I do remember this been very green / teal in the cinema.
Yeah I seem to have that memory as well lol? Or is it the Mandela effect? I distinctly remember scenes from that movie that were green, but I can't quite remember if it was in the cinema or if it was in some computing class at school where someone was playing the DVD on one of the school computers and I was noticing how green it was.
How green is the matrix? The answer to this question is perhaps forever lost to the sands of time.
Did they have digital cinema in 1999 or was it still mostly projected directly through the celluloid? Because I've heard you get a completely different palette doing that. That's why movies shot on film aren't really entirely "the film look", they're a hybrid of film + the digital camera sensor inside the film scanner. So the look that I fell in love with was actually film + video combined (and then not tealised in post)

for me the 2008 bluray seems to be the correct colour but my memory is poor, I do remember this been very green / teal in the cinema.
The problem isn't what color it was.
The problem is people wrongly buying into the concept of Reference.
It's just a marketing point, film maker mode, and it appeals to the weak minded.. They want to be told that they're living correctly with a pat on the head by the wise old film maker.
Apply it to anything else, Cheese maker's cheese, you see how absurd that is. It's just a flavor, 1 of infinite possibilities.
Madvr lets us use any lut, any color temp. Madvr is a neutral bridge, FREEDOM from reference.
For example, there's 2 very different version of Transporter (2002) bluray out there, one is almost completely yellow/ sepia sky, the other is normal blue sky. Which is correct? Why does it even matter? They both look great, and have a different atmosphere. And Madvr delivers them both accurately.

Let's push this a bit further and say the re-release was black and white - would you allow complaints?

Amusingly enough, they actually have done that at times with stuff. The movie Logan is one example. They officially released a black and white version of it, "Logan Noir", which I need to check out sometime. I think that's allowable because it's artistic intent and the subjective presentation is changed a lot as it does with photography. How much, who knows? Would also be interesting to know how they went about it.. I'm sure it must have been more than just a lazy sliding of a saturation slider to 0 because I'm aware of the difference between desaturation and true greyscale (both are not identical).
I saw Matrix in the theatres on film (hard to believe it wasn't yesterday), and it wasn't green at all, so for me, the '99 DVD would be closest to what it originally looked like, and honestly, I think the original presentation makes more sense because this is the world they live in.. it's supposed to look normal.. it's not supposed to be tinted from the perspective of the characters and it doesn't really make much sense either.. why would a G-class star like ours be tinted like that? Our video games are not tinted unless we want some kind of artistic effect. So really, the tinting that came later is from our perspective to make it look cooler and jazzier, not the perspective of the characters which changes the immersion depth.

I think that's allowable
I'm all for allowing anything, the more the merrier. My only request is to not delete the original. As long as I have access to the original, I'm happy and have no interest in telling others what version they should or shouldn't be watching, contrary to tp4tissue's claim that I might be some moral busybody who wants a pat on the head for "living correctly", this couldn't be further from the truth at all. It's actually the act of deleting the original (or making it unavailable) which is an assertion of its "incorrectness".
I read the creators say they did actually put a deliberate green tint in the original 35mm and were even lighting some scenes with green tinted lamps to get the effect of one of those green monochrome CRT displays to signify when they are in the matrix. If you look at the WB logo that plays at the beginning of the movie on the DVD release (both 1999 and 2004) it has an almost pixel shader effect on the logo with intentionally downscaled resolution (aliasing on the letter W) flickering and soft glowing edges.
I have been watching the 1999 PAL DVD remux this evening and yes it does have a greenish-yellowish tint on scenes that take place in the Matrix, but it isn't anywhere near as strong or pure saturated green as the subsequent DVD and 2kBD. Also checked out the KK650 remaster of the 2kBD and it's okay, a step in the right direction, but it just looks like they removed green from the white balance cause the whites are shifted magenta as well. Still kind of prefer the 1999 DVD.

