Is there any way madvr can render the original .sup, either from within a .mkv or as external file?
Use it with mpc-hc sub renderer. The original .sup in mkv files play fine.

[putting messages into the black bars]
I know there are more important things. Just putting it out there, so that they hopefully make it to your todo list =)
[seekbar delays]
You've mentioned that you will add an option to shorten the queue, which will fix the delay problems. When you do, would it be possible to set the length as a time instead of a number of frames? Higher framerate videos will get a longer queue, and the delays will be about the same for 60fps and 24fps.

When the subtitles are not synchronized, what happens if you just continue playback for 2-3 minutes? Do they automatically get back into sync? Or will they stay out of sync forever?
Can anybody else reproduce this problem?
I'm sorry that I introduced you to the bug describing the problem of synchronization of subtitles. There is one already when you correctly the first few lines of inscriptions which are displayed for 5 seconds too early. This phenomenon occurs throughout the film. After switching to EVR Custom mode the problem disappears.

I just double-checked (MKV, DVD rip) and it seems to be working fine here, MPC-HC 2991. I seeked fwd and rev many times, synch appears to be correct and hold.

The OSD composition works fine for FILM contents at 23.976 fps refresh rate output.
But it looks like madVR makes the GPU overloaded with the Core2Duo + Ion 9300M system + Win7 x64 at the following case:
- 1920x1080p24 FILM
- Down-scaled by 0.5x (Catmull-Rom)
- Window mode
- Screen is 1400x1050 at 72Hz.
As the attached captured video, it was noticed that Composition rate kept changing among 24 / 36 / 72 Hz. I guess it is the reason why the playback is not smoothy.
How about making the composition rate locked at source content frame rate? I did this before to save a lot of CPU computation power and memory bandwidth for program-based OSD.
Of course it will have some side-effects on the very fancy Karaok effects.

The "composition rate" is controlled by Windows/Aero. I've zero influence on that. Try using fullscreen exclusive mode... ;)

@ madshi Please, download a file from the sample of the video with subtitles. I attach an additional file with the settings Media Player Home Cinema ver. 1.5.2.2990. You can use it to verify the problem. Please play the file in evr custom mode (the problem does not occur with subtitles) and you madVR (subtitles appear for 5 seconds too early).

Thanks for the sample. I can reproduce that madVR shows the subtitles too early. It's about 2 seconds on my PC, though and not 5 seconds. Furthermore with a different clip with different subtitles the problem does not occur. I don't know where the problem is coming from but the Haali Video Renderer shows exactly the same behaviour as madVR with both clips. So it seems to be a bug in MPC-HC and not in madVR. For your information: The Haali Video Renderer and madVR are using the same subtitle mechanism. EVR Custom uses a different mechanism. The solution used for EVR Custom can't be used for external renderers. I wish I could do more for you, but right now all I can say is that it seems to be a bug in MPC-HC and not in madVR.

The log doesn't really say so much. A google searach for the error code returned by DirectShow indicates that typical causes of the problem are either that your GPU RAM is too small or that some resources were not released properly before trying to switch to exclusive mode. Don't know if that helps much... ;-/

Too few GPU RAM can be excluded. I didn't change my hardware. It still is a GTX 260 with 896 MB of RAM.
(And it used to work on my system not too long ago ^^)
About releasing resources: What should I look at? No other apps were running. And a reboot didn't help either...

I still get subtitle problems in 047 but it is much much improoved compared to the issues I was seeing in 045. Once after seeking subtitles stopped working and I had to seek again to get them working again. I tried letting it play for a couple of minuted to see if they came back on their own but they did not. I have only got this problem to happen once however and I tried to reproduce with no luck yet.
I also have slight sync issues but not as much as 5 seconds pawlol83 mentions, I have seen issues of around .5 of a second. I read that you can reproduce it which is good news but its not a madvr issue. You mention a bug in MPC-HC, are you going to pass that onto them?

Well, something must have changed. Did you install a different driver version? Updated to a newer MPC-HC build and/or newer madVR version? You could start by trying older madVR and MPC-HC builds. If older builds work it would be helpful if you could find out which version exactly breaks exclusive mode for you.

