The default used to be 400. That is very bright for a SDR monitor, my last SDR calibration was at 103 nits for optimal dark room viewing but I like madVR set to 200 more than 120.
Yeah me too, was a good choice on madshi's part.
No they do not and you couldn't trust them if they did. Also the brightness setting directly controls this so everyone would have to have the screen set to 100% for it to be accurate
That's a shame, having something dynamic like this that could work with built in ambient light sensors would be nice.

What does it mean with MKV 4K HDR movie
D3D11 (10bit)
P010, 10 bit, 4:2:0 (DXVA11)
movie 3840x2160, 16:9
matrix BT.2020 (says upstream)
primaries BT.2020 (says upstream)
HDR 4000 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3
limited range (says upstream)
. that means the movie uses Color Gamut Wide ? and I need to change my TV color gamut to Wide or keep it on Normal ? it is so confusing . when do I need to use Normal and WIDE ?
I have LG OLED C6 TV , and I can't decide what that means. is there simple rule or simple explanation ?

I don't use FSE except for 3D, so I only did quick tests but in 4K23 everything played fine (I tested FHD and UHD content) with FSE enabled. I always have a black screen on my PJ when switching refresh rates, so you'll need someone else to confirm that bug.
3D still needs FSE here (it works otherwise but although the PJ reports 1080pFP and MadVR reports 3D, it's only 2D. I know some people don't need FSE even for 3D but here I've never been able to achieve that.
No problem with FSE enabled for 3D, except that I have a dropped frame every 3-5mn as it's not possible to set 1080p23FP separately when creating a custom frame, and for some reason WMC (I use MyMovies with WMC 8.8.1 as a front end) is windowed when I stop playback, but that has nothing to do with MadVR. I only have to maximise the window to make it full screen again.
Thanks, thats really useful information, I was about to have another go at my GTX 1050 but if there are occasions where FSE is needed for NVIDIA cards as well, and you are dropping frames on 3D then this is a no go for me.
My AMD card is now Rock solid with FSE now i've found the bug that was causing my problems, as stated if I drop my desktop to 1080p before I run 3D I have no issues at all, no crashes or frame drops as AMD cards can do 23.976 natively.
HDR also works fine, looks great.
As it stands now i've not had a PC crash or hang in KODI DS or MPC for 24 hours, you have no idea how happy this makes me feel.
NVIDIA users with the black screen issue, do you only get it with 1080p material on 4k screens?, if so its the same buy that causes AMD cards to completely hang the system.

Use F5 in MPC-BE or MPC-HC. (Also there's a screenshot submenu in MadVR config.)

it depends on what you tell madVR about your display.
with passthrough it is most likely assume your TV will handle BT 2020 and will use that automaticly.
but it all comes down to your settings under calibration

depends on your video player for MPC-hc is is F5. unlike print screen it should "always" work.

Yes, but I don't know which setting the TV should use.
Color Gamut Normal or Wide ? because the movie is HDR so that mean it should be Normal ? when do I need to use Wide then ?
The question is what is the proper way to use, because the both look different , Wide have more color and Normal doesn't, the question is if it's correct for this

i don't know what setting you are using and i don't know how dumb your screen is.
if there is an auto option use it.
or force wide and prey it is assuming BT 2020 input and set the madVR output to bt 2020.
without a colorimeter and some test no ones knows for sure.

Normal is Auto on the LG OLEDC6 series
Auto is Auto on the LG OLEDC7 Series
so even if it says DCI-P3 which suppose to be WIDE to always use Normal/Auto ?

without a colorimeter give auto a try.
so if the screen is not total dumb it will use wide for HDR and normal for none HDR.

Auto seems to work on my C7, it uses Wide for HDR/BT.2020/DCI-P3 and Normal for SDR/BT.709.
I have mine calibrated using Wide, madVR does the conversion of BT.709 to DCI-P3. I use a 3DLUT but if you don't have a meter setting "This display is already calibrated to DCI-P3" and setting the TV to Wide looks very similar.

(Sorry if this is a bit off-topic) Asmodian, I also have the C7, and I cannot seem to get the SDR 3DLUT's gamma quite right. I have a feeling this is due to ASBL and IR affecting the low end. How do you deal with that? I've been using 10% windows with an all black background, which seems to prevent ABL from kicking in. In DisplayCAL, the only thing I change from madVR defaults is a custom black point of 0.0001 (the lowest possible). Am I missing anything? Do you disable ASBL in the service menu? I'm trying to avoid that.

I am actually using Calman 2017 (it integrates with madVR very well) but I also need to keep a windowed video playing to keep the TV from going into low power mode. Even with power management disabled and at OLED Brightness at 18/100 it dims in 60sec if the power level does not change enough and there are points in the sequence of patches that don't change power enough for too long. I did do a very long calibration once (25h) and saw image retention from the title bars of the windows for madTPG and Calman but after a pixel refresh overnight my screen was fine.

On the C6 I have only Wide , Extended , Normal. the normal is same as Auto in C7 . so I guess I choose this. checking again with Life of Pi the water looked way too blueish so it was not correct with Wide.
I don't have any calibration device so I can only go with this display is not calibrated and let MadVR HDR passthrough selected. I just wanted to understand what does it mean this line
HDR 4000 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3
It does some kind of conversion ? why it is not just Bt.2020 or DCI-P3 ? why is there arrows pointing to DCI-P3 . I can't understand this.
Asmodian
14th December 2017, 04:23
BT.2020 is too wide for any display so I assume the BT.2020 YCbCr values are converted to DCI-P3 RGB values.
Measuring the gamut with an i1d3: Wide on the C7 is DCI-P3 (a little smaller than it should be but close), Extended is BT.709 (a little wider than it should be but close), and Auto switches between the two depending on the content.

I'm sure it's not memory because everything else works fine, games and such. it's just HDR movies , I think this movie specific. for example I don't have issue with Fifty Shades Darker 2017
I tried other HDMI cable, exactly the same all the times the same white spots .
I tried other media player MPC-HC instead Potplayer.
I tried MadVR 0.92.9
I tried DXVA2 copy back instead D3D11

Hi,
I have two monitors, when I minimize MPC-HC/MPC-BE or PotPlayer (no issue with Zoom Player), the playback pause for a few seconds, and pause again when I restore the player, sometimes the playback never resume and I have to kill the player. I noticed this always and only happen when I use the player on the monitor I place to the right in "Select and rearrange displays", no matter which monitor I select to be the main, no matter which monitor I put to the right. I can minimize/restore just fine on the monitor I place the the left. This happen only when I use MADVR as video renderer.
I'm using Windows 10, but same problem on Windows 7 or 8.1 when I tried a few weeks ago, I tried severals drivers versions, dozens of MADVR versions, dozens of MPC-HC versions... I tried pretty much everything I could setting up in MADVR options, it doesnt help. I notice the problem get worst when I use DXVA, the playback pause much longer when I minimize or restore the player.
The two monitors I have have different resolution:
1) 1920x1080 60hz
2) 1360x768 60hz

NOTES for 4K AMD users - after using my machine for a few days I can confirm its rock stable, 3D MVC is working 100% of the time, as is HDR, no issues at all with black screens or PC freezing - with Caveats (see below)
Settings / drivers
- AMD driver - 17.11.2 (17.11.4 has issues, havent tried 17.12.1 yet)
- Lav filters - 0.70.2
- MADVR - 0.90.10
- Windows 10 creators update
- using MPC and KODI DS
- Using FES and DIRECT 3D mode in MADVR rendering.
- using 2160p gui mode in KODI DS + windowed mode
Caveats, as previously explained, all my problems occurred when playing a 1080p movie from a 2160p desktop, it plays it ok but when MADVR drops back to 2160p desktop you either get a black screen or the PC freezes altogether. This happens every time with 3D and HDR but less frequently with 2D stuff.
The workaround is to drop your desktop into the resolution of the video beforehand. This is easy if you are just using MPC but less so if you are using KODI as you have to come out to change it. However, all of my HDR stuff is in 4K and all of my 3D stuff is in 1080p, so I’ve simply created a different shortcut to start KODI when playing 3D stuff. This shortcut first uses SETRES to change my desktop to 1080p, then sleeps for 2 seconds and loads KODI in 1080p. 3D movies then play fine.
MADSHI – any change you could look at this to see if you could find out what is crashing our machines and causing black screens when resolution is changing for the next release. Obviously its something to do with Windows 10 but I’m hoping there might be a workaround.

Watching a movie if I press ctrl j I can see that display goes at 59.999(something), and goes up to 60.(something).
Why it's not 'stable'? I'm not expert about this.
My monitor is settled to 60hz in windows.
Second question, why these numbers change also if I have video paused?

having an issue with madVr used in conjunction with either MPC-BE or JRiver. When I have 3D via nVidia control panel enabled, 3D Playback works fine.
However if I play regular 2D or 4K+HDR content, both MPC-BE and JRiver crash. They work fine if 3D in the nVidia control panel is unchecked.
this is also with the Windows Fall Creators Update. Any nVidia driver, though I stick with 385.69 from September as it has a better HD audio driver and plays best with HDR in Windows.
the previous Creators update did not have this problem.
-
On a separate note, if I play back 4K + HDR content, I will see a "snow" effect in dark scenes. This is particularly noticeable in Labyrinth during the opening credits. I had to set madVr properties for my display properties for my TV to "TV Levels (16-235)" and color to "10 bit (or higher)". once i did that, the snow effect went away.
This was only for HDR content. regular non-HDR 4K did not have this problem.

Under rendering/stereo 3d if you tick the options enable stereo 3d playback, when playing 3d content [enable] and restore OS stereo 3d settings when media player is closed then the Nvidia stereoscopic 3d toggle will be enabled and disabled automatically and you wont have the crash as long as the player is closed in between media types.

could be bandwidth issues, do you have your PC set as 4:2:0 10 bit as it should be?, if you are having to set MADVR at 16-235 it suggests to me something is set wrong somewhere, should be 0-255 unless your desktop is 4:4:4 full RGB which hdmi 2.0 spec cant handle in 4k HDR mode.

Enabling Reduce Compression artifacts fix the white dots ....
Strength 10 quality Medium
( if I go any lower than 10 , there are some white dots popping on some places, same places that doesn't change, but every number that I change move the dot or pop up other white dot on other place ) some more settings like dithering move the white dots position, and many more MadVR settings like chroma upscaling and others.
I use Process chroma channels , too, is that needed or not ?
run as part of NGU , if possible , is that needed too if I use NGU Sharp ?
That for HDR movies, Every single HDR movies with black areas and very bright images have those white dots, also on very bright green and dark shadows.
Reduce banding artifacts from low to medium and high moves that white dots on the image . so it's something with HDR movies or something with MadVR rendering of the movie . For HDR movies it seems that it is a must more than SDR movies.
Why do I need this kind of Strength to make the white dots disappear lol , why Life of PI HDR small demo doesn't have those white dots. and there is a lot of black areas
Could anyone with experience or knowledge about this settings help me with this , it's for HDR so I have no idea what their effect also for SDR yet . but understanding them might help with the performance and will give me the maximum.
1. If I have Thread Ripper AMD 1950x would it help if I put more Cpu Queues ? will I get lower rendering or would it help in anyway ?
2. how much should I put on the GPU queue, would it help reduce the rendering time ?
3. Would use a separate device for presentation and DXVA processing help with Nvidia 1080 GTX card?
4. I don't need reduce banding artifacts for HDR movies or is it still needed ? what do you guys use.
5. I am using windowed mode video frames presented in advance 4 , would using more help with the rendering ?
I need get the most minimum rendering time because the Reduce compression takes a very very high hit on the rendering time. I need every single setting of performance to set it back on lowest.

1) No, if you have large enough queues larger ones do not change anything except using more memory
2) I like a GPU queue size of 6 but the default of 8 generally works well too.
3) No
4) Depends on the source, some UHD HDR sources do have nasty banding. I would default to low/low, increasing if needed.
5) That is what I use as well, I find 4 frames presented in advance to be enough so minor glitches do not drop any frames but also small enough that seeking latency is very low. With some OS & driver combos I did find that using more frames seemed to cause presentation glitches.

Or bad GPU memory, other renderers might not show the same issues. I have often had memory issues that only showed up in one or two applications. They can be access pattern dependent and strange. It could be something else too, of course, but we really don't have enough information to do more than guess. I doubt a madVR setting could help. :(
I have watched a reasonable amount of UHD HDR blurays at this point (I have been buying them based on DeUHD's supported disc list :o) with madVR, Windows 10 1709, and current Nvidia drivers (currently 388.59). I have to manually turn HDR on and off in Windows but otherwise everything seems to work correctly.
