I have a problem with subs vanishing when I pause video. If I quickly unpause and pause again they then show up. Also would still like to make screencaps in MPC-HC but I get a DIB error. On a better note the latest builds play smoothly on my Intel HD video chipset on my laptop and on my lowly Nvidia G210.

IIRC, Hypernova & Thuan reported the disappearing sub while pausing (& it also happens to me couple times).

Madshi addressed the bug in here:

2. When paused, the sub disappeared.Yes, I've noticed that myself. I don't know yet if I can fix it with the current render chain. I plan to modify the rendering chain in a couple of weeks, fixing problems like "subtitles draw over the madVR GUI" etc. After that this problem should definitely be fixed. Maybe I can fix it before then, not sure right now.

MadShi i hope you do not prioritize subtitle bugfix before your render chain is done. the render chain is the most important part of MadVR ... and if the fonts look a little less good until then is not a problem for at least me ...

Thank you very much for subtitle support, madshi. Fantastic work, as usual. I am happy to drop the CPU-hungry DirectVobSub.

Also, I assume madvr denies the use of MPC-HC shaders by design. If this is the case, will there perhaps be a stronger dither available in the future?

im not much into technical terms, but how can a shader replace a renderer?

Are you already using MPC-HC 1.5.0.2988 or newer?

Rendering is based on shaders partially. *Fixed* EVR CP + HQ shaders was mentioned, of course.

madVR also uses shaders, it just doesn't let you input your own shaders.

Besides, i don't see EVR CP ever being "fixed".

Yes and that's the wrong way you lose the customizability/flexibility and additionally the performance of DXVA and need to workaround with other APIs that's no real solution for Playback Only either, though for some streams as we have learned it can be beneficial to fallback to a Native GPU/DSP API to avoid rendering problems of DXVA (though you should smartly combine them and use them when they are the most efficient not blindly force them, more adaptiveness can yield better results).
Using Nvidias/ATI/AMDs DSP for Playback with their Native API is not as efficient on Windows as utilizing DXVA, so you should carefully make decisions when it's absolutely needed to go Native and introduce the APIs overhead, and Personally i only see that case currently when it goes into the Direction of Rendering Problems.

Maybe offtopic, but I found out, that decoders without deinterlacing option ON provide following effects by interlaced MPEG-2 SD playback: [...]

Which deinterlacer+resizer do you recommend to use for MPEG-2 SD videos?
If you have a CUDA capable NVidia card, try nevcairiel's new NVidia hardware decoder + deinterlacer. Otherwise I'd suggest DScaler5 IVTC mod for movies. For video content, any decoder should do, but you need to deinterlace (I'd suggest ffdshow) before sending the video to madVR. yadif should work well enough.

missing line always come with the blank control+msg box.
This one sentence is the clue for the fix. The blank control stuff is most probably caused by a memory or resource leak. So I just need to find and fix that leak, after that the missing subtitle lines will probably be gone, too, because after what you just wrote I think the missing subtitle lines are just a side effect of the memory/resource leak.

MadShi i hope you do not prioritize subtitle bugfix before your render chain is done. the render chain is the most important part of MadVR ... and if the fonts look a little less good until then is not a problem for at least me ...
I generally try to fix really important bugs first, then work on something new. Subtitles seem to need 1-2 critical bugfixes, after that I'll work on the final exclusive mode rendering path. Don't worry, subtitles should be completely dealt with very soon.

Also, I assume madvr denies the use of MPC-HC shaders by design. If this is the case, will there perhaps be a stronger dither available in the future?
It's not a question of "denying" the shaders, it's more a question of not having implemented support for such custom shaders yet. I will probably do that sooner or later, but I have some more important things on my to do list that I need to do before.

-save image failed (GetDIB failed, hr = 80004005)
Screenshotting is not implemented yet, planned for a future version.

Agreed.

And pigs are going to fly...

No, seriously, let's revisit this in a couple of weeks/months. I think you are going to change your mind. At the latest when madVR reaches v1.0, maybe before.

