If you get crashes, you might want to disable any overclocking for starters. Also, there is no need to max out madvr settings, bigger is not necessarily better. Especially on sharpening algos. For example, I'd consider any picture destroyed at strength 4. There are chroma upscaling comparisons somewhere in this thread, but I can't find them right now so you just have to take my word - chroma upscaling is less important than luma and if you can run jinc for chroma you are totally fine and maybe even that is an overkill. I use bilateral.

I had a discussion with Nvidia, and it seems they make the hardest efforts possible to disable people from using Nvidia Gpu for video playback, because it consumes more power this way.

Image upscaling scales both the luma and chroma channels after the subsampled chroma is upscaled to match the native luma resolution (after chroma upscaling).

What stuttering do you mean ? I had stuttering fixed it using PreRender 3 in Nvidia Control Panel and Madvr PreRender 4

Don't you have an option in nvidia control panel where you can set the internal and external GPU per application? (I have optimus system as well, although it's older than yours, see my signature for details).
If you have then you don't have to use nvidiainspector for this: there you can assign nvidia GPU to mpc-hc, but at first:
you have to rename the 'mpc-hc.exe' to e.g. 'game32.exe' or 'game64.exe'. Then it should work!
I'm still using nvidiainspector, but only for 1 purpose: underclocking the nvidia gpu. :)

Uninstall first the x86? If I don't, I will have 2 separate programs?

If you have then you don't have to use nvidiainspector for this: there you can assign nvidia GPU to mpc-hc, but at first:

Another question. I get a crash every time I open MPC-hc + madVR and get to fullscreen. It only happens the first time I go fullscreen after restart, or after not using the program for a long time.
I have no overclocking, no mods, and only the basic driver as it came from my laptop's maker. I guess that it would solve itself if I reinstall MPC-HC and madvr, or reinstall windows or reinstall Nvidia driver... But I am really curious why this happens.

You don't have to uninstall them, just "install" the x64 flavors as well. E.g. Copy the mpc-hc x64 files into a different directory, then make it default if you like. MadVR automatically register the x64 filter. (I don't know about XySubFilter.) Then you can use both the x32 and x64 if you like (can be good if something isn't working well on one of them).
How can I retain the settings of the 3 applications I have?
MPC-HC and MadVR use the same settings from the registry (if you didn't specify to store/read settings from ini or bin (in case of madvr) file).

I haven't experienced anything like this before. Create a crash report, and upload it somewhere for Madshi, maybe he can figure out something from it.
Isn't there any stuck mpc-hc/madvr processes? Take a look in the process list in Windows.

Do you mean in devices > display modes? But then for content the same resolution of my TV, will madVR do a downscaling only to see it upscaled again by TV?
I do have a slow GPU; right now I have Bilinear anyway...at least I want to see if my TV can do it better than Bilinear!

for madshi: i found that the stutters in fullscreen are caused by the fullscreen exclusive mode (only when i'm using 2 monitor cloned or extended)
by disabling the fullscr exclusive mode in madvr option no longer stutter
so i have a question: what are the advantages of the fullscreen mode over the windowed mode?

More control for the renderer, which is useful on Windows 7, as otherwise DWM is in power and it's not totally reliable with that OS.
Since Windows 8, windowed fullscreen is as reliable as exclusive mode for very most people. So it's totally ok not to use FSE.
Another advantage of FSE would be that it can make the GPU output 10 bit in DX11 mode, but that's not a great advantage either since madVR has very good dithering modes (ordered is fast & good).

Yes and yes, only if you don't play the content of the chosen resolution of the display! (e.g. 720p content on 1280x720 / 1360*xxx resolution). That's how you can test it.
Otherwise if you use 1080p content on a 1080p resolution there's no image upscaling just chroma upscaling.
You can't get more speed then that (upscaling-wise). That's how could happen that on a 1080p display playing a full bluray disc is less stressful for the laptop/pc than playing e.g. a 720p content.
Try out FSE Old path, maybe you'll get more speed (see below).

For me only clone mode produce problem (understandably) in FSE not extended.
A note to aufkrawall's post: on my system FSE Old Path is way faster than all the other modes, so depending on your config, you can have a huge performance gain with it. Just try it out, see whether it works for you or not.
- enable full screen exclusive mode, and on the full screen exclusive properties uncheck 'present frames in advance' (after this you should see it's activated in OSD, FSE (Old path))
In this mode you can't use NNEDI3 upscaler and there won't be 10bit playback.

