I've been using 113 a very long time with no problems and there is no timeout. I have no reason to use more advanced tone mapping since I passthrough and don't mind using this reliable build since it meets all of my requirements.

- "vsync on" necessary
- stuttering
- presentation glitches
- HDR colours working only in full screen mode
- max performance mode necessary (Nvidia)
- Which was the last Windows 10 version (service pack etc.) with the least issues?
- Which was the last Nvidia graphics driver with the least issues?
- Which was the last Nvidia card (10xx or 20xx) with the least issues? The card should support 4k 60Hz 10bit and preferably be passive cooled if available.

Why? He said isolated dedicated machine. 8.1 is faster than 7 and everything in madvr is supported like fullscreen exclusive and nvidia does have drivers for it.
He made that recommendation back when 10 was still new, true, but in the years since, madvr hasn't been updated to keep up with the changes in 10, so..
In a similar vein, flossy still is/was until very recently still using 7.

Can't answer everything here:
I run a passive ASUS GT 1030 GDDR5 (this is the the last passively cooled NVIDIA to my knowledge). I was looking forward to a passive 1600 series card, but one hasn't surfaced. I'm on Windows 10. No issues version to version. I don't play any HDR stuff, only DVDs, blu-rays. You should follow the reddit threads for official driver releases. The current recommended driver by the community there is 551.86. Would you consider MPC Video Renderer? I haven't moved to it yet, but since getting a 120 hz monitor, I don't need Smooth Motion anymore. The algorithms in MPC Video Renderer are getting there too.

About the gamma, on Linux I mostly use vlc because I can't be bothered right now to hand-construct a config file for mpv. People here rap it, but it actually does have stuff under the hood. If you look in the advanced settings>video>output modules>opengl you will see that there are 9 different display primaries that can be selected, and also 9 different display gamma/transfer functions. On the same tab, 6 different tone-mapping algorithms (presumably for HDR). I cannot speak to the quality of implementation, I am just saying that there is stuff present. If using opengl however, the scaling algo is whatever the card's hardware uses.. There is a software scaler in filters with 10 choices, but it only works if you're using a non-hardware accelerated renderer. If you want gamma/primaries, you have to give up the scaler choice.
Anyway, about the gamma, on my monitor with that, I've set BT.709 for the display and IEC 61966-2-4 for the transfer function. I did try BT.1886 but it was too bright, in part because due to my screen not being calibrated I use mac gamma (likely 1.8) in the panel.. so using 2-4 with the panel's setting balances out better than using BT.1886 with either setting (too dark or too bright). You have to try them all to see.
I don't use vlc on Windows but for some of you with HDR displays it might be worth experimenting with to see what happens with the tone-mapping choices, if you do, output module choice will have to be changed away from automatic which will default to direct3d which doesn't have those options.

I am in the process of doing a HTPC build with a i5-12600, RTX3060, and Win10Pro 22H2 (with this (https://github.com/memstechtips/UnattendedWinstall) IoT LTSC-like autounattend.xml debloat).
I will let you know how it goes when I have everything configured to perfection and confirmed flawless playback with all rates 23/24/25/29/30/50/59/60 which could take another week or two, but I think it's gonna be okay based on what I'm seeing so far.
I am extremely sensitive to noise as well and use these floating rubber grommet 5.25" bay mounts for my drives (they are the only type I trust to truly silence 3.5" drives) and fans must be inaudible although I think on a warm day even the Noctua CPU fan are going to create some standing waves / humming that may be audible at certain seating positions so you can't fully escape it on a warm day although I went with Noctua D15S for the 140mm fan and bigger heatsink so that one may actually be fine on a warm day, yet to be tested. For GPU fans check the dB measurements at techpowerup, the best ones for quietness are 3 fans, and some of the 2 fan ones like Asus Dual are very quiet too like the Asus Dual 4060.
In a similar vein, flossy still is/was until very recently still using 7.
Yep I still have the Windows 7 machine in the lounge room for main HTPC duties while I work slowly and steadily on this new Windows 10 build. I'm taking it slow cause I wanna make sure I get everything right and taking an image with Clonezilla between major software installs. My latest progress was that I seem to have successfully blocked Windows updates via URL blocking of Microsoft's update servers at my router, combined with a bunch of Group Policy and Registry tweaks (the Windows Update settings GUI now says auto updates are being controlled by your organisation which I believe is the group policy which I set, plus I have tried to force it to update and it just keeps doing the spinner animation and no internet traffic on task manager which I think confirms my router level blocking is working). Idling at desktop I have 67 processes I think that's pretty decent for Windows 10 my mum's computer has 180 processes :scared:

I don't do anything fancy... and I have a lot of stuff running on my PC at all times, and I only have 86 processes running on my Windows 10 right now. I am sure if I turned everything off it would be much lower.

There is a counter in the performance tab > CPU > Processes
And my Windows 7 machine only has 37!
But Windows 10 maybe "feels" slightly faster to load stuff, but I think it's mostly fake trickery of preloading commonly used apps and stuff. Either that or it's the 80MB/sec 4k randoms of the NVMe vs the 45MB/sec of the SATA on the Win7 machine.

It is trickery.. it still has to load/start the services same as 7.. the difference is that the older OSes tended to do that upfront and the later ones let you log in while the startup process was still continuing.. you can see this with the task manager, the CPU and disk load is active for a bit as processes and services continue to get started even though you're sitting at the desktop. But yeah, it's heavy.. I have 175 processes running compared to something like 50 on the 7 partition.
I know what you mean by the fans. After 9+ years the little blower is definitely noisy on load.. need to replace it sometime.. laptop style blower fans are harder to replace because of their more custom configuration/size. You can't just order a "standard" size.

Hmm well I made the administrator account without a password so it just goes straight to desktop without login screen.
Plus, I disabled fast startup so every power on really is a full cold boot not the pseudo hibernation thing it normally does.
And I still think it's smart caching regularly used apps more than win7 does.

Yeah Windows 10 is definitely smarter... even a browser left open with a lot of tabs will power down the processes and not really be doing anything after a few minutes.

Thankfully the vast majority of Processes running in Windows, are idle and consume no CPU time until you do something that requires them. So no reason to stop them.

Well I sit and watch the list of processes sorted by CPU usage on a 180 process machine and see processes coming to the top every now and then to do things occasionally. Idle CPU is definitely not staying pegged solid at <1% like I am used to. Spikes up to maybe 5% every now and then, more when doing regular auto updates for Chromium-based browsers or Windows Security or who knows what "service host" is doing. Not that this would necessarily cause bad performance, the scheduler is a lot better with putting background tasks on e-cores, and I think it's probably better at recognising when user is doing "multimedia" like video or games, compared to Windows 7.

An incompatibility with madVR and MPC-BE when dealing with Matroska files with multiple video tracks has been noticed, which oddly does not happen with MPC-HC.
Not sure if this has been discussed here, or whose fault is it, but if it's not MPC-BE's, madVR needs to address this bug...

Nothing to do with madVR, madVR is a renderer. Handling of multiple video tracks is an issue with the player and the source filter. If it's working with HC, you have your answer as to the renderer.

I am planning on building a new pc mainly for HTPC/downloaded video files playback (no gaming) & in the coming major sale in my region I am likely to get 3060 12GB & RX7600 & maybe 3060Ti at around same price. PC will be connected to a 1080p SDR TV & a 4k HDR TV (in near future) & content will be mostly 1080p sdr or 4k hdr which I am planning on playing to their respective screens (1080p sdr on 1080p sdr tv & 4k hdr on 4k hdr tv) to keep complications to minimum. I will use madvr last stable/permanent version on win 10 22H2 & some other alternatives like mpc-vr if I find it good enough. What is the best option for me in terms of cards then considering all the above factors? I will not have any colorimeter so whatever the TVs allow me to change via its colour/contrast/similar settings will be what I will use for colour correction.

