I am afraid not. I never tried to simulate channel switches with Files...
Oh well. My brother has a Dreambox connected to SAT, which I can access via LAN. Is there any way I can make DVBViewer treat the Dreambox as a Sat receiver? Maybe that would allow me to reproduce the problem?

Oups, I actually didn't send the one I wanted to send.

This is the one that really is causing issues. De-activating and re-activating auto-crop doesn't help with this one.

Euh, those ugly subtitles! I'll have a look at this, but my best guess is that the subtitles are to monstruous for the current madVR detection code. I expect there to be some black pixels somewhere in between those subtitle letters in each pixel line. Otherwise to madVR it looks like real image content and not subtitles. But I'll see what I can do...

Probably using XySubFilter would work around the issue.
Does it allow to show/hide subtitles with keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys)?

Hmmm... Try enabling "linear light" for "image downscaling". Does that fix the problem?
Yes

I can't think of something useful with the Dreambox either, as long as E2 devices do not feature a SAT>IP server. I am currently trying to reproduce it with two recordings of the channels and a playlist...

Strange, again, I'm using DXVA copyback, and player crashes with NNedi3.

Regarding cropping black bars: is there any settings (if not can you add one) for configuring not to crop black bars IF black bars are less than 2-4-6-8-10-..-15 lines? :) (I just realised yesterday night with a bluray remux, that it cropped 1 pixel from the side, resulting 1919 wide picture :) )
Thanks

Do you get a crash box looking similar to this? http://madshi.net/exc-ss3.gif
If so, please press "show bug report", then Ctrl+C, then you'll find the crash report in your clipboard. Upload it somewhere for me to look at.

1. Yes, I do have, here's the log, thanks: http://pastebin.com/YCsxfMDv

2. about my 2nd question: I made some test and everything seems to be good with these madvr settings under zoom control:
- x disable scaling if image size changes by only: 25 lines or less
- x automatically detect hard coded black bars
- x if black bars change pick one zoom factor: which doesn't lose any image content
- x notify media player about cropped black bars: no more than once every 2 sec
- x keep bars visible if they contain subtitles: forever
- x crop black bars

That means, I don't need any further option about this :) And the top setting solves the problem with some strange fullHD videos that aren't fullHD (scaling wise, and MPC-HC doesn't scale it either!)! Awesome! :) Thank You!

3. 1 more thing popped in my mind about cropped black bars and profiling by size :) : will this work/detect screen changes on the fly? :)
Thank you once more!

Ha! I succeeded! Easily reproducible here... Exactly same symptoms as with live channel switching.

Add the following two files (10s each) to a DVBViewer playlist, then play it.

Sky Atlantic HD (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zkkmwhmvm2h85ht/2015-09-22_20-53-06_Sky%20Atlantic%20HD%20%28deu%29_Boardwalk%20Empire%20-%20Elfenbeinturm.ts?dl=1)
Sky Comedy (https://www.dropbox.com/s/y2r70p2ridbwjwj/2015-09-22_20-52-46_Sky%20Comedy%20%28AC3%2Cdeu%29_Im%20wei%C3%9Fen%20R%C3%B6ssl%20-%20Wehe%20du%20singst%21%20-%20Kom%C3%B6die.ts?dl=1)

The files will alternately be played back.

As I said it requires FSE here. When video freezes, the problem will persist until you kick madVR out of FSE via CTRL+ALT+DEL. So the duration of the single files should not matter. You will hear that the files are still alternately being played back when video hangs, as audio still works.

The right default setting should be the one which applies to the majority of content rendered through madVR. So was the majority of content downscaled in gamma light at some point? Or was it not? I find it hard to say, but I suppose that probably 99% of all DVDs were downscaled in gamma light. For Blu-Ray it's more difficult. For older movies which got a 4K scan it's probably gamma light. For newer movies which have a 2K DI it might depend on at which resolution the film was scanned, or which resolution the digical camera recorded in. So it's really difficult to tell... Maybe a good default setting would be to use gamma light for SD content and linear light for 4K content? Not sure about Blu-Ray, though...

Well even if it was downscaled in gamma light at some point, using SuperRes with linear light isn't incorrect; it'll just look like an upscaled version of the image. It might deviate from the original a bit, but that's because the downscaled version deviates from the original (because of the 'incorrect' downscaling).

Good news Madshi !!! :)
I was affected by the black screen & freeze at launch with nnedi3 activated and I have found the solution to make it work (1st time for me :))!!!
I was using the internal LAV filters of MPCHC and by uncheking all the internal filters and using the last Lav Filters 0.66 as external filters ..... everything work again !!! :)

Hope it will help the other people concerned...

