If you put it that way, same as a Mercedes is pointless compared to a Ferrari F60. But then again, I don't seek perfection and you're somehow contradictory since mVR is free, as in cheapest software solution. If money would bother me so much, then I would build my personal IMAX. :rolleyes:

I think they sell improved gasoline for sport cars, you're more prone to notice its effect on a Ferrari than on a Skoda...if your LCD monitor is the weakest link, there's really no point in wasting time/money and energy on improving the source IMO.

thick mineral glass goes up to 58 Abbe, polycarbonate 32...so twice more light dispersion :eek:

add the anti-glare panel on top of it, and MTF sharpness is just down the drain...no matter what you'll do, the panel itself will always be the weakest link.

I personnaly cannot stand polycarbonate glasses(they give me the feeling to watch through recycled Coke bottles, which they are...technically :D)

anyway, we should all enjoy our current set ups(I sure as hell do!) and eagerly wait for the next madVR update....so much time has passed, it'll be a blast for sure :p

As I said, every technology has its weaknesses. Going CRT-LCD was such a wonderful gift to my eyes, no more lame geometry problems. Letters are letters, not a blurry mess. The sensation of perfectly defined lines was amazing. I don't care about MFT sharpness, the faulty geometry kills sharpness and perceived resolution a lot more. However color reproduction and other things were (and still are except in very few models) just terrible.

About the mineral glass light dispersion, while that's true in the end what matters is how it looks, and for me reflections caused by the glass were a lot more "experience killers" than any advantage the glass could have. I don't care if polycarbonate has twice the light dispersion or if the anti-glare panel scatters the light coming from the monitor if the image that has to go through it perfectly defined, in the end you still have a much more detailed and sharp image than any CRT can produce. To each its own ;)

Since I've been on that road I can tell you that being an Audiophile is a more like a mental disses, cause you get obsessed with perfection and never find it, you always feel like you're close but never there, so you end up spending thousands of dollars on audio equipment and you love it at first, your personal bliss but with time passing you find some small imperfections which becomes huge, cause your obsession with them you end up feeling like there's so much room for more improvement... CRT's are much older and you praise on those... :p Still have my dell p1130 (which is actually a sony g520 inside).I use it about 3 years so is still working fine, but now I keep it in the basement. Was hopping to replace that with a SED which never came...

the biggest difference is that I'm very happy w/ my current set up...I'm not cursed w/ the "upgraditis" disease audiophiles all have to go through.

what I care the most about is smoothness and optical sharpness...and I get both w/ CRT and DLP :)

CRT's just plain work, it's a mature technology...LCD is still worthless nowadays, so a +2yo LCD monitor would be even worse.

oh come on I myself own a Kuro KRP-500 and had a Trinitron-based 21" CRT, but my NEC 2690 LCD is still the best (and widest-gamut) monitor for photography I've used. CRT's can't have perfect convergence at the borders, and pixel mapping is not 1:1, makes it a bit difficult to judge some aspects of digital photography. For video it might be OK I guess, but LCD is not that bad either.

how is a wider gamut a good thing exactly? my CRT almost has a perfect SMPTE-C gamut, love it! I don't even bother w/ gamut conversion on it...and AFAIK sRGB/HDTV/REC709(3 names for the same thing) is all you need for photos.

yes convergence in the corners is not too great, but at least it doesn't have a native res.

anyway all the available technologies are made of compromises, the LCD drawbacks are not acceptable to me(low CR, plastic design, etc)....some find CRT or DLP unaccepatble too, it's a free world ;)

For photos you can use wider gamuts because different devices have different color spaces. A proof in a wider gamut monitor whose color space overlaps better with the printer's is going to look closer to the print. sRGB is good because it's standard, easy to use and all, but it's a compromise nevertheless. I've had a couple of printers that can do colors outside of the sRGB space, and Adobe RGB worked well with them. Some use Prophoto RGB (I do sometimes) for having even a wider space, but when you have such a wide space, higher bit depth than 8-bit might be required.

sRGB ii still all right though, perfectly usable especially when you want perfect compatibility and you don't control the whole processing chain (like sending to a print lab).

well, CRT's don't have viewing angle issues for instance...this is improving w/ every new LCD generation as I understand it(TN blablabla), anyway I think we just need to agree to disagree ;)

and it would appear that some big LCD TV's can do 24/25p...but how about your average LCD computer monitor? last time I checked all they were offering was 60Hz, and sometimes a bloated 75Hz that was internally processed in 60 anyway.

IPS LCD panels don't have viewing angle issues either. You have to search and pay for them, just like you do with good CRTs. Also you can buy glossy monitors if you hate matte plastic so much.