Because you said you won't be using the beta versions of madvr that means the most demanding scenario is that you would be having madvr do BT.2390 tonemapping of a 4k60 HDR video file and that can be done in around 5 milliseconds per frame on a 3060 so either a 3060 or 4060 would be fine for your needs.
But if you want to do more advanced HDR tonemapping than BT.2390 which only the beta versions of madvr can do, then you would need something more powerful.
Personally I don't watch 4k60 HDR apart from gawking at the demo clips, the most I would watch is 4k24 HDR movie, and for that my 3060 is overkill and ideally I would like to be able to use Intel iGPU for future HTPC builds but it seems iGPU is just too pissweak for madvr, it can barely even do anything at all, like the UHD730 GPU in a 12100 cannot even do anything more than bilinear scaling in madvr. I don't know if that's a madvr optimisation issue or if UHD730 is just very slow, but according to benchmarks even my ancient Radeon 6770 from 2011 is much faster than a UHD730 from 2021 so it's kind of annoying that you have to spend all this money on a 4060 just to get baseline performance for a HTPC. It used to be that there were more lower end cards to choose from that made more financial sense for a HTPC-only build.

Yeah madvr's tonemapping is for converting HDR to SDR which I figured you may want to do on your SDR display that you mentioned. Apparently some people also use it to make improvements to their their HDR display's internal HDR tonemapping like for some TVs that have a buggered up HDR mode.

My AMD GPUs are all old so my comments on them wouldn't be relevant. I did have some issues with driver crashes and switching to the stable "enterprise" driver version resolved that, but I would bet that's probably not an issue anymore. Maybe someone else can comment.

To make my system load a little lighter on this broadwell, I outsource the image scaling to the monitor (I don't see the soft scaling it does as a disadvantage, it works for both anime and old grainy material), and that's certainly an option (I used to do image scaling on the igpu too). Handle chroma and dithering choice on the PC side, and let the panel scale the image. If you're using a 4K screen, they're probably pretty ok at scaling by now after all this time no?
You don't need a top of the line nvidia. A few well-chosen choices and you're fine.
For chroma I use Mitchell-Netravali with anti-ringing.
Image downscaling: Mitchell-Netravali, scale linear light, activate relaxed anti-ringing
Image upscaling: Mitchell-Netravali, scale in sigmoidal light, activate anti-ringing
Dithering: Ordered dithering, use colored noise off, change dither for every frame off
Calibration set to match my display, color & gamma enabled also matched.
Display modes on to switch to the resolution and refresh I want.. this way madvr is only doing chroma scaling not luma, the panel handles the luma upscaling.
Letting the panel do the luma also means if you don't like Mitchell you can use some other algo that is more computationally intensive with no big deal of it.
I do sometimes upscale luma using software instead when I don't want the refresh rate changed because sometimes that is tied to a resolution change and when the old source material is something like 640x480 or 720x480.
I can use these settings because I don't have a single thing that is 4K or HDR so I just don't need tonemapping or any of the other stuff.

I'm not a scaling snob, even on the main HTPC I'm totally fine with Lanczos scaling. Even without antiringing I would be willing to accept it if it meant saving $400 on having to buy a standalone GPU.
The UHD 730 in the i3-12100 that I used for my parents computer couldn't handle anything more than bilinear scaling for a 1080p60 video. Lanczos was too much for it, as was bicubic and Mitchell-Netravali. Anything more than bilinear and the render times would be too high, extreme fps stutter and GPU load in the 90% range according to task manager. I couldn't believe it when I saw it but that's all the UHD 730 could manage.
I'm still skeptical the UHD 730 is that weak and leaning towards thinking madVR's shaders just aren't optimised for iGPUs, or maybe the other way round and iGPU's drivers don't know how to optimise the execution of madVR shaders.
I do rely on the AdaptiveSharpen shader for softer DVD content and that just blows the render time out even more, but since the resolution and fps of DVD is lower it creates enough GPU headroom for bilinear + AdaptiveSharpen.
I don't have that PC with me anymore but from memory it could handle 1080p60 with Lanczos scaling with the MPC video renderer, so I think it's more of an optimisation issue with the madvr shader and iGPU combination.

