Cropping the movie won't change the aspect ratio of the pixels and the height of all aspect ratios is the same. I would think applying the projector's anamorphic stretch to the image cropped from madVR would result in the correct pixel dimensions if the anamorphic scaling doesn't know the aspect ratio of the source.
this beats the point of an anamoprhic lens if you can't use most of the pixels. the other very important part an anamoprhic lens it gives you is more brightness you don't have to over throw.
so you should always use as much pixel as possible.

That simply is BS. See some examples:
dark knight bluray (https://ibb.co/PzG7f93)
dark knight uhd (https://ibb.co/tXZyL53)

interstellar bluray (https://ibb.co/vHxH39k)
interstellar uhd (https://ibb.co/nBTYT48)

Yes, that's what I was talking about. I think that at least in part that's because of the ICtCp color correction, and it's not fixed. It looks too exaggerated in your screenshots, in my case it's not so much. If that's the only cause, you can get rid of that yellow/orange (sometimes even red) cast by checking "compromise on HDR tone & gamut mapping accuracy" under "trade quality for performance", which I think means that the tone mapping in done in RGB. The side effects are an excesive desaturation especially of highlights, and a hue shift of very brigh and saturated greens and reds to yellow which I actually find more pleasant.

I don't think it is BS. The original Blu-ray version was color graded as you wanted it to appear. It was Christopher Nolan that didn't want any manipulation of the Kodak film scans. All of his UHD movies distinctly look like old film prints. I don't always like it the look in some of those movies, but I don't think anyone would deliberately color the movie that way.
Nolan pulled the same stuff for 2001 re-release (http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2018/04/nolans-yellowish-teal-tinted-2001-obviously-sucks/).
Warner is doing it again for the upcoming Batman releases (see screenshots (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Batman-4K-Blu-ray/230456/))
This is done on purpose. Teal & Orange grading is a thing in hollywood nowadays (read more about why they do it here (http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html)). I am ok with the artistic choice for a new movie, but I dislike it when they retroactively apply it to an older one that did not have this look before.

There may be other things going on perhaps, but these movies have been regraded with the teal-orange look.

Why not? If what you want is just to remove a color cast then it's just a matter of color balancing. Probably not a good idea as you said, and certainly not a job for madVR anyway.
Well, first, because color grading is a shot by shot process, and sometimes even changes in the same shot. You don't color grade an entire movie (or "uncolor grade" it) with a single LUT or a set of slider, that's just not how it works. It would look good in the scene you take as a reference point and bad in every other one.

Even if you created a system that scans every frame and changes colors "on the fly" (a kind of "dynamic color grading"), the end result would probably be shitty anyway because your picture is not raw "flat" neutral footage, but already color graded. One of the many problems I can think of is that teal & orange color grading often purposely crushes blacks you obviously can't "uncrush" with color balancing : the details are already lost. Maybe a talented colorist could mitigate the teal & orange look by manually recoloring the movie shot by shot, but I don't trust an algorithm to understand what looks good to human eyes. Anyway, if you have an algorithm that can do that, I suggest you call Adobe, they'll buy it for sure :D

Of course, I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but in the meantime, I'll take a carefully graded teal & orange picture over an awkwardly automatically desaturated/recolored one a million times.

This is not true, there are many features in madVR that enhances the image by changing the source material in one way or another. For instance de-ringing, denoise, thin edges, crispen edges, and the list goes on. It doesn't simply display the given data, it manipulates it in different ways.
These features should only be used to restore a picture degraded by several steps of compression. With the exception of denoise/add grain, they don't really mess with the original artistic intent. By contrast, IMO, modifying the movie colors is like giving the director the middle finger.

would switching white balance to a cooler setting negate some of the yellow grading or would that be too course, I noticed this a lot in the 4k interstellar release, I much prefer the 1080p bluray.

I have been testing HDR on the latest build passing thru metadata. HDR mode kicks in perfectly, unfortunatley it gets stuck in HDR mode until I reboot the PC. Is this a known anomaly?

I have the same with FSE, did you use FSE? If so then try fullscreen window mode (FSW).

that why i said try a hard clip 3d LUT.

the bigger meaning behind that was to measure the white point using the same scene and comparing them.

That most likely won't work, because as I said, color grading is a shot by shot process.

