Does Madvr prefer .ts to .m3u8, .m3u8 to .ts or does it even matter?

madVR gets decoded video from LAV Video, it does not care what container the video is in.

Is it just me or is NGU AA Chroma sharper than NGU Standard Chroma?
do you even look at an image that expose this?
If that was directed towards me:
I am genuinely sorry, but I don't understand what you mean?

Will MadVR implement the updated variant of HDR10 called HDR10+ which basically implements dynamic metadata that made Dolby Vision unique?

Is there anyway to change the settings by mistake from one instance of Madvr running on one computer in your home network, to another instance of Madvr running on another computer in your home network, without having actively enabled LAN access?
Not sure what you are asking exactly, but if you want settings from Computer A on to Computer B, simply copy settings.bin from Computer A to Computer B in the MadVR folder.
Alternatively you can export the registry key for MadVR from Computer A and import it over to Computer B.

Also no.. It's not sharper unless you can prove otherwise.

most of the high end are 8 bit and why not?
edit: for you warner my pana uses normal, full and auto, auto is working fine on my set.
I also have a Panasonic, but it must be older. I'll change that setting.
And, yes, professional reviewers shouldn't report the bit depth. They will get it wrong more than they get it right.

Is there actually content out there now? HDR10+ is being superseded by displays that can do dynamic tone mapping with HDR10 content. madshi has already said this is possible in madVR. I wonder if it will ever become relevant if displays and Blu-ray players are already using similar technology with HDR10.

No. When LAN Access is disabled, the madHcCtl process does not listen to any network traffic. Even if you accidentally enabled it, Windows firewall will block it by default unless you allow it's traffic.

Got my new LG OLED C8 tv but cannot set RGB to 10/12bit. RGB allows only 8bit with 4K resolution . Only YCbCr 4:2:2, 4:2:0 allow 8bit + , where YCbCr 4:2:2 allows 10bit (should be native) and 4:2:0 allows only 8 or 12bit (and YCbCr 4:4:4 allows only 8bit) . Which one should I use ?
Asmodian
19th June 2018, 21:40
RGB 8 bit, for sure. Also, my C7 does better with 8 bit input compared to 10 bit, less banding with 8 bit (as counterintuitive as that is), but even without the limitations of my display 8 bit RGB is much better than 10/12 bit with 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.
Edit:
This is assuming you are using a "PC" mode on your display. If you use any other mode your TV will process in 4:2:2 so you might as well send it 10 bit 4:2:2. Much better to use a PC mode with 8 bit RGB input but if you like any of the features that are disabled while in PC mode maybe another mode is worth it to you. madVR becomes less important when using subsampled chroma, still better than alternatives but you lose much of the quality difference, RGB FTW.
mclingo
19th June 2018, 22:03
the problem with using PC mode is that is disables TRUMOTION on LG OLEDs, this I find essential as with no motion blur between frames due to super fast response time compared to LED you can get jagged edges on bright areas in pan shots. A good example of this is at the beginning of elysium when the earth pans away form the space station, with TRUMOTION on with a low setting of 3, with my EF9500 I get a smooth sharp picture with no wobbly edges, option 3 isnt enough to give the nasty soap opera effect for me but this is subjective.
difference is night and day for me, I could not live without this.
I'm currently using 4:4:4 full RGB and letting my players and madvr do all the switching duties.

Latest AMD drives including 18.5.3 and 18.6.1 disables auto HDR switching in MADVR for me, guessing its something to be with being optiimised for windows 10 1803, i've had to go all the way back to 18.2.2 to find a stable fully working driver.
Anyone else on win 10 1709 using latest AMD driver 18.6.1 can HDR autoswitch on their TV?

I've logged this with AMD but also popped a bug on MADVR just in case MADSHI wants to have a look, there might be a workaround as HDR can still be toggled in windows itself using the HDR on / off toggle in display settings.