There is a problem with ASS subtitles in FSE mode:
Each time you activate or deactivate the seek bar (by moving the cursor up and down) the subtitles seek a bit backwards in time.

I have set MPC-HC to not buffer any subtitles, but you can also see it misbehaving when activating a buffer.
This will automatically be solved in a future version when I implement some changes to the rendering chain. Don't know if I can fix this in the short run, maybe not.

I was testing madVR on my laptop (Nvidia 9200M GS) but experienced occasional stutter every now and then, it looked like the typical performance-too-low,-trying-to-catch-up-stutter.
This was on 1080p24, everything already set to Bilinear. [...]

I'm basically looking for smooth and tearing free output - I know I have to compromise in terms of quality with this system.
You get stuttering also in fullscreen exclusive mode? Try setting all to Bilinear (as you already did) plus modify all "flush & wait" settings in the "windowed mode tweaks" page to "flush". Does that help? Also try toggling the "upload frames in render thread" option.

On the 24p video the gpu load is only around 50% but I get a lot of dropped frames.
What are the queues saying (madVR OSD -> Ctrl + J)?

So benefits of EVR: DVXA + shaders personalisations
Drawbacks: several weird behaviors not explained by Microsoft + no really bugfixs + not sure it is developed anymore

DVXA: if it is really a must-have, then you can use new decoder from nevcairiel for Nvidia GPUs

Shaders: madVR offers several shaders for downscale/upscale, and at some point, I think madshi will allow shaders personnalisation (but I don't think it's a "very asked" feature)...

I really think madVR will replace EVR (for people, not MS of course) rather than the opposite.

Hi, Can you tell me how to use subtitles in madVR? MPC-HC build 1.5.2.2998 and I can't load subs.
It's working now.

BTW. Are you considered to make native 64bit version and DXVA support in the future? I know it's a lot work, but I'm only asking
I switch today to madVR since evr-cp is a big failure.

@namaiki: Im already using version 1.5.1.2903 MPC-HC and rev.3771 of ffdshow. But thanks for the link, I will try out with version 1.5.2.
In general loading the video isn't instant, and there's tearing, I have dither disabled and spline checked. Maybe it has to do my screen is 1080, which is quite a load...

I really think madVR will replace EVR (for people, not MS of course) rather than the opposite.
Who knows?... MadShi. :D

This will automatically be solved in a future version when I implement some changes to the rendering chain. Don't know if I can fix this in the short run, maybe not.

It's not that big of a problem for me, just thought I'd report it. I don't suffer from missing lines btw.

You get stuttering also in fullscreen exclusive mode?

Yes.

Try setting all to Bilinear (as you already did) plus modify all "flush & wait" settings in the "windowed mode tweaks" page to "flush". Does that help? Also try toggling the "upload frames in render thread" option.

What are the queues saying (madVR OSD -> Ctrl + J)?

I will try to recapitulate what I've tested, since my posts got a bit confusing:

I use two different samples for my tests at the moment. One is 1080p24 (sample A) and the other one is 1080p60 (sample B).

The madVR settings I used:
FSE mode
All scaling = bilinear
All trade quality for speed options ticked
upload frames in render thread ticked (but also tried disabled - to no avail)
Everything to "flush" (Does this actually impact FSE mode? I wouldn't have touched it if not for you asking me to do it)

Here are the results for different chains:
Test #1: A+ffdshow+madrv = smooth
Test #2: A+lavcuvid+EVR = smooth
Test #3: A+MPC DXVA+EVR = smooth
Test #4: A+lavcuvid+madvr = jerky

Test #5: B+ffdshow+madvr = jerky
Test #6: B+lavcuvid+EVR = jerky
Test #7: B+MPC DXVA+EVR = smooth
Test #8: B+lavcuvid+madvr = jerky

Test #2 and #4:
It's interesting that only test #4 is jerky, while test #2 is not as GPU load in test #4 is only around 50%, while all queues are between 1-8/8 and 7-8/8. Seems that it's just a tad too slow.
The number of dropped and delayed frames grows about every other second on Test #4 - not pleasant.

