you could achieve pretty much anything you want with it. In saying that a lot of the higher end options are close to or are basically placebo so don't feel the need to max the card out.. Take advantage of the headroom for less noise output.

If no updated version is released the choices will be b113 (no expiry) or start using mpv (https://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1988875&postcount=47) (amazing progress with HDR tonemapping these last couple of weeks).

amazing progress with HDR tonemapping these last couple of weeks

Could you elaborate on that?
I spent many days setting up mpv to behave like MPC-HC after the previous outdated madVR kept crashing MPC-HC. I love mpv for non-hdr stuff now (especially anime with Anime4K (https://github.com/bloc97/Anime4K) or FSRCNNX) but at least back then mpv couldn't even come close to madVR's tone mapping.
If it does a better job now that'd be great. It is at least nice to have a competent backup media player that behaves the way I'm used to so either way I'm glad I went through the trouble.

Let me simply say that I'm now quite happy to switch to mpv and never worry about madVR expiring again. The link I posted above provides a quick how-to to get it installed. The AVS support thread is also quite active.

But mpv does not offer this new renderer as a standalone direct show filter - right? Or am I wrong?

no
it's possible that someone can spend time and make it so but isn't directshow over its expiring date anyway?

maybe we get one day a mpcVR which uses libplacebo maybe not.

So it is neither a replacement nor an alternative for madVR

I don't have any problems with direct show filters. I watch everything on my 4k TV with it...

I think discussions like this better go to this thread

If you want HDR to SDR tonemapping or want to use an external player for Kodi then mpv is both a replacement and alternative to madVR. If you still want to use MPC-HC / BE then no.

Is it possible to use the profile auto select rules so that it cycles through my profiles, which are set from most to least demanding processing-wise, until it finds one that renders the video at below a certain value (based on average stats, not max)? Or is it only possible to use parameters present in the file itself?

No, that is not possible.

You can get the same results, but with a lot more setup and testing. Figure out the max resolution at 30 and 60 fps for each profile. The rendering times are dependent on the resolution, and you need to render a bit faster than the frame time. This method is very reliable, if a lot more work to configure.

Auto picking profiles sounds good, but it would make startup odd. Would it run every time you started a new file? It would be especially difficult to do given the way GPUs dynamically clock up and down depending on load. How many dropped frames should it take before madVR decides to switch to another profile? Starting up a 4K 60 fps video could be annoying if it had to step through all the slower profiles before settling on the fast one every time.

@MidnightWatcher: This is completely wrong! madVR is a direct show filter which can be used in combination with any playback software (not only Kodi or MPC-HC - I don't use any of them). mpv is a big monolithic software and it's renderer is only a part of it. You can NOT use the renderer of mpv standalone as a replacement for madVR.

So mpv may be a replacement for any kind of software that is able to playback videos and optionally uses madVR as a renderer (or any other renderer). mpv is NOT a replacement for madVR...

mpv is not meant to be a replacement for madvr, of course because mpv is a media player. libplacebo is meant to be however.

And you can use libplacebo with MPC via avisynth.

a directshow renderer can only be used with a directshow video player that list is pretty small btw.

libplacebo is meant to be used alone as a video renderer this does not exclude directshow and there is a directshow renderer using it which only works with 1 player. (and i'm only saying this because there where same changes in lavfilter which is directshow)

if you are not aware kodi does not support madVR or directshow at all there is simply a version of kodi with directshow support on the other hand the original version and still "active" development version of kodi can be upgraded to libplacebo without throwing "everything" else away for directshow.

so yes you can use libplacebo as an alternative to madVR there is simple no one that has written an open source directshow renderer with it yet. and unlike madVR you can use it everywhere vulkan or direct x what ever version it needs and it may run without modification windows or not.

You're missing the point. Many here use madVR primarily for its excellent tonemapping (especially HDR to SDR). When madshi stops releasing updates and there is no longer any active madVR development for HTPCs the tonemapping replacement will be mpv (libplacebo is its secret sauce). I'm using it now as an external player for Kodi and it does what I want it to do incredibly well (with far fewer system resources) and it's getting better all the time.

He's not, he's just clarifying your statement wasn't technically correct.. It's no big deal.

I'm having the lastest madVR(0.92.17) build and Test Build(madVRhdrMeasure166) installed,
but I keep getting this "please update your madvr build" overlay reminder to remind me to update the madvr version,
What seems to be the problem?
Is there a newer madVR build am missing?

Same for me, there doesn't appear to be an update though.

Same for me, there doesn't appear to be an update though.Expect this to be the new normal going forward. Either wait for the new build, downgrade to the release version or use something else

there used to be one release every 2-3 months and builds were made with that in mind. Now over 5 months passed

the thing is, even if you just use the latest 0.92.17 release build without applying any hdrMeasure build,
these's still this "please update your madvr build" overlay reminder keep telling you to update,
as far as I know, there's no solution for now.
