This has been spanning on for the past couple of pages but can anyone give a short run down on what problems madVR has with windows 10?
So far, it sounds like nnedi3 still doesn't work on nvidia cards due to missing opencl implementation and something about d3d9 interop although I don't know what effects that has on madVR.

Nvidia removed the opencl to dxd9 interop function in the newer drivers for Windows 10 so madVR's implementation of NNEDI3 no longer works.

The two issues are actually the same issue, only NNEDI3 is affected.

is there a suggestion for a good noise reduction in mpc-hc?

Since i upscale my files to my 4k screen the noise increased a lot and madvr doesnt have noise reduction options. So what to use for nr?

Switched back to Win 7 and catalyst 14.12. But noticed some problems with madvr 0.88.21.

watched a movie yesterday and while playing it in fullscreen exclusive mode (D3D11, 10 Bit) the screen suddenly went black. Sound and movie seemed to play on, but no picture. Had to exit fse to windowed and switched back to fse, that fixed it. Was the second time i had this strange bug.

Today I tried to switche back to D3D9, 8 Bit mode, but can't get a picture in fse. Don't know why. When I got some time i will try to switch back to 0.88.16 or 0.87.21 and see if it still exists.

btw: should windowed overlay mode work on AMD cards? when I select it, it shows: "windowed overlay is not supported"

Sorry to report that I still get unreported dropped frames with 0.88.16.

So I had to revert to 0.87.21. Dropped frames seem to be gone for good, I'll report if it was not the case.

Madshi, are you able to reproduce these issues with 0.88.x that some of us AMD users are experiencing?

Do you know what could cause these unreported dropped frames?

Please let us know if you need any more information to fix these. MadVR has always given me perfect perfect playback until 0.88.x

This is using 14.12 catalyst and D3D9 without FSE.

I mostly play blurays, so the only enhancements are chroma upscaling (NNEDI3 32) and debanding (high/high). I'm well under 25ms per frame, so far from any limit to cause frame drops at 23.976hz.

Probably this was already answered here multiple times, but I always wanted to know about it.

How madVR algorithms compare to the "filters" and sharpening options built-in the new TVs?

Do you use just madVR sharpening and disable all the TV features? Or do you use both (madVR + TV sharpening) ?

Oh my god I am so happy right now, after trying different drivers and trying everything except reinstall Windows 10 I finally got rid of the mysterious dropped frames.

All I had to do was to disable fullscreen exclusive mode. If someone saw my previous post, I tried EVR instead of madvr but this didn't get rid of the mysterious dropped frames so I will just assume it uses something similar to fullscreen exclusive mode.

In any case, I can finally watch some movies and TV shows again.

No, windowed overlay is only supported by Nvidia and Intel.

Some pixel shadera general questions, do mpc-hcs pixel shader work in combination with madvr?

a general questions, do mpc-hcs pixel shader work in combination with madvr?yeap (and I believe that it's the only way to run custom shaders in madVR).

Hi there,

I'd like to report a bug, I will try to reproduce it before reporting on the bugtracker.

I have two monitors always connected to a GeForce 460. A third device - a projector - is connected to the HDMI output. When I turn the projector on, my secondary monitor disconnects since the card only supports two monitors simultaneously.

What happened tonight, I wanted to load a 3Dlut file but when pressing APPLY I could not see any difference.

After a while I realised that my projector was in fact affected by my secondary monitor's settings. So I ended up setting a 3Dlut to my secondary monitor instead. When pressing APPLY I could see the colours changing.

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10, could that be the issue? I know this OS is not perfect at the moment.

I will try to replicate the problem, is there anything I can do to provide more useful information?
Thanks
Tony

Did you turn on the projector after you started madVR?

Hi,
Mpc-hc was opened and the file pre-loaded but not playing. I then turn the projector on and played the file. I've done this before and never noticed this behavior, madvr would always recognise the monitor I was playing on.
I'll try again opening Mpc-hc after the projector had been switched on.
Thanks

I have a bit of an ask and of course its down to madshi. Would it be possible to have two separate madvr threads in the forum, one for windows 8/10 only and another for windows 7 down? Its getting a little confusing to try and read through what bugs are affecting what OS these days and it appears a lot of what is being reported is not related directly to madvr bugs.

In my view those with windows 10 issues should go back to windows 7 if they have that option open to them still.

What's going on?

There are some speculations about the future of madVR.
Some people said that madVR would become a paid software or that madshi is on vacation.
Other people even said that madshi was dead and will be replaced by his evil twin. :D

We are not accustomed to not see a new madVR release each week. ;)

What are you talking about ? Everytime madshi disappear (even for months), he eventually comes back with lot of new stuff for madVR.

