I found this old post in the 5050 forum, where someone asked about the colors.

At 75% to 80% of DCI-P3, you are basically arriving at sRGB levels, totally invalidating any gains of using a bigger color space.

Except when the content is actually graded to BT2020 instead of DCI P3. BT2020 used to just be a container for DCI-P3, it’s less and less the case anymore as the container is more and more “full”. 80% of DCI-P3 is very far from BT2020. Some consumer displays / PJs can display more than P3. For example my RS2000 can reach BT2020 blue and above P3 green. Others are much better.

Also the loss of brightness when using the EPSON is abysmal, as it is with say the RS4500 laser. My rs2000 only loses 5-10% in high lamp when using the P3 filter, and it increases native contrast. You lose a bit more in low lamp, around 15%, but it’s still worth it if you don’t have a huge screen to light up.

Is anyone else running MadVR with an Epson 5050ub? I'm curious to see what they've chosen for calibration settings, and what their eyes are seeing. Is there a right or wrong setting, or do you go by what looks best to you? I actually tried setting the device is calibrated to DCI-P3, and it looks really good to my eyes.

his point is 80 % DCI P3 is very very close to BT709 unlike 90 % DCI P3 which is far bigger than bt 709 by a big margin.

the differenace between BT 709 255 blue and DCI P3 (literally the same) or BT2020 is pretty small unlike the other primaries.

if your gamut is bigger it doesn't change it for a user with 80 % DCI P3. as you are at 90-105 % that's a completely different boat.
and you have a very good reason to use it.

Hi, do you actually see the dropped frames, is there a screen glitch, if not and these are at the begginning only / you dont get anymore after that this should be ignored surely?

I do notice the dropped frames as a stutter - Only shows as the two dropped frames not as a presentation glitch. It is very noticeable.

I should have mentioned that it does continue to happen - it just also happens right at the beginning, which has allowed me to test different drivers easily to see if that was a quick fix... which it wasn't.

EDIT: It MAY continue to happen. It definitely happens when the file is first played, and any time after skipping chapters etc. Possibly even pause and unpausing. I let the movie continue to play, and walked away for 20 mins - when I came back there WAS a dropped frame, but I don't know if that is just the regular dropped frame from the 1 repeat every 50mins or so.

EDIT2: Plus the 1 frame drop is worse on the new drivers. I think I was at 1 drop every 1.1x hours, now its 50 something minutes. Not much I can do about that one though, just wanted to point it out.

did you delete and re-add your custom display modes when you got the new card, might be worth doing that, some people find these essential for NVIDIA cards but I think they've got better over time, still not as good as AMD cards with 23,976 playback.

I haven't had to use custom resolutions/refreshes for a while with the nvidia drivers - they have gotten much closer to 23.976 than in the past.

Plus, this driver problem also presented on the GTX 1650 before I replaced it. I thought maybe the 3060 being newer would be fine on the newer driver, but same issue. So two different cards, both with the same issue on the new drivers.

I have a different system on a different display that I will be upgrading to a 3060 tonight, I will see if it does the same thing. If so, it is DEFINITELY a driver issue - and something I should let madshi know about? Is there still that page where you can open a ticket or report a bug or something like that?

UPDATE: I installed the latest Nvidia drivers onto a completely different system. Same exact issue is presenting.

So either these new drivers are causing the issue, or they aren't playing nice with some setting on my system.

Note: I use MPC-HC as the video player software on both systems.

Do you consider this an issue?

Of course I see dropped frames on open and after seeking. This has been true forever and is the expected behavior. Everything is working as intended and as it always has. :p

Yes there are always dropped frames on startup and seek. Then it should play normally.

It is the huge stutter from 2 dropped frames 30 seconds LATER from start or chapter skip which is the issue.

This only presented on the new driver install - and I can't go back to the driver version I had with the new card I have. The 3060 is so new, I can't use drivers from a year ago.

Everything is fine with my 3090 and driver 496.49, so it isn't purely the driver.

I didn't do anything too special when setting it up. One frame presented in advance with D3D11 and presenting a frame for every v-sync seems to work best for me on Windows 11. Win10 was fine before I installed 11. I have hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and Resizable BAR enabled, not that those should matter.

Have you monitored clock speeds of the CPU and GPU when you see the stutter?

Hi guys,

What subtitle color settings do you use for HDR video? White subtitles are eye-searingly bright. Unfortunately Netflix's app has this as default, making it unwatchable.

I am using MadVR with MPC-HC.

It is odd that the new driver release caused the same issue on both of the cards. And now ALSO in a different system with a different display.

I DID notice a spike in rendering. On the film in question, I saw the 5s high spike to 68ms - then if I just let the movie play, never again. But if I skip a chapter ahead, then wait another 30 seconds after playing....

So something is causing a brief flash spike in rendering - and this happens even when watching 1080p content, so no tone mapping going on there, and my rendering times are very low.

EDIT: Asmodian - the 3090 is such a beast card, I wonder if it is experiencing the spike too, but the spike isn't enough to cause any dropped frames? If you get a chance, could you load a high demand movie and watch the 5s highs for the first minute? Maybe see if you get a spike too.