"Average" (250€, might be considered expensive for others) computer monitors will give you true 100Hz and 120Hz, pure smoothness for all common frame rates in existence, not to mention how good everything not video related that can produce "unlimited" fps like games, the simple movement of the mouse, etc. looks... it's just another world. But the panel technology is not there yet. The market is going to be flooded soon with more 120Hz monitors because of all the 3D mumbo jumbo, then we will have IPS panels, 120Hz and LED backlighting with local dimming in the same monitor/TV :eek:

I vaguely remember something called madVR... and this thread being devoted to its development instead of 'arguing' the most fundamental minutae of HTPC playback...

I know this doesn't happen that often on doom9, but usually when the perpetually oblivious wander into a forum and decide to make a spectacle of themselves, you let them hem and haw and, eventually, they'll get bored and wander off. You never, ever respond. The guy came on here and insisted, at length, on an HTPC forum, that 60hz is obviously sufficient for film playback. Why are we indulging this?

Here's to madshi, his excellent work on madVR and to the release of 0.12 when it's ready. Also, here's for not needing to be told by some bumbling transient as to why, or why not, madVR is a useful tool for the doom9 community and the video community at large.

alright, sounds like they are improving indeed! OTOH, the native res is still a major issue, how many ppl w/ 22" are forced to buy very expensive graphic cards to play recent games? I can play in XGA on my 19", I can also watch movies in 720p or 1080p if I feel like it, hell I can even play old W98 games in 640x480 if I fancy it...not much can be done about that on LCD I'm afraid.

there's no doubt that those cheap 22/24" screens are driving the high end graphic cards market...and I'm still doubtful about the actual CR(after calibration) of those 22/24" PC monitors(they prolly will have a hard time exceeding 600:1 and will never reach >1000:1).

PS: ok this one is TN, got 5 stars in their test and gives 900:1 calibrated(french link again, sorry): http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-240-7268-38.html

and here they say that the best IPS can indeed reach 1000:1 calibrated, but then their black level is more light gray than "black": http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-240-4306-71.html

so on the CR front, there still isn't much news...is there? it sounds retarded to me to buy a $600 graphic card to play it on a 600:1 monitor(even if it's huge :o)

I'm having trouble to get madVR to run with KMPlayer 2.9.4.1435 on Win7 x64. Is there any special step to enable it for KMP?

I can get it run without any problem with PotPlayer just by forcing it, which forcing it with KMP does not work.

try disabling its built-in video transform filter...it defaults to YUY2, and that makes mVR rather upset :p

ideally you should run KMP in superspeed mode, to get rid of all its built-in filters...I've also deleted most DLL's in its folder FWIW.

FYI, 24Hz w/madVR:

You folks that are having tearing with madVR/24Hz. I just upgraded to the latest FFdshow and MPC-HC and using Reclock b60. 24Hz with 23.976 material (reclocked) is now perfect! I have the Reclock vsynch off and the madVR tearing unchecked. Playback decoding with FFdshowMT on LG37 24Hz with the Microsoft ATI drivers dated 8/15/09. HD2600XT.

They made some presenter fixes in MPC-HC for all renderers because madVR is now faster and it doesn't hiccup as much at startup. Also, when seeking, it doesn't freeze or crash MPC. It's a solid build (b1529).

With W7 / MPC b1529 / Reclock (no vsync correction) / ATI4550 (CCC 9.12, TV set to 24hz), with Aero on I get stuttering, and with Aero off I get horizontal tearing about a fifth of the way up from the bottom of the screen. Same result with older MPC builds. Unusable for me at present, the only thing working for me is EVR CP with disable desktop composition checked (and to be fair this is perfectly smooth).

I'm on Win7 Ult x64. I have Aero off (but on doesn't matter). I got so sick of the 9.10, 9.11 and 9.12 ATI drivers not working right with my older card, I just decided to clean ATI off and let the Windows Update do it's thing. I guess I should've kept the 4770. Looks like I'm headed for a 5670 anyway.

I get a tremendous experience as well with Ar-jar's EVR-Sych and FFDshow RGB out and reclock.

I still have one issue with some process kicking off every now and then and it copies the screen to the clipboard about 1000 times, then exits, but when this happens, my video playback performance suffers badly. I've been unable to identify this, I think it's the video driver. This machine is clean.

I would leave it "application dependent", mVR must be forcing it anyway...you can look it up w/ RivaTuner and IIRC it will show as "forced" in mVR.

i found something wonderful in latest MPC-HC it can now switch @Hz depending on the movie.... this does not work with MadVR so far... i really really hope it will in a near future...

it could be fixed by MPC-HC team i guess... just change the Hz and wait for it to set and _THEN_ load the movie...

just wanted you all to know...

