Its been long since any new version of MadVR came out once madshi started on with envy project. The developer could restart the development once again after making madVR a paid software. With Dolby Vision and HDR 10+ around , one really misses out madVR's continued development . Hope madshi takes up the project’s development once again or at least make it open source so that others can take over .

He released the most recent beta build 9 days ago and 2 builds 2 days before that as well.

He alternates back and forth between madVR and Envy development. He uses madVR as a testing ground for Envy dev.

Does anyone know what black output offset to put in st 2084 in the 3dlut for hdr to sdr? 50% 100%?

EDIT: seems I'm both smarter and stupider I thought.

TrueHD or DTS-HD MA seems to not work at 23fps or 24fps at all regardless of MadVR so the NVIDIA drivers must be broken?

Any advice?

----------------------------------------------

So went from GTX 970 => RTX 3070

Now if I use MadVR then as soon as I try to enter full screen mode with the "switch to matching display mode" e.g. 23hz TrueHD / DTS-HD MA audio breaks and is broken until I restart the PC.

If I disable MadVR then TrueHD and DTS-HD MA works fine.

There used to be no issues and my receiver correctly displayed TrueHD or DTS-HD MA signal passthrough.

Any advice?

And btw - I've been using MadVR for years and it's great :) so that's why I'm now asking how to resolve this issue, it's not a complaint. Thanks for the great filters.

So you're asking for a software-only version of Envy (that your hardware is probably not powerful enough to run). Based on Envy pricing, that would work out to about $3,000 a copy. :)

Be glad we've got madVR for free.

Although your price estimate speaks volume of your IQ levels wherein you took the liberty of extrapolating a hardware based solution pricing with software PC based solution , yet i must point out two things :(1) I am not "freebies-loader" like you and happily pay for all softwares including media center players and sound enhancers(2)For price estimation i would prefer it coming straight from the horse's mouth rather than a troll .

With a company betting everything on madVR, I doubt that this is ever gonna happen.
Hmm you r right in that inference

Do you remember after which beta, they started to expire? After 113 or later?

Started with v114, but madshi has also re-released older test builds (for comparisons) with the expiration (and the newer Envy-friendlier license) added, I know he did that at least with v112b for example so there exist expiring and not expiring versions of that build. Maybe he did it with other builds.

I reported a bug with madVR on Windows 11 where automatic display mode switching would invoke tablet mode. Turns out it was a Windows 11 bug and has been fixed in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.450 and 22622.450:

We fixed an issue that causes Windows to display tablet mode features for some devices that do not have touchscreens.

I also confirmed this as it would also happen with JRiver and nircmd with MPV.

I'm not sure how but I managed to enabled a bunch of extra HDR options and I now get some extra statistics when putting them on screen.

A couple of questions
1. The measured frame is the maximum brightness of any given pixel on screen for that frame?
2. tone map xxxnits means that that level of brightness mentioned above is mapped to that new value
3. What are the graphs on the right? The colour ones I guess it tells the distribution of colour - in this case a very bluish picture. What about the top one? Distribution of number of pixels vs their brightness? In this case, the max brightness on the image is measured at 700 nits but the graph is telling me there are only a few pixels at that brightness and that the majority of the pixels have a lower value?

Thanks!

I have weird issue with madvr. I can't watch hdr anymore. I am using potplayer and everytime I try to use madvr for hdr I get instant display driver crash and the driver display is disabled with dxgKrnl or something error and amd display driver has recovered but it never recover i lose signal and I need to restart rentable and disable and re-enable. I only happens with my Epson 9400 projector. anyone knows what the hell happened?? I tried windows 11 os one without the newest updates with different configuration. hdr works normally in games and using the normal potplayer hdr and in movies program of windows 11.. I am lost..... I tried 22.5.1 and 22.7.1 it is exactly the same. I tried the newest madvr version the same

I was using 113. is it some time bomb for this version? why would the projector crash instantly or it started happening after like 20 min into a movie and then it instant crash none stop. I can't understand. why would the TV work fine but the projector would crash none stop??

How do I fix this?? I can't watch HDR with MadVR on my projector, nothing changed!

EDIT : I reseted all the settings with 113 and just unselected all the trade quality fore performance and HDR Passthrough instead let MadVR decide, and now it works fine, but I have no idea which setting now cause that... to remind it happened on 2 Windows 11 on different SSD's but it's from the same image, but one is normal usage 24/7 and another one is not updated almost 2-3 months, only with latest 22.7.1 drivers.

