Pretty much every DX9 card does DXVA2. Your 4770 will easily do it. You can press Ctrl+J to check whether deinterlacing is on or off. Also you can press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D once, it will also show whether deinterlacing is on/off. Furthermore, you can use the Cheese Slices test videos you can download here to check for deinterlacing quality:

all the BBC documentaries (VC-1) I have dont work with the libav decoder. shall I make samples?
The libav VC-1 decoder doesn't support interlaced decoding, unfortunately. Nothing I can do about it.

ok I guess my question then is how can I find out that this is working at all on my videos I play. I thought I had to activate the internal decoder for this, but it seems this wont be necessary.
so it all works automatically? what about stuff like ffdshow raw video setting or directvobsub running along?

It's working just like VMR9/EVR. Basically you will get deinterlacing automatically for any external decoder (also for the internal onces, of course), if the external decoder signals that deinterlacing is necessary. So if you get hardware deinterlacing with VMR9/EVR, you should also get it with madVR. If it isn't activated automatically for whatever reason, you can manually activate it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D twice. Of course you shouldn't do that for progressive content.

I think I misread the changelog, I though general dxva2 support was added and not just for deinterlacing. that should make sense then.
about ffdshow raw and directvobsub, I can have those running along then and it wont matter?
edit: when deinterlacing is activated, the subs suddenly looks a lot worse. guess directvobsub is automatically bypassed then?
unfortunately, my card seems to be too slow for deinterlacing to work. therefore, those vids which played fine before with or without deinterlacing still do, those which dont with or without the need for interlacing still dont. just my luck -.-

Nope, it's exactly as it should read. The option is meant for European h264 1080i50 movie broadcasts that were slowed down to 48i. These are all properly flagged and don't need to be deinterlaced. The "48i" means "48 fields per second interlaced".

I don't know about DirectVobSub. Please cross check with VMR9/EVR, just to be safe. If the same problem occurs with VMR9/EVR then there's nothing I can do about it.

The 4770 should be fast enough, I think. You may have to dial down the scaling algorithms a bit, if all else fails. Try exclusive mode with the "perform deinterlacing in separate thread" activated.

Looking at it again, I'm somewhat confused. If I disable scaling entirely so that it's displayed at 720x576, it actually looks like the linear light scaling result. The confusing thing, is that the "normal (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1535215#post1535215)" image is how that is supposed to look.
Is it possible that the disc was mastered in such a way that they assumed linear scaling would not be applied?
(a) ... how deinterlacing quality and performance compares to LAV CUVID, could you please check that? If LAV CUVID looks or performs better, maybe there's room for me to improve, too.Quality seems to be largely the same as CUVID, depending on how that's set up. (I leave it on weave, as adaptive doesn't work well for me)
I still get aliasing on "difficult" titles with both, but that seems like it's probably a hardware limitation.
I've yet to find anything that will do a great job with this for example. (but it may be the source itself)

I don't know if this is something you want to look into just now or not, but I still haven't been able to get madVR to decode (and now, deinterlace) DVDs in MPC-HC at all—the same thing applies to LAV Video as well though.
DVDs ripped to MKV work just fine, but DVDs themselves (file > open disc) want to load up the Microsoft decoder, which is awful, and if I disable that MPC-HC uses its internal decoder which is also poor, but at least lets me force weave which works on most titles.

I can reproduce the problem but I don't have the means at this point in time to figure out what's going on exactly. On a first glance it doesn't seem to be a bug in madVR, but I could be wrong on that. FWIW, the issue doesn't seem to occur if you switch subtitles via madVR's tray icon. Which is what I'm usually doing, anyway. Isn't madVR's tray icon much prettier than Haali's? :p
lol, it needs more soft edges and gloss :p. Anyway, I didn't realize madVR could switch subtitle streams so I'll use that in the meantime. As long as you're aware of the bug and can repro it, I'm happy :).