Take Interstellar. This page has comparison screenshots between 1080p & 4K releases : https://archimago.blogspot.com/2018/01/1080p-blu-ray-vs-4k-uhd-blu-ray-does.html

You can see that some shots are heavily altered, while some others are not modified at all.

Even if modifying white balance actually worked on the shots that most bother you (and TBH I highly doubt the result would look natural...), every other shot in the movie would probably end up blue-ish or looking unnatural in a way or another.

The Human Touch, ruining our movies.. Damn you colorists, y you need so much teal..

if y'all just bump up color temp to 7000-7500k it should take alot of red/green out of the picture.

For example it works well on the latest Broly Funimation bluray

Best done via 3D lut, otherwise the overall balance will be very odd looking.

The bulk of the problem is most likely the studio upgrading to very different grading monitors . The new sony and dolby hdr sets. There's going to be a rough patch in releases for a while, before they dial it in.

Read one post above yours. This is often done scene-by-scene, and such a broad approach would ruin the scenes that don't have this treatment.

It would not RUIN scenes. You guys are taking this out of proportion.

There is NO RIGHT COLOR. If the colorist graded it more green this time around, well that's that, It looked good to him, he lives and breaths color, his taste and experiences are highly refined in this area, I'll take his word for it.

Now, on our end, +500 +1000k is a good compromise. We are not even that sensitive in the blue range, that small a difference on a scene that's mostly blue won't be perceived that differently.

The bulk of the lard-butts sitting at home complaining about teal when they don't even own a colorimeter. :D

There are 3 possibilites.

The FIRST disc release was wrong

The SECOND disc release was wrong

Neither the First, Nor the Second release was wrong. They're all gud'

What if you've only seen 2 women in your whole life. Which one is uglier.

We ask our colorist pal, hey doug, you've seen 1000s of women, the Green one is good ?, Yes Todd, I think the green one is swell.

Overall, color is a preference, So at-home critiques are valid. However, Whatever comes out of the studio, THAT is among the most informed choices, because the guy doing it is a professional.

Similarly, in machining, back when hss blades were hand sharpened/ grinded, there was always this guy who would angle the relief angles a little differently, because over time, his experience told him to do that.

Same with the colorist who decided m0ar Green.

It would not RUIN scenes. You guys are taking this out of proportion. If you apply a blanket colour temperature correction to a whole movie because you don't like how the colour grading was changed only in some scenes, then yes you potentially would ruin the other scenes. Just take a look at the link posted by Charky, it's a perfect example.
You can't keep mentioning all the time that people need to invest in a colorimeter because calibration is essential etc., and then argue that changing colour temperature for a whole movie wouldn't ruin it, that's completely illogical. :sly:There is NO RIGHT COLOR. If the colorist graded it more green this time around, well that's thatPeople have been trying to explain that this not how it's done. There's no "let's grade this one more green overall". Which is why there's no way to 'correct' it with a single setting change. The bulk of the lard-butts sitting at home complaining about teal when they don't even own a colorimeter. :DYou don't need a colorimeter to be able to spot a difference in colour grading in two different versions of a same scene on the same screen. Even if your calibration is wrong, you still see the image has changed in a certain way.

Charky

It's not just a matter of personal preference, the colors you will end up with if you modify blindly your whole picture with color temp or color balance will mostly always look worse than what you started with.

Just look at skin tones : colorists are aware that a picture won't look natural if skin tones are greenish or redish or blueish. So even a heavily teal & orange LUT has to be tweaked to achieve natural looking skin tones. Every NLE software has a way to do secondary color correction to achieve this.

Any way you look at it, tinkering your whole picture with white balance just to change the global "hue" of the movie, and attempting to "counter" an artistic intent that, even if you don't like it, has been carefully crafted shot by shot, is probably a bad idea and will get you weird results. You might as well put a light blue colored candy wrapper on your projector's lens ;)

You don't need a colorimeter to be able to spot a difference in colour grading in two different versions of a same scene on the same screen. Even if your calibration is wrong, you still see the image has changed in a certain way.
You could even say that even with a dE of 4 or 5 (which is worse than most displays, even out of the box, when they are set with their most accurate preset), teal is still teal :D

I had noticed that in Interstellar but I didn't think it was due to the grading. Anyway I still think that this is more accentuated because of the way in which the color correction is done in ICtCp, and even more so if no gamut mapping is done. What I specifically refer to is this:

Nolan pulled the same stuff for 2001 re-release (http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2018/04/nolans-yellowish-teal-tinted-2001-obviously-sucks/).
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=14974628#post14974628
The trailer is a scan from the new print Nolan had struck from the original negative (pin-registration is a giveaway). This print stock is almost certainly 65mm Kodak 2383, which is the most common print stock and Nolan’s stock of choice for all of his celluloid showings.