Test #5:
This could actually be the CPU not being fast enough to decode - CPU load shows enormous spikes. The queues are jumping around like crazy, I can't really describe it. Basically all possible values can be seen.

Test #6 and Test #7:
While test #7 proves that the decoder chip is fast enough for the clip, test #6 still is jerky.

Test #8:
Expected result after test #4.

Test #5, #6 and #8:
Basically hundreds, if not thousands, dropped frames per minute.

That said nevcairiel announced performance improvements for lavcuvid, so I guess waiting until then is an option before looking into the possibility of improving the teamwork of those two filters. I did a test with B+lavcuvid+nullrenderer in graphstudio and it was about 70 fps, so there is not much play.

System specs:
Intel T3400 2,16 MHz
Nvidia 9200M GS (512 MB dedicated RAM, driver v267.76)
Win 7 x64, Aero off
Currently testing on the 1366*768 laptop display

My original complaint about "performance-too-low,-trying-to-catch-up-stutter" was a 720p movie played on a 1080p display. The stutter happened only once or twice in an hour, so it's not comparable to my tests above. It was basically my reason to start investigating the performance of this system further.

======

Now for something different:
I get lots of frame drops in window mode when playing the 1080p60 sample on my desktop, which has a Core i7 and a HD 5850. No drops in FSE mode though. I also see tearing.
This is on Windows 7 x64 with Aero off, catalyst 11.2 + 11.4

Now with subtitles support I have given up with EVR and switched to madVR. It's bloody nice quality tbh :)

I was wondering if it was possible for madVR to do the deinterlacing. Like port the yadifx2 that gets used in ffdshow and execute it using the GPU shader units??

Haven't had a chance to keep up with madVR developments recently.

Just bought myself a new system and got madVR up & running today and I'm having serious playback problems; primarily in fullscreen exclusive, with subtitle rendering disabled. (first thing I checked)

My previous E5200 + 9400 system had no problem with playback, my new 2500K + GTX570 has the render queue drop to 1-2/8 after a few seconds in fullscreen exclusive and shortly after it starts to constantly drops frames.

Have tried with/without desktop composition running. Doesn't matter if I have GPU set to adaptive power saving (seems to run at half speed with madVR) or maximum performance. In its power-reduced state, GPU load is 15% and CPU load is under 20% at all times. This is with Bicubic 75 on chroma, Softcubic 50 on luma running 1080p video at 100%.

In windowed mode it stays at 7-8/8 most of the time, but every couple of minutes it goes to 6-7/8 and drops a frame. No unexpected spikes in CPU/GPU load.
MPC-HC uses about 220MB RAM and there's about 320MB VRAM used on the GPU. Frame drop estimate is one every 8+ hours. (23.99997Hz)

Render times in madVR seem fine. As with my previous 9400 system, flush/sleep/flush/don't seem to be the optimal settings. (though I can't force it to run poorly as I could with the 9400 and lanczos4/8) Have tried it on the defaults and other settings too, of course.

Any ideas? I can get a log of the buffers dropping almost instantly, but nothing consistently showing the frame dropping yet.

Update: I have a log that somewhat demonstrates this. Typically when logging things, it behaved a lot better.
This should show it dropping frames and going from 7-8/8 to 1-2/8 and then staying there consistently. I let it run for a few minutes to see if it would drop any further frames but after 12 or so it didn't seem to drop any more. (but I'm sure it would have if I had watched the whole film) Sometimes it was visibly stuttering but did not report a dropped/delayed frame.

Try unchecking 'upload frames in render thread' in madVR settings. You will probably need to restart the movie after changing this setting as for me it results in a blank picture if you do it on the fly.

Didn't have time to do a proper test but it's definitely not helped the render queue dropping within a minute or so of starting playback and the backbuffer queue is now at 0-2/3!

It may have helped reduce dropped frames, though I didn't get to leave it running long enough.

I believe you need Reclock.
In your case, refresh rate is less than the fps of the video.