What do you need that for?In short:
My TV has to be in Game Mode or Graphics Mode when on the desktop. (full chroma res, low latency, but less accurate picture)
It has to be in Movie Mode when watching full-screen videos. (more accurate picture, though it drops chroma res to 4:2:2 and latency increases by ~100ms)

I don't know how or where it is specified, but the picture mode does change on the TV if it's set to auto.
On the desktop, it uses Graphics Mode, when I launch a game it enters Game Mode, if I play a video in WMP it enters General Mode.
You can manually change the Content Type in the NVIDIA Control Panel, and Movie Mode/Photo Mode also work; though I've not seen it switch to them automatically.

With JRiver using madVR though, I get:
Windowed Mode: Graphics Mode
FSW Mode: Game Mode
FSE Mode: Graphics Mode
With HDMI-CEC control (https://www.pulse-eight.com/) to switch the TV off/on when Windows sleeps/wakes the display, the only thing I use the TV remote for now is to switch modes.
If madVR could control the Content Type reported to the TV (I've no idea if this is possible) then it could switch the TV into Movie Mode when entering FSE playback and I'd never need the TV remote again.

What color does the pillarboxing have? This sounds extremely weird. Do you have a screenshot? It's not one color, there are images in place of blank pillarboxing.
Imagine something like this:
http://abload.de/img/aspectipq10.jpg

Or sometimes they repeat the edges of the video in the pillarbox with a gaussian blur over them, which I find very distracting. This was the first example I found on YouTube (03:50) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qdL3FwqbZk#t=3m50s)

It is unfortunately common for videos which are, for example, commentary over 4:3 footage.
It's not something that I think madVR should be detecting and isn't, but something which could also make use of the crop and aspect ratio features via file tags.

Oh well. Not sure what to do now.I think it could be a useful sub-option, if you add "only clean-up cropped edges".
Instead of a toggle, perhaps that would have to be a drop-down for "clean only affected edges" (which could be 1-4 edges) and "clean edge pairs" (top & bottom, left & right).

I understand the desire to simplify the controls, but I don't think the Zoom Control options are complex, just numerous - and I think it needs that flexibility to suit everyone's preferences, or all types of content.

Hummm I have been too fast.... CUVID is the real problem that create the freeze and black screen.... using DVXA copy back in LAV fix the problem....and create it when I revert to CUVID...
(Once you change cuvid to dvxa cb it is important to kill the 2 madvr & mpchc apps open in the task manager or it will not work)

When you rename the files, you don't need to run the batch, anymore! The batch tries to rename the files, nothing else. So if you renamed the files manually, you've already done what the batch file was supposed to do. By manually renaming the files you've already activated debug mode, and you should get a debug log on your desktop.

Okay I finally understand now. Here's the log : http://www.mediafire.com/download/09l7qctofcj4ejd/madVR+NNEDI3-+log.txt . Thanks for being so patient.

Ha! I succeeded! Easily reproducible here... Exactly same symptoms as with live channel switching.

Add the following two files (10s each) to a DVBViewer playlist, then play it.

As I said it requires FSE here. When video freezes, the problem will persist until you kick madVR out of FSE via CTRL+ALT+DEL. So the duration of the single files should not matter. You will hear that the files are still alternately being played back when video hangs, as audio still works.
Wonderful - thanks - I can reproduce problems here! Will look at it tomorrow...

1. Yes, I do have, here's the log, thanks: http://pastebin.com/YCsxfMDv
Interesting. Might have to do a test build for that, but not today, anymore.

3. 1 more thing popped in my mind about cropped black bars and profiling by size :) : will this work/detect screen changes on the fly? :)
Yes, it should.

Well even if it was downscaled in gamma light at some point, using SuperRes with linear light isn't incorrect; it'll just look like an upscaled version of the image. It might deviate from the original a bit, but that's because the downscaled version deviates from the original (because of the 'incorrect' downscaling).
Yeah, but I want to get as near as possible to the original image... :)

It might be able to change that via NVidia specific APIs. But that's ultra low priority for me atm.

It's not one color, there are images in place of blank pillarboxing.

Or sometimes they repeat the edges of the video in the pillarbox with a gaussian blur over them, which I find very distracting.

It is unfortunately common for videos which are, for example, commentary over 4:3 footage.
It's not something that I think madVR should be detecting and isn't, but something which could also make use of the crop and aspect ratio features via file tags.
Ok.

Hummm I have been too fast.... CUVID is the real problem that create the freeze and black screen.... using DVXA copy back in LAV fix the problem....and create it when I revert to CUVID...
(Once you change cuvid to dvxa cb it is important to kill the 2 madvr & mpchc apps open in the task manager or it will not work)
Ok, I'll check if I can reproduce the problem here when using CUVID.

Does it allow to show/hide subtitles with keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys)?
I'm not sure.