IT'S NDU!
it crashes as soon I enable upscaling NDU how can I fix it?

i'm surprised that you can even switch between HDR passthrough and tone mapping using win 11. madVR is not working properly with win 11 or not at all.

if your GPU driver is failing try an older one. you are using an AMD card you should be used to this.
soon to be a year old: http://bugs.madshi.net/view.php?id=674

if NDU so i guess NGU is causing the crash well then don't use it.

HDR works fine for both my TV and Projector, issue was the projector HDMI Cable!! can't trust no other HDMI cable than the Zeskit. Aliexpress cables and in my country HDMI cables are totally BS. even though the projector is 2.0 and the cable is 2.1 5meters it worked fine till now, but it did cause AMD driver detection crash everytime I switched between TV and projector, replacing the HDMI to the best brand Zeskit 5 meters Ultra high speed works perfect.

looking at your link, why do you use 21.8.1 and using Exclusive Full-screen mode???? to fix the HDR mode use Windowed mode and update to the newest drivers AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Adrenalin 22.7.1 Optional. 620 MB. 7/26/2022

to sum it up, I'm using
Windows 11 x64 newest build and it works since the start
6900XT 22.7.1 worked also for all version before it
Potplayer newest version + LavFilters 76.0.1 set to D3D11 and Automatic not specific GPU - Exclusive mode disabled
MadVR 113 Exclusive mode disabled, Windowed mode only
Sometimes when opening potplayer after a restart then I need to switch to windowed full screen 2 times for HDR to actually go to HDR, but it is exactly one time.

If it still doesn't work reset MadVR to default settings and try again, if it does work see which setting caused it not to work.

AMD is pissing me off, I bought the HD FURY Vrroom and I can't use it because AMD drivers doesn't passthrough VRR! it is always Freesync and HDFURY can't display that!! when will they fix that! Only NVIDIA works fine with VRR and display VRR on the LG OLED CX TV when you disable AMD Freesync on the TV menu.

because the bug report is from that time. and you should read it.

and again think about that for a sec your GPU driver is crashing because you have a different cable.

what has AMD to do with VRRroom VRR support AMD just send a proper VRR signal if the VRRroom doesn't support then it doesn't support it nvidia and AMD VRR are technically the same but not as a signal.

the CX VRR is utterly broken anyway. more flicker plz on nvidia gsync certified and AMD freesync premium display.

MadVR is very good and Windows 11 is very bad — say "no" to Windows 11. Just say no.

Now this may be a little off topic for THE in-place to be for everyone interested in DVD conversion, but I'm looking at a 3rd retro TV series which to my brain looks "fake" and "like the actors are on a set" for the HD Bluray remaster vs SDTV/DVD version:

1. Start Trek: TNG (1987)
2. Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993)
3. Macgyver (1985)

All 3 of these look "funny" to me in their HD remasters. The lighting and set construction seems phony, like the backgrounds are made of cardboard or something. Something is really rubbing my brain the wrong way and I'm in search of a video processing solution to emulate the original crappy SD look.

For those of you playing at home you may recall earlier I found a pseudo solution with the following saved to a text file with .avs extension opened with MPC-HC:

DirectShowSource("MacGyver.mp4")
BicubicResize(704, 240)
BicubicResize(704, 528)

# then tag the video file with eg. [matrix=709] and [primaries=709] if the file was encoded with 709 matrix & primaries
# otherwise MadVR will decode with wrong SD colours — see MadVR's tips.txt file for more info

In the above example I'm downscaling to 240p as the SD master of MacGyver is super blurry, everything looks like a hazy dreamland or something.

But somehow this still isn't quite right & it's more than just resolution. I think it needs downscale to 480p + specialized blur kernel and/or DNR?

Comparisons
Scene 1: DVD/SDTV (https://i2.lensdump.com/i/1jKBbP.png), Bluray 240p (https://i3.lensdump.com/i/1jKQM1.png), Bluray 1080p (https://i1.lensdump.com/i/1jKd6K.png)

Note: I am well aware the HD remasters are superior in every technical way, so please don't come at me. Unfortunately it seems the human mind is not always aligned with technical superiority when it comes to art.

edit: after some more pixel peeping it seems the original SD master might have more filtering in the horizontal direction than the vertical. Halving the horizontal to 360x480 combined with MadVR noise reduction strength 3 seems to be a better match.

edit: seem to have a good result with 720x480 + MadVR DNR strength 3 + Gaussian blur 2x2 pre-resize (in MPC-HC shaders section)

sony doesn't follow freesync they use HDMI VRR only (last time i checked freesync was suppose to work). they are differences in protocol. there TV don't have to support gsync or freesync. for the end device is does not matter as long as it understands the signal but sending it is a different story.

