2) I have mixed feelings about the "Sharpness" option in Haali Renderer. I like the look it provides when upscaling from a regular dvd resolution or files around that resolution to 1920 x 1080. However, afaik the sharpening can increase noise or create other problems can it not? Anyways please share your thoughts on this.

In madVR, there are options for bicubic 50-75/80 as well (aka sharpness, A=-0.50 to A=-0.80).

Hi,

I have the fullscreen refresh-rate autochange enabled at MPC-HC, so when I play a 23.976fps file, the refresh rate changes from 60Hz to 24Hz when I go fullscreen. Everything ok for now.
After being fullscreen and at 24Hz, if i rightclick my mouse to open the menu of MPC-HC then madVR goes to Windowed mode and the refresh rate goes back to 60Hz and never returns to 24Hz, not even if I un-fullscreen and fullscreen it again. It changes to exclusive mode if I leave my mouse alone, but the 24Hz is lost until I restart the player.

This doesn't happen with EVR Custom, for example.
Any ideas?

Bat

First, did you try alt+enter? That should "force" autochange to trigger.

For EVR/CP/Sync, you can't open the context menu in the first place right?

Also notice that going fullscreen with D3D fullscreen mode does not really count as "going" fullscreen as far as autochange concern. I submited a ticket about this to MPC-HC tracker.

madshi said that eventually madVR will handle refresh rate itself, so we'll be waiting for that I think.

What graphics mode are you using (resolution, refresh rate, interlaced/progressive)? Are you using PowerStrip?

1920x1080 60Hz progressive.
Just drivers, no tweakers.

What are the differences among all the resizing algorithms in madVR? It has always been hard for me to figure out what will work best for my GPU/CPU and memory combination in terms of sharpness and speed/load of rendering. I have a C2D @ 2.66GHz, Win 7 x64, ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4570, 4GB RAM.

dansrfe, what is the resolution of your screen, also how much GPU RAM?

What resizing algorithms work on your setup? What is your video source? (if relatively noisy or blocky source then use a softer resizer; if you have a blocky video, do not use lanczos)

1920 x 1080. 1GB GPU RAM. So far the default resizer of SoftCubic80 stutters on my setup a bit when in fullscreen mode. My video source are very clean DVD sources that I have ripped to mkv files. Usually I stay around 864 x 360 or somewhere around there based on the A/R of the DVD.

default resizer?
stutter could be caused by a lot of things, not usually based on which resizing algorithm is selected.

The one selected by default when madVR is first installed. As for the causes of stutter, I really don't know. Haali Renderer or EVR-CP doesn't cause any stuttering for me though. I really want to get madVR to work as best as possible because all other renderers just have one shortcoming or another.

but isn't default lanczos4, and softcubic100?

Any possibility to get this render working on this GPU?

It would be great to ease the cpu (netbook) of some load.

AFAIK, madVR does work on on that GPU. Just set all scalers to Bilinear. It works on the Intel X3100 as well.

I set up madVR to render the video from MPC-HC and the video is very choppy. MPC reports between 18 and 20 fps. My CPU is right around 60% while playing and physical memory is under 50% utilized. If I change renderers to EVR custom Pres, then the video plays very smoothly.
I am running on an ATI 4550. I did try changing the resizers and it made no difference. The GPU never registered any usage above 0% while running with madVR, while it would read around 30% when using DXVA with EVR.
Usage staying at 0% is a bit weird. Can you try turning off PowerPlay and/or lock the GPU clocks at a higher than idle clock? You can also try playing with the different flush settings to see whether that makes any difference.

I had this same problem. I had my text at 125% on a windows 7 64bit system with a Radeon 5750 running catalyst 10.7. I changed the text to normal and then the seek bar made an appearance. I changed the text back 125% and the seek bar was still working as normal making me wonder if it was something specific to my system.
Weird. Did this problem come back or is it completely gone now?

For some reason the seek bar is not showing up in either of the modes. I have an ati 5870 and using MPC-HC.
You did move the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen, didn't you? Does the "exclusive" OSD message show up when madVR switches to exlusive mode?

Rendering performance for my HD4890 1GB on the 720 H264 file is about 55% resizing up to 1680x1050. So it would make sense that the HD5750 512MB resizing to 1920x1080 is having a much harder time.
I thought performance was better than this though, I have been mostly playing back SD content so perhaps I underestimated just how hard the GPU has to work in order to achieve an upscale to 1920x1080 from 1280x720 using Lanczos4 and Softcubic100.
Is it 24fps or 60fps? The frame rate is quite important. Obviously 60fps is 2.5x more stressful than 24fps.