I was stunned when I saw the teal tinting and "vibrant" faces of the 2018 Blu-ray; it is clearly off, changing the atmosphere of the film and giving the affected sequences, such as the rooftop scenes, an almost circus-like appearance. I read that the 4K is superior but still along the same lines.
Sometimes, a regrading changes what viewers are familiar with but actually goes back to the original intent. Recently, I made some encodes of Lost Highway. Criterion's remastering was derived from a scan of the original negative and overseen by Lynch and Peter Deming, the director of photography. On first glance, it looks duller and more shifted towards brown than the older Blu-ray's vibrancy and colour: how many people know the film. But further digging reveals that, during shooting, Deming had used "chocolate" filters on the camera, among other things; and Criterion's Blu-ray seems to bring that out: the film has a muted, noir appearance, as if it were stuck in time, contrary to the "colourful" versions people know.

Green is a natural colour of trees and grass that makes me feel calm, but darker shades can look like rotten algae or something sickly.
I absolutely love very dark green on foliage, might just be my favorite color I regularly see in nature. Only yellowish green can give me any kind of negative associations. Just goes to show how subjective all this is.

Yeah I guess it depends on the context. If it's a person's face tinted dark green under subdued lighting like in the greenified versions of the matrix then obviously that's going to elicit a different response than say dark green foliage, which to me looks quite nice as well eg. the dark green foliage in the first Rambo film.

Wow, they destroyed the original colours in the 2023 remaster.. the resolution is better, but the colours are different. It's the Netflixation of everything where everything has to be tinted or dark.
Here is a similar frame as the 3175191.jpg image that I found, colours are definitely different. The yellow excavator in the background looks a bit desaturated in the new one, and in this older one, the yellow has more punch. https://i0.wp.com/bamfstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/RamboFB-CL-Jacket1.jpg

And tinted the same colours like cyan/teal/blue. If there's a wall in the background, that wall will now be painted TEAL. It's total obsession. They're all doing it! We have this huge colour palette of millions of colours to choose from and they just compress it all down to this DUOTONE scheme. It's like they are following some ideology that movies should all look the same. What's another word for that — equity? Equal outcomes for all movies?

Back in the days many bug reports appeared W11-related, even madshi advised against it as D3D layer was buggy according to him.
So apparently PS scripts not working in PotP would be D3D-related, stock D3D DLL's from last MPC-HC release folder work perfectly fine with MPC-HC but using same DLL's gives no dice with PotP.
Oddly enough, PotP's coder has shown me screenshots where PS scripts work for him in mVR on W11 23H2 ><
Is there another player these days that supports PS scripts in mVR, seamless playback of multiples files and automatic profiles based on resolution/fps? PotP has been the top of the crop for a while but maybe competition finally arose? KMPlayer appears quite dead and PS scripts don't work either, not too surprising as PotP is based on KMP IIRC.

Using d3d9 dll from MPC-HC is pointless because Madvr uses an older version of the SDK and needs a different dll.
Solution is simple: install the DirectX9 redist
(and to all dumb idiots: no you don't already have "latest" DirectX, the redist installs stuff that is not included with Windows)

I had to remove PotP the other day as it literally destroyed my PC when I tried to play a 3D MVC movie, it would just crash my GPU drivers and leave them in a state where I couldnt change resolution, couldnt reinstall the AMD driver, even if I ran DDU, I had to do a system restore, no idea what was going on there but it was set to D3D11, could that be what caused it? - it played 2D movies ok

OK thanks a lot for the tip, I had no idea latest W11 would need a 15yo DX9 redist
PotP coder said:
I confirmed the reason.
This is a bug in madVR.
madVR requires a special version of dll(D3DCompiler_43.dll).
Simply find the file appropriate for the 32/64-bit version and place it in the PotPlayer folder.
But he runs the exact same versions as mine of d3dcompiler_47.dll & d3dx9_43.dll on W11 in PotP's folder and it works for him ><
PS: OK done, must uncab x86 "D3DCompiler_43.dll" manually from that DX9 redist file (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109) to PotP's folder, gotta love running outdated software :o
I can now run automatic profiles based on resolution/fps to run this gamut conversion script (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/color-correction-with-a-htpc-simpler-solution-and-now-it-really-works.912720/) & also do mirroring/flipping in one click, Reclock works as well :)
Next run will be VST plugins in ffdshow, was a nasty kludge at the time via FFX4, I'm a believer ^^

Does it make any difference other than on compression efficiency whether CABAC is used (my video camera doesn't) and what the number of reference frames and slices per frame is, that is, on actual quality?
huhn
25th October 2024, 19:06
totally wrong thread.
quality is determent by encoding efficiency for lossless codes.
slices lower image quality ever so slightly.
ref frames increase encoding efficiency from barely anything to massive gains.
cabac gives massive gains.
so except for crf encodes which a camera will nearly for sure not use yes this has massive effect on quality for CRF it has massive effects on file size.
this is the forum for such question with user far far more knowledge about this topic then me.

