Ok. In some situations the default location might be ok. But often it is not. E.g. look here, playing a DVD (using an LAV test build with the new LAV DVD subtitle export to madVR) with MPC-HC with the "notify media player" zoom control option activated:
default position (http://madVR.com/doom9/stuff/MpcNotifyDefault.png) - | - move up = down (http://madVR.com/doom9/stuff/MpcNotifyMove.png)
Or here with the "notify media player" zoom control option deactivated:
default position (http://madVR.com/doom9/stuff/MpcDefault.png) - | - move up (http://madVR.com/doom9/stuff/MpcMoveUp.png) - | - move down (http://madVR.com/doom9/stuff/MpcMoveDown.png)
Isn't any of the move options always better (in this example at least)? I think having one subtitle line in the active video area and one subtitle line in the black bar is rather bad, and it happens quite often with the standard location.
Ah, I can definitely see the advantage of the feature in that example. Fortunately for the content I watch, I don't require subtitles to be moved and in fact find it a bit displacing when it is due to moving my peripheral vision to keep up with the video and read subtitles at the same time.
Fullscreen Normal (http://i.imgur.com/EJE10m6.jpg) - Fullscreen Bottom (http://i.imgur.com/5OT0Ahb.jpg)
Half-screen Normal (http://i.imgur.com/ewUSoUq.jpg) - Half-screen Bottom (http://i.imgur.com/rqj8QHY.jpg)
Since I don't really watch any content where subtitles aren't already inside the video frame, I don't personally require the need to move subtitles into the active video area. I'd rather save the process calculation time if it is all the same.

Just a quick question: when SuperRes under image enhancements gets updates, is superchromares also getting updated? If not, is the superres filter for chroma at all recommended, given how it's based off the old iteration of SuperRes that got scrapped?

SO SuperRes Linear Light option is there to prevent brightness increase? Is that something I'd want for better quality pictures or for better accuracy? I use NNEDI3 + SuperRes Chroma Upscaling + SuperRes Image Refinement.

R9 390, Windows 10
same here, win 8.1 and GTX 970
happens with BE and HC (but unless it's my imagination it seems slightly better in HC)
EDIT: retested after reboot and it isn't happening with either player. i'll see if it happens again in the future, but it was happening for at least a few releases

Welcome to video driver bugs? It's not MadVR's fault, but it does use more of the driver than anything but games. Since you can lose everything at practically anytime anyway, if the power dies or anything else locks it up, you should always be autosaving. Computers suck.

madVR flashes frame from the future (probably last in the queue) on frame step. Not on every one, but very often. It looks like that Frame1->Flashes Frame (something from the queue)->Frame2 it is easily reproducible with MPC-HC and CTRL+left arrow to frame step. Seems to happen only with DX11. Here is log http://1drv.ms/1MswFTV
I think you're experiencing what I reported two times before in this thread but nobody else confirmed it:

i just want to confirm one thing about the doubling/quadrupling functions: my understanding is that they work in sequence, not independently.
I.e. the doubling algorithm is applied first, and then if there is scope for quadrupling (depending on the scaling factor and settings) the quad algorithm is applied.
Or is the quad algorithm applied directly, if the scaling factor is such, skipping the doubling algo?
I think it's the first, but am not 100% sure.

.ASS looks good. PGS from a bluray is blurry. It's not even the same font as the .ASS. But the filters say xy->madVR.
PGS are bitmap subtitles. madVR does not know which text is in such subtitles. It's all just pixels. So all madVR can do is draw them onto the original video image (before upscaling) and then upscale the subtitle bitmaps together with the video. Which will of course be much blurrier than rendering text (SRT, ASS) subtitles in the final resolution of the upscaled video. If you want sharp subtitles, you'll have to use some subtitle tool to convert PGS to SRT or ASS.
At first the move subtitles wasn't working for me. Then it started to work. But it messes up when scrubbing through the video. With my .ASS sample it starts at the bottom if I have it selected, but if I scrub a bit then it goes higher up.
You probably have not updated XySubFilter to build 745 yet, have you?

Just a quick question: when SuperRes under image enhancements gets updates, is superchromares also getting updated? If not, is the superres filter for chroma at all recommended, given how it's based off the old iteration of SuperRes that got scrapped?
No, SuperChromaRes has not been updated for quite a while. Although it's based on the same principle, it's a different algorithm, and it's still on my to do list to look into.
SO SuperRes Linear Light option is there to prevent brightness increase? Is that something I'd want for better quality pictures or for better accuracy? I use NNEDI3 + SuperRes Chroma Upscaling + SuperRes Image Refinement.
In theory you should uncheck "Linear Light" if the video you're playing has been downscaled by the studio by using gamma light (which is what most studios do, I suppose). And you should activate "Linear Light" if the video you're playing has been downscaled by the studio by using linear light - or if you're playing a video that hasn't been downscaled by the studio at all. Since it's very hard to know what the studio did, I can't really tell you which way to set that option. I prefer it unchecked, others prefer it checked. Unchecked thins black lines a bit, but may introduce a little bit of aliasing. So simply try and use what looks better to your eyes.
What's wrong with 89.11? When playing video, computer is fully dead, hang up.
I doubt it has much to do with 89.11. Probably the same would have happened with 89.9. This is probably a GPU driver or even OS problem, or a hardware problem.
Yesterday mpc-hc leaked lots of memory here. I did not yet (will do later) take a closer look but it was after I upgraded madvr. Did you maybe run out of RAM?
Oh, that would be ugly. Can you double check whether you can reproduce that problem, and whether it's a new problem introduced by madVR or by the latest MPC-HC build or by the GPU driver, maybe? There was an AMD beta driver recently which leaked lots of (GPU?) RAM.
i just want to confirm one thing about the doubling/quadrupling functions: my understanding is that they work in sequence, not independently.
Correct.