I have a perplexity, I'm using madvr recently, today I tested with mpc-be + madvr, vlc and kodi17.6 with a 1080p file of the tv series "the walking dead", I chose this tv series because it presents in the video a lot noise, a kind of small dots that swarm, here with mpc + madvr the image was not better than vlc or kodi, indeed it had more noise, video noise, this is the dithering? but madvr did not have to improve the general picture of the image?
am I wrong in my settings?
-artifact removal- reduce banding active arrtifact, all the other off.
-image enhancements in default, off!
-scaling algorithms,
--chroma upscaling-super-xbr -sharpness 100, activate anti ringing filter ACTIVE.
-image upscaling -JINC -anti-ringing filter ACTIVE.
-upscaling refinement, default, all off.
--dithering- error diffusion-option 1 !!!
--trade quality for perfomance-all disabled

For the noise you see, use 'reduce compression artifacts'. Helps to map the feature to your remote control and toggle the intensity 1-10.

Definitely not dithering. The image has compression artifacts and/or film grain and madVR is doing a faithful representation. Such is life with bad sources. As brazen said, try reduce compression artifacts. Also try using NGU image upscaling. It should do a better job of ignoring the noise, but it won't remove it. Reduce banding artifacts might even leave some noise in these scenes where it removes the banding. This is usually the case with dark scenes with debanding set to medium.
Reduce random noise might also be worth trying.

Fyi, bad compressed sources are not the only cause of noise. Many, (too many imo) titles have excessive grain. Personally, I don't like any and find myself running to RCA to process the crap out of it. I know it's subjective but I can't stand it tbh. Even at the expense of detail loss, removing grain looks better to me. If I had more processor and memory, I'd sharpen it up after removing as much noise as possible. So glad madshi created it for us!
This is why I prefer video over film. Modern video rarely has grain or noise that I notice. I wish everything was created in video. Instead of burning frames to nitrate (I mean come on, this is the standard since motion pictures was developed), capture it straight to the digital chip. Clean, fast real time, and post processing a breeze. No more waiting for film to be developed. No guess work how the scene is going to look after processing. Etc. TBH, I think the only reason film is still around is to keep cinematographers and colorists employed. Perhaps some editors. With video, I don't think we need them and their old school expertise. Sure would cut down on production costs too. If the savings were passed to consumers (yeah sure) perhaps a movie ticket and/or a disc price would become realistic. Few are willing to break the chain imo. Hollywood is in constant fear of heads rolling and no one dare rock the boat. Politics, all of it. I think those that prefer this antiquated film and voice it anytime someone has something to say contrary, is shaking in their boots.
What's that saying? No grain..... no pain?

if i'm honest i'm not 100% sure, I am sure 18.5.2 was working the other day and now it isnt, i'm only back to 18.2.2 though because later drivers have been unstable for me, random freezes mainly using RDP conections to my machine from work.
18.2.2 is very stable for me, everything works as it should as far as I can tell.

Same here, all drivers above 18.2.2 had stability issues for me, 18.5.2 was the first version to remain stable for me but I must have forgotten ti test HDR when I put it in.
However, i'm now up and running on 18.3.4, all is working except i'm having to calibrate MADVR to BT2020 to deal with blown out reds which I can live with as everything else is working perfectly.
have a go with 18.3.4 but use DDU to wipe you system first so you're starting with a clean registry.

disappointing but at least we have a fallback driver that fully works, not looking forward to being forced onto 1803 though, i've set it to delay by 365 days but i'm going to get it eventually, hopefully stuff will be working properly by then.
I've been tempted away to me spare NVIDIA 1050 but there are still plenty of issues with NVIDA drivers too so I think i'll just remain with AMD for now on 18.3.4
I'll keep trying new releases though in the hope they fix this, AMD have been in touch for some more information about the HDR switching issue, you never know, they may act on this.

I agree, what I meant was that the reason the HDR switching isnt working might be something to do with how AMD have been optimizing their drivers for the upcoming 1803, this HDR issue is only affecting the last two driver versions.

these settings are subjective, you just need to try them out for yourself and see which works best for you, there is no objective settings that anyone can recommend beyond those that are set at default install, these are set for max compatibility rather than quality.
start with NGU sharp high for Chroma and upscaling, if your card cant handle that tinker with it until it can.
There is plenty of documentation on this too for you to read.