Hi all, I just wanted to report that MadVR is working correctly again after a Windows 11 Pro update on the Canary channel. Before the update, it would not activate any of the NGU options, even though they had been set. Ctl-J showed that they would drop down to super-xbr 100. So I set MadVR to use super-xbr 100 until I could find a solution - and I could not. I posted the issue here, but nothing worked. The update to Windows failed, and that is when MadVR started having this strange behavior. I did try DDU and install fresh video drivers. But that didn't fix it. Windows kept failing to update, until I discovered that you need to turn CMS to disabled in the MSI BIOS. After that, it updated. And after the update, MadVR is now working correctly. What a pain.

Currently I'm really stunned by 2160p movies with Reclock and 4x SuperRes Reconstruction chroma, so crazy sharp and smooth on my calibrated 55" curved Sammy :)
FWIU madshi prefers to sell standalone pricey scalers instead of wasting further time on free mVR, this makes perfect sense but these don't hunt on same territories.
OTOH I guess selling 10x 7K€ scalers is less time-consuming than 3500x $20 mVR so we sure can consider ourselves lucky, never understood why mVR never went at the very least donationware.

For a clean 4k video camera source I really doubt you could tell the difference between chroma algos in a double blind test. If you can, I'd say the TV itself might have broken chroma handling so when you do it in Madvr you're perhaps avoiding the TV's chroma processing and seeing the difference. To confirm this, pause on a scene and in madvr switch between super res and something typical like bicubic. You can make hotkeys to switch profiles so you can A-B compare them at a keypress. And keep in mind I did say a camera source which is a totally different animal to sharp CGI with 1px thin lines.

native SDR 2160p footage requires no luma processing so that's wasted GPU resources in my book when these can pushed towards TOTL chroma upscaling, so why not :)
previously my old rig couldn't swing 2160p so I was using the built-in TV media player, no Reclock, no DTS, luma is decently sharp but not smooth one bit compared to 1ms HPET-powered Reclock.
HDR is an after-though on my old TV so I haven't bothered with it and can't be hassled going OLED due to burn-in issues, but apparently Sammy OLED is highly burn-in resilient(according to rtings) so I might upgrade at some point.

Can't speak to 4K, but thing is, I think some of the chroma algos oversaturate colours, especially reds.. some people like this but I feel it makes things look too garish.
It is possible that my choice (mitchell-netravali) might be because I am trying to compensate in the other direction for videos that have already had the colours boosted.

It's difficult to know exactly how red is red, especially in SDR, because the author doesn't have access to the red that he'd want.
All reds look terrible if we're using madvr's 3dlut to clamp to rec709 primaries.
Then there's QD oled red, It's almost as red as tri-laser, not quite, but almost. I agree SOMETIMES, though rarely, this is indeed Too-Red.

Reds in SMPTE-C were dark orange at best, personally I'm colorblind and lack red cones so I'm all for strong reds ^^
Movies are color-calibrated by mastering experts with eagle eyes on super pricey broadcast monitors such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8NRR5V9NCU that are recalibrated at the very least on a weekly basis
ENVY co-founder seems to be the one in charge of sales, surely it must provide madshi with more income than free mVR.
I think madshi never accepted a penny for it in order to avoid mass-scale customer support, people who spent pocket change and expect too much work for their money.
Fact is that HDTV channels provide horrid SD to 1080i upscales in my area, even their deinterlacing combs like there's no tomorrow, bad AR, bilinear upscale, they surely could use an ENVY unit huh

Are you actually missing Red Cones? Or are you the typical Red/Green colorblind which is just the red and green cones having similar sensitivity curves. Therefore you see mostly a brownish redgreen blend, unless red is very saturated.