I think I disabled all the transform filter, but I'm not sure! I have seen pic that ppl can choose madVR under Video Processing - Renderer, but I just don't have that in the list. However, I can find it under System Filter Manager!

About the YUY2, I have de-selected all YV in Video Processing - Output Colorspaces...

Some say (even the creator of madVR) that you need a specific equipment to see any difference, a High - End Projector, a High-End TV with optional refresh rates or an old CRT and all of them need to bee professionally calibrated. But not with the naked eye, you need to zoom in as shown in the 1'st page of this topic. Maybe only on the projector could be noticeable with naked eye, don't know for sure... yet theoretically seems it should work. This Video Render was not meant for LCD Monitors, most keep telling me that directly or indirectly...

MadVR's default upscaling algorithm settings are more neutral than simple bilinear or bicubic resizing. I think people should be able to notice at least that on an LCD TV, when playing something that is not native resolution.

Welcome to my ignore list.

Please everybody simply ignore whatever Alante says. For your interest, you can reach the ignore list feature in "User CP -> Edit Ignore List".

madVR aims to reach mathematically perfect playback quality. Other renderers usually fall short in quality. However, if the other renderers are reasonably close (some are, depending on your GPU, driver version and OS), it will be difficult to see the difference with normal video content. You may be able to see differences with "red on black" scenes (see screenshots 1st page), or with some "foggy" scenes (very slight brightness/color changes over large image areas, similar to gray ramps), or when zooming. They are supposed to be empty. Their only purpose is to start the test pattern source filter. Only their file name is used. Just drag the ytp files to your media player after you've registered the madTestPatternSource filter...

With an ATI 4670, I did see the difference with the patterns with madVR and the usual EVR-CP. The only time I got close to madVR was with ffdshow's high-quality RGB conversion with dithering.

On real-life content, I also saw a difference, with red text on a Colbert Report episode.

madshi, the new ATI 5000 cards actually output 30-bit deep color with Windows 7. Do you have any thoughts on that, as in could it help madVR or could madVR or EVR be optimized for that?

And btw, who told you that watching movies on a computer monitor would be a good idea? For movie watching you should use a display which is capable of using refresh rates that match the usual movie frame rates.


Basic VB ignore list is not so efficient, but if you want, I could teach you how to remove my posts entirely, with a simple add-on for FireFox. It's real simple, use: Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748) + this script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/24465)). ;)

madVR aims to reach mathematically perfect playback quality. Other renderers usually fall short in quality. However, if the other renderers are reasonably close (some are, depending on your GPU, driver version and OS), it will be difficult to see the difference with normal video content. You may be able to see differences with "red on black" scenes (see screenshots 1st page), or with some "foggy" scenes (very slight brightness/color changes over large image areas, similar to gray ramps), or when zooming. you would have to control how TMDS is encoded to be able to guarantee that...IME(and friends' too) nvidia and ati cards definitely don't output the same picture, even w/ HR :o

I'm not sure there would be a benefit with the older 8 bit LCD panels as they could not use the extra information. This being My LCD TV. Panel is a Chi Mei V420H1-L07

My hardwares: Q6600 @ 3600Mhz, Radeon HD 5850
My softwares: Windows 7 x64 with recent DX, VC, .NET, and msXML redists ; Catalyst 9.12 hotfix ; FFDShow_build3200_ilc10_x86 ; MPC-HC_build1.3.1249.0_x86 ; AviSynth 2.6alpha_090927 ; t3dlut v1.0, madvr v0.11

I unpacked madvr.zip to c:\Program Files (x86)\madvr and I registered it with the intall.bat file.

I can use the renderer and I can access it's settings. But I have some weird problems and confusing questions:

1: The Source resolution -> Monitor resolution resize looks like it using the nearest neighborhood method. Any 480p and 720p movies look ugly in full-screen mode. 1080p source (and when I rescale 720p to 1080p with FFDShow) is nice.

2: It would not load my 3dlut files. I used the equipped cr3dlut to create them and they are working with t3dlut. I copied them to the upper directory (which is the install directory) and I checked the "use 3dlut" box on the settings tab (and I can see the change in the settings.ini which showed up in the install directory). May be it would use "HD - Video" instead of "HD - PC", or I did not find out the correct filename. I do not know.

3: I can use t3dlut, and I can see a gamut converted image with madvr. (It is easy to tell with a wide-gamut display.) This is very odd because madvr should accept YV12 only and t3dlut has to output RGB32 only. There is a YUY2 stage before the gamut converted RGB32 so the output could not be YV12 anymore when I do not apply any further color space conversion (which I would not).