Yes
Well, in that case I hope you can live with keeping that option enabled. Currently I can't fix this easily because it's not really a bug, but a side effect of a performance optimization. It will have to wait until I revisit the whole screenshot stuff.

I'm not aware of a single TV or projector which supports 120Hz input, but I'm sure some models will support it. It's very rare, though. HDMI in theory also supports 111Hz or 88Hz. Bandwidth issues aside, the key problem is what the firmware of the TV/projector supports. And most manufacturers don't bother implementing support for 120Hz. And why should they? It would cost them development resources which 99.99% of all users wouldn't ever use. Furthermore, with a 120Hz input they would probably have to extend the firmware to automatically disable all sorts of algorithms, like their own black frame insertion, motion interpolation etc. So I understand that they don't bother supporting high refresh rate input.

The situation may change if some important future gaming console is fast enough for 120Hz rendering. Or if UHD at some point supports 120Hz content.

Actually, new Sony TVs support 120hz ;)

Oops sorry, error message seemed identical so I wasn't sure whether a new log would help :o

Log files sent for 89.3b & 89.3e to your email.

Why would you need that? madVR already detects the black bars automatically. So you don't have to do anything manually.
These days I mostly use it for VHS captures that come with mistracking rolling bars at the bottom, I just get them out of the active picture and I would thoroughly enjoy a filename tag in order to nail them once and for all if any possible please.

I've also used it to rescan 15/9 to 16/9, I'm done in 5 clicks when it already takes 5 clicks to open mVR's control panel and reach the black bars section.

If you're under win 10 cuvid is no longer supported by nvidia drivers, so if you select it in lav you'll get that freeze. It's a pity because is the only thing that can access HW deinterlacing in lav, problem is that HW deinterlacing in Madvr with DVXA CB in video mode (at least in my case) doesn't work either (no doubling whatsoever, it always halves the frames and SVP doubles them again so I have to stick with yadiff...)

SVP takes the frames from the decoder not the renderer so SVP only gets the interlaced stream.

and nvdia is using "double" FPS deinterlacing by default. the input for madVR is still 29.97 that's just how deinterlacing works 60 field in 29.97 frames.

Thats nonsense, CUVID on Windows 10 works perfectly fine.

For some reason it just causes issues with madVRs image doubling. Maybe CUVID/CUDA in D3D9 mode doesn't like having OCL in D3D11 mode at the same time or something.

Maybe you could suggest adding hotkeys in the XySubFilter thread? Although development has been idle recently, sadly...

I can see, maybe I can rerender the frame in paused mode once every second or so? That should solve the subtitle problem without burning the GPU too much, I suppose.

It's not really a problem, just wondering since compression works by far best on text files like that.

So, I had a quick look at your debug log, but I'm not totally sure what to look for. I can see that it contains about 30 seconds of runtime. So which was the problem exactly which you captured in this debug log?

Ah ok, that makes more sense to me. The screenshot you showed using PotPlayer's pan&scan looked like it should be auto detected by madVR, so the screenshot didn't really explain well why you would want to crop via file name tag.

Ouch. Then the problem you have must be a different problem to the one I saw here. Can you upload your madVR "settings.bin" (if madVR has write access to its own folder on your PC, otherwise "HKCU\Software\madshi\madVR\Settings", so that I can try with the same madVR settings? Also are you using any special LAV Video Decoder settings? You said earlier it occurs with both software and native DXVA decoding, so that doesn't seem to play much of a role here. Is there any way to copy the DVBViewer settings? Which GPU are you using, which display resolution and refresh rate? And which OS? Maybe if I try to match my playback as much as possible to yours, hopefully I can reproduce the same issue then...

@madshi

since I am ill at home, I took the oportunity to think a bit about how you could better be prepared for Live TV matters. I know we talked about it on the DVBViewer forums but I would like to give it another shot ;) .

Therefore I also tried out several things...

(1) Dreambox
As it turned, you can easily use any E2 STB as network frontend for the DVBViewer. I tried that out with my UNiBOX HD eco+ and OpenATV image. You will find a comprehensive tutorial here (http://board.dreambox-tools.info/showthread.php?7700-Tutorial-DVBViewer-Client-mit-Zugriff-auf-die-Dreambox-als-Tuner), which should apply to all E2 STBs.

There is one catch which cost me a bit of time. Zapping via the URL is only possible when the STB is in Standby (not Deep Standby of course). Otherwise the STB is the master and does not allow external sources to change the channel/stream.

This really works beautifully.

(2) USB-Tuner
I did an inventory and I have quite a lot of prototype DVB hardware, see attached image.

They are all DVB-S2 USB2 devices. I tested their proper functionality right now. They have been in the closet for several years and are just catching dust. I would be more than happy to give something back and send you one for free.