I downloaded a 13-second clip of big buck bunny 8-bit 1080p60 to test. Using copy-back, with chroma-only scaling the CPU load was about 45% and according to gpu-z the GPU load was 42% on a dual-core cpu/iGPU hd 6000. Changing it to do image scaling as well from 1080 to 1152, GPU load went to 100% (not good, but playable). Using overlay which has more cpu.. changing it to windowed was 40% cpu and 38% gpu. Changing it to dxva2-native could not display. Changing it to D3D11 decoding and also for presentation using chroma-only scaling, 25% cpu and gpu load 45%. With image scaling too, 25% cpu, 92% gpu but many dropped frames.
So, on a 9 years old dual-core cpu using bicubic, you can do 25% cpu and 45% gpu at 60fps if it's just chroma.
With 23.876 1472x1080 8-bit h.264 of a regular show, it's much lower of course for chroma-only.. 15%/15% roughly w/ d3d11, 18%/13% with copyback overlay.
In BE with EVR w/ the BBB clip, 18% cpu, 45% gpu w/16-bit fp, 18/34 w/8-bit integer. MPCVR about 13% cpu, 37% gpu using d3d9 dxva scaling (includes image, not just chroma) w/16-bit. 10% cpu, 13% gpu if 16-bit floating point is replaced with auto. Using the shaders it's about 30/55 w/ 16, about 20/35 w/ auto.
That's pretty amazing that you can get 10/13 on this old cpu with dxva scaling on a 60 fps clip using mpcvr if you use 8-bit textures.
And on that 1472x1080, about 5/5 w/ 8-bit texture. 8/10 w/ 16-bit.
So flossy, something is non-optimal on that UHD 730 setup if I am getting these numbers with something 8-9 years older.

If it's working with HC, you have your answer as to the renderer.It was due to another setting from MPC's Video Decoder, instead of D3D11, DXVA2, opting for D3D12cb did the trick.
So MPC-BE and madVR work together, with this new setting, for MKVs with multiple video tracks.

It sounds like you got the same on your DX11 test:
With image scaling too, 25% cpu, 92% gpu but many dropped frames.
And you were scaling from 1080 to 1152, I was scaling 1080 to 1440.
And I couldn't get GPU decoding working at all, always just got a black screen. Maybe with GPU decoding that could have opened up some headroom for scaling.
From memory I was not able to use DX9 rendering on that machine as I kept getting random black frames in full screen mode. I remember trying all the rendering options in madvr settings, but I'll go back there later this week and have another play around. I did play around with it already for about an hour, pretty sure I didn't miss anything.

Your 2014 HD 6000 may be more powerful than 2021 UHD 730 for shader workloads due to the higher core count (384 vs 192).

Nice clip, 45/42 with my usual madVR config. 15/36 mpcVR. 20/46 evr-cp.
I use D3D9 for both decoding and rendering because it's old.
Maybe use DDU and chuck out the driver and let it download a new one from windows update catalog or use intel's download.

I watch mostly DVDs so upscaling from 480p60 to 1080p60/4k60 with sharpening filters is a big part of the viewing experience for me personally so I need something that can handle at least Lanczos quality scaling preferably with antiringing , and I just don't think 192 shader cores of a UHD 730 can do that. A 3060 has 3582 shader cores and twice the clock speed, it just steamrolls everything I throw at it, doesn't even make enough heat to spin the fans and I've only got a 2-fan MSI Ventus which isn't even as quiet as 3 fan cards.
I will go back and check everything but it was a clean install for a new build so there wouldn't have been any residual drivers interfering, and the driver was auto updated from windows update cause it installed the new Intel control panel in the windows app store. I think UHD 730 is just a shit GPU.

I still have a hardware decoder card for DVDs from back in the day. No motherboard to plug it into, but I remember it had a good picture.
If you get a 7680 × 4320 display, you can do an integer multiple of scaling with 480. :)

Hey guys, I've heard that unchecking some trade quality for performance settings actually make the quality worse, so I do not know which ones to keep. I use DXVA2 (copy-back), tone map HDR using pixel shaders, using 10 bit display at the refresh rate of the movies. I wouldn't tick use dxva for chroma, that's known to be buggy in terms of chroma alignment.