I have tested with and without Reclock. This is only for performance tests. In real life I will hook it up to 1080p24 capable display for "real" movies - probably with Reclock enabled.

I'm just wondering why clocks stay so low - even when I activate Lanczos scaling.

I think nvidia have a tool to lock the clock speeds...try it? obviously you don't want the "SpeedStep" mechanism to trigger during a movie. I've seen it happening w/ HR and an HD3850 while spying on it using RivaTuner.

I will look for a tool.

I didn't find any option called "powermiser", but the nvidia control panel has an option called "energy management mode" which I set to max (the other possible value is "adaptive"). It will not let the clocks raise higher though, max just keeps them from going lower in idle.

I'll search for a tool and maybe try out an older driver.

Try using powermizer manager to remove the energy management. Also, try opening NVidia Control panel, selecting the "Adjust image settings with preview"tab, and then minimize the control panel.

Add MPC-HC and set power management mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance" and it should run your GPU at the maximum clockspeed.

I would try using MSI Afterburner (http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm) to keep track of what your GPU is doing. I have found GPU-Z to be inaccurate in the past.
Afterburner also makes it easy to track what the maximum GPU clockspeeds, load etc reached was.

Many laptop manufacturers downclock their GPUs from the stock manufacturer clocks (Apple do it all the time) so it may be that GPU-Z is reporting the wrong maximum clock for your specific card.

A 9200M GS might have trouble with anything except bilinear or maybe bicubic at a push. My 9400 system struggled until exclusive mode was implemented and I never did check what the GPU load was.

Maybe I didn't make it clear: clocks are working like they should again: i.e. they go to max now.
Tested your control panel trick which indeed lets them go to max right away.
Anyways, the clock problem is solved. Thx for the help!

In other news: I recoded my 1080p60 sample with easier to decoder settings so as to not max out the cpu and made a new test with ffdshow as the decoder. It will still drop frames - about twice per second in FSE - but not like hundreds of them. If I run MPC in a maximized window (not fullscreen without FSE) the number of dropped frames gets low - maybe a few per minute. GPU load very stable between 45% and 50%.

Thanks for the sample. I can reproduce that madVR shows the subtitles too early. It's about 2 seconds on my PC, though and not 5 seconds. Furthermore with a different clip with different subtitles the problem does not occur. I don't know where the problem is coming from but the Haali Video Renderer shows exactly the same behaviour as madVR with both clips. So it seems to be a bug in MPC-HC and not in madVR. For your information: The Haali Video Renderer and madVR are using the same subtitle mechanism. EVR Custom uses a different mechanism. The solution used for EVR Custom can't be used for external renderers. I wish I could do more for you, but right now all I can say is that it seems to be a bug in MPC-HC and not in madVR.

I have same problem as @pawlol83, subtitles are out of sync when madVR or haali VR are in use. EVR-CP works fine with subtitles. So i pretty sure that is like you said, it's a bug in MPC-HC. I wish it will be fixed soon.
BTW. I can provide sample if you want.

EDIT:
Internal mkv subtitles works fine. And time format subtitles also work fine.
It something with frame rate because subs like this going out sync.
{203}{280}{y:i}xxxxxx
{484}{551}xxxxxx

but this works 00:00:09:{y:i}xxxxxx

You can use either one, just uncheck those with DXVA in the internal decoder ('transform filters') or dont use/install ffdShow DXVA video decoder. madVR hasn't supported DXVA yet.

Hi madshi, hi everybody,

Yesterday, I tested nevcairiel LAV CUVID decoder together with madVR and I think I found a bug. If it has been mentioned already, I am asking to excuse that, but by using the search function, I was not able to find informations about it.

My configuration is Windows XP SP3, a GT240 card with the newest non-beta drivers, LAVF Splitter, LAV CUVID decoder, madVR 0.47 and MPC-HC 1.5.2.2976. First of all, the playback of h.264, VC-1 ( also VC-1i ) and MPG2 works like a charm. Nevertheless I have a problem with madVRs fullscreen exclusive mode. My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster, which is capable to work with 50Hz refresh rate at a resolution of 1920x1080, but it does not report that in it's EDID data. Instead it claims that the minimum refresh rate is 59Hz, which is not true. So I configured Windows to show the "resolutions not supported by this monitor" and created a user defined resolution with timings for 50Hz progressive, and this works fine.