I'm using windows xp's qdvd.dll that I posted a while ago but I have recently noticed that when I play a dvd from the IFO file madVR shows that the source filter is reporting 25 fps for the dvd when most of the dvds I play are 23.976 soft coded to 29.976 and some telecined 29.976 interlaced dvds. I tried dslibdvdnav that was posted in the "Open Source DirectShow DVD Navigator" thread and it shows 29.976 fps from the source filter for all my dvds.
My question is: What can I do to signal the automatic refresh rate changer that DVD "A" is 23.976 sof-coded to 29.976 (so change the refresh rate to 23.976) and DVD "B" is telecined to 29.976 interlaced (so change the refresh rate to 29.976 (or 59Hz in my case))? I know about manually typing in the refresh rate in the file name but since this is a DVD structure that goes through the IFO first, how can I manually "switch" and "fake" the source filter reported refresh rate?
Could you possibly add an option to press a hotkey and "change" source reported rates from "Auto" to a specific fps?

Deinterlacing works great on a couple of my samples (1080i). Have not yet tested DVDs (I have about 500-700 US DVDs and about 400 PAL DVDs) though. I have a GTX580, so plenty of GPU horsepower, no dropped frames at all (deinterlacing queue stays at 6-9/9 when playing 1080i stuff). Will try to do a quality comparison between madVR and CUVID, later.
Very pleased with all the useful stuff you implement. Keep on the good work.

Great news on the inclusion of Deinterlacting! After some quick testing I'm finding I get some periods where there are a batch of dropped frames and the various queues are not that stable (esp in Windowed Mode), yet the CPU and GPU stats all look like it is cruising along. As an example the Average Stats may be;
- Deinterlace 1.30ms
- Rendering 1.64ms
- Present 0.11ms
Then max stats (5s) may blow deinterlacing and rendering out to over 20+ms causing the various queues to drop. At other times the Max stats sits happily under 5ms
I've only tested so far on my nvidia 450 with LAV Splitter, and either the MS or the LAV Video (CUVID off) / Audio Decoder, then madVR
The interlaced detection seems to be working fine on my test files with the correct ones being deinterlacted.
The quality looks good so far (yet to test on the HTPC with a big screen)

Honestly, I'm not ready to spend any thoughts on anything other than v0.78 deinterlacing test results at the moment. I've spent a large amount of time adding deinterlacing and I first want feedback before moving to any other topics.

I'm sorry, but this really *REALLY* sounds like a ZoomPlayer bug to me. I can still try to reproduce it, but not today.
(The ZP/madVR freeze-on-seek after freq. switch bug)

It looks longer than it is, I would say about 6min to test from ZP install to seeing the bug.

The ms time stats may not be too reliable. Please watch over how the various queues are filled / not filled. That's the most important thing. Maybe you can find out under which circumstances you get those batches of dropped frames? Which queues are empty exactly at that moment?

madVR automatically uses the best quality algorithm offered by your card. However, the best quality algorithms usually need a couple of older video frames to work, which madVR can't provide when deinterlacing the very first couple of frames. So for the first maybe 2-3 frames madVR uses bob deinterlacing. As soon as enough "old" frames are available, madVR switches to the best quality deinterlacing mode.

EDIT: Enabling Managed Upload Texture stops the crashes. Possibly you should automatically enable this when using DXVA2 Deinterlacing on WinXP? I seem to remember that setting hurting smoothness normally though. Maybe I should re-test smoothness with that setting, or is this something you can fix without that setting?
Also unsurprisingly, my 7800GTX is too slow to do other processing on 1080i30 when madVR is deinterlacing. I basically need to set all scaling to bilinear and disabled the 3DLUT for it to not drop frames.

Function: Deinterlacing works for me other than when I resize. When I scale up the 10-13/13, 4-7/9, 2-5/9, 2-5/8, 0-3/8 for decoder, upload, deinterlac, render and present queues respectively.
Quality: Deinterlacing certain "uncleanly interlaced" sources causes some artifacts and shimmering to occur. When compared to ffdshow's ffmpeg deinterlacer, ffmpeg does a much cleaner deinterlacement.
I have not compared to VMR/EVR deinterlacing yet because I don't know how to activate deinterlacing for VMR/EVR.