I think I have found a bug. I am using the last development version of MPC-HC with the last version of XYSubFilter and the last version of MadVR
The bug happens in MadVR plus XYSubFilter when displaying upscaled VobSub subtitles.
It is an anime episode, 848x480 internal resolution, MPEG4 (H264) video, softcoded VobSub subtitles.
When displaying the vid at 1x resolution the subtitles are correctly displayed at the bottom of the screen.
When the vid is at 50% resolution (in window mode) it doesn't show subtitles at all.
If the vid is upscaled, resolution 2x (window mode) or it is upscaled fullscreen at 1920x1080 the subtitles appear on the left and in the middle of the screen and the subtitles themselves are not upscaled (they appear with the same size than in the resolution 848x480).
MadVR with other subtitles filters (VSFilter and Internal MPCHC filter) display correctly the subtitles upscaled and the bottom of the screen.
The MPCHC Personalized Enhanced Video Renderer with XYSubFilter shows the subtitles correctly too.
You can see screenshots of the vid here with the subtitles. In all these screenshots I am using MPCHC, MadVR and XYSubFilter.

Has anybody tried the new AMD Crimson driver with DX11 FSE?
It should limit prerendered frames for every application to 1, which might be a problem here.
If you report this to AMD, please ask them not to remove this feature completely, as it is extremely useful for games, but to implement options to be able to control it.

Ok, so it seems that I got to make it sort of stable, now... I think I will install the Windows 10 EDU, my university gave me. I wonder if this will make a difference on how good madVR works.
I also wonder if that one is updated to the latest november update, as the changes seem for the better.

I have to disable all (sXBR) image doubling for 1916x1076 to run smoothly at 3820x2160.

On my setup, I have noticed that for content which is just shy of 1080p resolution (1916x1076), performance is drastically worse than with 1080p or even 720p. This has been the case since at least 89.12, maybe a version or two earlier than that.
I have to disable all (sXBR) image doubling for 1916x1076 to run smoothly at 3820x2160.
What upscaling algorithm do you use? Scaling 3832x2152 to 3840x2160 could be pretty taxing. Maybe your GPU is even running out of memory trying to do that, that would slow things down a lot.

I also notice cropped videos (such as 1916 vs. 1920) cause madVR to work much harder. At 1080p -> 1080p, I was able to disable scaling of these files under zoom control to keep madVR from creeping over the rendering queue. I haven't noticed the same for 720p content, but I haven't been watching for strangely-cropped 720p videos.

Image Doubling: Octuple luma/chroma super-xbr 150
Zoom Control is set to "disable scaling if image size changes by only...15 lines or less"
GPU is AMD 7970

Actually I have madVR and XySubFilter in the MPC-HC x86 folder, therefore this should be another problem if I want to install MPC-HC x64 and retain their settings. I'm scared to try anything if I don't know what I'm doing. Can I simply move these 2 filter folders on new MPC-HC x64 folder?

Do you have image quadrupling set to "always"?
In that case when watching 1920x1080 only doubling runs but when watching 1916x1076 both doubling and quadrupling run. Doubling 3832x2152 to 7664x4304 and then downscaling to 3840x2160 takes a lot of performance and is pointless. Set quadrupling to only run with 1.5 or 2x scaling, in fact I would recommend setting doubling and quadrupling to 1.5x scaling, maybe 1.2x if you really like doubling, but always does more harm than good in my opinion.
Doubling or Quadrupling do not run unless the image is upscaled, no matter what you set in "image doubling" quadrupling will never run for 1920x1080 video on a 4K display.

If you send 1920x1080 TV 1280x720 signal, then yes, it should fill the screen. I don't know why you would want to do this instead of using lighter players though. I'm guessing whatever good madvr is achieving is lost during TV's processing.

I found a strange behavior/bug by using the new Radeon Crimson driver. I updated recently the rest of the video software (madVR, LAV filters, MPC HC nightly) so the driver is not certainly the culprit.
GPU: Radeon R7 250
Driver: Radeon Crimson
affected rendering modes: fullscreen modes (both windowed and exlusive), no problem while NOT rendering fullscreen
behavior: all 4 queues + rendering and presenting times jumping wildly, queues partially running empty so dropped frames, decoder queue showing 20-25/24 ;)
"remedy": deactivating smoothmotion and/or checking "use 10bit image buffer instead of 16bit" in trade quality for performance section -> normal behavior

Reverted now back to Catalyst 15.7.1. Everything ok now. In my case Radeon Crimson seems to be not ok for my system. Furthermore I found out that most of video related settings are completely removed from Control Center. I stay with 15.7.1 meanwhile, was a mistake to install new AMD crap.

New test with Crimson: new "real" remedy: reducing rendering queues to maximum 21 (was 24 in my case).

As for fullscreen exclusive mode, I have it disabled because the screenshot issue.
My gpu is an integrated in an old laptop!
Screenshot??? Use a different player for that functionality or switch to windowed mode in madvr until you take one.
Was FSE Old path faster for you?
Can I simply move these 2 filter folders on new MPC-HC x64 folder?
Unistall them first, move them, them install them again.