I'd try NNEDI3 64 for doubling + super-xbr 75 quadrupling.
Thanks, I'll give that a try. Could be a good mix between the softness of nnedi and the sharpness of super-xbr.
By the way, I have been thinking that because everyone is so keen on getting sharp pictures, we've got to a point where we accept too many artifacts, ringing and other distortions.
In in many cases, a softer image may in fact be a better option; we have to accept that compromises exist when upscaling and it's up to us, to set the balance between different aspects of the PQ.
It would be nice if we had a high quality deblocking filter that doesn't overly soften the image, but gets rid of some of these artifacts. I think as resolutions get higher (4K) this will be more useful, especially for lower quality SD sources.

That's all technically possible, but I have rather limited development resources. I'll think about it, but the end result in the short term will probably be a *very* simple (and maybe somewhat ugly) solution. If you have a good idea for something like that, which I could implement in just a couple of minutes, let me know.
I can't help you with that (I'm not a C++ dev :( ), but you can ask the MPC-HC/BE dev teams, I think they are smart enough for that :)
Just a quick question: when SuperRes under image enhancements gets updates, is superchromares also getting updated? If not, is the superres filter for chroma at all recommended, given how it's based off the old iteration of SuperRes that got scrapped?

Gamma correct also increases the brightness in the case of SuperRes in a noticeable way (independent from the source?), at least if you choose a sharpness option > 2.
I upscaled the brightness sensitive image you posted here to 1440p via Jinc AR:
http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1740010&postcount=38
No SR:
http://abload.de/thumb/nosrwqk0v.png (http://abload.de/image.php?img=nosrwqk0v.png)
Strength 2, sharpness 3, no LL:
http://abload.de/thumb/llofflxj7b.png (http://abload.de/image.php?img=llofflxj7b.png)
LL:
http://abload.de/thumb/llonnkjgn.png (http://abload.de/image.php?img=llonnkjgn.png)
I also noticed the brightness increase without LL in other videos from the web.
So, if one wants to use SR as a sharpener , I think it's a good idea to use linear light.

Previously SR wasn't impacting too much until 3, but 4 had a serious jump in computational power used. At least for me...

Hi madshi,
I have a sample from an HDTV cap that SM FRC has trouble with, maybe you can improve it's behavior.
With the latest MPC-HCx64, madVR and LAV, in the first 5 seconds there's heavy frame jumping/repeating and after that it plays fine, disabling SM fixes issue at the start.
I tried different decoding modes in LAV to no avail, but madVR's rendering path made a difference.
The issue above only happens as described with D3D9 new path, with Overlay and D3D11 it's almost gone, and there's still something going on (huge rendering time spikes etc).
When tested with MPC-BEx64 and it's internal decoder the issue isn't as bad, but doesn't stop after 5 seconds and keeps occurring till the end.

Oh, that would be ugly. Can you double check whether you can reproduce that problem, and whether it's a new problem introduced by madVR or by the latest MPC-HC build or by the GPU driver, maybe? There was an AMD beta driver recently which leaked lots of (GPU?) RAM.
It seems to have been introduced between 0.89.9 and 0.89.10. I was running Catalyst 15.7, now upgraded to 15.10 beta but it does not make a difference. I have reset settings to absolute defaults. I start a small video at 100% zoom (windowed). As long as the zoom stays the same the RAM usage does not seem to grow much but when I start maximizing the window, then go back to 100% zoom, then maximize again, then go back to 100% ... the usage keeps growing and growing.
I created a (huge!) log if it helps:
1. open at 100%, wait for RAM to stabilize
2. maximize, then go 100% again
3. wait for RAM to stabilize
4. maximize, then go 100% again

You're not saying strength 4 is faster than strength 3, are you? It's not supposed to be that way, if that's what you're saying.
Yes, the performance optimization mostly benefits high strength settings. The previous madVR build got very slow when using high strength. The latest build should still lose some performance when turning up strength, but far less.

I just noticed something interesting: when I watch a video in MPC-HC in windowed (non-Exclusive) mode, madvr seems not to be using GPU acceleration, and the CPU usage is 90-100%, while the GPU is at 10% or less. This of course reflects itself in video stuttering. However, when I switch to fullscreen exclusive mode and monitor CPU and GPU usage, it then becomes more like 50-50.
Is there a specific reason for that? Is that expected behaviour?