Depends. It would be great if you could double check any potential problems with the Haali Video Renderer. If the same problems occur with both renderers then the bug is in MPC-HC. If madVR shows a specific problem but Haali does not then it's likely a bug in madVR. This information alone is worth a lot to me because it saves me a lot of time.
I'm not sure about what to do if the bug is in MPC-HC. I guess it depends on how critical the bug is, how easy to reproduce and how much content (in percent) it affects. Generally I don't like hunting bugs in MPC-HC at all because I don't know the MPC-HC code well. Furthermore compiling MPC-HC is extremely painful, at least on my old and ageing development PC.

Just wondering as I get exclusive mode failed if I open madVR on one monitor and then drag it to the second one and put it into full screen there.
I just tried to disable the second monitor (by disabling the device in the windows device manager), but after that Aero Glass was disabled for some reason and Windows complained that the driver doesn't support Aero Glass. Also I couldn't re-enable the second monitor, as it had disappeared from the device manager. Reboot didn't help, so I had to uninstall + re-install the video drivers. Now the second monitor is back alive. And, surprise surprise, MadVR works fine now (including "fullscreen exclusive mode"). I have no idea what was wrong before, as I re-installed the same driver version as before...

That's what I tried first. Problem was with older MadVR and with older MPC-HC as well. But it has disappeared now...
I think I got it: It was the "Custom Resolution" that was blocking the "fullscreen exclusive mode" in MadVR! Too bad, only that I way I could force 50 Hz
BTW: Anybody else experience that playback continues in MPC-HC after closing the media? (might not be a MadVR-specifc issue though).

About the issue you found in MPC-HC. Maybe you can just pass the info onto them so they can go a hunting for it. Normally with these things it would be given a higher priority if you were to pass the info to them about it compared to an average joe who probably could not correctly explain it on the bug tracker.

On XPSP3, If I force a default refresh rate >60Hz in the last page of dxdiag, then no more FSE in mVR...I have it to set it back to "default".

Very often, MPC/MPC-HC remains as a system process after I close it..it's a known bug. It's always happened, even w/ HR...nothing mVR-related on my box.

Don't know why a custom resolution should stop the exclusive mode from working. I'm using custom modes on my 9400 mainboard, too. However, my custom modes just redefine already existing resolutions. They don't create new ones. Maybe that's the difference. Anyway, this is out of my hands, as far as I can see. The problem might go away once I implement automatic refresh rate switching. Or not. I don't know.

I don't know a single MPC-HC dev who has experience with subtitles. I don't know any MPC-HC dev who I could ask to fix a bug. Maybe Casimir, but haven't seen him for ages and I don't think he's much knowledge about subtitle internals, either.

Its probably for the same reason as aero stopping to work. Adding custom resolutions is very broken if your on nvidia hardware and using the option in the nvidia control panel. It has a great tendancy of limiting other resolutions to 16bit once you add a new resolution, that kills aero right there. This is a nvidia driver issue if your on nvidia gfx card and nvidia don't seem keen to fix it.

Daum PotPlayer 1.5.27295 latest Beta version, my MPC -HC in fact is old, after update -fullscreen works but not in exclusive mode, KMPlayer is a dead player for me, no updates available since [2010/11/08] The KMPlayer 3.0.0.1439 Release. Potplayer is my main player and I think I found a walkaround.
This problems happend when something works in background OSD like : Ati Tray Tool -OSD FPS counter or in my case new TeamViewer 6, it has a fuction to switch your remote desktop view with another parter, this function adds a graphical menu button besides standard windows menu in this order : switch desktop, window minimize, windows maximize, close window. So when you close all TeamViewer6 windows, all problems are gone and madVR 0.47 works ok in all players.
This is an example, look at right up corner

With every version higher than 0.36 Win7 switches to Basic Colour Sceme when the movie gets toggled to fullcreen. Actually I am using two screens, a monitor and plasma tv. I usually select D3D Mode if I want the movie to play fullscreen on the plasma. Otherwise I deselect D3D Mode and can watch the movie windowed on the PC-Monitor. This used to work perfect. But with all versions higher than 0.36 Aero ist turned off. On top of that the D3D Funktion in MPC-HC is not available any more.
I could need some help here. Are there any other ways of using madvr I am not aware of? Or am I missing something else?

