Yeah if you check the OSD, you can see if things are changing and what they're changing to. If you can't see differences then it's down to your display/viewing distance.
I would hope you know what to look for but in case you don't, luma scalers and sharpeners make the most difference when looking at SDR content.

At 2 meters luma scaler might not even be that obvious if the material resolution is high..
Sharpen is very obvious..
Chroma is very difficult to discern at distance.
If one's adamant about seeing what's happening, you can Zoom-in and the difference will be very obvious.

There probably is a difference, but you can't perceive it on that display. What setting are you referring to?

On my ATI card, it will only HDR on fullscreen for playback, madtpg doesn't HDR at all.
My nvidia works fine, hdr triggers on windowed , but unnecessary because the madtpg will trigger nv hdr as well.
I don't get it. Why don't you manually activate HDR in Win 10 display options, just for the need of calibrating ? When it is done, you can always go back to normal behavior of triggering HDR With regular madvr playback.

Please quote the error as text (often you can press Ctrl+C in a dialog), or upload the picture to an external image hoster (frupic, tinypic, imgur, ...). Approval of attachments by a moderator often takes a long time here.

The calibration results probably wouldn't be accurate because it's a different render path ?

I would expect to see some difference with image enhancements. There is likely some type of change if the rendering times in the OSD are increasing when any of the image enhancements are checked. This would imply the shader is active.
Try checking a few of the image enhancements at the same time and set them to a high value. I would also expect to see an immediate change, but it can be hard for your brain to adjust by simply changing a setting and looking at the screen for an immediate change. It is often better to watch some familiar content for a period of time, and then change the settings once more. Watching the display for an extended period makes it easier to determine if something has changed from the settings you were accustomed to previously. Your brain sometimes needs time to adjust. Display or color calibration can be like that.

For SDR, I've made a 3dlut from the displaycal patch generator, and also another identical setting 3dlut from madtpg generator,
They look extremely different, especially in dark tones.
So, I get what you're saying about in theory, but if it's not the same path, it's simply not the same image..

We don't know, and I don't have anything to compare it to until the AMD issue is looked into.
The MADTPG would also be in OSHDR mode instead of AMDHDR mode, again different paths..

I use two players at the same time one with default render and the other with madvr, in pc i can see the diference but in the projector ther e is no diference at all, i will try to connect the htpc to the monitor and see what happens

Depends on the scene a lot with this one. Just find one with clouds and change this value.. And anyone claiming they can't see a difference has medical issues. First scene in World of HDR highlights the difference rather well here.

With image enhancements i see this on my monitor with my pc when i change in pause, but i can't see the diference in my projector with my htpc doing the same

Left one is 4k HDR with madvr in a 1080 display the other the blue ray, if i do the same in the htpc they are shown almost equal except for the color, not the sharpen, maybe the htpc is not doing downscaling?

There's a huge difference between those two pictures, The one on the left is considerably sharper.
Look at the rocks.. look at the jagginess of the wires on the left image that run along the roof of that tent.

Ive been battling the Anamorphic mode on madvr for days and still dont understand what im doing wrong....
I upscale all my ripped BDs to 4K through madvr. I use JRiver on my JVC X9900 projector, with an Isco L lens and cineslide.
When I engage Anamorphic mode in madvr (set to default 4/3) the strectch is correct but the sides of the 16:9 window come in closer to a 4:3 window. For the correct stretch size the window sould be the same width as the 16:9 one when the A stretch is activated in madvr. I have the same height with the correct stretch but the width is not to the sides of the 16:9 screen, I need it to be the same width as 16:9 as the lens when engaged stretches the width correctly to the sides of the scope screen.
I hope you guys who use the A stretch on madvr and 4K upscaling can help me...
I have tried a multitude of Window sizing but cant understand how to get this right Im afraid...

Yes i can see it in my pc but doing the same in my htpc I don't see it with the projector, maybe the nvidia card? In the osd can't find if it's appliying the sharpen, left image i what i want to get in my htpc but i change the values and it does nothing

As was said previously, use the OSD (Ctrl-J) to determine that madVR is actually changing things whilst connected to the projector. If that can be seen then it's related to your viewing setup, in which case it would make sense to only change values that provide you a visual benefit. I have not seen this issue before, my assumption is that it's likely your projector that doesn't show the changes in image well.

Internal processing can "undo" much of the benefit of madVR, especially if any scaling is being done.

Did you capture that screenshot of the madVR OSD with the video paused? It looks like it was and we need to see the unpaused OSD to give useful advice.
Also, make sure Focus Assist is completely off, all the options in the focus assist settings page should be off.
Hi Guys,
I was thinkin' that my old GTX 970 was not enought to reproduce 4K HEVC files @60fps but this is not the case.
I've created a new HTPC with NVIDIA RTX 2070, cpu i7 7700T and a new asus mobo pci express 3x. Win 10.
Latest Nvidia drivers. Focus assist deactivated.
Still have massive (very massive)drop frames with those 60fps files ... My queue is always empty ...also with low rendering times.
The attached pictures are taken during reproduction...
MadVR is the latest with V39 beta build installed.
The 60fps files are on an SSD drive.
Some days ago I've tested this also on a Pc of a friend that has a 1070ti and dropping frames with HEVC 60fps files still there ...
Please give some help.