There must be some home theater market for it in the US which is a huge place with lots of strange and interesting characters spending absurd amounts of money on unusual things. If they are priced highly enough then they only need a small number of buyers to remain profitable.
But you make a good suggestion - after he's done with envy he could switch back to working on madvr with the next version being sold for a fee. If it has all the bugs fixed and everything streamlined with some new features added, us lot would probably pay up to maybe... $50? $100?

The only reason not to do it is if you can't see a difference in a double blind test. On the other hand if you CAN spot the diff, then yes absolutely do use it if it looks better.
If you can be bothered, take some screenshots with super-res vs the bog standard ones like Cubic/Lanczos/Spline then I can A-B them and see what you're talking about.
I'm not a total prude, I do like tinkering a bit with filters even if the difference is subtle. I do think there is a point where the difference in A-B comparison is small, but when you're actually watching the content you can kind of "feel" the difference more over time. I can feel the difference between gamma 2.4 and 2.35 and reckon I could *just* spot it in a double blind test.

Exactly, selling pricey scalers means far less customer support thanks to fully controlled environment and captive customers with buying power to buy any update/newer build overnight.
Much easier business, especially if you can sell direct and avoid resellers instead of huge volume of mVR users constantly whining about third-party software messing things up and requiring too much work to fix.

It's a nice idea but most people aren't enthusiasts. They leave the colour temperature at 9300K and have soap opera effect on. In a previous generation, this same type of person was unable to set the clock on a VCR.
Also, mainland Chinese aren't going to pay a cent for anything. If they think there is a market, they will simply clone the software. You can't patent open algorithms. All MadVR is, is a nice assemblage but it can be duplicated. Maybe not every single thing since a lot of work has gone into it, but for a mass market TV, "good enough". Since the back end of most of those is Android now, they will simply just slap a custom GUI on mpv with some presets and call it a day.
Would the freemium model have worked? I don't think so.. Good enough extends to mpv and VLC. So they made the right decision in making a hardware box because now they can deliver something to someone who likes shiny gadgets that doesn't require a deep understanding of how things work.
Your freemium model is probably the renderer nevcariel is working on. No idea on its feature set or how far along to completion it is.
PS. An attempt was made to purchase VLC for a significant sum of money. The amount was tens of millions of euros. The offer was declined.

LOL I love when people oversimplify stuff. Yes, it's an ATX case. Yes, it uses some PC parts. No you can't replicate it yourself for a few reasons. One is that the HDMI input card is NOT "off the shelf". Also, madvr licensing precludes you from using the software in that manner. But the input card is fully HDCP compliant and it cost them money to get it built and licensed for the Envy.

The Chinese are not paying for Madshi to write code, though of course he should write some.
The Chinese would be paying Madshi for his legion of dedicated fans. It's up to Madshi to figure out how to package us, and sell the Chinese on why we're valuable. At this point, he and his team must believe, that millions of us madvr fans are worthless. Clearly not a single person on that team has a business degree.
Even millions of morons are worth Quite a lot, you can even win the presidential election. Millions of morons put e-girls with no education in mansions.
All Madshi has to do, is ensure that the Madshi Certified TV, adheres to the Spirit of Madvr, and performs all the enthusiast features correctly, in that regard, he does have to be Judicious.
Then, going forward, software license on desktop, maybe custom dynamic 3DLuts, an AI engine to regrade 1 movie, like another movie. Double Indemnity looks like Cyberpunk edgerunner.
VLC deal was turned down probably because it would be impossible to figure out who wrote what piece of code to split the pot.
That's not the case with Madvr.

TV manufacturers should let us write shaders/effects for the TV's processor. LG could give us a user friendly API to the Alpha9 processor and a compiling tool for PCs.