I have seagate 1tb 3.0 portable hard drive (D:\).
I did setup madvr in my portable drive but now I tried to move the madvr folder to my laptop internall ssd (C:\) ofcourse I did run as admin uninstall.bat folder before moving to ssd.
I did run install.bat as admin again but madvr won't load?

madvr was in sub folder(named madVR) where mpc.exe is they are both in folder named MPC-HC I did move this folder to ssd.

Edit:
if I run install.bat again in D:\ portable hard drive madvr will run even if I start mpc.exe and place it in C:\ drive?

Location of the D drive: D:\MPC-HC
Location of the C drive: C:\Users\Aydın\Videos\Video Players\MPC-HC

SO - I made some headway in isolating the issue. It turns out it ONLY happens when in D3D11 Fullscreen Windowed mode. I have MPC-HC start files in fullscreen automatically - and never thought to try it otherwise until today. Sure enough, starting the file in D3D11 Windowed mode (and leaving it there) did NOT drop any frames after 20-30 seconds. Including skipping ahead to different chapters. Unfortunately, that is no way to watch a movie.

Does this help give anyone any ideas?

PS - Asmodian, that 60+ ms render thing must have been an anomoly, I have tested it a few times and was never able to replicate that spike. Something with full screen windowed d3d11 seems to be the issue. Is exclusive full screen still broken?

Location of the C drive: C:\Users\Aydın\Videos\Video Players\MPC-HC

It seems that madVR doesn't work if the path to its location contains non-latin characters (like ı in Aydın).

Solution: move madVR somewhere else, so the path to it has only latin characters.

Do you have any VRR like G-sync enabled? That is the only thing I can think of that would change with Fullscreen, besides GPU load. G-sync causes issues in madVR for me, unexpected presentation glitches or dropped frames. It is much better than it used to be, but it is still not perfect.

Also, do you have MPC-HC set to use "Prefer Maximum Performance" in the Nvidia control panel? I notice I often get a few presentation glitches, or even a dropped frame, a few seconds after a seek as the GPU tries to pick a lower clock speed after the spike in usage caused by the seek. With Zoom Player set to prefer maximum performance rendering times (and GPU clock speeds) are much more stable.

I can confirm that with mpc-hc, if I set it to adaptive I get the spikes and inconsistant rendering times. Everything is ok with prefer maximum performance. I noticed that no matter what settings I choose, the present queue is not always full, if I set 4 frames in advance, it sometimes show 2-4, and then 3-4. Why is that, bug in windows or in the video driver?

There seems to be a render spike when the frame drop issue happens. On the latest drivers, this spikes up to 69ms on the 5s high. (I tried the oldest driver I was able to install, and the spike was worse on it, 131ms!). (Asmodian, I was wrong before, I WAS able to reproduce the rendering spike with further testing).

I wonder if the 3080 Ti / 3090 is just so darn powerful it can withstand the spike and you never notice a dropped frame?

Although the 2080 Ti is a beast card too, and mgawrisch (on AVS) experienced the same thing....

This spike may only present an issue if the settings being used are already pushing the limits? I run at around 30ms rendering time with my settings, with normal 5s highs around 35-37ms. So I am pretty close to the 41ms zone, and the driver spike is putting the card up to 69ms for a split second.

My only solace is that the newest driver has a lower spike than the oldest driver that I can install, so maybe this is something that is being tweaked and may get resolved soon? I can only hope.

Hi all,

I'm completely new to madVR and I'm looking forward to get to know it better and to get it to work for my setup. I have a HTPC (i5 cpu) with a RTX 3060 TI graphics card, a JVC N5 projector and NAD T778 AVR.

I've installed madVR, MPC-HC, LAV-filter and XY-subs and selected madVR as video renderer in the MPC options. I've setup the AVR and the projector in madVR and have allowed madVR to select 1080p23 and 2160p23 as resolutions it can switch to.

However, when I play a 1080p23 movie in MPC it's like madVr is not activated. The resolution on the screen doesn't change, if I press ctrl + j, nothing happens and I don't get any OSD output. It's as if madVR is simply not running.

If this is not the right thread to post this type of question, please let me know and point me to the correct thread.

Thanks :-)

Also, if your display is a native 4k projector, just have it at 2160p23 and eliminate the 1080p23. That way MadVR will do the upscaling of the image to the PJ. You can set the various upscaling options under MadVR options - it does an EXCELLENT job. I am watching a 1080p series right now, and it looks SO sharp and crisp on my PJ it's almost like I am watching a 4k release!

I'm using profile rules to change 3d-lut and report bt.2020 if I play an hdr movie.
The bt.2020 3d-lut created for hdr was created with maximum screen brightness, since that's what I use while tonemapping hdr.
The bt.709 3d-lut is created without reporting bt.2020 to the tv and a much lower brightness (around 120nits)
Now I'm starting to see sdr content with bt.2020 colorspace.
I can make new 3d-lut for this with lower brightness.
Is there a way to set up profile rules based on colourspace? ie. something like this?

if (HDR) "hdr" -------bt.2020 3d-lut, report bt.2020, max brightness
elseif (primaries = 2020) "bt2020" -----bt.2020 3d-lut, report bt.2020, sdr brightness
else "bt709" -----bt.709 3d-lut, don't report bt.2020, sdr brightness

The only solution I can see right now is to have madvr report bt.2020 all the time and create a new bt.709 3d-lut with these settings, although I imagine it would introduce unecessary banding.
How do you solve this?

