Yes, Qaq is right. Furthermore don't move/rename/delete the madVR folder after you've run the install.bat.

I can't seem to reproduce this. If you still have this problem with the next madVR build, can you send me your potplayer configuration files (skin etc)? Maybe it only occurs with customized skins?
I use this skin and the latest PotP update: http://www.mediafire.com/?22gncja7bvpv4p0

And yes, there used to be some internal PotPlayer problems w/ third party skins that didn't occur w/ the stock one(mostly about the seek bar). Everything's always worked like a charm w/ mVR up to 0.36, though.

Hmmm... I've tried to reproduce the problem with your skin on my XPSP3 PC. I've managed to reproduce it once with about 300 tries. That's not often enough for me to really figure out what's going wrong. How often does it occur for you? Please try with v0.40.

madVR v0.40 released

http://madshi.net/madVR.zip

* turning desktop composition back on should be without delay now
* DXVA NV12 connections are refused now
I plan to use the keep the options "always disable desktop composition", "never disable desktop composition" and "while media player is in fullscreen mode". I plan to remove the options "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" and "while madVR is in exclusive mode". Anybody opposed to this? Now is the time to say so.

It happened fairly often...and now w/ 0.40 I get the zombie frame problem on the menus, and it's rather easy to reproduce: http://thumbnails37.imagebam.com/12123/f948b9121221716.jpg (http://www.imagebam.com/image/f948b9121221716)

I haven't managed to get it w/ the PotPlayer transport bar yet.

The file you listed there is very low resolution. Make sure to pick some good upscaler, if you don't like pixelated, try something smooth.

Is that really XP? Your menus look a lot different to how they look on my PC (bigger and different fonts etc)! Why is that? FWIW, the menus on my PC don't show this problem, but as I said, they look very different (like context menus in any other application). So the big question is why they look so different in your screenshot.

It's a stock XPSP3 box, yes. I use big fonts(I know it's bad, but I like it like that :p).
That's what PotP looks like: http://thumbnails40.imagebam.com/12124/cac54a121235908.jpg (http://www.imagebam.com/image/cac54a121235908) and none of these problems ever occured w/ <0.37.

PS: this link found on google looks rather similar: http://img.brothersoft.com/screenshots/softimage/p/potplayer-394053-1281581161.jpeg

Please no.
I use potplayer with a remote control, the only way I found to have the potplayer OSD and exclusive mode is "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" mode because potplayer needs aero for the OSD.

I use potplayer with a remote control, the only way I found to have the potplayer OSD and exclusive mode is "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" mode because potplayer needs aero for the OSD.
2 questions:

(1) What exactly do you mean with "potplayer needs aero for OSD"? Does the OSD not work without aero or what do you mean?

(2) Why does "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" work better for you than keeping aero enabled all the time?

tschi
26th February 2011, 17:42
1) Yes, the OSD doesn't work with madVR if aero is off.
2) Before 0.39 I had some trouble when I jump to other frame with my remote control with exclusive mode + aero, the video was jerky.
I made some tests right now, and it seems this problem is gone and I can have aero + exclusive mode + remote control
Anyway, from your point of view what's the benefit to disable aero ?
I had some problem with 0.39 with aero, but randomly I had "error : failed to created 3D device" not sure if it related to aero
(ATI 5770 + win7 32bit+ catalyst 11.2)

1) Yes, the OSD doesn't work with madVR if aero is off.
Does it not show? Or does it show, but looks weird/corrupted? Or does it show, but you can't use it? Some more details would be helpful.

Anyway, from your point of view what's the benefit to disable aero ?

I means the osd (time information on top left) is not showed when aero is off.
That's the first time that I hear that an OSD only shows when Aero is turned on. Can you post a screenshot of the time information on top left? How can I turn that on? Would like to reproduce that here.

first is with madvr 0.39 and madvr 0.40 (and all madvr past versions)
second is with evr sync

Hmmmm... That looks like nearest neighbor sampling. A few questions for you:

(1) Which luma upsampling algorithm have you selected in the madVR settings dialog?
(2) Which MPEG1 decoder are you using with madVR?
(3) Which MPEG1 decoder are you using with EVR?
(4) Are you sure that madVR is used and not some other renderer? Please turn the madVR OSD on (Ctrl+J). Does it show?