Now the problem: I am playing back a movie which has 25fps, so I adjust the refresh rate to 50Hz. This works fine in windowed mode with both VMR9 and madVR. When using VMR9 and MPC-HCs internal D3D mode, also everything is ok. When I use madVR and configure it not to use the exclusive mode, also everything is ok. But if I use madVR with activated exclusive mode, the refresh rate changes from 50Hz to 59,9Hz when switching to full screeen, and changes back to 50Hz when switching back to the window.

My best guess is that madVR relies on the EDID data and ignores the fact, that there is a user defined resolution which explicitly allows 50Hz refresh rate, disregardng the EDID information. If my assumption is correct, is it possible to change that behavior and to take account of the user defined resolutions / refresh rates when switching madVR to excluse full screen mode ?

I installed the new version today and used it a bit but now I can't get external/internal subs anymore with VMR-9 renderless in MPC HC (I'm on Windows XP). I must have messed up something. Installed a new version of MPC HC and installed/de-installed DirectVobSub as well. Normally subs work in DXVA mode or non-DXVA external or internal, now nothing works anymore (yeah VLC does lol).

No harm meant to madVR (it does look really nice, and it has worked in the past alongside VMR-9) but I just want my MPC HC + DXVA + subs (external/internal) back. Maybe it's just some messed up priority of fliters now. But if anyone can give some pointers on how to get MPC HC working again with DXVA and subs that would be great.

I have a similar LCD TV set up, and the NVidia driver defaults to 1920x1080/59p. However I was able to set up a custom 50p resolution and MadVR correctly shows this in exclusive mode.

I'm having a lot of problems getting madVR to work well on my new PC (i7 950 quadcore, 6gb ram, and same ati 4850 as old PC).

Delayed frames constantly, with jumping/jerking image to match.

Note I am using Windowed mode, not exclusive, as interlaced res's don't work with exclusive (and my projector works best with an interlaced res). The old PC worked very well with the same setup.

Things I have noticed:

- Flush settings at default. There's just too many permutations and combinations here, and the testing is not repeatable enough to get any meaningful results, except perhaps by fluke.

- Hyperthreading causes chaos. I have to turn it off. The other day I was cursing as playback was terrible - turns out the PC shat itself and reset the bios to defaults, which has HT on.

- Upload frames in Render thread is not good. It's better with it off.
With it on, the rendering times are really low on average (~10ms), but somehow the buffers empty (with spiked render times to match).
With it off, the render times are higher (~25ms), but the buffers are stable.

Even so, it's not as good as it was. It can be PERFECT, but then the wind changes direction and all hell breaks loose. madVR used to be rock solid with my old PC.

All I did was replace the mobo, cpu and ram , and do a clean OS install. Almost everthing else is identical....except the catalyst version, I did get the latest catalyst for the new build.

Another thing I did notice is that if I turn spread spectrum off in the bios, then both madVR and Reclock report a different refresh rate (about 95.4hz instead of 95.90hz). So obviously it is back to ON.

It's very frustating.

One slightly annoying problem I noticed: I've got two displays, and when madVR goes in exclusive mode, it sometimes (but not always) prevents me from interacting with stuff on the other monitor (actually, as far as I can see, one of 3 things can happen: 1. mouse input is ignored completely on other monitor; 2. mouse interaction works, but as soon as I release mouse button, focus returns to the video; 3. I can use programs on the other monitor normally).

Question for those having trouble with dropped and delayed frames. Have you tried adjusting your 3D settings for your video card? I had a similar problem after tweaking a few things and I traced it down to my Anti-Aliasing settings. Super-sample AA causes dropped frames on every setting on my 5770 card, but Adaptive Multi-sample does not.
