because with MPC HT i can only use madVR when using CoreAVC. i would like to be able to utilize it with all the decoders i use. Besides CoreAVC I use XVID and Nvidia PureVideo Decoder.

While trying to nail down that chroma plane shifting bug, I managed to get a different one.
After pressing Alt+Enter enough, MPC-HC eventually stopped rendering the GUI and video in windowed mode and right clicking on the video caused MPC-HC to crash.. faulting module was madVR.
Excessively large log available here (http://stfcc.org/misc/madVR - log 3.rar).

First and foremost thanks to Madashi for making madVr. I unforunately have yet to experience the awesomeness that it promises to provide. When I enable madvr I am getting a strange green bar at the bottom AS well as everything looks blurry, almost as if the video is trying to convert to 3d.

Any ideas of how to resolve this?

ffdshow

CoreAVC makes sence if you have powered nVIDIA GPU (CUDA + madVR)

i dont like using ffdshow. i prefer to chose which codecs i use individually because it usually produces better results and i have more control over how things are done.

yes i have a nvidia GPU thats what i use CoreAVC so that i can utilize CUDA to lower the stress on my CPU. I have found by doing this i can encode and watch anime at the same time. Before i couldnt do this because encoding maxes out the cpu and i would get frame drops while i watched.

madVR helps this out even further as it uses the GPU to render the picture. i really like that i can use it with h.264 but not everything i have is encoded in h.264. much is encoded in XVID/DIVX or MPEG2/DVD but i cannot get madVR to work with the XVID Decoder or the Nvidia PureVideo Decoder. anyone know how to get there to work? is it a problem with the decoders or madVR?

on a side note has anyone done a comparison in picture quality since the updated where you can resize using gpu texture units? i believe Bilinear is better than nearest Neighbor but i dont know how either compare to Spline 36 (which i believe is Spline 3 taps currently)

*note everything i have i have encoded myself from my own dvds

I'm pretty sure PureVideo is basically DXVA1. DXVA uses the GPU to decode and leaves the decoded video on the GPU where it is then output. CoreAVC uses CUDA on the GPU to decode, but CUDA data is returned to the main system memory, allowing madVR to copy it back to the GPU and perform its shaders on it and then display it. Currently madVR does not have a way to access decoded video still on the GPU(doesn't work with DXVA2 for h264 and VC1 either), so it will not work with PureVideo.

You should be able to use either the base Microsoft mpeg2 decoder, the MPC included decoder, or ffdshow set only to decode mpeg2 without issue with madVR. Do note though there is currently a bug with dvd menu navigation when playing a DVD(iso or drive) causing MPC to crash when using madVR. madshi says he'll get to fixing that eventually but not a high priority. Makes a lot of us sad pandas, having to go through every DVD I rip and chop out the VOBs.

As for XviD I'm guessing you don't have the decoder set up to output YV12, or it is possibly not able to? Thats the only color format madVR accepts. If it won't output YV12 MPC will just connect to the next renderer that will. Most video formats encode YV12 so having the decoder output it in this format is usually lossless, leaving the entire quality control in madVR's superior hands. I believe ffdshow can decode DviX/XviD correctly as well, worse comes to worse.

ok by switching outpu to YV12 i can now use madVR with XVID. thanks alot

also i hope that madVR can do DVD menus soon. also is there any plan on getting DXVA working with madVR? also what are some more DXVA codecs/decoders so that i can test them out?

I have had to go back to 032 also due to problems with 034, I initally though it was a problem with reclock and the addition to 034 you mention. I have discovered though that the problems happen without reclock in the loop. For me the issue is the upload and rendering queus do not fill up and then run dry.

The problem does not happen in 032 providing I have aero enabled. and does not happen at all in windowed mode.

I have not. I have had the exact issue you describe a couple of times however but I went back to 032 for other reason which is the upload and render queues not always filling at the start of playback. IE I could start video playback and the queues would only buffer a couple of frames (which caused intermittant stuttering). I could then close and restart (or even simply pause and unpause) the video and they would totally fill as normal. I assumed the issue with the queue also caused the freezes I had.

For the life of me I could not get the issue with queues not filling correctly to happen in the debug build.

After +10 loops, it freezes at the end of the loop and I have to kill PotPlayer from the task manager.

I tried everything I could think of to replicate with the debug version but like you I could not. Its good to know somone else has simuler issues but I never had the freeze issue with 032 yet but maybe the issue you talk about there is due to the loop. When it freezed for me in 034 there was no looping involved.

although madshi discussed a lot about hdmi initially, as i dont have much knowledge, i cudnt go deep & thus here are some simple questions..

1. does hdmi features like deep color, xvycc etc.. make a noticeable difference?

2. Is hdmi 1.4 or newer (1.4a) have any important/significant feature improvement over 1.3/1.3a so that i should emphasize 1.4 while buying a graphics card; if my preference are better colors & quality?

3. If a graphics card natively supports both hdmi & dvi & i use a dvi to dvi cable, will i get the hdmi features like deep color, xvycc etc? If not, how about a dvi to hdmi cable? (graphics card dvi to monitor's hdmi)

Its a little off topic. much of the new hdmi features much depend if you have a LCD/plasma to support the features... Then there is audio over hdmi to think about also.