If you open the video, click at the start of it, and keep going through the frames (ctrl+right) you should be able to select the patterns.
It seems that using madVR to decode doesn't let you go back frame-by-frame though, only forward. (I was still using LAV Video when I tried that) It should be the third pattern.
For now I "only" want madVR to do the same deinterlacing that VMR9 and EVR do. FWIW, that video clip looks quite acceptable, deinterlaced with my ATI 6850.Fair enough. With madVR/CUVID deinterlacing, it is considerably better than the results I get with any of the software decoders I've tried, but there's still aliasing on a lot of the image, such as the benches in the background and the mic stand/cables when panning down.
I'm using an Nvidia card though, perhaps AMD handles it better?

When it is nice and stable, my queues look like this:
- decoder queue: 11-13/13
- upload queue: 7-9/9
- deinterlace queue: 6-9/9
- render queue: 5-8/8
- backbuffer queue 4-7/8 (note: I raised this to 8)
It seems to start with the upload queue starting to move around and it can drop to as low as 4-9 which will then in turn decrease all the other queues after that. Here is an example on a h264 1080/60i
- decoder queue: 11-13/13
- upload queue: 6-9/9
- deinterlace queue: 4-9/9
- render queue: 4-8/8
- backbuffer queue 0-7/8
EDIT - It could also just be "Observer effect"

That helped a lot, because it looks like my decoder queue never goes so deep down during playback. I mean progressive HD material, not interlaced. Now Im watching the problematic movie again ( using madVR decoders instead of LAVvideo ) and the decoder queue is 11-12/12, but drops regurarly to 6-12/12 or even 3-12/12. As you have now increased the decoder queue to 12, playback gave me couple of dropped frames but its definately better. The decoder queue can not fall down to 0-12/12 again, so I need to find out why the decoder queue is not stable.
Can you please tell me, what decoder queue looks like on your setup, when you play a 30Mb bitrate blu-ray movie? What is the decoder queue supposed to behave during movie playback?

madshi, one issue with the refresh rate changer. I have an mkv remuxed from DVD (MPEG-2 29i), and when putting a "23p" or "24p" in the file name, refresh rate changes to 50p (without that in the file name, I get correctly 60p but it's telecined content). I have 1080p24, 1080p50 and 1080p60 in the rates field in madVR options.
IVTC with decimation seems to be working fine on its own, compared to CUVID where decimation has to be done separately by something like an avisynth script. This is all with the 460 and LAV video in software mode, haven't switched to AMD yet.

Hmm a very strange behavior/bug with 0.78:
Launch the player, start playing a video. Minimize the player in the task bar (so the image isn't displayed) but keep playback going.
Wait like a minute. When you bring the player back up, the video plays super crazy fast to catch up with the audio.
The video itself stops being "refreshed" as soon as it stops being visible (player minimized), it seems.

Deinterlacing working beautifully with my quadcore monster HTPC with the AMD 5870. Catalyst 11.10 drivers. I threw one of my toughest interlaced videos at it. Given that machine's power, it doesn't surprise me that it was smoother than my nVidia 450 with CUVID. It's simply a matter of machine power. This is absolutely wonderful.