So, I ran a BUNCH of tests with various CPU, GPU and Present Cue values.

For 4k files, the glitch went AWAY when setting the present cue to 3 or 4 frames! (CPU @ 16, GPU @ 8) They still dip I believe during this period, but not enough to empty the cue and show a stutter. (I also HAD to select the setting to fill the cues before playback starts)

Interestingly, running 1080p files (my PJ is 4k) STILL has a little bit of a stutter - but its almost like a mini slow-mo look now instead of a whole screen glitch. It ALWAYS happens at the same time give or take 1 second-ish. I tried all sorts of different values for CPU, GPU and Present, but nothing seems to fix it.

Could this be a FLUSH issue of some sort? I have not adjusted the flush settings (since I don't know what each one means). The fact that it's happening at the exact same time could be the GPU flushing???

Huhn - if you still believe it may be an audio sync issue - should I be un-checking the Auto A/V Sync option in LAV Audio Filter? (I bit-stream all my audio through my receiver) (running at 60fps isn't an option for my PJ - it switches to limited mode at that fps. Only stays in full mode up to 30fps) Not to mention I use beta 113 where SM is broken.

Try don't flush everywhere at first, that should be the fastest option (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1405640#post1405640) (it works here fine).

I am using MadVR with MPC-HC.

I don't have HDR, but I can make the following suggestions:

For Netflix, use yellow. You can change that in the Netflix options.

For the regular video player, I use a shade of silver. Add a custom color, enter 192 as the value for red, green, blue.

Gave the flush settings various tries - no change.

I think I am going to be stuck here just waiting and crossing my fingers on new drivers coming out that actually somehow fix themselves.

Huhn, I don't think it is a sync issue. I found some 25fps content, and some 50fps content to try (madvr auto switches to those frame rates when the files are played). They also exhibited the same drop in GPU cue at the roughly the same time.

Making the present cue larger has made the issue a LITTLE less annoying, now it just looks like the video goes 'slo-mo' for a split second VS a whole jarring frame drop glitch.

So unless someone has an 'ah-ha' moment, I guess it just is what it is for now.

PS - Asmodian, what issues were you having that caused you to drop the present cue to 1? I don't want to help with this glitch issue and add a new one!

Are you sure that is not caused by (GPU) frequency fluctuations? Try to take a look at it with nvidiainspector's monitor (you can make it wide and add more to the graphs, hoping it supports the new cards/drivers properly), it should be easily visible on it.
If that will be the case then you can use MSI Afterburner to limit the max performance state of the GPU, so this won't happen (that's what I use for undervolting/underclocking).

All I am sure of is that this is driver related. I was able to prove that with my GTX 1650 card. New driver = this problem, installing 457.xx = no problem. I just can't install 457.xx on the 3060.

I don't know if the HDMI version is different on the 3060? 2.1 vs 2.0b? HDMI Audio? Who knows.

Either way it isn't the 3060 because the same problem was replicated on a GTX 1650. Also another user on a different thread reported the exact same issue to a T - he had a 2080Ti card. He was also able to rectify it by backing down to 457.xx drivers.

Hmmm... I have a 3070 with up to date drivers (unless they changed today) and I'm not experiencing what you are describing, LordX2. GPU is connected through HDMI 2.1 to LG OLED C1 and through DisplayPort to the receiver for audio.

If you could try and describe in detail what your exact problem is, I could try and verify on my end. I read the thread but missed a clear description. If it's there, just point me to it. Because I don't understand if we're talking about something glaring or something almost invisible. I *hate* glitches/drops/repeats, so I would be surprised if something changed negatively in that regard and I'm not perceiving it. Like... I have a button on my remote to reset stat, more often than not after a video has started playing I reset stats just to be sure that everything is at zero (repeats/drops/glitches). Every time I noticed something strange, I activate stats and I very rarely am wrong. So I'm a bit obsessed about this kind of things (like probably most here, I don't know).

Watch your GPU and Present Cue's at the 30 second mark after playing a file. See if they temporarily dip right at that point. (Don't skip to 30 seconds, just play from the beginning).

Also assuming you run in D3D Fullscreen Windowed mode. (see my next post)

I wanted to re-iterate again that this issue ONLY happens when I am in D3D FULLSCREEN Windowed mode.

If I start a file and immediately move my mouse to the seek bar and leave it there (so the file is playing in D3D Windowed mode) - it does NOT happen.

Something is happening in Fullscreen windowed mode.

Does anyone know enough about this stuff to know what would be different between the two modes?

Is there a way to play files where they would take up the whole screen, but JUST be in windowed mode vs fullscreen windowed mode? THAT would probably solve my issue completely.