Personally the next gfx card I buy will need to support full 1080p at 120hz over hdmi, I think only the latest spec can do this.

Hi, my first post here!
First off, great renderer madshi, much better PQ than EVR CP! :)

The most major issue I have with madVR is that in my two-display setup, if my TV is set at 24Hz, then on that display MPC-HC becomes very unresponsive (and I'm not confusing this with the apparent sluggishnesss due to the low refresh rate), the player hangs on seeking, and there are problems with pausing/stopping immediately. The only way to overcome this "hang" is by clicking on the first display (PC monitor), which revives the player into action. All this in windowed mode though, exclusive (full screen) seems to be good.

If I set the refresh rate of my TV to 60Hz, though, everything works properly, in both windowed and exclusive mode.

dansrfe
19th October 2010, 07:34
I have the same problem. Apparently opening the file on the 60Hz then transferring it over (even if paused) to a 24Hz leads to massive stuttering etc. The fix is to drag the folder to the 24Hz display and open it there. madVR does not switch displays properly I think from one to another.

Guns N' Roses
19th October 2010, 08:16
I've tried moving MPC-HC to the 24Hz display, stopped the file, and then double click on the mkv file again but the problem still persists. But my issue isn't with the video itself, rather the player becomes unresponsive and unusable.

You shouldn't do that. Madshi said before that right now madVR does not know how to handle that situation. The way things work right now is you have to have the player on the display you want before opent the file.

@Gun N' Roses: that situation is a known problem with Aero. I have a similar setup myself, though I don't exactly have stability problem. Just make sure you use exclusive mode. Or, alternatively, turn aero off.

Uninstall all drivers, players, and codecs completely. Reinstall all of it and it should work. Your cpu is powerful enough. Your GPU is more than sufficient for HD playback. The amount of RAM shouldn't matter if you offload most of it to your GPU via CUDA.

The amount of Video RAM does matter when using CoreAVC(CUDA) and madVR. My 9600M GT (256MB) GPU runs out of RAM when using madVR and CUDA at the same time. You can check the load levels for GPU core and memory using the latest GPU-z.

@Gun N' Roses: that situation is a known problem with Aero. I have a similar setup myself, though I don't exactly have stability problem. Just make sure you use exclusive mode. Or, alternatively, turn aero off.

Velle! Turning Aero off makes things work like butter, but I miss aero. And this seems to be a problem only with my configuration, ranpha (the person who writes the guides at imouto.my) got it working with aero.

EDIT: Spoke to soon...with aero off in windowed mode, there is about a 1cm thick horizontal bar at the bottom of the video which is seems like its torn from the main video itself. I cannot take a screenshot of it, it doesn't show up in that. If I maximize the window or go full screen, it disappears.

I disagree.

I had a similar system - an overclocked opteron and an HD2600XT, and it was borderline at best for 1080p material with madVR.

This is a high end renderer, you need a decent PC. I now have an overclocked Q660 Quadcore and an HD4850 video card.
Much better.

Yes - MadVR uses alot of juice.

I upgraded from an 8500GT 512MB of ram to a GTX 450 - now madvr works like it should... even 0.34... :)

I'm on a laptop with Windows XP Pro x86, C2D @ 2.66Hz, 4GB but only 3GB recognized cause of x86, ATi Radeon HD 4570 with latest drivers and catalyst 10.9 mobility modded. I can run an AviSynth script including deblock_qed(), smoothtweak, smoothlevels, and spline36resize (sometimes spline64resize depending on my mood) and upscale it automatically with correct A/R to 1920 x 1080 all in ffdshow's AviSynth tab with setmtmode, MT, and another threading function being used with ffmpeg-mt decoding a BD-50 AVC while running Firefox, Word, COD, and MSN (which sucks up a lot of mem btw) all on a 1080p 15.6" laptop screen without any lag whatosever even when initializing the file. :P

Most of the time I turn off my internal resize script and use madVR's spline at 4 taps for luma (upscampling and downsampling) and chroma.

What are the ultimate settings to use in madvr?
I can't tell about upscaling but for downscaling I agree that Lanczos4 is the best compromise to my eyes...Spline and Lanczos8 have too much ringing, and Lanczos3 is not sharp enough. I'm having a real blast at upscaling SD way above my display resolution, do all kind of avisynth filtering on it and letting mVR downscale it..SuperSampling decreases edge aliasing and looks really great, especially when the GPU does the final downscaling part "for free" http://forum.slysoft.com/images/smilies/agreed.gif

What's annoying me w/ mVR is the +1000 hours I've spent before my pj, using the blurry looking and hiccuping HR...it's like when you buy a much better audio rig and have to listen to all your music all over again, to hear what you've been missing all along

BTW, so far as long as there's no looping involved, 0.32 seems trouble-free....no lock up.

One approach is to look at the stats for each of the scaling algorithms, look up any terms you don't understand, and use your newfound knowledge to guide you as you experiment with different settings.

Before I started using madVR, I had no idea what luma, chroma, ringing, aliasing, etc meant. Knowing what effect each algorithm will have on the image really helps you find a combination that's most pleasing to your eyes.

Personally, I prefer: Softcubic 70 for chroma, and Spline 3 Taps for luma.

Reinstalled Windows on my HTPC today. Using the latest nvidia drivers and exclusive mode fails every time at high refresh rates now.