*Update* Changed the screen resolution to 1280x720 and resizers to bilinear, GPU is till at 90%, weird considering the screen resolution is now the same as source file.
That is really weird. A 5750 should be nowhere near such a high value, especially not with bilinear filtering!

Does exclusive mode change anything?

Have you tried playing with the "windowed mode tweak" options?

There's nothing I can do about that right now. The problem will disappear in a future madVR version when you let madVR handle the refresh rates.

1) An option to downsize to half resolution on initial file open when resolution of source file is > resolution of screen.
You mean the same way Haali does it? I don't really like this option, *at all*. I always hated it when using Haali's video renderer. What you are looking for could also be done by the media player and not by the video renderer. I think the media player is the more appropriate place to do such a thing. E.g. ZoomPlayer has an option like that, I think.

1920x1080 60Hz progressive.
Just drivers, no tweakers.
That's weird then. Can you please create a log for me with v0.27?

1920 x 1080. 1GB GPU RAM. So far the default resizer of SoftCubic80 stutters on my setup a bit when in fullscreen mode. My video source are very clean DVD sources that I have ripped to mkv files. Usually I stay around 864 x 360 or somewhere around there based on the A/R of the DVD.
Does the stutter go away if you switch to bilinear filtering? Of course that's not optimal, but just as a test. You can also try playing with the flush settings, maybe they help?

Well, i tried to, but i got blackscreen with:
"madvr reports:
- Creating direct3d device failed"
Please try disabling the fullscreen exclusive mode in the madVR settings dialog. Does that help? Also try setting the number of backbuffers to 1. Does that help?

I'm having trouble getting this to play back smoothly with MadVR for some reason. It's smoother with CUDA off in CoreAVC but not 100%. Other sources I can now playback with MadVR fine. CUDA or no CUDA. Odd.

madVR v0.27 released

http://madshi.net/madVR.zip

* fixed: after switch to windowed mode seek bar sometimes stayed active forever
* fixed: sometimes after a Direct3D reset, rendering stopped working
* exclusive mode does now "overpower" all other processes, except task manager
* frame drop/delay logic fully rewritten
* when switch to exclusive mode fails, madVR now goes back to windowed mode
* madVR seek bar is now also shown in fullscreen windowed mode
* added forced OSD display "PC/TV levels" when using Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Y
* modified dynamic media type change handling a bit to reduce overhead
I've rewritten the frame drop/delay logic, hoping that it might fix reported problems like stuttering for several seconds when a movie starts, or after exclusive <-> windowed mode switches. There is a certain danger that the change also has negative side effects, but I sure hope not. So I'm looking forward to your feedback on whether v0.27 works better or worse for you compared to v0.26.

You did move the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen, didn't you? Does the "exclusive" OSD message show up when madVR switches to exlusive mode?

Yes, and windowed shows up too.

Thanks for 0.27 madshi.

Maybe once out of four attempts to load a movie, I get a pure blank screen and have to ctrl-alt-del and quit mpc-hc. I'll reproduce now with log file.
When it does work, mpc-hc is showing hundreds of frame drops, where as madVR shows none. Is this a madVR / mpc-hc communication problem?

I'm now getting "Exclusive Mode Failed" when I try on an interlaced res, and it falls back to windowed.

A much more graceful failure mode than before. (And no, I didn't expect it to work.)

from a quick test I'd say everything works normally like before.

regarding that manual change of TV/PC levels via ctrl + alt + shit + y, what for is this needed when using a 3dlut file? shouldnt the levels adapt to the right levels automatically according to what resolution your video is? and when doing this manual change, shouldnt the 3dlut file override with the correct levels again next time mpc is restarted? (manual settings are kept instead even though the use 3dlut box is ticked)

madshi, I'll be trying the Aero timing model for now in exclusive mode (Aero is disabled, so is the Aero timing model still working?). Normal makes video jumpy after a seek, but High and Aero seem to be better. (re: 24fps on 60Hz)

I don't know. But it is useful for me. I used to test different yCMS settings, so I have to change between different 3DLUTs. The comparison will be easier and more effective now.