Thanks! Found it and it works perfect. By the way why ist Aero turened off by default. I never realized any problems with Aero. However I must admit every once in a while I red that it might have a negative effect. For me it never was a problem.
I used the D3D Fullscreen feature to decide wether I want to play a movie in fullscreen on my second monitor (plasma tv) or in windowed mode on my first monitor (computer monitor). D3D turned on the movie played right away fullscreen on the plasma tv. turned off it played in a window on the computer monitor. Just perfect. Right now I even do not know how to start the movie from the computer monitor playing it on the plasma tv. The second good thing about playing the movie that was was that the mpc-hc window was still available on the computer monitor, ready to do all kind of menue adjustments.
On top of all that. Using mpc-hc, the only way to really get rid of tearing is to use the D3D function. I must admit, I do not really understand what it does. But I used it with various renderers and the only way to get rid of tearing was to switch the D3D function on.
Anyway, thanks for your help so far.

Sorry but I don't see it that way. madVR 0.43 works with all software without problems, newer versions not, so I'm using this old version cause don't want to close TeamViewer6 or any other programs, I'm sure that are not the only ones but just wait for users report. I heard about similar problems with OSD, Ati Tray Tool + Steam (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1194042) , MSIAfterburner and few others. madVR is different than overlay and I'm not a technical guru but maybe there's a similar problem.

1. Sometimes, some lines did not show up.
2. When paused, the sub disappeared. Have to do quick double pause to (randomly) make it stay. I actually depends on this since a lot of time I paused the video to read the sub.
I haven't test with Haali yet. The first one is random so I don't have much hope for how to reproduce it. It happened enough to be noticeable though. Please let me know if there is any information I can give to be useful.

Just want to say thanks to Madshi for his continued development of MadVR. It is fantastic that Mpc-Hc internal subtitle renderer is supported and working really well.
The renderer has also made me assess every part of my HTPC such as chipset drivers, system memory performance and DDR timings. As a result I have been able to really optimise my system and squeeze out the last percentile of performance.

Hi Madshi, thanks for adding sub support, really appreciated!
I calibrated my LCD TV (its the only display connected to my PC) with a Spyder3, using the Spyder3 utility software. When Windows loads it automatically loads LUT data from the ICC profile onto the graphics card. I don't really know what this means or what it's doing 'behind the scenes' so wondered if it in any way degrades MadVR image quality?

Some ICC's do not use a LUT and require "color managed" applications. If you care about PQ, you may wanna give ARGYLLCMS a shot...it'll provide you w/ a much more accurate correction than the Spyder3 app ever will. You can also use Color.HCFR to spy on them afterwards.
That's ARGYLLCMS w/ a brand new i1lt(average ΔE lower than 1): http://thumbnails41.imagebam.com/12457/0970a2124563367.jpg (http://www.imagebam.com/image/0970a2124563367)
ARGYLLCMS uses 10bit CLUT's, so it definitely won't ruin mVR's job.
iSeries
21st March 2011, 23:48
The Spyder3 utility definitely loads a LUT after startup. From the log:
21/03/2011 19:56 - Load Video Card LUT for Generic PnP Monitor-1 from profile -- > C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color\Spyder3Express.icm
21/03/2011 19:56 - The calibration data from the profile was SUCCESSFULLY LOADED into the video card.
Thanks for the suggestions, however I don't really want to get in to anything more complicated than putting the device on the screen and pressing 'Start', my OCD is bad enough as it is, and I don't need any more obsessions :)

The biggest PQ improvement you could experience is by using Argyll instead of the s3 app...double-check its poor correction using Color.HCFR and you'll see. Plus, the s3 sensor is pretty much blind in low IRE's, so it takes a lot of crossed measurements to get it OK'ish....and Color.HCFR will give you the proper R/G/B xy coordinates measurements, so you can map gamuts on the go in mVR.
Anyway, yeah...the rabbit hole always goes deeper :D

On my system Aero on = no tearing regardless of settings or renderer. Aero off = tearing unless you are using FSE + MadVR or the D3D fullscreen option + EVR-CP.