OLED are in general broken in term of VRR i have not seen a test for the 2022 series but other have flicker issue in dark scene some more some less.

i know 22581 broke it but that doesn't mean it was the first version.
i assume 22000 just had duplicates on my system.
to be save you have to use win 10.

i didn't checked every version for this issue i even stop using win 11 by unrolling from the insider version. the issues got to big and can not be ignore anymore. it may actually work in the newest win 11 dev build.

at this time we sadly don't even know if this is a general issue or a combination of settings to trigger it.

btw. i assume the entire bug comes from the changes to the calibration system in win 11 and madVR ask for old information and get them wrong. but that's just a guess.

Damn, maybe I should just give up and try to enjoy the HD versions? I'm looking at S01E01 of Babylon 5 Bluray and that also looks to me like "actors on a set"

Another idea I had was to simply zoom the frame out to a smaller window with MPC-HC's zoom hotkeys, to simulate the smaller size of a CRT. The less I see the more it leaves to the imagination?

Those productions were just intended to be broadcast in SD. So when make up was done and sets were constructed, lots of small details were overlooked. In HD you clearly see that some alien appearance is make-up but back in 1987 they must have said "this is good enough, the imperfections won't be visible on TV".

Then FullHD arrived, the masters were nicely restored and here you have your "actors on a set" feeling.

MadVR is very good and Windows 11 is very bad — say "no" to Windows 11.I don't think it's the fault of one or the other, it's just a combination of Microsoft keeping pushing new features and way of making some stuff work because they need to or it will stagnate, GPU manufacturers changing stuff to keep up with those developments, and application developers not always updating as fast as needed to keep up with it.
There have been problems with madVR and Windows 10 in the past (render queue not filling up on 1803, crashes with some HDR test builds on old GPU drivers, HDR not switching correctly or getting stuck, etc.) and madshi wants to keep using the proprietary HDR APIs of the GPUs when Microsoft is clearly pushing for use of Windows' own, so at one point stuff is going to break. Those productions were just intended to be broadcast in SD. So when make up was done and sets were constructed, lots of small details were overlooked. While this is true, I'd still rather watch the remastered HD versions even if it means seeing small flaws, than watch 240p downscaled blurred stuff.
Those low def masters looked OK at the time because the displays of the time were also blurrier. Now watching them on a fixed pixel display is horrible.

I don't have any weed, just some old CBD oil thats past its use by date. However it seems that taking my glasses off helps.

That's another thing -- optometrists want to prescribe me lenses with 20/20 vision and I feel like that's seeing the world in too much detail. If foreground and background are all in razor sharp focus it feels like information overload sometimes. Some movies are like that where they don't use any depth of field and every scene feels like it's very flat, 2 dimensional and overly detailed.

Hi all.

Having some problems with madvr and my GPU with playback of videos that did not cause a problem previously with the same settings. GPU is a Gigabyte GeForce-RTX-2060-Windforce-6G-OC. CPU is an Intel i5 8600. I use MPC-BE with madvr as the selected renderer. HTPC has Windows 11 installed, ‘upgraded’ from Windows 10 a few months ago, possibly around the same time this problem started.

The problem is that the GPU fans are repeatedly speeding up, and slowing down, loudly, to the point that it interferes with the dialog on the TV. According to the performance stats on the PC, the GPU 3D performance is running at about 70% when MPC-BE and madvr are running, with, for example the following video:

https://bnz05pap002files.storage.live.com/y4mI6qJAqodAOepQuCnEVKMdv-qj0AxnwFvHATY2Kb6A7vu2B4F9XsczQw-IkkauMUlEYn0exZu79xUnV-Y7mc2jXRu95R68Xu2UVM_HDGvZhK0B3vOcx7oQjJ0aMyT3BmsvxnUwqK7WiQq4sxVdKDNFJ6qxRhCm_R2eW63wVN9Hf3F31nSCRfqLAnAuFInjmXv?width=808&height=539&cropmode=none