Part of Kodak 2383’s characteristics include a warm push in the highlight regions and a blue/teal push to shadow regions. Using a 2383 Look-Up-Table on footage scanned/encoded as Cineon Log shows this effect. The interpositives used for the 4K releases of Nolan’s work, particularly the new copies of Inception and Dunkirk, show this effect clearly.

Also, UHD version is not affected since it's a scan from original camera negative, and not interpositive.
Warner is doing it again for the upcoming Batman releases (see screenshots (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Batman-4K-Blu-ray/230456/))

Again, UHD version is unaffected, it seems like Warner colorist is doing something wrong when converting BT2020 to REC709. Although this been happening for a while now (IIRC remastered blurays of Matrix trilogy and 2001 also have this problem).

There are 3 possibilites.

The FIRST disc release was wrong

The SECOND disc release was wrong

Neither the First, Nor the Second release was wrong. They're all gud'

But we know for a fact that the first release was wrong. UHD discs are far more faithful to the way these movies where intended to be seen.

There are multiple humans in the chain.

There is no REFERENCE color grading.

No one has seen the original, because there isn't one. There IS NO RIGHT COLOR.

For example, a Professional cinema works with a contrast ratio of 500 : 1.

So material sent out to the theater is graded appropriately for that display system.

Your VA tv has 4-6000:1 contrast, Oled ~20,000:1

Whatever they did in the theater is completely inappropriate for discs meant for home display.

NOW, the team behind all of these different final representations (disc, theater, web) may be different, so different Artistic choices are made along the way by different humans..

ONE of these guys might like a little more green or a little more teal, HIS EYES may respond to colors differently than your eyes, It's a living imprecise system.

You get what you get. If your display is 3Dlut calibrated, That's that, you're good to go. TRUST your color grader, he's seen alot of movies, believe that he knows what' he's doing.

This doesn't mean mistakes never happen, but more often than not, it's a stylistic difference.

I was talking about Nolan's UHD collection (or whatever it's called), not about format as a whole. Sure, you have studios cranking up saturation just because they can, but in this case we have something that's has been signed off by Nolan himself

There is no REFERENCE color grading.
Yes, there is. It's called master copy (or interpositive, for analog color grading), which is signed off by director, DP, and chief colorist. This is the version from which all other copy's are being delivered from, until a new master copy is created from OCN. Hence the term "Remaster".

For example, a Professional cinema works with a contrast ratio of 500 : 1.

So material sent out to the theater is graded appropriately for that display system.
No, they're not. If it happen, then all the blacks would appear as solid gray in theaters, not as elevated black. Otherwise trying to stretch contrast ratio from 500:1 to 4000:1 or infinite for Oleds would end up in horrifically crushing blacks.

Sure, Home Video presentation is graded differently than theatrical, but usualy it's not created separately, but by downgrading the latter.

ONE of these guys might like a little more green or a little more teal, HIS EYES may respond to colors differently than your eyes, It's a living imprecise system.

Yes, when you have colorist tasked with creating a new transfer for a movie years letter, without input from original creators, you may end up with alterations to to the look of the movie. Sometimes creators themselves are going back to they earlier works and make revisionistic changes. But in case of Interstellar, Prestige and the rest of the package, their look on UHD makes perfect sense considering how Nolan makes movies.

Hi everyone,

I have installed MadVR (with Potplayer) to watch HDR movies and this is working perfectly.

Now I wanted to take advantage of the upscaling features to watch my 1080p and 720p content on my 4K TV, but this makes my PC crash.
From my tests, the movies encoded in H.265 works most of the time and the results are incredible, but those in H.264 will crash the PC and make it restart as soon as activate the fullscreen mode (so no error dialog box from MadVR).
In the upscaling settings, if I choose something like "Cubic" it will work without problem (though not as sharp) but when I choose something like "super-xbr" or "NGU", that will make my PC crash.

