This sounds not great, but freakin AWESOME!! Right now I use MPC-HC as external player with a .xml script. This works ok but it looks a little clumsy: when you start playing the movie from within XBMC, the windows desktop is shown for a few miliseconds and you get a (harly noticable, but still) screen flicker.
youre not alone i use an playercorefactory.xml customized for this myself for xbmc you think id use the default shitty ass player theyve implemented in xbmc? lolz xD
and having to use an external player in conjunction with xbmc will be over soon ...shouldnt take too long now ive waited 8 months for this request to be taken on ..you hear right it was i who originally requested this to be done ;)
and am greatful that this is finally being taken on ....

Can madVR be used to watch 3D movies like Half-SBS, Full-SBS, Over and Under?
If so how?

Is there a point selecting only 10bit/16bit formats in Lav Codecs ?
BTW thanks Madshi for your video renderer its freaking awsome using it from early 0.5 build :) You are awsome.
Is there going to be a version with 10bit output instead of 8bit?
Heard even Intel's integrated graphics are going to support full 10bit output in their Ivy Bridge cpu.
I know it was discussed many times but didn't understand if its going to be implemented in future versions.
Thank you.

If you use madVR, don't disable any of the formats. It'll use the best matching format automatically. Conversion into any format will not benefit you.

im not gona count up the list or else this thread would derail in an instant and afterall this thread is bout madvr and troubleshooting , xbmc just so happens to being modded by tiben and madshi..yes madshi hes the reason why tiben is even bothering to mod xbmc's media playback since hed never be able to pull it off by himself well and of course as said cause ive pestered him 8 months long with emails xD ,thats the reason why its even

p.s: mpchc is good for when you are doing media files testing, setting codec's etc aka main work on the pc in windows explorer so it still has some use in my inventory ,but for actually sitting back , relaxing and enjoying a movie, music,tv,music videos, comics, photos , games etc you name it xbmc does it ...yeah xbmc is the way to go hands down!

well me mentioning xbmc and tiben working on it a couple times, counts in my eyes as low level advertising ;), thou i cant help myself its too freakin exciting to say the least
about linked and unlinked multi-zone playback ...that question youd have to ask over at the xbmc forums since i have no idea tbh xD
thou if you plan on playing more than one movie at the same time ...for whatever funny reason then the clear answer would be NO you cant playback 2 porns or more at the same time , for that youd have to use mpchc xD

I don't get peoples obsessions with skins or nice looking UIs.
I want to watch the movie, not the player. The player needs to be efficient, and i should only need to look at it as short as possible. :)
Also, i greatly prefer a real DirectShow player over any all-in-one player where i have zero control over the playback chain. :D
DSplayer back when it was initially created was still terribly buggy, and from what i read, its mostly just a port of the old code to the new thing, so it'll still take ages to iron it out into a stable player. (Also, there was a reason it was canned in the first place)
Anyhow, this is still OT and should be taken elsewhere.

Well, probably the GPU drivers behave different in win7, or maybe the OS itself. As I said, I will try to get a hold of my sister's laptop, but I can't promise anything.
Now I can play the videos in my kmplayer using madvr under windows xp sp3 compatibility mode. If i disable the compatibility xp mode, the kmp will always hang.

Look for Dropped/delayed frames (should be down the OSD when you press ctrl+j) as well as presentation glitches (in full-screen exclusive mode FSE). Needless to say the optimum value should be ZERO for all those. If you still have problems Disable the Auto Settings in general rendering and adjust the CPU/GPU queue till you hit the sweet spot (For me its a ratio; on my Archeological HD3430 the CPU/GPU queue ratio is usually 2:1, the HD5770 worked out of the box after disabling Use a seperate device for presentation not a very popular feature with ATI cards). IF you still face issues Try adjusting backbuffer values in windowed mode and ahead frames in fullscreen exclusive (the value of 8 worked for me on both but your YMMV in FSE experiment with values between 6-10). IF all of this fails you might as well try the last resort options in the FSE that are under "don't use the following options unless you absolutely need them for glitch-free playback"
hope it helps!
NB As for installation methods. When it comes to filters I always Recommend a CLEAN INSTALL. Overwriting files of previous installation is asking for trouble. Remove the old renderer. Perform a thorough cleanup especially of the registry (use a registry cleaner a good one, or if you're like me & you know your way around the registry. Find the obsolete values and banish them to oblivion, a back up is good if things go south).
Thanks Paladin I'll try that out...first the registry clean up..i do uninstall always first but not the reg cleaner.

