Yeah, if you have to lower the brightness on every video then you'd probably be better off adjusting your display.
As far as I know the only way to apply the setting every time is to tag individual videos, or the directory containing the files (e.g. in case you have a series of videos that all need the same adjustment). Changing the filenames this way isn't pretty to look at, but it works.

I am not sure if this is a MadVR issue or (more likely) an issue with my GPU (Nvidia 950). I'm trying out HEVC UHD demos (hardware decoding) and at specific points the queues just drop to 0 and I get a massive amount of dropped frames. It happens at the same points every time. Increasing queue sizes helped a little, and also pausing for a second and then unpausing can sometimes refill the queues. Could this be a GPU memory issue? (only has 2gb). Or maybe something else? Really not sure what could cause it. 1080p and lower all play perfectly.

Your GPU most likely can't decode frames fast enough.
Look at the rendering frame times in the OSD (Ctrl+J) and see if the rendering/total processing time is close to or greater than the content's frame duration (24 fps would be 41.6ms).
I have a 950 myself and it can do everything but decode 60fps UHD HEVC and remap HDR to SDR at the same time. Render times shoot up higher than the frame duration.
On a related note, a GT 1030 is not fast enough to decode 24fps UHD HEVC and handle HDR (either passing it directly or remapping it to SDR with a shader). If anyone is considering it, don't bother.

EDIT: I see your average processing time is ~23 ms. 50i video deinterlaces to 50 fps, not 25, so it means 20 ms per frame. I think it's likely your GPU has no processing resources left to deinterlace in addition to madVR processing. I know Radeons at some point had a 'feature' that disabled some video processing options if the GPU was maxxed out, I don't know much about NVIDIA GPUs yet but could it be that's what happening?

Also I highly doubt that lack of processing power would result in deinterlacing not working at all, it would result in framedrops.

It was actually a panning shot of the newsroom, the camera was moving and it didn't show any artefact. Trust me, I've been watching TV on a PC for years, I recognize interlace combing when I see it. ;)
Did you try EVR or EVR custom in ProgDVB just to check if deinterlacing works with it? That could help narrow down the problem.

Whenever my TVs display gets turned "off" after Windows power manager kicks in if I attempt playback the audio plays as normal but madVR displays only a frame or few, I have to rewind or forward for madVR to continue as normal.
Anyone else experience this on graphics other than Nvidia? Using W10.

How do I enable the stats display of each processing filter under rendering in the CTRL+J OSD? (as I see it on some screencaps)
I tried a search but couldn't find it. I also try enabling the debug mode using the batch script and that didn't work.

don't use the debug version of madVR. it just replaced the madVR version with a debug version that creates a log on your desktop which multiply GB big.
for the advanced render steps option you need to created a new file or folder in the madVR folder with the name "showrendersteps".
don't use this for playback and use this to judge performance.
it can lower performance.

How can you tell?
The source really is native 50i, to confirm here is a second screenshot I made of today's broadcast with LAV forced to weave (the 'Disabled (Progressive)' deinterlacing setting): https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2r1Nd4XdRcbYUh6T3B3d3ltQW8
If you zoom in, in the background of the newsroom on the pillars and the screens hanging off them you can see the combing interlace effect.
I'll try getting screens this weekend of sport programming using madVR and deinterlacing on/off to provide another compare.

How can you tell?
If deinterlacing is actually on, there is a "dxva queue" in the OSD, as well as a "dxva" entry in the "stats" section.
Try playing a interlaced file where it should definitely be working.

Unfortunately not. Render times stay around 25ms but the queues just empty at certain points, so I'm thinking either decoder can't keep up or I'm out of vram.

between lav settings of hw decoding: no hw decoding through dxva, which of them the "proper/right way" for madvr?
because i've got trouble when using sw decoder and somehow my gpu got idle and playback got heavy framedrops. the only work around with this that i can think of is changing nvidia setting to maximize performance instead of optimal (default)

Odd, I can play "The_World_in_HDR_in_4K_HDR10.mkv" downloaded from that link on my Titan XP (it was at 2038MHz).
This was the OSD during the final credits after watching the entire video, reset right after playback started.