I plan to remove the options "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" and "while madVR is in exclusive mode". Anybody opposed to this? Now is the time to say so.

I can agree that these are redundant because "while media player is in fullscreen mode" basically does the same thing with the exclusive mode (and we can't use windowed and exclusive mode at the same time...).

Well, there is a difference between those two modes. E.g. if you right click to show a context menu, the media player is still in fullscreen mode, but madVR is not in exclusive mode, anymore. That said, I don't think it's really necessary to have Aero enabled when a context menu shows. But that's just me, that's why I'm asking if anybody doesn't agree.

I've asked you 4 questions. Please answer all of them, otherwise I can't help. You can check which decoder is used by right clicking on the video and checking "filters". The decoder should be listed there.

There seems to be a distortion problem with madVR connecting to certain filters which was introduced in 0.37

I've seen the problem with the NVIDIA PureVideo MPEG2 decoder (http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder_1.02-223-trial.html) playing MPEG2, and a similar problem with WMVideo Decoder DMO playing various WMV samples.

madVR 0.36 vs madVR 0.40 logs (http://www.mediafire.com/?wr5ggw8r3w8b9h3)

Taking a quick look through the beginning of the logs, here are some differences I noticed with an mpeg2 sample and the NVIDIA software decoder:

madVR 0.36 (working)
CheckMediaType
SetMediaType
HandleNewMediaType
the decoder has switched to a new media type, but it's not exactly what we expected
expected media type:
lSampleSize: 518400
AvgTimePerFrame: 333667
biPlanes: 1
biSizeImage: 518400
Direct3D_Init()
Direct3D_ResetDevice(width = 640, height = 480);

madVR 0.40 (corruption)
fixed allocation size from 552960 to 737280 bytes
lSampleSize: 552960
AvgTimePerFrame: 333666
biPlanes: 3
biSizeImage: 0

If logs alone aren't enough, I can upload some samples.

About tschi's problem, I just tested this myself since I also use PotPlayer (with leeperry's skin), and I have verified that Aero being on or off is not the entire issue with OSD messages not being displayed. With Aero off and using EVR-CP, I could still see the OSD messages. This is how I tested.

1. open PotPlayer
2. play video (Aero gets disabled)
3. close video file but keep potplayer open
4. switch video renderer to EVR-CP
5. play video again (Aero is still disabled and with EVR-CP, can see OSD messages again)

Once I close PotPlayer, even if MadVR wasn't the last renderer used, MadVR kicks in and re-enables Aero.

My setup consists of PotPlayer with the latest MadVR using FSE and the always off option. (disable desktop composition option)

The Arcsoft Video decoder still seems to connect to 0.40 in NV12 DXVA mode and produce a green screen in XP.

Once DXVA is disabled in the decoder, picture is fine.

Hmmmmm... The logs look different, which is expected, since I changed some things in v0.37. However, I don't see a real bug in the logs. So I'm not sure where the problem comes from. It would be great if I could reproduce the problem somehow. The WMV videos I've tried here seem to play fine. Could you please upload a little sample? Please let me know which OS and which exact decoder to use. Thanks!

P.S: If possible with the WMVideo Decoder DMO, because the GPU in my dev machine is an AMD/ATI, so I can't use the PureVideo decoder, I guess.

The Arcsoft Video decoder still seems to connect to 0.40 in NV12 DXVA mode and produce a green screen in XP.
Can you please post the MPC-HC pin info here between decoder and madVR? Thx.

If possible with the WMVideo Decoder DMO, because the GPU in my dev machine is an AMD/ATI, so I can't use the PureVideo decoder, I guess.

Actually the PureVideo decoder is not limited to nVidia GPU, it also works with ATI + adaptive HW deinterlace options. I used to test some videos by that decoder with very old Radeon 9500 under Windows XP.

With nVidia card, it is definitely the best quality one under Windows XP. Yet it has some a/v sync problems with some HDTV / Vob samples on my hand. The problem is gone if the MPEG-2 decoder is changed to any other one. (Or at the HW platform I did before. I did not see any of those samples' TS or PES contents has any bad mux condition... )

Fortunately this issue is finally gone under Windows 7, and the video quality by MS DTV-Decoder + DXVA + EVR is just as good as that by PureVideo decoder.

