Is the rx 550 you have able to decode 4k hevc 10 bits UHDBlurays without stressing the cpu??
What chroma algo can it handle while playing a 4k movie? Bicubic only or it can go to jinc?
Maybe the RX 560 thats 20$ more will handle a bit more??
I can have a rx560 for about $125 nearby... And then when nvidia volta cards comes i might upgrade or not. Rx 560 must be better than rx550 right?
Here is my setup
3rd gen I7
8 gig ram DDR3
250 gig SSD
RX 550
LG OLED EF950 4k
MADVR:
image upscale - NGU sharp medium
chroma upscale - Lanzos
I upscale everything to 2160p on PC.
PC:
desktop 3840x2160p
10 bit 4:2:0
Everything plays fine, no real tax on CPU, I could possibly push it harder with more tweaking but I decided I like the picture quality i'm getting.
I agree the 560 is a better choice, money was super tight at the time I bought this, I could use my GTX 1050 instead but I find my RX for stable on my particular setup, others would disagree and do frequently :).
What I would say is that if you arent really into 3D then there really is no point getting an AMD card as it still requires FSE, if you are only playing 2D 4K movies go green.

Baffin what?? It doesnt say. Its the MSI RADEON RX 560 AERO ITX 4G OC model.
that the reason why this is issue is criminal in my eyes. a normal user can't see the difference on the name.
the MSI RADEON RX 560 AERO ITX is PCIe 16 with only 8 lanes.
but i don't see a msi version with buffin XT chip.
think about a 1050 ti if you want to use NGU about 2x speed for NGU.
@mclingo
i just used d3d11 FSE and 3D without any problem on windows fall update.

Baffin what?? It doesnt say. Its the MSI RADEON RX 560 AERO ITX 4G OC model.
There are two 560s out there (http://www.overclock.net/t/1643445/pcworld-amd-quietly-made-some-radeon-rx-560-graphics-cards-worse/0_20), one is the original one with 16 CUs and recently some have 14 CUs. There seems to be no difference between the two based on the box while one is 12.5% slower.
Based on the newegg page for it the MSI RADEON RX 560 AERO ITX 4G OC (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137124) has the full 16 CUs for 1024 stream processors (instead of the lower 896) but it is hard to verify.
edit: I agree with huhn, NGU doesn't run well on polaris. :(

well I found that NGU iage upscale was almost identical for me on my RX550 vs 1050, neither card could do more than NGU sharp medium without glitchy playback kon 4k and 3d MVC stuff, 2D 1080p stuff was fine, I could ramp that up to NGU high on both cards, there must be large difference in processing requirments between medium and high which neither card can meet.
@huhn - 3D works for me fine when I drop my PC into 1080p mode before starting KODI DS or MPC, ive created a script to do this. 3D always plays fine with D3D/FSE, the problem occurs when you stop the movie, one of three things will happen, it will either:
1. crash my PC (this happens far less with 17.10.2 ATI driver).
2. drop my HDMI connection completely, i have to turn my TV and reciever off to renegotiate, devcon reset doesnt always work so this is a pain.
3. It works fine.
There is a new ATI drivers coming soon, mainly has DX9 fixes but I'll see how stable that is with 3D.
As my system currently stands I have zero issues, it hasnt crashed for ages and all my movies play and stop fine with the above caveats, I can live with this for now.

do we not think full blown gaming cards are a bit of an overkilll for a HTPC, obviously if you are gaming as well then you need it but if you are running a 24/7 HTPC server on a budget the 1030/RX550 are the best options if your content is already mainly bluray and 4k quality.
huhn
5th January 2018, 12:23
because you should have 4GB vram for 4K playbacl(netflix needs 3 GB) so a card is already close to 100 bucks and the 550 is not worth it money it cost basicly the same as a 560.
idle power consumption is pretty much the same any way so no there is no reason to get a 550 ever.

I just bought that MSI card, it's not listed as a d/Pro chip in German price comparisons and mine got the XT chip accordingly (also tested 3DMark).
The 8 PCIe lanes are ugly when you don't have PCIe 3.0, with 3.0 it doesn't really matter (it was also that way with every RX 460 card).
Of course the card isn't optimal when you want best hardware decoding + nice NGU performance. I bought it as a cheap 4GB substitute for my defect GTX 1070 and because AMD is way better than Nvidia on Linux these days.

interesting, i've only got a PCI express 2.0 board, would I get any benefit from tracking down a PCI express 3.0 board mainboard for my RX550 or is the main bottleneck for MADVR the card itself, and it wouldnt really add anything to the rendering path?