I found a strange behavior/bug by using the new Radeon Crimson driver. I updated recently the rest of the video software (madVR, LAV filters, MPC HC nightly) so the driver is not certainly the culprit.
GPU: Radeon R7 250
Driver: Radeon Crimson
affected rendering modes: fullscreen modes (both windowed and exlusive), no problem while NOT rendering fullscreen
behavior: all 4 queues + rendering and presenting times jumping wildly, queues partially running empty so dropped frames, decoder queue showing 20-25/24 ;)
"remedy": deactivating smoothmotion and/or checking "use 10bit image buffer instead of 16bit" in trade quality for performance section -> normal behavior

The issue is the "fullscreen exclusive" option. It's not supported on the new AMD driver. Disable that and use windows overlay... then it works for me.
The new driver is 3-5% faster so it's worth trying it out.

FSE Works fine for me, so saying it's not supported is a little over the top.
As for the new AMD drivers... I think they are pretty good, still in need of some work (some settings are in the old CCC interface and others in the new interface)... But one thing that is fantastic, the new Custom Resolutions. No need for a separate app like CRU anymore

Many of us are experiencing the same problem: i1d3 (or low end colorimeters) measure our display with a perfect black (accuracy problem) and the result is always a linear gamma from 0 to 100%. The reason is simple: perfect black = infinite contrast ratio but we don't have an oled tv!
As a consequence the blacks are crushed between 0 to approximately 2.5%.
The 17-18 blanking bars are always invisibles after 3dlut creation.
I tried to decrease the gamma @1.25% with videoequalizer v2.06. It works very good (17-18 became visibles again) but it's not compatible with a 3dlut and I can't use this solution.
Do you think it could be possible to create a tool in madvr to modify the gamma curve in realtime after the 3dlut?
The goal is not to make a new gamma curve but only to correct the grayscale with our eyes at very low ire because the i1d3 can't.
A 100 points gamma editor would be really amazing for us. Something like videoequalizer but in madvr, after the 3dlut...
The idea is just to lower the gamma between 0 to 5%. It would be so cool...
I'm not sure if it's clear or if it's the good way to ask but... :D

and yeah don't forget disco madVR before the PC crashed.
and AMD calls that "stable"...

I would add image doubling. super-xbr or low values of NNEDI3 luma doubling would improve the image further.
You could also add SuperRes from upscaling refinement to make the image sharper. SuperRes + enhance detail is another possibility.

By "i1d3" I assume you mean Eye-One Display Pro? If so, you're probably doing it wrong. I regularly measure very deep black levels with that color sensor with no issues. Even if there were issues, it would most likely result in noise near black, as opposed to the sensor reporting a "perfect" black like you're suggesting. Are you sure your sensor is not faulty? What software are you using for the measurements?

It is the deinterlacing likely causing the issue. madVR uses some of the GPU's muscle to deinterlace. You would have to reduce your settings. Start with using Ordered Dithering and then reducing chroma upscaling to something like Lanczos3 + AR.
You can create separate profiles for deinterlaced content (srcInterlaced) using madVR profile rules, which what I would recommend. Then, you could turn down your settings when deinterlacing is encountered, and turn them back up when it is not.
Also, I realize you are likely using image quadrupling at 720p -> 2160p. You could simplify things by disabling image quadrupling and using image doubling + image upscaling instead. I think I would still go with the separate profile for deinterlaced content, but that would probably provide immediate relief to your graphics card.
The moral of the story is your settings are likely too aggressive for your card.

Thanks for that. I didn't know that. I have only encountered one deinterlaced video in my own travels. But that is a much bigger deal.
So to the previous poster...You might have to completely abandon image doubling for these sources and use lesser settings. I thought a tweak here or there would bring the rendering queue down.
Also, you could use (deintFps > X) to create separate profile rules as opposed to (srcInterlaced), because huhn says it is the deinterlaced frame rate that is the problem once interlacing is complete, not the deinterlacing itself. The source frame rate and amount of scaling are two most important factors in determining the load placed on madVR.
As a starting point, these are my rules for a 1080p display:

Do you have image quadrupling set to "always"?
In that case when watching 1920x1080 only doubling runs but when watching 1916x1076 both doubling and quadrupling run. Doubling 3832x2152 to 7664x4304 and then downscaling to 3840x2160 takes a lot of performance and is pointless. Set quadrupling to only run with 1.5 or 2x scaling, in fact I would recommend setting doubling and quadrupling to 1.5x scaling, maybe 1.2x if you really like doubling, but always does more harm than good in my opinion.
Doubling or Quadrupling do not run unless the image is upscaled, no matter what you set in "image doubling" quadrupling will never run for 1920x1080 video on a 4K display.
I did have it set to always, like you suspected.
With your explanation, I finally understand how to set image doubling. It all makes sense now! And the OSD will show what is happening, as others have pointed out.

What about 25fps (mostly european) videos?
I think you should check with 30 fps instead of 24.
And you can use more generic profile names like sd (480p), hd (720p), fhd (1080p) and uhd (>1080p).
So something like these: uhd, uhd_hifps, fhd, fhd_hifps, hd, hd_hifps, sd, sd_hifps.
You can remove the underscore to suit madshi's naming preferences.