So, my questions:
- What is the trick with the input/output color space limitations?
- Where should they located and what should be the exact name for the 3dlut files?
- Is it a bug with the full-screen resize or is it a feature which would be added later? (I could read some full-screen related stuff in the readme...)

May be I will have enough CPU power for full-screen resize with FFDShow when madvr will handle the gamut conversion (t3dlut would eat my CPU, there is no free resource to do a software resize - mostly because mpchc.exe would not use more then 2 cores, not even when I set every filter to create 4 threads...).

And: Thanks for this renderer. I would be very happy with it when it will work as it meant to work. :)

My display lets you select between a standard and a wide color-space mode. Though I highly suspect the answer is "no," would there be any benefit to enabling the wide mode on the TV, creating a custom LUT tailored to that color space, and using that LUT in madVR? Would such a setup yield more accurate color reproduction, or would I just be wasting time, or possibly even introducing interpolation inaccuracies and other such errors?

My display chain also supports xvYCC. I again suspect the answer is no, but is this useful or usable by madVR in any way?

Finally, my LCD display has a 10-bit panel. I know the new EVR-custom renderer in MPC-HC supports 10-bit surfaces and output; can madVR be setup in a similar way, to dither to 10-bits instead of 8?

Sorry about all this... I'm usually pretty good with figuring this stuff out, but the exact interrelationships between color spaces, gamuts, color bit-depths, surface bit-depths and LUTs remain utterly overwhelming for me :confused:

For the ytp, I get this error with both MPC-HC & KMP:
madVR reports:
- reading 3dlut file failed

Would it because I couldn't choose the madTestPatternSource renderer in those players? I tried to force the renderer in potplayer, but it says file is empty... :eek:

Make sure that FFDShow Video is outputting YV12 and stop rescaling in FFDShow or you might be missing part of the point!!

MadVR's scaler is working correctly on my computer (what I love the most), so I would think you have something set incorrectly as it most certaily does not look like nearest neighbour (unless that is what you have set in MadVR settings).

Try delete the settings.ini file in the MadVR directory and make sure you do not have another copy of MadVR installed on your system somewhere.

My setup: CCCP 09-09-09(all default settings, except) MadVR set as directshow video in Media Player Classic-HC options. Well, Reclock as well, but that is not related here. :p

I kept the original settings. Here is my settings.ini (It saved it after I checked a box and unchecked it again and I hit apply...)

It solved my problems! MadVR is using my 3dlut files and full-screen resize is working now. :)

Is there some kind of debug version available?

I've downloaded the latest mpc-hc and selected madvr as renderer and it's not working right.

When I play VOB files where the decoded is Cyberlink PowerDVD 8's filter, it works but the output is kind of uglier than VMR9 imho.

However, with h264 or xvid content it works with some videos and freezes with most of them. For example it worked with Crowdrun 2160p but it fails with 320x240 25 fps xvid.. Tried disabling the internal dxva filter for h264, then the internal ffmpeg one, leaving coreavc to decode and it's no go.

When it works, it works with the regular internal ffmpeg filter...

seems like it crashes with resolutions close to 4:3 (for example crashes on a clip that's 736x512) but works on a clip that's 752x326

my system is windows 2003 standard (or advanced, i don't think it matters anyway, for all intents and purposes it's XP), radeon 4850, 4GB DDR2 and so on...

later edit... even with the same file, sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes...

madVR is more GPU hungry than any other video renderer. What is a mid-level GPU? I cannot get smooth playback on my 8500GT. When you move, resize or pause, it blinks. The video is always off by several frames(easy to find it out via fast forward).

P.S. is there a minimum requirement for each of madVR's scaling algorithm?

madVR is more GPU hungry than any other video renderer.
requirements:
- graphics card with full Direct3D9 hardware support
- at least 128MB of dedicated graphics card memory

IMO, MadVR is just very video RAM hungry. My 256MB card can just play 1920x1080.

What is a mid-level GPU?
Some people appear to be able to use MadVR on Geforce 9400. That is what *I* would consider mid-range.

I cannot get smooth playback on my 8500GT.
What resolution and how much video ram do you have? Use GPU-z 0.3.8 to check how much is actually being used. If you are trying to play a resolution that requires more video ram than you have, then there will be major lag.

As far as xvYCC goes, now thats very interesting, it can only work on windows 7 and you'll need a hdmi 1.3 videocard.
What it does is increase the number of colors available within the existing rec709 limits, suddonly instead of 255 reds you have 40xx reds, which could result in a much more realistic picture.
madVR could use this to not only actually display very accurate video but maybe even dither the existing values to look even more realistic phycovisually(at the cost of pure mathematical accuracy ofcourse).
