Why didn't we settle on simply bicubic50 or 75 (instead of catmull) when downscaling was long ago discussed? :cool:
Catmull-Rom is Bicubic50. Many of the cubic interpolations are simply named after the person(s) that made them popular, but are in a very similar category.

EDIT: When comparing this on a high DPI display like an iPad 3 (sRGB at about 2.2-2.3 gamma) the playtime clock is becoming perfectly readable with clean (great improvement to Lanczos, Catmull and Bicubic), while on the detailed image I am not able to discern the 3 anymore, it looks like "]". With clean, the whole image gets a nice increase of sharpness, and readability and visibility of fine detail is improved, but not to the point of being obtrusive, like the detailed one is.
If you are not viewing the image at a 1:1 pixel ratio, scaling is going on. If you have a high DPI display, the image should look tiny, if it doesn't the OS is scaling up the image for you.
So in these scenarios it's not really much use to take note on it.
(Ignore the above if you are certain you are viewing at 1:1 pixel ratio, and not 1:1 "image size")

I think there is some sort of memory leak introduced in v0.90.4.
In v0.90.3 and before it was like this: I start blank MPC-BE and it takes ~10M of memory. Then I open the video and pause the playback - the player takes for example ~400M. Then I close the file (Ctrl-C) - the player now takes ~40M. But now with the same procedure, after I close the file the player still takes ~300M. The problem is that if I play several files one after another without closing the player, the memory footprint keeps growing with each file, which wasn't the case in previous versions. Everything was tested with the same file and settings, only madVR builds were changed and the player restarted after each try. Please take a look into this issue.

Can't reproduce any leak with 1165 beta and madVR 0.090.8 with my files. Could be certain settings? Could you upload your settings.dat?
What content are you playing?
0.90.8 does use a little more memory than 0.90.3.

Or rather is it the typical crashes and instability of the 3D mode clocks because of GPU Boost's inability to keep stable voltage levels.

I noticed in the changelog for v0.90.7 that "* fixed: some problems when moving madVR to a different monitor", so I tried that version out. I had the exactly the same results as reported above. I noticed the need to press play/pause once or twice as MokrySedeS reported:

I've been having an issue with profile cycling in madVR v0.90.8, (I think it was present in some other recent versions, but I'm not certain). Specifically, the keyboard shortcut for one of my profile groups only cycles through a subset of the profiles that exist for my group.
In detail:
I currently have three different upscaling profiles that I use: "Standard", "Bad" and "Doubled"
I have a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+U) to cycle among the group.
The keyboard shortcut works, but it never cycles to "Doubled".
Instead, it cycles "Auto" → "Standard" → "Bad" → "Auto".
This worked for me in older versions of madVR, for some definition of "older," though I somewhat recently reset all my settings. All three of the profiles have different names and settings. I tried adding a fourth and I still only cycle between the first two (plus "auto").
Strangely, I have another profile group for image enhancement with three profiles and it cycles among all three plus "auto" correctly.
This is obviously more an inconvenience than a serious bug, as I can create direct keyboard shortcuts.

It is a software based crash, not hardware. Maybe on the OS level. :confused:

In that case simply use Bicubic AR LL. Catmull-Rom is identical to Bicubic50. So if you just want something a little bit sharper, try Bicubic75 AR LL, or maybe Bicubic100 AR LL.

Ok. In that case can you please check which exact madVR build introduced the problem for you? Also: Are you using a multi-monitor setup? Finally: In the problem situation: Does the media player still react to anything (e.g. mouse clicks) at all? Or is it totally frozen? In that case please create a freeze report by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Pause/Break, in case that still works.
I've done some more testing, installed the latest Nvidia hotfix drivers 361.82 just to rule out a possible driver problem. Build 0.89.13 introduced the problem, I tried 0.89.12 and 0.88.8 and had no problems using those two.
I'm using a single monitor Benq XL2411z 1920*1080 120Hz, the player doesn't freeze up it still reacts to keyboard commands. Pressing play the dvd tries to play again, you can hear the audio its just that the image is frozen on the screen and won't clear until you exit the player (alt + x) the player exits without any error messages showing up.
to reproduce the problem reset madVR to defaults and then disable all of the trade quailty for performance options, play a dvd and then stop playback the last buffered frame will be stuck on screen. If you enable use a seperate device for presentation (Vista or newer) with the trade quality for performance settings disabled it seems to work around the problem (no stuck frame after stopping).
This problem only happens with Zoom Player, I can't reproduce it with MPC-HC using the latest madVR build.