I just updated to the 0.27 version. Whenever I go into full screen in MPC-HC, I get massive amounts of screen tearing--unwatchable. So, I disabled exclusive mode in the MadVR options in order to use full screen in MPC-HC
I have 2 questions that I would appreciate anyone to answer:
(1)What is the benefit of the exclusive mode?
(2)Is there something I can set in either MPC-HC or MadVR options that will enable me to avoid the problems mention earlier?
(I am on Win XP, with Nvidia 6800GT, Drivers only a few months old.;CRT Monitor, running @ 1078x768 @ 75Hz; MPC-HC build #1.3.2099.0)

It seems exclusive mode works with 10bit buffer.
New seekbar doesn't work (can you make an option to disable it, coz I like good old mpc one?).

In exclusive mode, you won't be able to have any GUI from your media player. It means no seekbar, no context menu.

So it's better if the renderer offers a seekbar than having nothing.

That error code means "D3DERR_INVALIDCALL". I'm not sure why it occurs. Can you please upload a log for me somewhere (don't attach to this forum, it takes too long for the attachment to be approved).

To create the log, rename "madVR.ax" to something else and then rename "madVR [debug].ax" to "madVR.ax". Then retry to load a video using madVR. After that, zip the "madVR - log.txt" file, which was created on your desktop and upload it somewhere. Thanks.

Yes, and windowed shows up too.
That's really weird. I'll have to think about how to find out why it's not working for you. You do have the seekbar enabled in the madVR options, don't you? :)

Maybe once out of four attempts to load a movie, I get a pure blank screen and have to ctrl-alt-del and quit mpc-hc.
I'm having a similar problem, but only when maximizing (double clicking the title bar of) MPC HC before the video starts playing. If I leave MPC HC alone until the video has started playing, I have no such freezes. Not sure yet what this is caused by. The logs I've created myself don't show what's going on.

When it does work, mpc-hc is showing hundreds of frame drops, where as madVR shows none. Is this a madVR / mpc-hc communication problem?
I don't know where MPC HC is getting its information from, but it's surely wrong. Playback is smooth, isn't it? There are some statistics interfaces madVR is not supporting yet. Maybe adding support for them will fix the MPC HC dropped frames display. But honestly, that's WAY down my priority list.

I'm now getting "Exclusive Mode Failed" when I try on an interlaced res, and it falls back to windowed.

A much more graceful failure mode than before. (And no, I didn't expect it to work.)
Can I have a log, please? One major problem I'm seeing with interlaced res on XP is that the XP Direct3D APIs don't have a flag at all to specify whether I want to activate a progressive or interlaced resolution. Which *maybe* means that having madVR go into exclusive mode with an interlaced resolution *may* never work. No such problem in Vista and win7 where there's an enhanced Direct3D API available which allows me to say whether I want interlaced or progressive. I'm not really sure yet, though, maybe it will work in XP, too, somehow...

regarding that manual change of TV/PC levels via ctrl + alt + shit + y, what for is this needed when using a 3dlut file? shouldnt the levels adapt to the right levels automatically according to what resolution your video is?
The levels switch has nothing to do with the resolution of the video. It must be set correctly for your monitor. Basically you should set it once and then forget it. However, some people (mainly yesgrey, and seemingly janos666) like to play with different 3dluts and the ctrl+alt+shift+Y key combo allows them to switch between 2 different 3dluts quickly.

madshi, I'll be trying the Aero timing model for now in exclusive mode (Aero is disabled, so is the Aero timing model still working?). Normal makes video jumpy after a seek, but High and Aero seem to be better. (re: 24fps on 60Hz)
Does "normal" make video jumpy after a seek with v0.27, too? Or is that just what you remember from v0.26? I plan to get rid of High and Aero in the next build and only offer Normal. But if you say that Aero works *much* better for you, I may have to change my mind.

I just updated to the 0.27 version. Whenever I go into full screen in MPC-HC, I get massive amounts of screen tearing--unwatchable.
There was another user recently who had a similar problem. He reinstalled everything, GPU drivers, media player, DirectShow filters etc, and that fixed the problem for him. There's no way a properly installed PC should have tearing in fullscreen exclusive mode. There must be something wrong with your software installation somehow, I think.

What is the benefit of the exclusive mode?
No tearing! And somewhat better performance. As said above, if you have tearing in exclusive mode, there must be something wrong.

And how I can create the log?
See my very first reply in this post.

Not really. Does that mean that exclusive mode now works for you with v0.27?