Yeah, madVR tends to get updated in bursts. Lots of activity for a few weeks, then little to no activity for a while, then a lot of activity again. My guess is madshi sets aside some time from paid work every now and then to focus almost exclusively on madVR. Either way the current lack of activity is nothing to worry about (madshi has even posted here recently), it's just a bit more frustrating due to the release of Windows 10.

So much speculation. I feel like I'm in high school again sitting next those 3 or 4 girls that constantly gossip about inane fluffery.

As far as people who have switched to Windows 10 and are having issues. Windows 10 is a "released" OS. Those of us who have switched should not be pushed aside because it is a new OS. Windows 10 is here to stay and it will eventually have to be dealt with, whether people who have not switched want it to be or not. It is a "free" (LOL) upgrade so more people than not are going to jump on that bandwagon. I know madshi has not said anything about Windows 10 one way or another and I am reasonable sure that he is aware of the issues and intends to address them. I just wish people would quit trying to convince madshi or who ever to put it on the back burner.

Last night I got rid of Windows 10 and went back to my 8.1 setup and drivers. NNEDI3 is now running happily on my GTX770 once again.

There's nothing in Win 10 I particularly need, and I don't like how much it phones home to Microsoft, so I think I'll stick with 8.1 and older Nvidia drivers for awhile. I watch a lot of old SD movies, so doubling is very important to me.

Has the idea of implementing a delay between refresh rate switch and playback start ever been considered? Kodi handles it to great effect.

you know there is a kodi DSPlayer version so this should work there with madVR. so with other words the player is doing it.

I`ve heard a lot of sh*t about those "caaling home" stuff in windows 10. basically they almost want to meet us and thats disgusting. They think the common people needs microsoft softwares?? They dont know the existance of linux and linux distros??? madvr works like a charm with all linux distros i used.

I will wait 1/2 years before change to windows 10 from my windows 8.1. And if they remove the updates from 8.1 i will go linux FOREVAAAAAA :x

Really? How?
I haven't known this. Can you give a short setup instruction for that? I'd like to try it out.
(I'm using Ubuntu otherwise, and SMPlayer on it, just really rearly, I basically only keep Win for MadVR :) )
Thanks

You could probably use it in wine but I wouldn't classify that as works like a charm.

You could probably use it in wine but I wouldn't classify that as works like a charm. Why? WINE is not an emulator, so there is no performance loss. Unless it uses something WINE doesn't support.

Of course, it's way easier to just use mpv+scripts+shaders.

Because I doubt they have sufficient dx9 implementation. At least for DXVA and stuff madvr uses.

Things like madVR are carefully tuned for the intricate details of how DirectX interacts with various hardware, a generic translation to OpenGL with WINE will definitely cost you performance, and lots of it.

I suppose with luck FSE could run okish in some way, but there will probably be many bugs regarding composition in windowed/borderless mode etc.

you know there is a kodi DSPlayer version so this should work there with madVR. so with other words the player is doing it.
Not if you decide to let madVR handle the switch, which is advised as more precise than Kodi's method.

I have tried out even telnet with all the 3 ports that are mentioned in the manual, but still nothing (mpc-hc is running, and a video is playing, lan access is enabled):
telnet 192.168.1.50 37612

How should it work? :)
I didn't manage to figure it out, but I found a workaround using mpc-hc built-in cgi feature, if anybody is interested: http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1735591&postcount=2164

Madshi, can you add a new keyboard shortcut for toggling (enable/disable) image doubling? (it would be nice if it could remember its state)
Thanks

Curious on what is up here:
I recently bought a new cpu/mobo, which in terms of benchmarks yields about double synthetic results, but when it comes to madvr I'm overall getting worse performance...
I7 920 2.6 to i5 4690k@4.4ghz

Before I was able to use image doubling > super xbr with super-xbr chroma upscaling and jinc/lanczos everything else.

Now I cant even use image doubling or I'll get 50ish rendering speeds. I AM upscaling to 4k, so it is obviously harder then 1080p, but I could do it before and not now.

I am using the latest madvr release, and the latest mpc-BE release.(32 bit cuz 64 bit literally wont launch for me...)
Nvidia latest driver, gtx 970.
The dx11 mode option also crashes the player now, which might be the issue...

That sounds like a chipset, GPU, or other driver problem, I assume you do not have any monitors plunged into the motherboard's video ports? ;)

It is most likely unrelated to madVR.

you can't run mpc-be x64? that sounds like a serious issue with your system.