But the input card is fully HDCP compliant and it cost them money to get it built and licensed for the Envy.
everything is totally normal Pc hardware including the capture card the difference is firmware/software and as you said this cost a lot.
and marketing is BS anyway. find me a none ECC DRR5 stick good luck.
"The Extreme MK2 also boasts the Glacier X2 cooling system, premium components like ECC RAM"
every DDR5 dim has ECC there is no word about registered ECC which also cost the same.
and copying it is relative easy you just need additional code in mpv maybe just libplacebo. no one did that yet because no one cares the market is tiny. it will still "work" if you want to waste your time.
HDCP never existed as a problem anyway.

millions of madvr users
As if lol, just a bunch of nerds OCD'ed about PQ, at the very most several 10 thousands that's it.
99.9999999999999% of the population listens to brainless autotuned TR808 songs, have no clue whatsoever about all that nerdy stuff and have more important things to attend, especially in those uncertain days
mVR is not viable, I guess we all worked as betatesters for ENVY, which is where the green is. We get our VR, madshi gets grand scale testing, everybody wins but accepting payment for it would mean customer support and that's a deal breaker.
Anyway mVR works so be it, I'm super happy with my rig but I could never do without Reclock.

As for recreating one, I'm personally all set. My LG G2 tone maps well enough that I'm not using any software solutions at this point. I was using jrvr until my htpc blew up. I've not bothered rebuilding it at this point. Instead I've been using a fairly cheap streaming box that handles Dolby vision. For HDR titles I use the same box and let the G2 deal with it. I no longer chase perfection.

Why do you need reclock? Are you using a PC monitor or a TV? TVs support CTA timings like 23.976/50.0/59.94 and don't need reclock, so I'm guessing you are using a PC monitor or perhaps a TV in its PC monitor 4:4:4 mode which is usually some stupid fixed rate mode like 60.1hz or something like that.

Why do you need reclock?
Millions things :
25p@24p for PAL 1080i HDTV broadcast/DVD/what-not
60p@30p for slomo, sometimes in combination with 60p deinterlacing from LAV Video + smooth-motion in mVR(but I don't like its bluriness)
23.976@24p for real cinema experience
not a single dropped frame EVAR, just mega smoothness in 24.000Hz
25p@30p to fight back slomo and get as much fps as my 60Hz TV can provide
10X framerate slowdown in combination with PotP's fully controllable zoom + A>B repeat
WASAPI exclusive audio w/ TOTL bit-depth conversion
mVR & Reclock go hand in hand, would never do w/o either and they both work just fine on W11 23H3 :)
ENVY seems to come with features mVR doesn't provide but no Reclock no deal.

reclock and untouched audio are literally mutually exclusive.
and it has been copied by quite a lot of other software.
it is just resampling or sending a wrong sample rate at the driver so it is resampling it.
envy doesn't do audio at all...

Fair enough. I use avisynth for that though, more flexible, huge video processing engine at your fingertips. Bit of a steep learning curve for the average punter tho
60p@30p for slomo...25p@30p to fight back slomo and get as much fps as my 60Hz TV can provide...10X framerate slowdown
Not sure what you mean here...what's the use case scenario? Are you doing slowmo replays with sport or something?
23.976@24p for real cinema experience
Aren't the cameras shooting at 23.976? Could you tell the diff between 23.976 and 24.0 in a blind test? The audio needs to be slightly timestretched as well...might be introducing some slight distortions.

I've never needed to use reclock because my monitor (I don't have a TV) seems to do all the refresh rates fine.
This is only an assumption that it is fine.. I am trusting that the various HUDs that report 23.976, etc. are accurate.. but how do I really know that's what is actually being displayed? I don't. I don't have specialized equipment. For all I know, it's at 24 in the panel.
The monitor's HUD is old, and won't show a refresh rate # at some resolutions.
Kind of bummed out that it's started more and more to do green flickering lines when waking up from a cold sleep (goes away when warm) and occasionally a black screen flicker.. I think its days are numbered now.. I did get years out of it though. I might be able to fix it myself if it's a capacitor and not an IC but it's a big hassle. We'll see how it goes over time.

I'm not against reclock, but the frame repeats every 41 seconds issue seems overblown. I doubt anyone claiming to see a dropped frame actually noticed it drop, they probably have system stutters dpc latency issues which have nothing to do with 1 dropped frame.

who wouldn't notice a 41 ms frame time skip...