Did I do something wrong, am I missing something ?

My specs:
Windows 10 x64
I7 4790
16 Go RAM
RTX 2080 Ti

Yeah you either have hardware or software instability. I assume that you've gamed on the 2080 yeah? If so that rules out problems with the hardware..
You should look first at uninstalling your graphics drivers with DDU and reinstalling, this isn't a issue with madVR, it's your system that's at fault.
Wouldn't hurt to run a System File Check too if you're still having issues after reinstalling the GPU driver.
Also, wouldn't hurt to reset settings for whatever media player you're using along with madVR, try that first.

The master copy is TO BE REFERENCED, That doesn't mean there is a Reference Color Grading, because everyone sees color differently, and all the equipment at the user end is different from that used to create the master. The entire pipeline is Relative.

The theater copy is graded separately from the home copy. It simply has to be.

Your common movie theaters have 500:1 ansi-contrast, this is a flat fact.

More controlled environments may peak 800 to 1000:1. You can not use the same color grading from theater to TV.

Even if both copies are graded with the same artistic intent, they are represent very different brush strokes.

That's why most grading studios have a projector and a separate grading monitor.

He might have run into some issues with the Envy. Can't expect everything to go smoothly on a completely new piece of hardware with complex software. I would doubt that he isn't working on something related to this project. You just don't always get hear about it on these forums.

I should say that status updates on what is being worked on would help. I keep seeing the same faces here and especially at AVS Forum that really want to see a completed or near completed version of the tone mapping. They are already sold on using it over any other solution for HDR content on their projectors and don't have any idea when it might be finished. That includes many potential Envy customers who are currently on PC. The other issues mentioned...probably on the backburner until then.

I should say that status updates on what is being worked on would help.
But there are status updates. Development is active, test builds are released and work great, and he's working with the help of people from AVS (especially Neo-XP) on tweaking the dynamic tone mapping algorithm to get right movie scenes with sudden brightness changes like lightning flashes. And I believe next step is to implement some kind of buffering system to analyze a few incoming frames (he calls it "looking ahead") to enhance his DTM algorithm even more.

Exactly. Only those can truly understand this who ever work(ed) on any software for the masses (free/opensource projects) for a longer period of time. The continuous and never ending problem solving - that not necessarily related to bugs in the software itself -, the long lasting support, the unstoppable moaning ... These definitely won't help to maintain interest. Not to mention real life that becomes more-and-more important in time.
If you ask bunch of devs whether they work on any free software, loads of them would say "screw that!" :)
He is "just" one guy and the project(s) got enormous ...

That is true. But there are a lot of time gaps in communication and no clear indication on timeframes. Taking some time to answer unrelated questions would remove the frustration of those who post them.

I also agree that there is no reason to complain when builds are available for those that must have them. It does seem like madshi took on too much work for one person and needs to catch up. Burn out is possible and doesn't necessitate taking on even more work.

Few of us are doing a very good job keeping this thread clean for MADSHI, 99% of the conversations on here should have been on the GENERAL thread which MADSHI need not read, there is too much spam on here now, if we dont keep it clean it will just make the thread more and more daunting for MADSHI to revisit and catch up on regularly.

Hi,

I did everything you mentionned: remove the drivers with DDU, install them back, reset PotPlayer and MadVR settings, I did a system file check which found and fix a problem.
As @tp4tissue asked, I also did a 15mn GPU test with Furmark without problem.

But as soon as I put back the setting I use in MadVR, this made my PC crash when I went into fullscreen with H.264 files.

I did more tests, and pinpointed the settings that make my PC crash :

In the MadVR settings, when super-xdr or NGU are activated in the chrome and image upscaling, if both "sharpen edges" and "thin edges" are activated at the same time in the upscaling refinement, then this will make my PC crash when entering fullscreen using H.264 files (that usually works fine with H.265 files).

So for the moment if I only activate "sharpen edges" or "thin edges" (not both at the same time), then that works.

Are those settings incompatible ?

Hello!

