they are supposed to work PCIe 1.1 or better.
the problem is the bios version and that this is not as transparent as it should. the card it self is not the problem here.
it is BTW. it is not recommend to use the card with PCIe 4.0.
you should not use enhance sync...
and so much more.
buying a card is gambling anyway.
Known Issues
Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products may intermittently experience loss of display or video signal during gameplay.
Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products may experience stutter in some games at 1080p and low game settings.
who would have through a GPU that uses a clock of 6 mhz while been used could make problems...
there are really bad custom designs like the asus tuf and more. don't get just any card.
the card works great in my very old i3 system with a 400 watt PSU PCIe 3.0 as long as hardware decoder are not used.
in my x570 system it just a joke.
PCIe 2.0 is for still unknown reason pretty much to slow for 4K60 copyback.

Pretty sure it needs a PCIe 4.0 board. Mine would not post using my old PCIe 2.0 mobo, so I upgraded, but that could have been just my setup.
My 5700 XT is connected with a PCIe 3.0 x16 and it works. I have no older stuff to test.

did your old system have UEFI bios?, some seem to suggest recent cards may require this, not sure how true this is.
My current Asus P8-z68 lx seems to have it.
huhn

update your bios to the newest version and you should be fine it's an uefi in your case and the last bios version did improve the PCIe compatibility.
you clearly don't need an uefi.
there is no garantie what so ever you try to put a GPU in an 8 year old system.

No. In your case I guess you'll find out soon enough.

I am running my Sapphire Nitro+ 5700 XT in my ancient 990FX board which is PCI-e 2.0... I have not noticed a single issue.
If the Graphics Card is not working in an old machine, it's not the interface. All cards are 100% backwards and forwards compatible. The problem would lie elsewhere.

edit: My MB is also non-UEFI

as said before this is always an issue with the board not the card.

hope to get it this weekend, be interesting to see what it does to me rendering times, with my ideal setup they are about 60ms so i've having to cut back in a few areas, be nice if I could run everything I need and remain sub 30ms

the 5700 xt is a nut monster compared to the RX 580 if most of your current render times come from NGU then yes shouldn't be a problem..

@YukonTrooper: even though the pixel count of your video gives an aspect ratio of 2.39:1, the aspect ratio is reported to madVR as 1.78:1 by whatever is playing/decoding it (line "movie 3840x1608, 16:9") so madVR stretches it to that aspect ratio as instructed.
This is probably a metadata mistake in the source. If this is a MKV, try to open it with MKVToolNix or some other tool and change/remove the 16:9 aspect ratio tag.
Edit: often this happens because a MKV has both 'aspect ratio' and 'original aspect ratio' tags, the second one indicating what it was before cropping i.e. 16:9 if the source was a Blu-ray with black bars, and the decoder passing the original aspect ratio to madVR instead of the actual one.I've removed the "video display width" and "video display height" fields in the header using MKVToolNix. "Video pixel width" and "video pixel height" remain at 3840 and 2160. Still, the video frame is decentered towards the bottom and cropped a bit.
EDIT: Figured it out. There were header values entered in the crop fields. I removed those and the MKV is fine now. Must be the same for a few of my other HDR MKV files.
Thanks for sending me in the right direction.

That would be up to your player, it could instruct madVR to show the video in its original resolution. Of course it might not fit your screen then..
If the player requests a size different from the video resolution, then madVR has no choice but to up/downscale it.

are you saying you want your monitor/TV to do the upscaling duties instead of your player, this isnt a good idea, MADVR is far better at upscaling.
if you have a 4k TV for instance and want to only output to 1080p and have you TV upscale to 4k you simply put 1080p display modes in MADVR and ensure you dont have refresh rate switching turned on in DSplayer.
What exactly are you trying to achieve?

If I'm playing 4k video and refresh switch is on, it follows that of 1080ps refresh rates and resolution, effectively downscaling the video. I want madvr to follow the refresh rate of the video's resolution and stop the downscaling
Tried profile switching and it's not working. It's still following that of 1080ps

Hi guys,
Anybody here with and nvidia card and Windows 10 1909? would you please check if 10bit is working?
Here, D3D11 FSE or Windowed seems Limited to 8bit, i've tried couple of studio and gaming drivers, madvr stable and test build 112b.. unfortunately nothing is working.