...its THE BEST MEDIA CENTER out there!!! nothing comes close ...
Sorry had to chime in on this. There is Mediaportal.
Mediaportal was originally created off a fork off XBMC a long long time ago, however is much more aligned with extensibility and customisation. For example, it would use directshow filters and gave you some control over the filter choice which was one reason why I chose it. (I could use reclock etc). It also has a crazy library of extremely powerful plugins & supports client/server TV tuner setups etc.
Back in 08 I raised a topic on re: madVR on the MP forums and it was put on the backburner, but maybe they can leverage off this work.
Still, MP is using the smooth playback evr mod originally created by the maker of gothsync/gothplayer, which is working pretty well.

If the stream is like that
Width : 720 pixels
Height : 480 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Original display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Standard : Component
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Scan order : Top Field First
or like that
Width : 720 pixels
Height : 576 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Standard : PAL
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
can not switch to film mode (cntrl+alt+shift+t). OSD (cntrl+j) does not say anything about IVTC.
That is DVD content in .mkv.
The issue is Scan type : Progressive?

Madshi, regarding FSE mode, is it likely that possible future versions may be less likely to glitch?
When I had an AMD card glitches weren't an issue but with Nvidia card it's a different story.
I've settled for the occasional glitch rather than the low queues and it's working out okay.
Is there any you would be looking into ease of playback on Nvidia's hardware in the future? Or is the current code already designed to suit everything as well as it can? Thanks.

I have had a little time and have done more testing with 080 and the dropped frame issue I have. I have discovered that enabling 'overshoot max frame latency' in FSE mode fixes the dropped frames but creates other issues that don't happen if I enable the debug mode for logging (using the same settings).
With the release version with above enabled the render and present queues gradually drop and don't recover. After a short time lip sync issues appear. I enabled the debug mode to get a log for you, however while the render and present queues drop they actually recover so its impossible for me to get you a log of whats happening in the release build.
This is not happening in 079 and I also have no need to use 'overshoot max frame latency' to get stable playback with the previous version. This is something that started with 080. I also noticed that with 080 an aero message shows in the stats on the 2nd line (composition rate) that is not there in 079 when using identical settings (I do not disable aero for playback). Is that normal?
Just to remind you of my setup.
win7x64, gtx295, gtx240 dual monitor setup, 120hz on primary, secondary is where I watch video (gt240). I tried lowering primary Hz to 60 as I remember high refresh rates were an issue in the past but it did not fix my issue. I'm using an external decoder also (LAV)
I'm sure your going to have a break from madVR over the christmas period so I don't want this situation to take away from that at all, I'm quite happy using 079.
Have a great christmas and new year.

I can confirm that here too, before I needed Reclock for optimum playback and I've just tested it now without Reclock and it's pretty much exactly the same without it, no dropped or delayed frames and the only thing I get is the occasional presentation glitch being added to the counter in the OSD.
Before I used to get heaps and heaps of dropped frames, so whoever did whatever to fix it, thanks :p

Madshi, i still get a color shift but now i get it not only in .MKV, but in everything i have on my PC, i tested with .MOV, DVD (.VOB, .IFO), .AVI and .MKV.
UPDATE:
Weird, ive turnt off my TV, enabled Dynamic Range 16-235 and Pulldown detection in CCC, and the colors were alright. When i reverted back to my old settings Dynamic Range Off and Pulldown detection Off, the colors didnt shift anymore. Anyways, its probably fixed :).
Ok, so ive found the problem. The problem is when i havent got CCC running the color shift appears on ALL videos. If i execute the CCC the color shift is gone, but now only the washed out picture is available :/

Thats on purpose, and unlikely to change for "gamer" cards.
10-bit output is mostly used for professional graphic tasks, and the Firepro cards just cost that much more. ;)

That frequency sounds about right for an AMD card. ReClock has to resample the audio to achieve perfect sync, so if you needed it before, you still need it, cause madVR doesn't do that.