There isn't a whole lot you can do to boost the image quality of a 1080p -> 1080p source. Choose any of the NGU or Reconstruction settings for chroma upscaling. Set dithering to Error Diffusion. Artifact removal is up to preference. If you want the image to be sharper, try image enhancements.

I thought that might happen. If you choose NGU Sharp low - very high, you can use reduce compression artifacts for free. Turn off debanding. If that doesn't work, try reduce random noise. There might not be much else you can do for a bad source.
If you are using Kodi, chances are DXVA2 image upscaling is using Bilinear upscaling, which will smooth the noise, but won't work well for good sources. It is a tradeoff no matter what you use.

Some directors like Christopher Nolan make good use of film. But grain is an artifact, so it doesn't really serve any purpose. If the source isn't captured well, post-production usually isn't enough to improve it. I feel the same way about compressed sources. Once a source is compressed by a certain threshold, it becomes a lost cause and there is little point in attempting to enhance it.

grain on modern movies is intentionally added it's not an artifact.
even a mobilephone camera can capture images with less grain than todays films this should tell you everything you need to know.

i'm down with grain where it works but its the really bobbly stuff which can be very distracting to watch, you see this mainly in stuff like The walking dead, I rarely see it movies unless its a low light shot and that cant be helped really.
Rule of thumb to me is, if I notice it, either there is too much grain or the film isnt interesting enough, I dont go looking for it though and I rarely notice it :)

Yes, but the grain is meant to create the look of old movies, which had this artifact. And adding grain to correct artifacts is another story. It is more of a post-production tool than a necessary part of the image.
I'm guess I'm saying, what is grain? What does it represent? Is it meant to represent a dreamlike state or an imaginary world? What place does it have in the real world?

War of the Worlds (2005) is a perfect example of grain abuse. There are many others. Too many imo. Yes, the grain is intended by the director to 'enhance' the ambience of the movie. I just don't view it as an enhancement that benefits my experience more than without it. Just the opposite. It ruins it. Fortunately, we have been given a tool, RCA, to correct what I consider, a blunder. We've been given another one, add grain, for those that find it enhancing though I can't understand anyone in their right mind using it.
4k remasters of old titles are famous for pronounced grain/artifacts. Viewed originally 480p-1080p, much of it was hidden. Now remastered in 4k, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Why it isn't processed out, I don't know but thankfully our RCA tool will do it.
I still prefer digitally capturing frames in video vs burning it on nitrate film. Everything about it is superior imo. I've seen video commercials that add fake grain and artifacts to keep appealing to their old school audiences. It's kinda' funny really. And I agree, a 4k iPhone produces a cleaner image than expensive film cameras. Not to mention the upset in the industry regarding jobs and time that generates revenue opposed to video that a child can shoot and edit in real time producing a better picture than skilled hands. Still I realize Joe Public has a hard time adapting and adopting to new perspectives.
Look how many still pound fists that 2160p is not an upgrade from 1080p and use seating distances as excuses. HDR is deemed a gimmick too. Most media sold are DVD's. Many, many older people still prefer VCR's. Folks cling to what they know and what they were raised on. I was raised on all of this. I remember B/W TV with only 7 channels offered. When a show was an hour long and commercials, I mean 'sponsers' got a mention at the beginning and end of the show. The advancement of precision displays and clean video sources is a gift from heaven I'm able to utilize in my lifetime. For the sources clinging to old timey appeasement, thank you madshi for giving us spoons of sugar to sweeten this unpalatable cuisine. Thank you to display manufactures for the adjustments in your products to enhance sources to our tastes should we desire to break the mold. One day new generations will laugh at grainy film like we do at the quality of 1st gen 'talkies'. I think everyone here is looking for perfection. Consider yourself on the cutting edge.