LOL I've been testing mVR since day 1, before it arrived all we had was the hiccupy HR. Yes, it is tiny, that's why I used this in addition to a normal DPI IPS in the first place. There is no scaling going on, I am watching both with it's native 1.501px × 195px resolution. If I scale on the iPad, the results are practially the same, since they are all scaled with the same factor, which is also why madshi took the additional time to present the comparison shots as one image. The nasty edges of detailed become even more apparent and clean looks even better in comparison when you are scaling.
The results are somewhat comparable to watching upscaled SD that is already too sharp with a sharp upscaler like Lanczos or Bicubic >50. It will look quite ugly, since all the pixel edges of our low resolution become so much more apparent. That's why a lot of people prefer a softer algorithm, because it looks more natural, even though it might not peel out the very last details, which however, were probably never meant to be seen on some material in the first place, since it defeats the purpose of image depth (background detail should not be as sharp as front detail, neither should front detail be uber-sharpened, just because you want back detail to get visible).

I can totally relate to this. My wife hates when I pull up the overlay (I can't get through a movie without checking it), and my i1Display stays plugged in. Though I don't leave it hanging over the TV unless I'm using it. :p

Hey madshi how about a compact OSD? Just showing dropped/delayed frames, render time etc? Something that can be checked during playback that's a little less intrusive.

BTW I just realized that it's possible to use NNEDI doubling together with sxbr quad on top hah :D
All this said it's hard to deny that SSIM is far more effective than any kind of bicubic downscaling duh, but NNEDI3 & SR even with a strength of 1 are extremely sharp all together.....might try my luck adding a very slightly blurring PS script or something as it's pointless feeding an inferior downscaler with an oversharp picture and I'm not willing to make do without SR(because I love what it does to motion blur) and NNEDI3(because it's unmatched for lowres).
What I would really need is softer SR coz even a strength of 1 is über-sharp, if SSIM is not subjective at all being mathematically accurate and all, any chance for softer SR strengths please? sharp doubling + sharp SR + sharp downscaling end up making everything look like a friggin pixar anime =(

I agree...Thansk to madshi and Nev for implementing 3D. I still enjoy 3D very much and even when I go 4K in the future, the display I buy will have to at least support 1080p 3D too. Since I mostly use projectors and not TV, I'm waiting patiently for 4K projectors to become more mainstream.
Can't wait for 3D iso support from LAV/madVR too :D

And to make matters worse I eventually double luma SR on low-res as I got the "after 2X upscaling step" checked so yeah, both luma & chroma SR would seriously need lower strengths please......especially now that I've found out that I can combo 2x NNEDI3 with 4x sxbr hah, need to chew on this http://forum-images.hardware.fr/images/perso/cur%20bris.gif
and BTW, I definitely prefer LL for SSIM and don't like the 1.6 gamma option as it does kill picture depth.

Anyone else having issues with dragging MPC-HC from screen to screen with the latest MadVR update? When you drag it to another screen now the video freezes and you need to pause and play the video again. Around version 0.90.4 the video would just keep playing.

No, NNEDI3 is not restricted to DX11 mode.
However it can cause problems if CUDA or other OpenCL applications are also running due to a bug in Nvidia's drivers.

Yes, I've read about that as well. 3D support beyond frame-packed may not be worth the development time if 3D content is no longer going to be created.
No sense in eliminating support which is already in place.

How will madVR handle UHD bluray? Let's say the color space is Rec. 2020, but the info is limited to DCI-P3, and you're watching it on a sRGB/Rec. 709 display. Will it look normal, and will you need a 3D LUT? What if you're watching the same content on a wide gamut display, that supports >98% DCI-P3. Will you be able to take advantage of the new standard?
I know windows is bad at color management, but will we never move to higher gamut monitors/tv's/projectors for this sole reason? Seems like you must to benefit from the new larger color space and the higher 10 bit color depth.

This isn't about handling UHD Bluray on HDR displays though, This is about converting HDR content to SDR displays.
Madshi already stated that he'll only be able to implement HDR support when HDR will be supported at GPU/Driver/API level, which won't happen until Arctic Islands next summer.
The good news is that Cyberlink have confirmed they are working on UHD Bluray support for PowerDVD, which means that we'll get some BDXL players able to read the content. From there, everything is possible...

GPU Nvidia GTX660 is not used for decoding.
I downloaded THIS (http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=90) nice 4k 10bit HEVC 60fps demo and it stutters even with madVR on Nearest Neighbor on all scalers, and all quality compromise options are on, no dithering, no smooth motion.
The CPU runs maxed out on all cores...
BUT, when I select EVR (Custom) as my video renderer, everything is smooth without dropped frames.
I was expecting madVR to be able to play the top spec of the UHD 4K standard, at least with its lowest settings on a "not so old" PC.
Anyone cares to help me solve this?

About HDR support, how is HDR metadata embedded? Is it part of the video track? Or is it containter-dependent? Are there any tools to create/modify/read this metadata?

Maybe madVR has some more CPU overhead than EVR, I suppose it would run fine with a 960 with DXVA2/copyback.
Probably you won't be able to play some difficult clips with EVR either.