OK, so I switched to AMD, with the 5770 and 11.10 drivers. Some observations re: deinterlacing compared to NV, not just CUVID, but also software decoding with LAV (MS decoder for VC-1), which seemed to work similarly if not identically.
With AMD the output of my VC-1 blu-ray is 25p. With NV CUVID decoding set to 50p/60p and MS decoding + madVR deinterlacing, it seemed to be the same, very smooth. Don't have 29i blu-rays right now to test those.
With AMD IVTC is not working at all with the same remuxed mkv MPEG-2 I mentioned above. Refreshing at 23p, I get very choppy video with many dropped frames per second. With NV and LAV's MPEG-2 decoder it seemed OK. Switching decoders to madVR's mpeg-2 decoder is the same.
Also, this:

(5) ATI users please activate the switch "Advanced Color -> Dynamic Range" and set it to "Limited (16 - 235)". This will make sure that BTB and WTW are not cut off by DXVA2 deinterlacing.
This seems to be the opposite, I find that Full is the right setting, just like with Media Center and EVR.

You can use DScaler MPEG2 decoder, and madvr will automatically assume 23.976.

First, to remind you that the AMD machine is connected to a display that only supports 59 or 60. So I'm running at 59. I'm also using JRiver MC17's video clocking (reclock like) functionality.
Now, the content I was testing is home built 1080i recorded with my HD PVR. One video I've recorded in particular is a real pain in the ... uh yea. Anyway, it plays beautifully now. I haven't yet had a chance to watch some TiVo of WTV files (both mpeg-2). I'm watching V for Vendetta right now (remember, remember, the 5th of November :D) so I can't do any more testing tonight. But the h.264 1080i video recorded from the HD PVR is awesome.

When deinterlacing 1080i59 (or any "i59" video), is it normal that MPC-HC/Reclock/MadVR all report 29Hz, even though it should be 59Hz after deinterlacing? It looks fine to me (as good as using LAV CUVID, as far as I can tell), so I assume it really is running at 59Hz.
EDIT:
BTW: I installed my AMD card (5750), and tested with some fast moving content (tennis matches, fwiw, where it's easy for me to see a difference) - it was not nearly as smooth as with the NVIDIA GTS-450. Using EVR (with DXVA decoding) or yadif is clearly smoother than madVR on my AMD card - it really seemed like there was no deinterlacing going on. I tried playing around with some of the AMD video settings, and the "deinterlace in separate thread" option in madVR but no changes made any difference as far as I can see. The OSD shows that deinterlacing is being used, and all queues are full.
If you want a log, a sample, more details, or have any suggestions, just say the word.

Regarding the failure of exclusive mode when playing from a playlist of multiple files of various frame rates and resolutions:
I have a few more observations to add. First, the failure seems to happen when switching from a 29fps to a 24fps (or vice versa). I thought it might have been when switching from an SD avi to a 720p mkv, but after tracking the problem for weeks I have narrowed it down to a frame rate change. Secondly, I was toying with the idea of using "Disable Desktop Composition (Vista or Higher)" since I did not think having a composition frame rate of 60Hz worked well with a monitor resolution of 24Hz... it just seemed wrong, I might be fooling myself however I thought I would see what would happen when enabling this setting. Guess what, there was not one instance of exclusive mode failure during a very long playlist of varying frame rates. So I may have solved my "exclusive mode failed" issue by accident by testing a setting for another reason.
I just thought I would share my observations.

In ffdshow I have MPEG2 decoding (libavcodec, 'DVD decoding' ticked), NV12 output, and using the 'set interlaced flag in output media type' option. This combo seems to activate the deinterlacing on my gpu as I don't have it setup anywhere else. Err is that correct?

Did some more deinterlace testing on my HTPC and it looks pretty good. The issue with the dropped frames is less frequent on this PC and the queue fluctuation seems to rellay only be the SD stuff (worse was the DV-AVI material in 720x576/50i). All the HD material (1920x1080/50&60i in VC-1 and h264 as well as MPEG2 1440x1080/50i) had rock solid queues.

madVR deinterlacing has a tendency to crash at the beginning of MPEG2-TS files.