First reset the settings. That will undo all silly performance killing changes that you may have made, like supersampling.
Press Ctrl+J to display the OSD. Look at the details that are shown and first check if the algorithms that are used match with what you expect.
You can show extra details by creating an empty folder called ShowRenderSteps in the installation folder of MadVR.
Post a screenshot if you need help.

old news and it largely advantage anime related stuff, since waifu2x is based on the normal srcnn. For irl content it produces way less impressive results.
There is also ESCPN or VESCPN specifically designed for video upscaling. But there are either patent issues or knowledge issues on madashis site, so an implementation is very unlikely.
If you look for an very good upscaler (albeit a specialized one) than there is enhancenet https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.07919 , which might be feasible in the future. But now it is not realtime

Tried resetting everything to default but performance was even worse lol. And there are no sillyerformance killing changes in my profiles :-)
The weird thing is, for me, when the queues just drop, pausing the video and letting the queues refill and then unpausing it fixes it (until the next time they drop). If i dont pause and then unpause the queues stay empty and continues dropping gazillions of frames infinitely (well ok to the end of the video). I've even made changes so that render times stay between 10-15ms so lots of headroom. So i'm stumped.

Even running a torture test heat doesn't pass 70. I'll check advanced render steps a bit later, hopefully that will give more of a clue

If you are running out of VRAM, try with minimum queues. Could easily check that with GPU-Z running same time as watching.

Hey, I just found out this week end that to be able to use the HDR metadata passthru with MPC-HC, I have to use the 32bit version. I have always used the 64bit... this might have been tell before in this thread and I've misse it probably...
anyway since the switch, I have been able to test out both the Nvidia API as well as the Windows 10 API and both work pretty well. On one occasion the HDR flag stayed up after exiting the movie and I couln't find any way to reset it exept rebooting my PC. But overall , works nicely.

When playing a source video in DXVA2 copy-back mode with BT.2020 matrix & primaries and passthrough HDR, Mad-VR says "HDR 1000 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3".
Should I select DCI or BT.2020 in my TV (X850C) menu settings? With BT.2020 enabled the colors look deeper without oversaturation.
Is there a setting in MadVR to disable the BT.2020 -> DCI-P3 conversion (DXVA2 native mode, perhaps?)

When playing a source video in DXVA2 copy-back mode with BT.2020 matrix & primaries and passthrough HDR, Mad-VR says "HDR 1000 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3".
This line only informs you of the actual used colorspace inside the stream. Its always contained in a BT.2020 container, however BT.2020 covers a huge range of colors which isn't fully used by anything so far (nor can TVs fully reproduce it). So HDR contains metadata that informs the player about the actually used colorspace - in this case thats DCI-P3, in a BT.2020 container.
So that line is just informationl.

You should select whatever you set in madVR under devices -> <device> -> calibration. Those settings have to match (if you're not calibrating manually, set it to display is already calibrated and select BT.2020 or DCI-P3 in the box below)
At this point in time, perhaps using DCI-P3 would be best, although BT.2020 would also work (but if you're not using 10-bit output, it may cause a bit of loss).

When I play "MP4-2c\Basic Settings\3-White Clipping.mp4" what I see on the screen matches what the video says: 235 and higher are completely white, while 230-234 are slightly gray (refer to the image), but shouldn't I see whole range up to 253?
I tried checking colors in Paint and 230 column is actually 249 white, while 234 column is 254 white. Why is this considered to be correct output when colors are incorrect?
Similar issue with "1-Black Clipping.mp4" file - dark colors are darker than the number says.

On a properly calibrated screen and playback chain, you should not see values above 235 or below 16.
Note that when you take a screenshot of the video, it is already after various levels of processing, and the values don't match the actual values in the video.