Or if you prefer PCIe, I also have 2 Tevii S470 (http://www.tevii.com/Products_S472_1.asp) and an S482 (http://www.tevii.com/Products_S482_1.asp).

How about making it optional (with rerendering being disabled by default, of course)? It's an ideal solution but the only and big downside is an additional option itself, which may contribute to options being overfilled (too much options). But I think it's better than rerendering paused mode for all, which most people will not need, and for ones who need every second may be too long, so it's a bad solution for both. The decision to make is up to you

CUVID + NNEDI freezes the player. that doesn't mean it isn't supported anymore and that doesn't mean it will always freeze.
CUVID on it own should work totally fine.

That's why SVP with HW deinterlacing behaves correctly...

if SVP tries to interpolated a interlaced flagged stream than this is a problem/limitation in SVP.

if you want to use SVP on a 60 fps deinerlaced stream to get 120 FPS or something like that than yes this is not possible with hardware deinterlacing. by using YADIF or hardware deinterlacing you lose the ability to use madVR IVTC not sure if this a good idea.

WIN10+LAV CUVID freezes MPCHC no matter the upscaler. Do you own an NVIDIA card under WIN10 and are you able to select LAV CUVID without issues? Please let me know if you do. If yes than something's wrong with my setup...

The problem is that by using HW decoding (and HW deintelacing) via LAV-CUVID everything worked fine (in WIN8), since HW deintelacing is the best thing until Madshi comes up with something new (and I read in SVP forums he has some brilliant ideas) I'm stuck with YADIF and I don't see other options (as I said MADVR deintelacing doesn't detect video mode - at least in my case - and messes up with SVP...) ;)

disable SVP in this case and you are fine. DXVA uses the same deinterlacer. and it is clearly doing 60p i can clearly count the 3:2 frame count in 3:2 cadence interlaced streams.

and i found issues with all hardware deinterlacer so even very basic QTGMC should be way better and at least i never saw an issue with YADIF.

Thanks @huhn, I will try EVR-CP to see if MadVR is the cause or maybe SVP's. As a matter of fact I tried to disable it but maybe it's not enough, maybe it is related to SVP's OPENCL, I don't know, but the exact same elements in WIN8 and LAV CUVID worked totally fine. Can you please test it with MadVR instead of EVR?

Disabling SVP each time I watch 1080@60i is not practical besides MadVR seems to force film mode so the only solution is YADIF. Unfortunately DXVA in LAV filters is not able to trigger HW deinterlacing. In the near future maybe Madshi will be able to implement an high quality vector based deinterlacer using SVP's data ;)

I get madVR to deinterlace just fine as well. Admittedly my interlaced content is quite minimal, only a few concerts and documentaries from Blu-rays, but they work just fine with Software Decoding or DXVA2-CB and madVR DXVA deinterlacing.
There doesn't seem to be much of a point to run SVP on content thats natively 60 fps already, so some sort of profile system in ffdshow (which is still used for SVP, i guess?) could be used to limit its use there.

Sorry I missed that line. No I don't use that algo for chroma upscaling. At this point I think it has something to do with SVP or FFdshow raw filter... I will uninstall those and run some tests. If someone here is an SVP user can please confirm they have no trouble with LAV cuvid?

No I did not, whatever the settings SVP always sees the deinterlaced video as either 25 or 30p and thus doubles it...As I said this thing did not happen using LAV cuvid and HW deintelacing in video mode, SVP was not triggered because it was reading a video already running at 50p or at 60p...

Can you please download the latest LAV build with the latest LAV PDB debug symbols, then reproduce the problem, then press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Pause/Break to create a freeze report in madVR. Also add a debug log, if you can. Hopefully that might help me figuring out what's going on there. The freeze report is probably more important in this case, but having a debug log on top could also prove helpful.

do i just need to put the LAV PDB debug symbols in the same folder as lavfilter?

That's too bad. I thought it could go into "trade quality for performance" subcategory just fine

It's a compromise meaning everyone will lose something: ones will get their GPU used more, others will get a delay
An alternative would be for the internal subtitle renderer to notify madVR that the current frame needs to be redrawn. That would require work from MPC-HC/-BE devs, as well, though.

Could it be that NNEDI3 chroma doubling after luma doubling is broken?
Looking at your images, it seems that way. However, on my PC it seems to work. So it might be specific to your madVR settings and the exact scaling factor or something. Can you upload your settings.bin (or HKCU\software\madshi\madVR\settings)?

Yes. They must match *exactly* the LAV version, though, otherwise they do more harm than good.

Ah, yes. It seems like a bug in conjunction with upscaling refinement after each 2x upscaling step.

you get your freeze report and logs soon. it takes a min or 2 after closing the player until i get an freeze report on my desktop so i have a "couple" more on my desktop now.

will do it cleanly now.