EDIT: Enabling Managed Upload Texture stops the crashes. Possibly you should automatically enable this when using DXVA2 Deinterlacing on WinXP? I seem to remember that setting hurting smoothness normally though. Maybe I should re-test smoothness with that setting, or is this something you can fix without that setting?
It seems that creating a texture at some point fails in your case. I'm not 100% sure why, but my best guess would be that madVR is simply running out of GPU RAM. Maybe I need to work on that, or maybe allow the render etc queues to be configured smaller. Deinterlacing definitely takes more GPU RAM. Not sure why Managed Textures stop the problem. It's possible Managed Textures resort to PCIe RAM when GPU RAM runs out, but I'm not sure...
Function: Deinterlacing works for me other than when I resize. When I scale up the 10-13/13, 4-7/9, 2-5/9, 2-5/8, 0-3/8 for decoder, upload, deinterlac, render and present queues respectively.
Interesting. Is this exclusive or windowed mode? What happens if you enable Bilinear scaling for chroma and luma up/down? Does it still not work then?
Quality: Deinterlacing certain "uncleanly interlaced" sources causes some artifacts and shimmering to occur. When compared to ffdshow's ffmpeg deinterlacer, ffmpeg does a much cleaner deinterlacement.
Which exact ffmpeg deinterlacer are you using? yadif? It would be *very* helpful if you could cross test this with VMR/EVR. If the same shimmering occurs there, then it's out of my hands.
I have not compared to VMR/EVR deinterlacing yet because I don't know how to activate deinterlacing for VMR/EVR.
You simply use VMR/EVR instead of madVR and make sure to use a decoder which sets the interlaced flags. E.g. LAV Video Decoder does, if you configure it accordingly.

Have you tested in windowed or exclusive mode? You don't have your GPU fixed at some lower clock? Does it not even work for interlaced SD content? Please cross check with VMR/EVR.
I'm using LAV Splitter. If you open the video, click at the start of it, and keep going through the frames (ctrl+right) you should be able to select the patterns.
It seems that using madVR to decode doesn't let you go back frame-by-frame though, only forward. (I was still using LAV Video when I tried that) It should be the third pattern.
I can't get them to stay. Tried different decoders and splitters. Anyway, I'll find a way somehow.
Fair enough. With madVR/CUVID deinterlacing, it is considerably better than the results I get with any of the software decoders I've tried, but there's still aliasing on a lot of the image, such as the benches in the background and the mic stand/cables when panning down.
I'm using an Nvidia card though, perhaps AMD handles it better?
Maybe. Is this a native video or movie source, btw (in case you know)? I've put it into my deinterlacing sample collection. Do you have any more such difficult to deinterlace samples?
Can you please tell me, what decoder queue looks like on your setup, when you play a 30Mb bitrate blu-ray movie? What is the decoder queue supposed to behave during movie playback?
The decoder queue is supposed to stay nearly full (at least 8/12) at all times.
madshi, one issue with the refresh rate changer. I have an mkv remuxed from DVD (MPEG-2 29i), and when putting a "23p" or "24p" in the file name, refresh rate changes to 50p (without that in the file name, I get correctly 60p but it's telecined content). I have 1080p24, 1080p50 and 1080p60 in the rates field in madVR options.
Will check that.
IVTC with decimation seems to be working fine on its own, compared to CUVID where decimation has to be done separately by something like an avisynth script. This is all with the 460 and LAV video in software mode, haven't switched to AMD yet.
With AMD IVTC is not working at all with the same remuxed mkv MPEG-2 I mentioned above. Refreshing at 23p, I get very choppy video with many dropped frames per second. With NV and LAV's MPEG-2 decoder it seemed OK. Switching decoders to madVR's mpeg-2 decoder is the same.
Decimation should not be working at all, neither with NVidia nor with AMD. Except for soft-telecined movies. There it's not really decimation, but instead the decoder outputs the soft-telecined frames without splitting them up and DXVA simply leaves these frames untouched. It kinda looks like decimation, but it isn't really. But again, there should be no difference between ATI and NVidia. I'm not 100% sure what CUDA does, but I suspect it should be no different to DXVA in terms of decimation. But I don't really know, nevcairiel might be able to answer that.
Hmm a very strange behavior/bug with 0.78:
Launch the player, start playing a video. Minimize the player in the task bar (so the image isn't displayed) but keep playback going.
Wait like a minute. When you bring the player back up, the video plays super crazy fast to catch up with the audio.
The video itself stops being "refreshed" as soon as it stops being visible (player minimized), it seems.
Is this a new problem with v0.78?
Subs disappear when I pause the video. I'm using v0.78 of course.
This should happen only if you have the madVR debug OSD (Ctrl+J) active. Without the madVR debug OSD the subs should not disappear if you pause the video. Which media player are you using?
Deinterlacing working beautifully with my quadcore monster HTPC with the AMD 5870. Catalyst 11.10 drivers. I threw one of my toughest interlaced videos at it. Given that machine's power, it doesn't surprise me that it was smoother than my nVidia 450 with CUVID. It's simply a matter of machine power. This is absolutely wonderful.