In the lav filter image attached to previous post there is: hardware accelerator =none.
Maybe this is the problem?

You need to upload the pictures to an image site, as it takes a long time to get approved on site.

You're probably right. HEVC requires a lot of CPU power to decode directly because of the complexity of the compression algorithms.

I agree, a 7700T cannot decode 4K HEVC in real time, using software decoding.
Try changing it to D3D11 or DXV2 (copy-back).

Set the hardware device to "Automatic (Native)" not the RTX 2070.
It has also been advised to use enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode with the RTX cards.

If I remember well at the biginnin' lav decoder was set "automatic native" but the massive drop frames still there.
This evening I'll verify it again

It is because the graphics card is choking, others have mentioned issues unless in FSE with the new cards, also I see no mention of HDR on the OSD.
Try HDR passthrough as well before you use the newer HDR options (which you have switched off in Trade for Performance mostly) and work from there, but do what the others have said first.

there are many types of HEVC not all a hardware decodable.
check the demo you linked me first this file has hardware compatibility.

Hey all,
So hopefully this is a simple question to answer, but I've been fighting this for some time and I don't seem to be any closer to solving it.
I have a 21:9 Ultrawide monitor. It works great watching films that are shot in CinemaScope.
Some films (mostly Nolan films) will change aspect ratio from 16:9 (for IMAX shots, for example) and then for normal shots will be 21:9. I'm trying to figure out a way to show all content with as few bars as possible. This would mean:
Zooming 21:9 shots to crop the letterboxes
NOT Zooming the 16:9 footage and showing pillarboxes.
I can't seem to get MadVR to do this. I've tried dozens of combinations of settings and the best I can do is have it either zoomed to 21:9 all the time (losing picture during 16:9 shots) or just showing pillarboxes ALL the time and then also showing letterboxes during 21:9 shots.
Here are the settings I have:
*Disable scaling if image size changes... Tried all different settings, currently on 3 lines or less
* Move Subtitles into active area
* Automatically Detect hard coded black bars (yes)
* if black bars change quickly ... don't switch more than every 5 seconds (tried disabling this too).
* Notify ... immediately after every change
* Zoom small black bars away
* crop black bars
With these settings, nothing seems to be happening at all. Dunkirk will just play in 16:9 with pillar boxes and letterboxes in 21:9 scenes.
If I enable:
* If there are big black bars... zoom the bars away completely
Then I get the entire movie at 21:9 with no boxes anywhere, because it's zooming them away... but then I'm losing a chunk of the frame.
Basically - MadVR either lets me have no boxes (pillar or letter) or just leaves it alone. This would work if I had a 16:9 monitor and I was playing 16:9 content that switched to 21:9 because the bigger frame is my native aspect ratio, but when the native ratio is wider than the film ratio, it seems like this causes issues.
For now, I have to flip in and out of zoom levels with keyboard shortcuts, but this sucks. Am I screwed? Is there no way to fix this?

change the hardware decoder from dxva native or d3d11 to DXVA copyback.
blackbar detection is run on the CPU and with a native decoder the CPU never sees the image.

the examples are more about the the type of dithering in an ideal situation we don't want the image from madVR to be dithered by the driver.
so the only useful situation i can see here is the 6 bit dithering which madVR can already do...

not selecting a GPU results in native mode which is supposed to be faster but you can't use all blackbar detection features and other stuff like deinterlancing.
selecting a GPU is better for compatibility but DXVA copyback does the same and DXVA copyback was faster than D3D11 copyback if i remember correctly but not that it matters.

but the non-selection of the GPU in the lav is for 4k hdr files or for everything? me with 1080p material I feel very comfortable with DVXA copyback and I have no problems, reading the message of warner I came the doubt

warners advise is clearly worth a try but it doesn't mean you have to do or use that.

I could never notice NVidia performing any dithering by itself, at least not in games or video playback without madVR and dithering-enabling filters/renderers.
Perhaps this was not the most appropriate place to post that info, but I generally wanted to know how to truly enable NVidia dithering for desktop. That way Netflix content gets dithered... I doubt we will ever see madVR support for Microsoft Store Netflix App. Therefore driver-forced dithering is the only way to enable it for Netflix...

you missing the point there is nothing to dither after your netflix app/browser.
and games send presentation frame to the driver if they are not before that then there simply isn't anything to dither which wouldn't be dithered anyway.
it is very simple to test if nvidia is dithering.
you take a gray scale load it in madVR with 10 presentation and you force your GPU driver to send 8 bit RGB.
if you don't see 256 steps the driver is clearly dithering.
In short, all displays dither but not all do it properly for various reasons (ex: TN panel displays).
You will either benefit from this, or see no difference at all.
If you see no differences with any of the options then congratulations your display does dithering proper.
if your display is fine with dithering you don'T see anything different?? that's not how this works...

God Damn It, just noticed AMD Dxva 4KHDR causes banding.. That's it, Final Straw, I'm selling my RX580..
Not going to sit around waiting for fixes for 3 years..
Sad, because I got a great deal on this card, Overclocks like a champ and runs super cool.
Gonna have to buy another 1060, sigh... all these ebay miner 1060s look so ragged/shi77y ..