So I guess you can take the PureVideo quality as the first goal to be achieved for madVR. :)

Hmmmm... I can reproduce that. It seems to me that PotPlayer intentionally only shows these OSD messages when Aero is on. On XP they don't show at all with madVR. My best guess is that PotPlayer's OSD doesn't work well with madVR without Aero. That's probably because it's half transparent. Anyway, it doesn't seem to be a bug in madVR. Of course it would be nice to have the OSD messages with madVR, too, in XP and with Aero disabled. That should work with a future madVR version, once I've added proper support for media player OSD messages.

What? But seriously... What????
The default WMP with standard EVR is a garbage when compared with madVR. (The EVR Custom Presenter in MPC-HC is much closer to madVR after you set it up well and you disabled the "damage features" in the VGA driver. But the default WMP+EVR...)

mr.duck
27th February 2011, 15:04
PureVideo is complete garbage. As is Radeon's default 'enhancements' in their drivers.

The best quality is with MS DTV-Decoder + DXVA + EVR for me (with all GPU enhancements disabled).

But then again I do like to use bilinear resizing and need to deinterlace. EVR is fast and responsive too with EVR CP I get subtitles also. So I think madVR has some way to go but I will be keeping an eye on it :)

As I said before, "video renderer" is not madVR. I think the "microsoft decoder video mpeg1" can not connect to madVR because it isn't able to output YV12. Try ffdshow for decoding.

madVR v0.40 released

http://madshi.net/madVR.zip

* turning desktop composition back on should be without delay now
* DXVA NV12 connections are refused now
I plan to use the keep the options "always disable desktop composition", "never disable desktop composition" and "while media player is in fullscreen mode". I plan to remove the options "during exclusive -> windowed mode switch" and "while madVR is in exclusive mode". Anybody opposed to this? Now is the time to say so.

Madshi one question:
Have you add a counter to display repeated frame or not with your update? If not Can I hope that you add a counter or green and red curve in a future release?

thanks.

I think a "dropped" and "repeated" frames counter is much more useful than these graphs. madVR does not count "repeated" frames yet, though.

I went ahead and tracked down an acceptable WMV sample to upload, just in case the problem had a different cause than the NVIDIA decoder. As you noticed, the problem doesn't happen with all WMVs, but I'm unsure why that is.

Thanks, that's helpful.

For your interest, the decoders showing corruption behave very weird. madVR asks them "would you be willing to send the data in resolution X?". They reply with "yes". Then madVR tells them to send the data in resolution X. However, when they start sending frames, they say: "oh, btw, I'm sending in resolution Y", but actually they're sending in resolution X. Yes, it's really that bad.

with ffsdhow the video is totally grey
Can you upload a small sample of the file? I'd like to check it out here. If there's a bug in madVR, the sample will help me fix the bug. Otherwise I should be able to tell you with which decoder/setting you should get good image quality with madVR.

madVR v0.41 released

http://madshi.net/madVR.zip

* added workaround for buggy decoders (hopefully it breaks nothing else)
* added forced redrawing of all GUI stuff after exclusive -> windowed switch
I hope that the GUI redrawing problems after exclusive -> windowed switch are fixed now, but I'm not sure because I can't really reproduce them on my PCs.

thanks for the new build!

having an AR problem, though...it's never occured w/ older versions(I upscale in ffdshow and then let mVR downscale, in order to improve the accuracy of LSF and my other Avisynth scripts).

What is an example of resolution "X" and resolution "Y"?

Is it something like, the video is 1280x720, madVR requests 2048x720, decoder says it is sending 1280x720, but actually is sending 2048x720?

Thanks. The connection information looks clean to me. Which means that it's a bug in the ArcSoft decoder. There's nothing I can do about it, I fear.

Thanks for investigating. FFdshow is probably a better solution anyway for mpeg2 with subtitle support and it seems to handle non DXVA 1080P via MadVR ok on my pc.

It does on my PC.

Thanks for the quick response and fix. Works as 0.36 did with the Purevideo decoder.

Seems OK, judging by lots of right clicks on a video, menu comes up as expected.
:thanks:

* EDIT *
No... still have menu disappearing at times, in addition to old frame etc.
Then again, no big deal.