There already is an option to disable it.

So it's better if the renderer offers a seekbar than having nothing.
If you disable the madVR seekbar, MPC HC shows its own one - and it works. However, madVR is forced to switch between exclusive <-> windowed modes twice for every seek, if you do that.

madshi, can you please explain to me what is the purpose of fullscreen exclusive mode vs just windowed fullscreen? This is the first time I've actually seen it and when I fullscreen the video, it almost looks like the renderer has changed to Overlay Mixer until I left click and load the mpc menu, which then results in madVR coming back in windowed fullscreen mode.

Edit: I notice EXTREMELY smooth and nice motion in fullscreen exclusive mode. Maybe it's just madVR magic that I've not noticed beofre and exists in windowed mode as well. Just an observation. I just wish the mpc bar existed in fullscreen exclusive mode. Also the same issue as above with the renderering looking very washed out in fullscreen exclusive...almost like an overlay mixer look. Windowed fullscreen seems to be the best option for now I guess.

Also can you add more button navigation in addition to the scroll bar? Just like in mpc if possible. If nothing else then the chapter buttons would be great. Can you please explain a bit more in-depth on how it works though :o. I'm really interested in that aspect as well. It almost looks like it is syncing perfectly to the display.
In exclusive mode madVR has full control over the GPU and does not need to share control with the OS or other applications. The main benefit is that frames are switched by a GPU hardware interrupt exactly during VSync hardware events. That guarantees that there's no tearing. In windowed mode, madVR has to share control with the OS and other applications. Frame switching is done by actually copying the the new frame over the old one pixel by pixel. That is still done by the GPU hardware, but it's more time consuming and there's no guarantee that there's no tearing.

Also can you add more button navigation in addition to the scroll bar? Just like in mpc if possible. If nothing else then the chapter buttons would be great.
Not planned right now, maybe later. You can pause/run by clicking on the video frame, or by pressing Space. So no need for such a button.

And as for the rendering having very high gamma levels as in Overlay Mixer what can be done to fix that?
You're saying that gamma is different in exclusive mode compared to windowed mode? Don't know why that is the case. Have you changed the contrast/brightness or other controls in the GPU settings?

I did a little, nothing helped. Are there some good combinations to try?
The default options work well for some people. Other people seem to have better results with all flush options turned off. Other people seem to have better results with all flush options set to "flush & wait (loop)". You can also check if changing the "upload frames in render thread" option makes a difference. I'd suggest to set the timing model to "normal", if it's not there already.

Then there's still hope that the final exclusive rendering path (which I've yet to write) will further improve things.

dansrfe
17th August 2010, 08:56
Ah yes, that reminds me that I have done adjustments in the GPU settings since I'm on a laptop screen and also because the default gamma on the ATi card is really high for some reason and clearly out of proportions. Is there anything you can suggest since the GPU settings are clearly ignored in fullscreen exclusive mode I guess. All I have done is a simple gamma adjustment to 0.70 (yes that is what looks normal on my screen lol) and contrast at 104.

My last feature request is for subtitle rendering to somehow be able to take place while in fullscreen exclusive mode. I personally like using MPC-HC's internal subtitle renderer since it provides more control and is easier for me to tweak exactly how the subtitles look on output with regards to location, resolution, font, and size.

Thanks.

madshi,
I tried the new version and I like the new "overpower" FSE mode but I have two little remarks/feature requests:
1. can you also add ProcessExplorer as an alternative to Task Manager. I and I think many "power users" use it instead of Task Manager and it will be nice to still have an option to use it if the player hangs.
2. while testing this task manager behavior I noticed that when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del (on Windows 7 it shows a fullscreen window with 5 options (Lock/Switch user/Log off/Change pass/Task manager)) while the video is playing in windowed mode the playback pauses ... without the player (ZoomPlayer) knowing it and I have to press "pause/play" twice to continue. This doesn't happen with EVR which continues playback even while the five options window is visible. I also noticed that if I'm in fullscreen exclusive mode when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del madVR shows the following error
madVR reports:
- resetting Direct3D device failed (88760868)
- creating Direct3D device failed (8876086c)
which I think is normal but I thought I should let you know since you wrote that if FSE fails the player will fallback to windowed and in windowed I get only paused playback not errors.

You can add no stuttering when using mismatch framerate in dual monitors setup with aero as another benefit. Aero generally (somehow) fixed tearing, but give global stuttering (not limited to video) when using dual monitors with mismatch framerate. Exclusive mode fixed that.