thanks for madVR - the quality is amazing!
but i have one problem. mediaportal 1.2.0.0 uses as external player mpc-hc 1.5.2.2991 to play my videos. mpc-hc uses madVR 0.47 and ffdshow revision 3771. if the video starts mediaportal and mpc-hc change the frame rate mostly from 60 hz to 23,976 hz (23 hz). but the now playing video is stuttering in that case. i have to switch quickly one time between the fullscreen and windowed mode, then the stutter problem is solved. if i start the video directly with mpc-hc there is no stuttering at the beginning. there are just the known two or three heavy judder, when the refresh rate has to sync again, because of little differences between video frame rate and tv frame rate.
what should i change in the settings to prevent these problems? i'm sorry to ask you guys, but i could't find match howto's and help files/docs.
with mpc-hc's evr video renderer there is no stuttering, just the heavy judder two or three times. hardware config: nvidia 9800 gt, hdmi video pass to onkyo a/v-receiver and hdmi pass through to 24p compatible hdtv (it need a while to change the frame rate - it is a little bit older :D)

I get exclusive mode failed on the secondary monitor, too. On the primary everything is ok. I need the exclusive mode because that's the only case when the video doesn't stutter. I use MPC-HC 1.5.2993, CoreAVC and gtx460.

Thank you for your help and information.

I also get exclusive mode failed, but only when the interface is on one monitor, and the movie starts there in window mode, and on fullscreen it moves on the other monitor.
If fullscreen is on the same monitor where the movie starts everything is ok.
Win 7 64, ATI HD2400, Cat 11.4, MPC-HC 1.5.2.2993

madshi has commented on that before, the player requires to be on the monitor you want playbacke *before* the file is opened.

I thought that was only in earlier versions - because then it didn't work at all. Now it seems to work well except exclusive mode.

With the D3D funktion I was able to start the fullscreen movie (running on the second monitor) from the first one. Wile playing the movie in fullscreen on the second monitor the application (mpc-hc) stayed open on the first monitor. You could even get into the menue and do stuff, like checking which filters are used. The movie on the other hand played perfecly smooth, no stutter or tearing at all.
It is too bad that in the latest versions of mpc-hc this funktion ist blocked out.
Win7 64bit and Radeon HD 5770.

why ist Aero turened off by default. I never realized any problems with Aero. However I must admit every once in a while I red that it might have a negative effect. For me it never was a problem.
The main reason is that the switch between exclusive <-> windowed mode is noticeably quicker and nicer with Aero disabled. Of course it all depends on GPU and driver version and OS etc.
Ok, I understand.
Sorry but I don't see it that way. madVR 0.43 works with all software without problems, newer versions not, so I'm using this old version cause don't want to close TeamViewer6 or any other programs
I was just double checking to make sure I understood you correctly. Ok, which setting in TeamViewer6 do I have to activate to reproduce the problem on my PC?
After watched some video for real instead of short testing last night I notice that
1. Sometimes, some lines did not show up.
Can you describe it in a bit more detail? E.g. when it happens, is it always only one line that is missing? Or does the "missing" problem last for a while, maybe a couple of seconds or so? Also, is it in the middle of playback that this problem occurs? Or directly after a seek? Do subtitles flicker before/during/after this problem, or is the "look" stable, just something is missing? Anything else worth reporting about this problem? If you can reproduce it at least sometimes, can you double check this with Haali?
2. When paused, the sub disappeared.
Yes, I've noticed that myself. I don't know yet if I can fix it with the current render chain. I plan to modify the rendering chain in a couple of weeks, fixing problems like "subtitles draw over the madVR GUI" etc. After that this problem should definitely be fixed. Maybe I can fix it before then, not sure right now.

In the situation when the stuttering occurs: Does it continue to stutter forever (until you do something to stop it)? Is madVR in exclusive mode at that moment? Which OS are you on? Do you let madVR disable Aero in fullscreen mode? If the problem occurs in windowed mode, what does the madVR OSD say about Aero composition rate (if Aero is enabled)?
I get exclusive mode failed on the secondary monitor, too. On the primary everything is ok.
Do you move the media player to the secondary monitor before loading the video file?