I'm responding again for the second time but more prepared as i have managed to make MPC HC work with madVR and LAV filters. Now my issue is that the image somewhat looks like it has a "greenish" tint to it with madVR HDR. When watching with VLC HDR it looks proper coloration. No tints at all.
I have enabled madVR with the hardware accelleration and followed all the instructions to properly set the madVR for HDR reproduction. Everyone announces and says that madVR is definitive version to go but if it is then why does it look worse (color reproduction faulty with a green tint) compared to VLC 3.0.6 HDR?
HDR has been enabled in windows and there is literally almost no difference between the two beside this feint greenish tint to it when watching with MadVR.

Am I doing something wrong here? Did i not set MadVR correctly? This is happening across all the players i tried with MadVR. Bellow you will find links to 2 images for madVR and the same shots with VLC, please if you can assist me here it would be very helpful for me as i do want to use the definitive player for HDR reproduction.

I'm not a color psychopath but TBH the difference is barely noticeable (and close to not at all for the second screenshot) even when you look at the screenshots side by side or switch between them back and forth.

At this point it's not even possible to tell which one is supposed to be the right one. For all we know, madvr could be more faithful to the original source and VLC give the movie a blueish tint.

The frustration is somewhat valid. But remember that madshi is nothing if not ambitious. Tackling the HDR tone mapping was a HUGE undertaking and he's got some REALLY amazing dedicated people working on it to help him. I think the scope of that project was far bigger than anyone could imagine. Then throw out the Envy work being done and remember that NONE OF THIS is madshi's day job. It was his intention last November to have a new release out within a couple weeks with improved tone mapping, but, they kept finding issues that have take a lot of work to iron out. Also, I don't believe they are anywhere near "done" on the HDR side of things. madshi has talked about when this phase is complete what comes next with things like being able to look several frames ahead and other improvements. That does sort of leave the rest of the product stuck until that work is finished. So yes, I get the frustration. I also appreciate the insane work he's been doing and I know you guys get that. Good things will come in time.

There is way too many variables to answer such a question. The green-tinted version may even be the correct one. Or there is a configuration mistake, which we can't even begin to guess at.

There is way too many variables to answer such a question. The green-tinted version may even be the correct one. Or there is a configuration mistake, which we can't even begin to guess at.

It happens on all movies and when played directly from TV via USB it doesn't have that green tint. It looks identical to VLC 3.0.6 actually. So i'm honestly confused here. I did not modify any settings in madVR or the player itself. It is a fresh install of madVR and the player itself that's why i'm asking. Is there some option that i have to flip on to get the correct tone map for HDR?

I'm not a color psychopath but TBH the difference is barely noticeable (and close to not at all for the second screenshot) even when you look at the screenshots side by side or switch between them back and forth.

Well If you take a look it's very easily discernable. Look at stalones hair. It looks greenish while on the VLC it looks black. Look how white is altering to feint green. It definitely is not natural.
It may not even be the issue with the madVR itself but the way the player itself is converting the colors that's why i'm writing here to see if i have to change something as i am running fresh player install with madVR.
You should always second guess if you are not unsure. Don't blindly trust because it says "MadVR". :)

Definitely it is you because the colors do not look more natural but less natural as we don't see the world through a greenish tint, unless you are wearing sunglasses with greenish tint then it's alright.

Thank you guys for answering and will post my findings from the links provided! If you know more about this issue please reply!

Hi, is there any way I can read the settings.bin file in plain text? I got a new computer and want to transfer some of my old madVR settings, but I'm reluctant to just transfer the settings.bin file because I have also changed some hardware (e.g., my monitor and GPU). I'm afraid copying the settings.bin file from an old system will cause problems.

With other programs it hasn't been a huge deal. Most programs backup their settings in plain text of some sort, so I can just fire up Notepad++ and use the "compare" plugin to see which settings I want to transfer over. But madVR's settings.bin comes out as gibberish in Notepad++.

huhn
6th June 2019, 01:42
the settings bin doesn't store settings about your hardware and even if something should go wrong it is nothing that can't be fixed by simply removing it.

@dzonibegood
don't use the windows 10 HDR feature it does what ever it wants to the image and worse to SDR too.

a claim about a green tint is meaningless without proper calibrated hardware and even harder with the TVs tone mapping which yet again does what ever it wants with the image.