DirectVobSub 2.40 is the culprit, without it GPU load on my 4890 is insignificant but with it enabled it's at 53%

Maybe yesgrey (when he reads this) can hook you up with a simple 3dlut file to do the gamma adjustment you need? Not sure if your GPU is fast enough to use 3dluts, though.

Good to hear!

1. can you also add ProcessExplorer as an alternative to Task Manager.
Sure.

2. while testing this task manager behavior I noticed that when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del
That's caused by madVR not using the Vista+ specific Direct3D9 extension right now. It will be fixed later...

can you explain what does the option 'Upload frames in render thread' do?
It's just a different way of rendering, resulting in exactly the same image quality, but performance might be slightly better or worse. Just try which settings works better for you. If you don't see a difference, stick with the default setting.

Found the problem to my frame drops.
DirectVobSub 2.40 is the culprit, without it GPU load on my 4890 is insignificant but with it enabled it's at 53%

It is interesting that this doesn't occur with 0.12. Can you try different DirectVobSub versions? Also please check the pin connection types to see if there are differences between 0.12 and 0.27. Of course if you could help me reproduce this problem on my PC, I might be able to fix it.

I think I remember you earlier wrote that you saw a surprisingly big resolution listed somewhere, bigger than the movie resolution. Is it possible that you setup DirectVobSub in such a way that it scales up the images somehow, to improve subtitle quality? 0.12 did not allow other filters to change the resolution during playback. That might explain why 0.12 was not affected...

Do you see differences in the madVR OSD when comparing 0.12 vs. 0.27? I'm talking image resolution, mainly.

From what graphics card I can use the most powerful resizer without running out of power ? (HD 4650 ?)
The faster the card is for gaming, the faster it is also for madVR. Which card you need for the most powerful resizer also depends on which resolution and framerate your videos have (e.g. convert Blu-Rays deinterlaced to 1080p60 require a *LOT* more processing power than upscaling DVD movies (480p24)). Furthermore, the currently most powerful resizer will probably be topped by even more demanding algorithms in the future. So as I've always said: If you plan to use madVR, get the fastest GPU that you can afford and that fits the thermal requirements of your HTPC.

As requested, log file on an Interlaced res. I'm using W7 x64.

That's interesting, Direct3D reports to me that you're using 1080p with 29Hz interlaced. Is that correct??

No. Well...kinda..

29hz Interlaced is the base resolution I pick in Windows (or ATi CCC), before tweaking it with Powerstrip to 47.952hz.

Most programs and displays, report these refresh rates as 59.994hz, or 95.904hz. For instance, madVR and Reclock both consider my refresh rate to be 95.904hz, as does my monitor and projector.

Windows and Powerstrip use the "half" refresh rate to describe an interlaced res.

Umm...does that clear it up?

I'm just wondering why madVR can't switch to exclusive mode because if Windows is seeing your desktop resolution as 1080i29, then madVR should be able to switch to the very same, too. Maybe PowerStrip interferes? Can madVR switch to exclusive mode if you turn PowerStrip off?

Yes, it is otherwise working quite wonderfully on my 5870 even with 3dluts. I use spline36 for luminance and softcubic100 for chroma (other options were a bit too sharp for my fullhd 23" monitor, softcubic tends to hide flaws somewhat)

Yes, it's very useful for yCMS development, because I need to quickly compare different 3dluts, and with images at very low levels it's very important to perform the switch without the dialog, because its brightness interferes with the comparison.
Once again, thanks for it madshi!:)

All I have done is a simple gamma adjustment to 0.70 (yes that is what looks normal on my screen lol) and contrast at 104.

With Windows set to 1920x1080 progressive at 60hz, then tweaked to 72hz progressive using Powerstrip, exclusive works fine.

It is the interlaced res that does it.

The stock Windows 1080i (29hz = what most would refer to as "1080i 60hz"), no Powerstrip, doesn't work either.

After uninstalling MPC, madVR, ffdshow and reinstalling them all, I can get it to work with a reasonable load on my GPU. I also had to use GPU-Z to monitor usage because the Catalyst menu is flakey at reporting usage. So far I'm liking what I see. I run 1080p blu-ray rips in exclusive mode and I see about 50% utilization on my 4550 GPU. I had to turn down the options for scaling as windowed mode is a bit taxing on my video card.