Performance Stats

https://bnz05pap002files.storage.live.com/y4mHxokRIKra8WjxGjKzHDnD__rHb_J09ghKQnN4YwIAXoHiYiCetpsYl32FVKvgr3TIGwwpLDyGwPhGJua28znoydaR9Mtzm0xQ3sYKBvWVIzDZhlwKwSxlvpJ4X2HmqVj388cIaLHG93AMV_ztcWG5fmf7Vms9WcRZ3kHslukM3Rua2lhIHiV-XxttN_iJVIS?width=1080&height=1440&cropmode=none

Temperature goes up to about 80degrees, the fan ramps up to full speed, the temp drops a little, the fan slows. Temp rises and fan speeds up, repeatedly. Sometimes, the video will freeze while this is going on and the frame render rate goes from the usual 14-15ms to over 35ms.

With the same video, 3D performance sits at around 15-20% with MBC-BE and the MPC Video Renderer, and in VLC player.

While I don’t have previous performance stats, fan speed has never been an issue before. I assume therefore that performance % and heat have been lower. I have taken the GPU and examined it and there is no dust present. The fans are clean and unobstructed with a good flow of air.

I see that some have been having problems with HDR and Windows 11, but I could not see any reports in the thread on madvr performance hits due to Windows 11.

Attached below are the stats. The settings have not changed in a year or two and have performed very well up to now.

https://bnz05pap002files.storage.live.com/y4mar27gKf-ZiNVUirSmeoJkAmPrVdR4a2V4hfP6ra_ATdCCPexpk-fzHjskVQ6JJxz18JKZgTCCq2dtxJvPe3s0XkM92DTPWxUuhUZsEyELKw4fKvcRwIRI2nYyn0jpilxtXDSY3IxX-9VsE8-G_ifHanNIk0nFVep6XCh4JVn65IfAhfKtRNxsR216ydF2GbZ?width=1080&height=1440&cropmode=none

Appreciate any ideas what might be going on here. Is it known issue with Windows 11? Are there any particular parameters that might need tweaking to reduce the gpu heating up but limiting loss in video quality in Windows 11? Do I need a new gpu? 😊

Cheers,

Allan

With the same video, 3D performance sits at around 15-20% with MBC-BE and the MPC Video Renderer, and in VLC player.

The % value isn't very meaningful as it's a function of the current clock speed which varies. Just now I played a 1080p50 video with my 1070 decoding using DXVA2-copyback, and GPU usage starts at around 15%, then after about 20 seconds of playback it will suddenly spike to 45% and stay there, because GPU has downclocked from 1900mhz to 600mhz.

But looking at the stuff you posted I'm betting the GPU temp probably is higher with MadVR so it looks like you probably do have an issue from where I'm sitting. If the temp is significantly lower with MPC Video Renderer and VLC, then that would confirm it. Also useful to measure power consumption with a watt meter.

Although it's possible that MadVR is only making your GPU work a little bit harder and its fan curve could be exacerbating the issue by letting it get hotter before spinning up, and you just happen to be bouncing around at that threshold, in which case you can use a custom fan curve to dial it out. My 1070 (EVGA) fan has an annoying whine at 25% & 35% speeds which I had to dial out manually:

https://i.ibb.co/FgF2Zwz/fancurve.png

But I'm not confident this is the problem in your case, so try fiddling with rendering options like DX11 vs DX9 and different scaling algorithm to try and isolate a culprit.

edit: random comment on the subject of noise -- recently got these (https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20220816205036&SearchText=shock-proof+3.5+hard+disk&spm=a2g0o.home.1000002.0) mounts which are incredible for eliminating HDD hum and click.

Thanks for that flossy_cake. I'll check out the fan curve and fiddle with the rendering options. I have played with the chroma upscaling settings (as I understand it can be a bit of a hog of GPU processing capacity), reducing from NGU to to Jinc but temps still seemed to get quite high. Will look into further. Just can't explain why I have been enjoying faultless performance for nearly 2 years with the system and settings as it is, apart from the 'upgrade' to Win 11. Cheers.

it has to de deinterlaced if it is 25 at the start.

1080p on a blu ray is also way 50i even when it is 25. because it is always interlaced or at lest fake interlaced.