Hi, dropped my AMD RX 5700 in today (not the XT version). With my current settings unchanged with HDR to SDR i was running at about 63ms on my RX580 and playback was glitchy. I'm now on 28ms so this is a pretty decent card.
very happy with that.

Install MPC Video Renderer and test with D3D9 and with D3D11.
D3D11 should be fine. D3D9 should be too bright, so elevated blacks. I found that issue, but didn‘t want to mess around with graphic cards switching. So it looks like a driver issue only for 5700 (XT), because I never saw that with my RX480.

I will check that D3D9 vs 11 thing... For a long time my blacks have been too low. Even with my R9 270X. I am currently using a driver brightness of 7 for both my displays. I have noticed this crush Windows wide, even on the desktop.

yeah spotted that, only happens with EVR renderer i found but with all decoders, havent played with it much as MADVR is my main driver but the workaround for evr user is to add 16-235 to 0-255 filer/shader on post.

cheers, very happy with its performance to be honest too, no issues with MADVR at all, everything works as it should which is great.
Purely for MADVR use this is a good card but there are bugs with other renderers so it would be hard to recommend this card as a general HTPC card right now, hoping AMD will fix the bugs at some point.

madVR and MPC Video Renderer in D3D11 is fine. So it‘s fine for me and my HTPC usage, but they have to fix it and surely they will. I also really want a new Nvidia card in a future pc build next year, but if the recent gaming issues still persist, see pdf info of Nvidia, all games I personally play, are affected, random bsod are a no go especially for older games. But I really want one, I can then compare the two directly and am not a AMD fanboy and both will have its pros and cons, but the Nvidia must be better then, so I can also do gaming without issues like random bsod.

the current driver list 3 games with issues that's it. and none of these are confirmed to be a driver problem. not saying there not much much more issues but they don't list them and no word of a BSOD.
btw. how comes that major video playback bugs like crashing hardware decoding are not listed in your driver bug list thingy?
you feel free to read about it:
https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-19-9-3
this is the second driver where they claimed it to be fixed and it seem that'S the case for the majority.

Sorry, only the game crashes, no BSOD, much better :p
What do you expect, it is a new architecture, just give them some time. AMD isn't fixing a typo for me, but I can not be mad at them somehow.
Tell me driver version and exactly what crashes when using what hardwaredecoder (does it matter?), then I add it. Feed me with info ;)

all hardware decoder are crashing the driver since the release of 5700 series with these cards obviously.
maybe i have to be more clear if you use DXVA2 or D3D11 decode the player can crash at any point.
fixed with 19.9.3 so all older ones.
nvidia is releasing a new architecture every 1-2 years i would never except a thing like it is a new architecture give them some months- stuff like this is not ok.
Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products may intermittently experience loss of display or video signal during gameplay.
this is my current favoured bug. renamed for the 3rd time now?
short version is the driver crashes. at least is not a general issue.

Comparing Nvidia, which is a specialist for "only" for GPU with the small AMD which also does CPUs, don't be so hard to them ;)
AMD already made Intel CPUs way cheaper, for HEDT half the price.
Jay has a 9980XE which was 2000$, the new 10980XE is 1000$
Please watch entire video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVccnAr39Mo
But I must admit both worlds (team red and team green) are not good at driver quality, seems to be very hard to do.

Maybe they should stop with GPUs then if they can't make a quality product, maybe take a break until they can figure it out. Come back stronger.
The 5700 is 5 months old by now, plenty to fix launch issues, if they can't make it run stable and do something simple like play video in EVR properly, then thats not a good sign at all.
The same conditions apply to every piece of hardware I would consider to buy. If it doesn't work, then its not getting bought, I don't care about the excuses ("its a small company, give them a break"). My real problem is that I have to deal with people that don't know this and still buy them (both at work and here), who have weird issues and blame software, because their shiny brand new GPU can't possibly be at fault.