does UHD 60 FPS copyback work without major performance issues?
aufkrawall
5th January 2018, 18:31
No, performance hit is obnoxious. But this is not related to 8x PCIe 3.0 bandwidth limitation, but to AMD's sorry excuse of a Windows driver, since it does work fine on Linux with vaapi-copy...
It btw. wouldn't be an issue if madVR had D3D11VA deinterlacing.
I btw.² have to use Crimson 17.11.4 to avoid nasty stuttering in Firefox or when moving windows, there is no way to fix that, except of using workaround tool ClockBlocker.
(On Linux, I can simply force full clocks with a setting, which unfortunately is also required for best result in mpv.).

well this is the madVR thread so linux doesn't really matter here and and working hardware deinterlancing is not the only thing that benefits from copyback.

Only other realistic usecase would be AviSynth, which can be mostly avoided with madVR's own filters, and probably is too complex to use for even most madVR users anyway.

Peak nit measurment works with D3D11VA without copyback.
You're apparently right regarding detelecine, forgot about that (I don't consider it important for myself). Black bar cropping could be also done on the GPU. Well, madshi and many users were more interested in new video filters (ofc. absolutely legit)...

Yes. I think it by default assumes BT.709 gamut and 2.2 gamma if calibration options are set to "disable..."

Did some comparison between BD of Dunkirk and UHD BD of Dunkirk with madvr SDR to HDR conversion at 226, 255 and 280 nit setting. Compressing the HDR highlights was set to OFF.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d1emt2c9USVJNYHmlWdIshR90KGo7_3E/view?usp=sharing
The nit setting is a kind of tricky, because SDR displays are calibrated to 100-120nit, but here you can see, that going below 200 nit setting would clip the bright highlights unnaturally. In this shot, nit setting around 250-260 generates very close result to SDR blu-ray.

Yep USING it. But now I think it's all good :) I don't know how or why but I could change and save the "optimized" setting for the 23fps. I succeeded to achieve more than several days reaching the "no frame drops/repeats expected" sometimes.
Thx again for pointing me this new tutorial and for your time.
Hi again,
Unfortunately I don't know why but now - and I didn't change anything - my frames are stucked @ 1 frame per 3 minutes.
I restarted my custom mode from scratch but can't figure what the issue could be and the result is the same everytime.
Last time, the same day I asked for help I updated my nvidia driver - can't say if it was before or after - could it be the reason?
I'll keep trying to fix it but if someone has got an idea please share it :)

When you updated the driver, did you do a "clean install" or use DDU to remove the old driver? If so, go into the Nvidia Control Panel and make sure the power setting is "Adaptive" and that Vsync is turned on.

Nope, no clean install or DDU but adaptive and vsync is activated. Do you think I should properly reinstall?
There is one thing I'm not 100% certain I'm doing well is the first step during the "define timing parameters" selection.
EDID is recommanded in both the tutorial and the window but I noticed in some case I have to select a CVT v1, v2 or CRT. Does it matter? I think that depending of what I choose, later I can or can't switch the "optimized pixel clock" mode.

Hi guys, can anyone help me with a decision for budget gpu?
What is the best and why?
I will use it for 4k mobile phones clips in madVR, i got an S8, and i want them to look the best possible, my monitor is U2414h IPS, calibrated decently.
So, GTX960 vs GTX750 ti 4gb vs RX460/5604gb vs GTX950 2gb?
GTX750 ti i can get for 90$, GTX960 for 160$, RX460/560 around 130$, and GTX 950 around 100$, which is best for the money, and why? what is the difference from this cards in terms of features? should i also look into 1050 2gb? thanks.

960 or 1050ti ideally on a budget but that 950 is looking good for the price. You're downscaling so it doesn't use much processing power to do that unless you're doing 60fps or using ssim2D. I'd stick it in bicubic 150 and probably not bother with any other enhancements as you have tons of detail already.

2.0a and 2.0b only bring new HDR metadata to pass to the display, perhaps latest drivers on the GTX 960 fix that (can't confirm, don't have an HDR TV) but if that's not important to @psyde, this gfx card is quite capable...I'm getting 2160p60 @8 bit RGB or @10-bit 4:2:0 to the TV

you can generally ignore minor HDMI difference for GPUs. it doesn't matter it is all up to the driver what type of 0 and 1 are send over the cable.
the stuff a GPU driver can't fix is HDCP which is doesn't matter to us madVR user and the bandwidth of the HDMI connector.
hdmi 2.0a-z doesn't matter as long as the bandwidth is present to send the data and the driver is able to creates the data. there is a reason kepler cards can do limited HDMI 2.0