Both seem to be rendering at 50fps - if I read the stats correctly. I should note I only mentioned VLC and MPC Video Renderer performance to demonstrate that there is some processing in madvr that, although not an issue in the past is now causing the gpu to overheat and the fan to ramp up. Of course, madvr is also doing a lot of other processing. :-)

This is not mediainfo, this is mediainfo GUI, you need to show all properties to see it. But you video says source is 50.000 fps, which is how interlaced video must be shown when deinterlaced (so on progressive screen), 25 fields when deinterlaced are 50 frames, not 25 frames, as Youtube does by mistake.

As huhn said it's bad to force disable deinterlacing. If a Blu-ray is interlaced it's usually for a good reason. You should create profiles in your madVR config, like this:if deintFps < 31 "LFR"
else "HFR"then adjust settings in the HFR profile for lower GPU usage until you have no dropped frames even with 50/60 fps content.

With a bit more digging I see that el Filou has already done some work on this exact issue for another member of the forum. I shall give it a whirl over the weekend. Thank you sir.

25 fields when deinterlaced are 50 frames, not 25 frames, as Youtube does by mistake.
one is 25p the other is 50i which need 2 times the processing power.

I used to refer to it as 50i but nowdays I refer to it as 25i -- I feel it's more consistent with the rest of the nomenclature.

In my mind, 25i is the same as 25p insofar as the storage format still contains 25 images of 1920x1080, but just with a header flag to notify that odd and even lines could potentially contain separate images. It's then up to the decoder or renderer to "pick out" the odd and even lines and determine the optimal way to display it, using things like cadence detection.

I will perform some tests with 1080i25 content at various cadences on GTX 1070 to see if it really does require 2 times the processing power. I suspect for simple weave or bob deinterlacing that it should cost barely anything. The content in question (The Vigil TV series) would be 2:2 cadence so it should only require weave deinterlacing, unless it has a bunch of "bad edits" where the field order swaps on scene splices.

If MadVR is doing the deinterlacing then as huhn mentioned before it's just handing the deinterlacing off to the GPU which may have dedicated low level deinterlacing circuits to do it very cheaply. I haven't noticed high GPU usage on interlaced content but I will have to check some more files. I think GPU usage should only be an issue if manually implementing per-pixel de-interlacing in a custom pixel shader.

My current setup is to have deinterlacing disabled in both LAV Video Decoder and MadVR, and then for files that I know are interlaced, manually tag them with the optimal method: either [deint=film] for 2:2/3:2 content, or [deint=video] for 1:1/unknown. This activates MadVR deinterlacing, which supposedly just tells the GPU driver to use the respective method (both AMD and Nvidia driver API support "film" and "video" modes of deinterlacing, apparently). As huhn mentioned previously, MadVR's "automatic" deinterlacing doesn't work and just defaults to "video" mode regardless of the cadence.

Test clip 1: 1080i25, 1:1 cadence (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AMmHwIfJrJAPb1Uv17tcGDVy_576kCZf/view?usp=sharing)
Test clip 2: 1080i25, 2:2 cadence (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ldZprCfYw2D6ZUCVXGkQXSNP9q-dCByG/view?usp=sharing)

The file names are already tagged with the appropriate deinterlacing method, so you shouldn't have to set anything in MadVR's settings. Ctrl+J should report "deinterlacing on".

On GTX 1070 with clock forced to max in NVCP ("max performance" for mpc-hc64.exe) I'm getting 7% and 5% GPU usage on those test clips. The 1:1 clip is presented correctly at 50p with a new frame every 20ms without mice teeth / combing artefacts. Deinterlacing on/off and type can be toggled in realtime via MadVR hotkeys.

Random observation: I was surprised to find that video mode deinterlacing on AMD & Nvidia cards works fine with 2:2 cadence but looks bad with 3:2 cadence -- it has this constant line twitter, kind of like slow motion bob deinterlacing flicker.

I'm trying to think of why, and the best theory I can come up with is that 3:2 cadence sort of has this sub-cadence going on with sections of 2:2:2 which may be confusing the de-interlacer somehow:

Top field: A AB CDE EF GHI IJ KLM MN OPQ Q
Bottom field: A BC CDE FG GHI JK KLM NO OPQ
Sub-cadence: 222 222 222 222
Weaveable? No Yes No Yes No Yes No Yes

Random observation with 1080i25 1:1: both AMD and Nvidia seem to think sections of the red and white curbs at the bottom are weaveable:
