Is it possible to use bicubic chroma upscaling with custom parameters?I have not a high end hardware and I would set b=0.31,c=0.69 that makes a good job in my opinion and it's fast.

I am not sure what there is for a Lumagen Radiance to do when your source is an HTPC running madVR, unless you are using it as source selector switch. madVR should be sending the correct resolution and handling any calibrations (madVR uses a 256x256x256 LUT). I suppose it may offer better deinterlacing than current video cards do.
you can't send an interlanced image anyway.
madVR is outputting RGB so you need to scale the chroma scaling chroma before deintelrancing is destroy the chroma channel.

So about a month ago, MPC-HC started crashing when I tried to play a video. It was shortly after I updated my Radeon GPU drivers, so I fixed it by downgrading to the previous version.
A similar issue is now happening, but I'm pretty sure nothing has changed this time. Whenever I attempt to enter fullscreen, the whole computer locks up for a while and moves slowly for a while after that, several unrelated applications will all simultaneously crash, and this then culminates in a BSOD. I'm not sure what could be causing this (MPC, MadVR, Radeon) but in any case it's pretty much the worst possible bug that anything could result in.
I tried updating my Radeon drivers to the latest version now (16.10.2) and the problem did not change. Other video players are all playing videos in fullscreen fine.
I am using MPC-HC x64 1.7.10 and madVR v0.90.24. Can someone help me get to the bottom of this?

I guess the issue was that the GPU drivers had automatically updated to a more recent version (though not the latest one) without notifying me, as I just downgraded back to 16.7.3 and everything is working perfectly again.
It is a shame that newer drivers are totally messing things up though. I hope it can be resolved somehow soon. Is there any way I can help by providing crash logs or something?

Hey! I bought a GTX1070 Founders Edition to up my ability to use Madvr settings. I don't currently game, though at some point I plan to use VR. Mostly, though the HTPC powers my Media Room and hooks to a JVC RS500 projector with a 133" screen. My system:
Windows 7 x64
ASUS Z170 motherboard
i5 6600 CPU
16 GB memory
GTX 1070 video card (replacing a GTX 960)
Using MPC HC right now for Lav filters and Madvr
By overclocking the 1070 to right around 2000 clock, upping fan speed to full and increasing memory speed by 600 I was finally able to use NNEDI 3 for Image Doubling for 1080P and Image Quadrupling for 720p (All signals go to projector at 3820 x 2160. I had to compromise on several other settings to get this to work without many dropping frames, and I'm still not certain it will remain stable especially with the POS Founders Edition stock cooler. I downgraded Chroma Upscaling to BiCubic and Image Downscaling to Lancoz get under 40ms. I've turned the card for maximum performance (turned off power settings). At standard stock speed I can do one factor NNEDI 3 everything else is compromise.
My question is if I need to change cards to better enable the Madvr results?
I have 3 choices I believe:
1. Get an aftermarket 1070 with a better cooler so that the overclock will be more stable (though I'm running a pretty stout overclock right now)
2. Get a GTX1080 and hopefully it will allow me to run with optimized settings at stock speed.
3. Keep the card I have now and continue to come up with a compromise that works well for it (though the cooler is weak so I have high temps.

The GTX 1070 is a 6.46 TFLOPS card. An aftermarket 1080 or wait for the 1080Ti if you can afford it.

You're correct. I was misremembering. I guess I'm a little surprised that the 1070 wasn't doing more, but I am upscaling to 4k which is hugely resource-intensive.

For this reason it makes sense to use less neurons for the quadrupling step or super-xbr instead of NNEDI3.
The doubling step is much more important than the quadrupling step, and with SuperRes in the end, the differences vanish further.
With increasing source resolution, the need for expensive scaling algorithms decreases. It's probably a pure waste of resources to use more than 32 neurons for 1080p sources.

Thanks, I was wondering about using an less intensive algorithm for the quadrupling. My main concern are 720p files. My 1080p files do a simple Image Doubling to 2160p with NNEDI3 and look fantastic. Its just harder with 720p since it doesn't fall into an easy multiple and so you double, quadruple then downscale. My SD has no trouble using high settings to 2160p but that doesn't mean that what comes out is a masterpiece. At some point garbage in = garbage out.

Using refine after every 2x upscaling step with NNEDI3 quadrupling is very very slow. I recommend you either turn off refine after every step or use super-XBR for quadrupling. This will allow you to use more neurons for doubling as well, which is much more important than using NNEDI3 for quadrupling.
Edit: This is an odd synergy between the two options that is much slower than either of them separately. I think it is something about converting back and forth between RGB to YUV.

Not use nnedi quadrupling for 720p hd. Imho, good quality nnedi-based preset 720p->2160p should be:
Chroma: super-xbr100 + AR
Image: Jinc + AR
Double Luma: nnedi 32 (or 64 m.b)
Double Chroma: no
Upscaling refinement: SuperRes 3 (refine the image only once after upscaling is complete)
Artifact removal - Debanding: low+high
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: Off
Dithering: Ordered
Jinc resource intensive for 4k upscaling, it can be reduced to lanczos3+AR, chroma super-xbr -> Lanczos3+AR or Bicubic 75 no AR for max performance.
For nnedi quadrupling 720p try like this:
Chroma: Bicubic 75 no AR
Image: Lanczos3 + AR
Quadruple Luma: nnedi 32
Quadruple Chroma: no
Downscaling: Bicubic 100 +AR (soft)
Upscaling refinement: SuperRes 3 (refine the image only once after upscaling is complete)
Artifact removal - Debanding: low+high
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: Off
Dithering: orderer
If you reduce settings more, you lose quality, imho. Better replace nnedi -> super-xbr.

Thanks everyone! With the GTX 1070 I was able to cut down quadrupling to Superxbr sharpness 75 and go with NNEDI3 128 Neurons for the doubling. I put Superres on 3 and only rendered once after the upscale. This produced an image very similar to the 1080p to 2160 image I watched earlier today. There was really great details in the picture, quite amazing, really. I may still end up with a 1080 and sell the 1070 but its nice to know a list of settings that really work well together!

Does image doubling do anything good to the image if one is only using 1080p.

image doubling 1080p will scale it to 2160p.
if you do that for a 1080p screen it give you the opportunity to refine the image at 2160p before it get scaled down again. this is quite useful for some filter.
this is called super sampling this is just a different way to process an image. you have to ask your eyes if you want that result or if it is just a waste of GPU power.
this shouldn't be compared to video game supersampling because they are quite different.

Something is wrong with present times - and I can't pinpoint what. The present time starts low, and grows to 8ms after the video has been playing for a while.
Anyone knows why or how to solve?

Try lower the gpu queue you don't need much try the standard 8 should be fine...

Perhaps the long CPU and GPU queue sizes (well above the defaults) could be linked to the long present time? Also, you have checked two things that delay playback, maybe that's causing the presentation lag? I'm sure some much more knowledgeable folks will be able to chime in soon. That's just what I noticed.

Setting the delay until queu is full will only make the video pause for a second or so when seeking to make sure that the playback queue is full, this helps with less dropped frames when seeking or when opening a file. Still have 3-4 frames dropped when going full screen.

Don t seens to be a overlay problem, on the first picture is showing d3d11 windowed fullscreen... overlay mode is d3d9 if you tick the d3d11 overlay do not activate... maybe you could try untick d3d11 and fullscreebn exclusive and try overlay mode... it's a great mode, as you said previously you use a icc profile, in overlay if you enable gpu gamma ramps and enable gamma processing madvr process the icc in 16bit which have greater quality...
Ps: also in the first picture shows you are using dxva2 and the second not... this can be the issue...
also dxva2 native with nvidia its not good with madvr causes some blur on chroma layer... if I was you i give a try to software decoding... even my old i5 2500 can decode hevc 1080p sources 8bit and 10bit... BTW the option delay playback until... don t work with dxva2 native... this also can be the problem

No, you can run upscaling refinement after doubling but before downscaling. Running sharpening at a higher resolution and then downscaling often looks better than simply running sharpening at the native resolution. NNEDI3 doubling can also "repair" minor aliasing that might be present in the source. Try SSIM downscaling.

No, generally everything has worse downscaling than madVR. It is better to set your GPU to the native resolution of your screen and do any supersampling with madVR.
Games are different in that they actually render the content at the higher resolution, not just scaling up lower resolution content and then scaling it back down again. The only reason to use super sampling with video, IMO, is to use some of the upscaling refinement options at the doubled resolution.

You do have a 1920x1080 display? As I said above, always output your screen's native resolution from the GPU.