Na, that was on 745. I also noticed with double lined subs, when the video frame is set to normal on a larger resolution screen (1080 on 4k), one line is on the edge on the bottom of the video frame instead of inside, and one is in the black bars. Looks a bit weird.

I've tried to reproduce it here. I've reset madVR to default settings. Then I've played a NTSC DVD with DXVA deinterlacing and software decoding, switching back and forth between windowed and fullscreen playback (both FSE and windowed maximized). RAM consumption seems to be stable here. We're talking CPU RAM, not GPU RAM, right? Can you also try with default madVR settings and a DVD, so we do the same tests? If you can't reproduce the problem that way, either, could you please find out where the difference is between a setup that produces the problem and a setup which doesn't?
At first the move subtitles wasn't working for me. Then it started to work. But it messes up when scrubbing through the video. With my .ASS sample it starts at the bottom if I have it selected, but if I scrub a bit then it goes higher up.
What exactly do you mean with "scrub"? It's not a term I'm familiar with in the context of video playback. Which subtitle move setting do you have selected? Can I have a sample of the video you have this problem with, and step-by-step guide to reproduce the problem with that sample?

(I can upload it somewhere if you don't have wget)

Vobsub problem sample cut:
http://expirebox.com/download/556b09503c5358055a1f823043bca9e3.html
Can't get the screenshot with the subtitles in FSE/overlay/windowed.
What should I see with that sample? It seems to work fine here, either with or without "move subtitles" enabled.
I don't have any NTSC DVD at hand.

Have you tried with madVR reset to default settings? Are we talking about CPU RAM or GPU RAM? How are you measuring RAM consumption? And which RAM consumption numbers do you get with v0.89.9 and v0.89.11? Thanks!

What exactly do you mean with "scrub"? It's not a term I'm familiar with in the context of video playback. Which subtitle move setting do you have selected? Can I have a sample of the video you have this problem with, and step-by-step guide to reproduce the problem with that sample?
I mean jumping to different parts of the video. Remember the crash involving smooth motion? Like that.
The anime I tested with is 1080 with no black bars, so it takes up the full screen when upscaled to 4k, I guess a 1080 screen with a 1080 source would also work. When I have "to the bottom of the screen/window" selected and I start the video, the subtitles start on the very bottom as expected. But if I jump around, the subtitles move north, and end up where the subtitles would be if I had selected "into active video area". So I guess you could say the first option in 'move subtitles' doesn't work correctly.

Yes. (But as I said I don't use Aero, which means "Old Path" windowed mode)

CPU RAM
How are you measuring RAM consumption?
Looking at the MPC-HC process in the Windows Task Manager.
And which RAM consumption numbers do you get with v0.89.9 and v0.89.11? Thanks!
0.89.9: at start goes to 330k and stays about there no matter what I do
0.89.11: at start goes to 330k, then after first max.->min. to 580k, 2nd max.->min. to 820k and just keeps on growing with roughly that speed to 1G, 2G...

Could someone please do me a favor and post a profile rule which activates a profile via a certain scalingFactor.x/y value?

You're not saying strength 4 is faster than strength 3, are you? It's not supposed to be that way, if that's what you're saying.
Yes, the performance optimization mostly benefits high strength settings. The previous madVR build got very slow when using high strength. The latest build should still lose some performance when turning up strength, but far less.
No, I'm saying that going from 3 to 4 previously absolutely killed performance, while now is far more affordable. Good job! :)

What do you want the rule to do?
I'm guessing generally you would want something like this:
if (scalingFactor.x >= 1.2) and (scalingFactor.y >= 1.2) "Profile 1"
else "Profile 2"

The subtitle margin changes with scale using XySubFilter, not with the internal mpc engine.
Example:

I'm using madvr 0.89.11 and XySubFilter 3.1.0.746...
Thanks!

The scaling factor rule don't work properly last I tried.

Worked fine for me. Most likely an error in your script. There's a little green check mark that comes up when it thinks everything is correct.

i actually do have a problem i can't seem to resolve on my own: for a few releases automatic refresh rate changing hasn't worked. it's not a big deal as the only thing it helps with is 25 fps (i have 50, 60, and 66 profiles in nvidia settings) which i don't watch often. all that happens is occasionally the screen will flicker after player close, if it happens at all
doesn't matter if i use dx9 or 11, fse or not, switch on playback start or fullscreen
win 8.1, gtx 970, 358.50 drivers, MPC-BE x64 1.4.5 787, madvr 89.11, lav 66
i don't want to nuke madvr settings because of how many profiles i have, but will if it's the only fix, i've been overwrite installing madvr since somewhere in late 87.x (whatever the first KCP x64 used)
followup question: what's a good rule of thumb for fresh installing, other than 'when weird stuff starts happening'?

I switched to the internal subtitle renderer in MPC-BE and all problems are gone.