Please note that the IVTC algorithm is brand new and has a number of limitations. It seems to work pretty well in my limited tests, but more broad testing by you guys is needed to find out whether it really works well enough. Here's a list of limitations:
(1) It currently runs single threaded on the CPU. I plan to eventually move this to the GPU, but I'll need to use CUDA/OpenCL for that, and from ATI I need a driver with full OpenCL 1.2 support, which is not available yet. So it might take quite a while before I can move this to the GPU. For now it will have to run on the CPU.
(2) Although I've written SSE2 assembler, it still consumes quite a bit of CPU power. If your CPU is already on the fence with HD decoding, you probably won't be able to use madVR's IVTC algorithm with h264/VC-1 HD content. It might still work with MPEG2 content for you, since that's easier on the CPU. It should definitely work with all SD content. If your CPU is plenty fast, there's no problem, of course.
(3) Although all possible cadences should be supported in theory, I've mainly tested 3:2 and 2:2, so Anime support might need some tweaking. It does generally seem to work well enough for a first version, from my limited tests with Anime sources.
(4) For now, madVR does not even try to detect whether a video is natively interlaced or telecined. As a result, madVR defaults to DXVA deinterlacing, because DXVA deinterlacing can handle all types of content reasonably well. You have to manually switch to madVR's new IVTC algorithm by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T twice ("T" stands for content [T]ype). Default is "video mode", which is deinterlaced by using DXVA. By switching the content type to "film mode", you activate madVR's new IVTC algorithm. In the future, I'm planning to add automatic detection for the content type, so you don't have to switch manually.
(5) The current version of the IVTC algorithm always expects the whole frame to be telecined content. Video mode overlays or mixed video/film (in one frame) content is not supported at the moment.
(6) Refresh rate switching does not currently take the decimation ability of the IVTC algorithm into account, so it won't switch to 24Hz mode automatically. Sorry about that. You can work around it by tagging your files with "24p" or "23p". The refresh rate changer will be improved in a future version to take IVTC into account.
Please report any problems you have with the IVTC algorithm. But before you report, please make sure that content you have is really telecined. I've found that most PAL Animes are field blended, which is an ugly mess and can't be IVTCed at all. The only way to handle such Anime content is to use video mode deinterlacing.
Thanks. 3 questions
1) Problem with ivtc and ffdshow video decoder
If I use ffdshow video decoder, I can't use your ivtc.
I can use your ivtc only with your video decoder or lav video decoder.
Maybe it's a bug or not. But if it's not a bug is it possible to add support of ivtc with ffdshow H264 decoder?
2) When I use ivtc, mpc osd (in window mode) indicate 30 fps (fraps show 24fps i nwindows mode) and not 24 fps. Is it normal?
In ctrl+j here is:
deinterlacing on
film mode, cadence 3:2
3) in madvr here is in rendering settings:
adjust queue sizes to gpu ram size.
What means? By default it is checked. Is it good or not?

Has anyone else noticed that reclock doesn't seem to be needed any more.. Without reclock activated I am still getting just one frame repeat every hour for most refresh rates! Has madshi improved things over the last few versions?
I don't think I need Reclock too since I won't notice a dropped frame every 5 minutes.
But madVR can't do anything if the refresh rate is not perfectly equal at display frequency. So no, I don't think there have been improvements. It's just that you don't see the dropped frames because there are few.
The only way to be in perfect sync is still to use Reclock. But indeed, does it worth it ? Each one will have his opinion.
In my case, I let Reclock doing the sync (and then audio resample) job.

Providing ffdshow passes the correct flags for soft telecine so that MadVR can perform IVTC, there should not be any problem. There are options in ffdshow regarding interlaced flags that might solve your problem. Please see this Core Codec thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1544374#post1544374) for further background reading.

I honestly think that there are enough options in madVR to have a separate tweak/test application to benchmark different combinations of settings with a whole array of tools to be able to tell the explicit differences between combinations of settings. Luma and chroma masking is a good one to have for that matter.

One thing that was never communicated there:
You cannot down-sample RGB, so if you're sending RGB, you always send full 4:4:4. Its quite certainly possible that your TV does not display that as RGB, but internally processes it as YCrCb 4:2:2, losing precision in the process, but if RGB goes over the HDMI bus, it will be 4:4:4 (such terms dont even apply to RGB)
PS:
What does "1007" mean? :d

One set driver to RGB444, send picture over DVI output (w/o sound) to TV: result 444. Picture over HDMI output (w/ sound) to TV: result 422. What does it mean and what to do?
"1007" means Onkyo 1007.

420 is not supported by HDMI, read the thread intro. You got 422.
@Nev, I got 1007 and you know what I mean. I much more care about the picture (chroma) ATM.
I assume you're correct, for me it still doesn't really make a difference though. Thanks for the info.

Does the "overshoot max frame latancy" setting interfere with queuing in madvr? Seems i get more stable playback with it enabled but "present queue" is dropping and it dosn't refill unless i pause and play. I have a fast pc so there should be lots of cpu-power. What does the setting do excactley?

Yea, don't enable that. Toy around with the queues until you find a sweet spot if leaving them at auto doesn't work. Make sure you've done a clean installation of madVR v0.80.