Nothing changes, just WTW is clipped but this only improves 3dlut quality

Supersampling (image doubling) is another approach to enhancing a 1080p source. Although, this is not recommended and requires a powerful GPU. Supersampling involves doubling a source to twice its original size, sharpening it, and returning it to its original resolution. The chain would look like this: Image doubling -> Upscaling refinement -> Image downscaling. The hope is applying sharpening to a doubled image will lead to a subtler sharpening effect with fewer artifacts.
High-quality, sharp downscaling with SSIM or Bicubic150 is important to retain as much detail as possible from the larger image.
1080p -> 2160p Supersampling (for high-end GPUs):
Chroma: super-xbr100 + AR
Image: Jinc3 + AR
Double Luma: 2x supersampling - super-xbr100
Double Chroma: 2x supersampling - super-xbr100

Hi there. I am playing fullHD content on a 720p projector. Windows is set to 1280x720. I'd like to shift to the bottom of the screen cinemascope movies. I tried the black bar auto detection but it does not work, it does not do anything. I have tried several Blu Rays. I've also tried setting Windows to 1080p (the projector then rescales) but still the control does not do anything.
I tried updating to 0.90.24 but no luck. What am I doing wrong?

How do I enable software decoding? I'm running a strong enough CPU, but I think I've messed something up along the way. I tried doing DXVA copy-back and sometimes the present times will jump to 10 ms... It wouldn't be a bad thing if it wouldn't cause dropped frames, especially on 60fps materials.

I guess most people don't use the same settings and for a good reason :o. At the same time, my most watched material is drawn and many of it is low resolution or the lineart is a bit thick. Having really strong edge sharpening and thinning helps making the entire image look sharper / like it has a considerably better definition.

Sorry if I'm a nuissance, I'm trying to see what is max possible for a GPU at this date and I'm trying to use it at max.
I'm complaining when things like present times have high values and I do wonder if it's normal for render time to be so high or for frames to be skipped sometimes.
It's a fun hobby!
I still actually need advice on many things, I love to experiment / understand / debug. Regardless of if the answer is that I have to lower settings or not, I am curious to know more.
Also, I absolutely love example images that show the differences an algorithm does, really helpful on understand well - what it does.

How do I enable software decoding? I'm running a strong enough CPU, but I think I've messed something up along the way. I tried doing DXVA copy-back and sometimes the present times will jump to 10 ms... It wouldn't be a bad thing if it wouldn't cause dropped frames, especially on 60fps materials.

3D picture looks fantastic with madvr, but subtitle depth (plane) goes occasionally wrong resulting my eyes going awry. I'm watching original blu-ray ISO's and using madVR v0.90.20, LAVfilters 0.68.1. MPC-HC + Nvidias 373.06 drivers.
Been testing same movies with Pioneer blu-ray player and the subtitle depth is correct with that.
I'd be really grateful for any help.

About anti-bloating filter
If use sxbr ab 25 it's redundant use ab again with sharpen edges? Does ab get stronger if double activated?
If use for example adaptative sharpen and sharpen edges... AB is applied two times? So using two sharpening alhos should I decrease ab strength?

It's a final step applied after image enhancements and hence only applied once.

Supersampling (image doubling) is another approach to enhancing a 1080p source. Although, this is not recommended and requires a powerful GPU. Supersampling involves doubling a source to twice its original size, sharpening it, and returning it to its original resolution. The chain would look like this: Image doubling -> Upscaling refinement -> Image downscaling. The hope is applying sharpening to a doubled image will lead to a subtler sharpening effect with fewer artifacts.
High-quality, sharp downscaling with SSIM or Bicubic150 is important to retain as much detail as possible from the larger image.
1080p -> 2160p Supersampling (for high-end GPUs):
Chroma: super-xbr100 + AR
Image: Jinc3 + AR
Double Luma: 2x supersampling - super-xbr100
Double Chroma: 2x supersampling - super-xbr100
Downscaling: SSIM 1D 100% + AR
Upscaling refinement: SuperRes (3)
Artifact removal - Debanding: Medium/High
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: Off
Dithering: Ordered
If you prefer to have more control over the application of image sharpening, avoid supersampling and use the first profile. Applying Image enhancements to the native source allows more influence over the final sharpening effect.
Personally, I prefer image enhancements to supersampling with upscaling refinement.
So it sounds like you don't use this method Warner?
You set your video card to 2160 and only use Image Enhancements for sharpening, is that correct?
If I have this right, why do you prefer the above method not using Image Doubling?