Probably software problem. CPU upgrade won't impact madvr performance in most case though.

If I can't use NNEDI3 as for the moment in windows 10 .

What would be the other suggestion for Chroma upscaling, image downscaling, image doubling, image upscaling ?

for the moment my guess and from reading other postings the best one with image quality is

Chroma upscaling - Jinc + AR
Image Downscaling - Lanczos + AR ( Should I need AR and SLL ? I read here that it's not needed ) http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1692401&postcount=22
Image doubling - I have no idea what does what I am lost in this one. does NNEDI3 work here or not at all ? Should I use NEDI instead with more neurons ? only on LUMA or anything else will improve performance on 720p ?
Image Upscaling - Jinc + AR - does it need AR ? Does this guide explain this and all else ? http://wiki.mikejung.biz/MadVR#madVR_Overview in a good way or some things aren't right ?

I am truly trying to read but there is no way I can possibly know I am comparing the right way and doing the right thing. I want maximum quality for 720p and 1080p.

I can't select taps with this options, I don't know why either.

I don't like the image quality , at least I don't really know what should be better. Chroma Upscaling NNEDI3 really had a difference in 1080p and 720p. I have no idea why you keep saying it's not, I've seen it. I can't find any guide to show me what is better comparison to the NNEDI3 because if it's by quality order means NNEDI3 is last is highest then Nedi would be better than Jinc and so super-xbr and Bilatreal.

How is NNEDI3 vs Nedi , Super-xbr ? it seems they are relative with their stats in the madvr when you select them. ( Sharpness , hide source artifacts etc )

Hi. I'm looking to madvr profiling. Does exist a switch that allow to enable a profile if the laptop is running with ac plugged or battery? I'd like to set a lighter profile when I'm running on battery only.

jinc 4 and 8 have been removed because they are pretty bad. same for lanczos 8.

first of all it doesn't matter what a guide says you have to find what looks best for you there a reason this forum doesn't allow to ask for the best because there is no answer.

do your self a favor and didn't read http://wiki.mikejung.biz/MadVR#madVR_Overview

i don't know who write this but he is missing a lot of points and the part of DSR is just that i guess...

in the end the guide should be your eyes.

I've found my best which is NNEDI3 , but it doesn't work, as a first alternative if someone know from their tests the quality of NNEDI3 can be reached from using from other thing then this is what I want to use. if you say that NNEDI3 is same as something else that what would be easier to use it ? the question is what about upscaling image and not just chroma.

Do the "right" settings depend on the output device? Can I use the LCD monitor to find the best settings if I watch movies on the projector?

in theory when the picture is nearly untouched on both. reality looks different.

and screen size/seating distance is different too.

i wouldn't do it this way

New Nvidia drivers out today, one set for Win 10 and another for the other Windows versions. I'm back on Win 8.1 now, what are the chances the new driver will break NNEDI3 the way it's broken in Win 10? Or is that strictly a Win 10 problem?

NNEDI3 still not working in the latest nvidia driver v355.82 Maybe madashi may want to take a look on how it was implemented in MPDN

For those wanting to compare the different scaling options in madVR, refer to this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1730855#post1730855) post by madshi. This is strictly for image upscaling but you can use it as a guide for picking the chroma upscaling option as well. I personally can't see a difference between chroma upscaling settings so I've set that to bilateral (uses the luma channel as a guide) or bicubic75 in the past.

Is it possible to optimize BD rips specifically for madVR? madVR is good at dithering and de-banding and whatever else. Is there a way to use that to compress rips even further without quality loss? I am talking about specific quality settings that can be reduced/lowered/compromised SPECIFICALLY because madVR can "offset" them if you know what I'm saying. That means its not just about lowering bit-rate.

I heard of some professionals creating small HQ rips with excellent quality, often beating higher bit-rate quality rips of much bigger size. These pro's do use advanced settings when creating rips and I THINK they adjust settings per-film, depending on content.

I don't think this is the place to be posting this. MadVR could offset some damage done by low bitrate of course but you're still going to lose detail. This really is a trial and error test on your part.

I think you've misunderstood madshi's notation.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\madshi\madVR\OpenCL\forceVendor REG_SZ "nVidia"

This means to add a 'forceVendor' String (REG_SZ) with a value of 'nVidia' at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\madshi\madVR\OpenCL , not a key.

Hi, :helpful:
I tried this method, but it didn't work. Nothing like "Geforce GTX 960M" showed up. How do I make madvr use the 960M instead of HD4600?
(W10 64, newest driver for both GPU, Jinc3 & xbr).
Thanks in advance!