I agree with all of your points, but Nvidia prices were getting ridiculous in RTX series, so a competitor is needed to get the prices down.
Do a flashback to the RTX launch, the first driver for RTX models was 411.63 from 2018-09-19, but HDR passthrough for users who don't can afford such high prices for a graphics card who (need to) use HDR passthough had bogus metadata sent out.
430.39 from 2019-04-23 fixed it but removed 3D support, which may also be a point for HTPC users who have bought lots of 3D titles. It took them also over 6 month to fix it.
Nevertheless I will buy a new Nvidia card for my new PC next year. Looking foward for the beast :D
huhn
1st December 2019, 22:55
the rx 5700 xt has the same pricing as these RTX cards taking out every possible way for me to call them over priced compared to AMD.
and maybe is just me but i see a difference between bogus meta data and a GPU driver that is constantly crashing.
maybe i need to get my exception down too but having a 450 euro card for about 4 months now that i can't use where i want it at all doesn't feel right. because of a known bug.
i'm all ready excepting them to refresh this card before i can use mine. and the only reason i still own it is that i don't want to bother with returning it.
it not like the fun is stopping anytime soon: https://www.techpowerup.com/261603/amd-radeon-navi-opencl-bug-makes-it-unfit-for-seti-home
even zen 2 had a major release bug with absolutely no excuses.
the only way it could been released with it in this case is that they didn't even test it. if it would have been released today it would be a "flawless" product without the bios update nightmare.
all this just to meme a little bit at 07.07.2019 to release bad tested hardware.

When you find one, let us know. :D Because yes, a true competitor is needed. And AMD should be it. But right now, I'd not consider one and I was a huge AMD die hard fan for many years. The RTX's aren't perfect, but, for madvr right now, it's the only thing I'd consider. Hopefully that changes as real competition IS needed.

A typical cost issue, to save money and use users as beta testers and there's a word for it - banana product. Perhaps team blue is better next year, they seem to release a dedicate graphics card, but nev is not convinced:

Hi guys, I see a lot of you now own the LG C9 and Nvidia cards, and there's an LG OLED with madVR thread started I see. I just got a C9, and its extremely hard to find the best info for the C9 setup for PCs / madVR in terms of what modes to use (PC Label On/Off, Game Mode On/Off, Ultra HD Deep Color On/Off) and use of RGB or ycbcr4XX, 8 / 12 bit output, different results in 60hz vs refresh rates, warm 2 vs medium(default) temperature when in game mode. There is one thing I think there is consensus on, and that's that there is confusion and different information in various threads on the best setup :)
Does anyone know where the best source of latest information is as I see some really good discussions in this thread a few posts back from a few of you, regarding best setups to avoid banding with HDR and SDR movies given the limitations of this TV in various modes? Should we start a LG C9 specific thread here do you think, or are existing ones on the likes of avforums the best place to go?
It almost feels like if we had a really well defined set of tests we want to benchmark the various combinations against, we could capture all of the results somehow. I started to do this myself with a hdr10 banding rotating gradients video but find it hard to tell if the gradients I am seeing should be visible, or if what I'm seeing is as good as it gets (without turning on something like smooth gradation). Its very hard to objectively compare each combination of settings, as there are so many variables, driver versions, madVR calibration/hdr/dithering settings etc etc.
Asmodian
2nd December 2019, 21:07
I don't like that spinning gradient test, use the full screen 16 bit gradients instead. I found testing to be relatively straightforward, the different options do not influence each other very much so you can test them individually.
I did a lot of testing myself so I am pretty confident in my settings, assuming no banding and full resolution chroma are priorities. If you don't mind YCbCr 422 then madVR seems somewhat less important though still useful, but you do get more flexibility with regards to HDMI modes, etc. The only contradictory advice I have seen is people saying what should be ideal theoretically, without actually testing it.

I think we need one for Samsung qled Q9fn too. If anyone got any tips with this tv and madvr please let us know. The tv is 10 bit display so is it better to have NVidia control panel set to rgb 12 bit (NVidia only has 8 and 12 bit option). Or is ycbr 444 8 bit better for movies and gaming.