I don't think there's anything specific you need to do to enable the LAV DVD subtitle export. Can you create a small sample for me to double check / reproduce this problem on my PC?
I looked into this. It seems there is only an issue when you playback a DVD as a disc. If you open a vob file directly, either on the disc or one ripped to your hard drive, the subtitles are moved, although they are a weird grey colour in this instance. See the screenshots below:

And you're 100% sure that this does never ever occur on older madVR builds? Can you please also double check 32bit to make sure the problem is not specific to 64bit?
I can confirm that the crash happens consistently in 32bit and 64bit as of v0.90.8. I can't test older versions since videohelp.com seems to be down, but I'll report on them when it comes back up.

I have GTX 660 too but with i5 4430. I still get frame drops even using EVR-CP, the CPU get maxed, too heavy for my CPU to decode 10bit 4K HEVC.

HEVC 4K 10-bit is *extremely* CPU intensive still, you would need an absolute high-end CPU to decode it, and even then it may not work entirely fluidly depending on the bitrate.
If you want an old PC to handle such content, your best bet is to buy a GPU with support for decoding it.

HEVC 4K 10-bit is *extremely* CPU intensive still, you would need an absolute high-end CPU to decode it, and even then it may not work entirely fluidly depending on the bitrate.
If you want an old PC to handle such content, your best bet is to buy a GPU with support for decoding it.

I can confirm this, I have a 3770K@4GHz and I used to be unable to play UHD10bitsHEVC with MadVR without stutter using x86. Exodus would stutter at shot transitions, and Life of Pi was stutter fest. Now that I've switched to 64bits, I can play both of these these smoothly with my HD7870, although I have to max the queues and lower processing in MadVR re chroma upscaling etc. But it's smooth at least :).

Apparently my i7 3770k (3900 Mhz each core) is no good for UHD with madVR.... :(
GPU Nvidia GTX660 is not used for decoding.
I downloaded THIS (http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=90) nice 4k 10bit HEVC 60fps demo and it stutters even with madVR on Nearest Neighbor on all scalers, and all quality compromise options are on, no dithering, no smooth motion.
The CPU runs maxed out on all cores...
BUT, when I select EVR (Custom) as my video renderer, everything is smooth without dropped frames.
I was expecting madVR to be able to play the top spec of the UHD 4K standard, at least with its lowest settings on a "not so old" PC.
Anyone cares to help me solve this?
I couldn't play that clip either with my GTX950. Strange because I can play similar clips fine (hardware decoding). Rendering time are fine, but the queues don't fill and it continuously dropped frames.

As said, madVR probably uses a bit more cpu than EVR, and your cpu is already at 100% trying to decode, so there isn't any processor power left. If you were getting stutters but your cpu/gpu was not at 100%, then you would have a problem.

madvr is more GPU heavy than EVR though. perhaps your CPU might still be fine if your GPU were better, cant tell for sure.
MadVR uses a little bit more CPU than EVR but if madVR is pushing you over the edge you are very close to being unable to decode it fast enough even when using EVR. Can you get 4.0 GHz out of your 3770K? ;)
Using x86 I cannot play that video smoothly with a i7-5960X at 4.2GHz and a 980Ti at 1506MHz, it isn't the GPU that is the problem it is the CPU. My i7-5960X cannot keep the decode queue full using LAV's 32-bit HEVC decoder. 64-bit is pretty much required for 4K 10-bit HEVC software decoding today.

This isn't about handling UHD Bluray on HDR displays though, This is about converting HDR content to SDR displays.
Madshi already stated that he'll only be able to implement HDR support when HDR will be supported at GPU/Driver/API level, which won't happen until Arctic Islands next summer.
The good news is that Cyberlink have confirmed they are working on UHD Bluray support for PowerDVD, which means that we'll get some BDXL players able to read the content. From there, everything is possible...
HDR support is working now. At least it is on my 1080p display. madVR takes the HDR luminance values and rescales them to any display by decoding this information before it reaches the display, so the display doesn't have to do this decoding itself.
The same can be said for the color gamut, which is matrixed to the gamut set in calibration.
What won't work is the playback of copyright-protected UHD content.

I gave it a shot with a i7 4770/HD 7850 w/64-bit madVR/LAV/MPC-HC. Knew HEVC@60fps wouldn't play right but what the hell :) After tweaking for max performance it was show time :(
Finally opted for EVR-CP/nearest neighbor when I noticed that the "frame rate" was over 100fps and looking to go higher while feeding a 60fps display... Don't have a 3D rig here but could this be due to the vid being 3D. If so I suspect the only way to play it right would be with full hardware decoding in the GPU..which is kinda scarce at the moment. Looks like upgrade time..again ;) Cum on bak to the red side Jim :) :)

If the queues aren't filling, your settings are probably still too aggressive.