This seems to be the opposite, I find that Full is the right setting, just like with Media Center and EVR.
What makes you say that? Do you get different black/white levels when switching that option? You should not, when using madVR. You probably will with EVR, but not with madVR. If you do, then please upload two small madVR logs, one with that option off and one with it on. Thx.

How do you know? Does Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D claim deinterlacing is off? And you can't turn it on?
When deinterlacing 1080i59 (or any "i59" video), is it normal that MPC-HC/Reclock/MadVR all report 29Hz, even though it should be 59Hz after deinterlacing? It looks fine to me (as good as using LAV CUVID, as far as I can tell), so I assume it really is running at 59Hz.
I'm not sure what MPC-HC and Reclock will show, but I guess it's ok that way. Just make sure madVR says that deinterlacing is on.
I installed my AMD card (5750), and tested with some fast moving content (tennis matches, fwiw, where it's easy for me to see a difference) - it was not nearly as smooth as with the NVIDIA GTS-450. Using EVR (with DXVA decoding) or yadif is clearly smoother than madVR on my AMD card - it really seemed like there was no deinterlacing going on. I tried playing around with some of the AMD video settings, and the "deinterlace in separate thread" option in madVR but no changes made any difference as far as I can see. The OSD shows that deinterlacing is being used, and all queues are full.
Are there dropped frames? Are you using the same decoder for madVR and EVR? Can you see the difference in screenshots? Or is the non-smoothness more looking like frame drops, with no difference visible in screenschots?
I was toying with the idea of using "Disable Desktop Composition (Vista or Higher)" since I did not think having a composition frame rate of 60Hz worked well with a monitor resolution of 24Hz... it just seemed wrong, I might be fooling myself however I thought I would see what would happen when enabling this setting. Guess what, there was not one instance of exclusive mode failure during a very long playlist of varying frame rates. So I may have solved my "exclusive mode failed" issue by accident by testing a setting for another reason.

Like 6233638 says, File > Open Disc uses Microsoft DTV-DVD automatically and blocking that uses internal MPC-HC one which is poor. The only problem with the Microsoft one was lack of navigation and subtitles, quality was fine IMO.

Whether you can make madVR work with DVDs or not has nothing to do with deinterlacing. That's still the same problem as in the past. If you do get it to work, then deinterlacing should work just fine. Depending on the decoder deinterlacing might get turned on automatically or not. If it doesn't and you need it, you can turn it on manually by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D twice.
Did some more deinterlace testing on my HTPC and it looks pretty good. The issue with the dropped frames is less frequent on this PC and the queue fluctuation seems to rellay only be the SD stuff (worse was the DV-AVI material in 720x576/50i). All the HD material (1920x1080/50&60i in VC-1 and h264 as well as MPEG2 1440x1080/50i) had rock solid queues.
It's pretty weird that you have problems with SD content but not with HD content! The other way round would make more sense... :confused:

Just tried this on my XPSP3 PC. Can't reproduce it. I minimize. Audio continues to play. After 1 minute I restore the window and video continues to play just fine.