I compared it a while ago and the chroma alignment was different with DXVA native exclusively vs DXVA native + MadVR chroma upscaling
But they were both bad so he should avoid the issue altogether by simply making sure not to use DXVA native, in which case those perf optimisation check boxes won't affect him

I remember there was discussion when it first came out that the advantage of this pairing was that it would fix the chroma problem that nvidia has with dxva2-native.
neon, if you have an overpowered system, you also have the option of doing as huhn does and use "none" for decoding (software, look at task manager to see how much cpu usage increases on the performance tab). But generally, if you're already using copy-back, then all the rest will just come down to your algorithm choices for scaling, dithering, etc. Don't get too carried away, more cpu/gpu usage does not always present a better image.

I can't recall, there were some reports a few years ago about D3D11 decoding being broken but that may no longer be relevant.
Regardless, I'm not sure D3D11 decoding is as "tried and tested" as DXVA2-copyback which I've been using for years without issue.
But I recently stopped using it for everything except 4k60/HEVC cause even a i3-12100 can easily decode everything below that without breaking a sweat.

for the like 20 times to the same people madVR doesn't have a d3d11 path it is always d3d9 always.
so the presentation of d3d11 and the decode have nothing todo with each other.
with d3d11 native decode the first thing madVR does is copy that back to d3d9.
with d3d11 presentation it just copies from d3d9 to d3d11 these operation are not free but also not expensive well on a iGPU they kinda are. only presentation is done using d3d11.
this is totally different with proper d3d11 renderer like mpcVR which fully supports d3d11. scaling deint super rez you name it it supports it while madVR can only accept a frame from it and copy that back to d3d9 that's it.

I was playing around earlier with monitoring power consumption using hwinfo64. Usually we look at load %s on the CPU and GPU, but total power consumption is I think possibly a better measure. You can right click and have it show graph for total on the cpu package, or individual graphs like IA, GT and DRAM.
madVR is the most power-hungry renderer, even when using DXVA.

but the chroma issue occurs with LAV's DXVA-native so by changing the decoder in LAV to D3D11 is the chroma issue resolved?

That's what nevcariel and madshi said back then. That it was a damage-free method of doing native decoding. The presentation path is not very relevant imo because I have observed it is entirely possible to use D3D11 native decoding with a D3D9 presentation path.
I didn't see any test images and I can't test because I don't have nvidia.
Two pairs would have to be looked at in this context:
d3d11n decode-d3d11 pres (even if it's interopped)
d3d11n decode-d3d9 pres
If both the same, and since you already know what it looks like with dxva2n you will have the answer fast.

The purpose is testing for the chroma bug in native decoding, right? If so, you do not need to test different present methods. They have no connection and no one has ever suggested there was an issue with presentation in either D3D9 or D3D11. There is no "native" or "copy back" for presentation and presentation is done in RGB; a chroma bug similar to the one with DXVA2 native is not even possible.
Worrying about presentation in this case simply over complicates testing.

DXVA2 can not handle a YCbCr image over.
so madVR actually gets a DXVA2 scaled RGB image and just uses some math to undo it.

Is the answer for everyone who is able to do D3D11-native decoding, to stop using copy-back as unnecessarily loading on the system when this method exists?
Using copy-back with my settings on total CPU package power (which includes iGPU) I was averaging 12.5 watts on a video's intro. Changing it to D3D11-native increased the power consumption by 1 watt to 13.5. Changing presentation mode to D3D11 down from D3D9 overlay increased the power consumption a further 3 watts to 16.5. Using "None" back on D3D presentation was about 11.5 watts.
I suppose it would change on codec/resolution/scaling, etc. Interesting that "none" for this h.264 piece was 1 watt less than a copy-back operation and that D3D11n was more (implies drivers aren't optimized), which would be fine if it was nvidia and avoided the chroma issue.
Everyone's setup will be different.
