One thing is clear from the latest HDR test build release notes and bug that appeared....the Envy IS running madvr...at least, a code path within it. Because the release notes mention this and the bug he had to fix was because of some Envy code. But, remember that what they're using in Envy is not off the shelf nVidia cards. Who knows what else is under the covers of that thing. :) Nonetheless, I am quite happy I bought an RTX card. Even if the features don't 1:1 match the Envy in terms of new algorithms, I've got about 7.9 TFLOPS to play with on my card, so, right in the middle of the base and the pro. I'm very excited for the future of madvr!

Okay this is the follow up to my scenario posted above that I was hoping to get some un-influenced opinions on before going into detail about the puzzle I can't figure out.
From above:
CPU: FX-8350
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1866 CL 7
GPU: R9 270X 2GB
No hardware decoding
HDMI 1.3 output
In your expert opinions, Is it possible to play 4K HDR Bluray remux using madVR?
Now the puzzle I can't figure out is, I can! When I got my 55" C9 OLED I tried an HDR UHD Bluray Remux and it was a messy slideshow. So I just used the TV to play back these files. There was no way my GPU could do what I want, right? However, by accident I loaded up a 4k HDR "calibration" file and to my astonishment it played perfectly! WTF?!?!?
So I did a deeper dive into some madVR settings. Turns out when the bitrate spikes to about 100Mbps queues would collapse and the slideshow would start... But increasing queues with only 2GB VRAM won't work, right? But it does! And the bigger the Present queue the better! It makes no sense. Since Present queues >4 make 1080p playback problematic. I just don't understand how these big queues are possible with 4k. Here is a screenshot of madVR OSD:

The real kicker is my GPU is running out of VRAM, constantly dipping into system RAM and then clearing and repeating the cycle over and over:

So how is this possible? Could the very low latency of my RAM help? And why do bigger Present queues work with 4k but not work well with 1080p upscaled to 4k. And big CPU and GPU queues are even worse for HD content. I needed to create profiles for the queue sizes! That doesn't make sense. I wish we could create profiles for the Present queue, but I found a middle ground with 8... still okay for the 4k and the problems with 1080p are acceptable.
Anyway, sorry for the long post... What are your thoughts?

they are using the same TU102-300X-K1-A1 like every other 2080 ti there is nothing different from it and they will most likely not even get the chip from nvidia. nvidia doesn't deliver so low volumes.

but a 2080 ti can't do 100 TFLOP at 32 bit but only at 16 bit. just saying and no HDMI 2.1.
the price was to be expected and he clarifies i don't have to "care" about this product which is transparent and fair.
madshi should really clarify if madVR will use tensor cores in the future or not that's a yes for me "- Pro Cinema: about ~10 TFLOPS, plus ~100 TFLOPS for AI / Neural Network" but not a 100 % yes from him.
which is something we should know IMHO.
I'm sure he cares about participating in his own business. Not wanting to kill off this project or limit his ability as a developer to pursue his own interests are likely what he is referring to.
The price sounds strange when things started out open-source, but I think the base model is still priced below his competition in the Lumagen Radiance Pro. I doubt the Lumagen folks are bilking everyone with its pricing.

He made it very clear that he will retain control over madvr development. Nothing on that will happen without his input. And he said there will continue to be a free version going forward, as well. So people can relax on that issue. I'm curious to see what the commercial version brings in terms of functionality. I suspect some of his new algorithms that he's developing for the Envy will probably show up there, but, this is only a guess. Very exciting times for us!

When I researched FPGAs, I didn't find any (that are even remotely near to what we can pay) which have the GFLOPS that I need.
what do you think an custom nvidia card cost.
is it even possible without million to mass produce a new die at processes used by nvidia.

this is a very low volume device specifically the first ones aimed at a group that pays high dollar for there projector and it is far more capable then a lumagen and priced similar. the hardware alone will cost 1.5-3.0 k and that not what they are selling they are selling the algorithms the work that has been input into writing these algorithms. how else should they be able to even make money with such a product.
i'm pretty sure "all" algorithm will show on madVR at one time as long as he develops them.

So it's essentially a 2080 in the pro. That seems reasonable and means that in theory the HTPC's that have the RTX cards could run similar algorithms that the Envy can drive. That's quite exciting. I did ask about the automatic algorithm "tuning" that the Envy can do (if you select multiple algorithms that require a lot of processing power it can auto tune them to give you the best picture and performance) showing up in madvr and he said that it'd be too difficult given all the variations in hardware on an HTPC. I jokingly (sort of) said he could limit it to RTX cards. LMAO :D That would be a sweet feature, even if it's in the "pro" commercial version of madvr.

The margins are probably a lot smaller than you think and you are forgetting about the countless other expenses involved in running a business. A low volume product often requires a higher price just to cover these costs, let alone make a modest profit.
I meant madVR was free, not open-source.

:) Not to mention that (I assume and don't actually know this) madvr was "only" madshi's hobby beside of his full time/contracting jobs in the last 10 years. Now this has been changed: Envy and madvr will be his full time job! :)

When I try to play a file with build 87 my TV turns black and then reports no input signal !! After turning off and on the TV MPC-BE has loaded the file but with wrong refresh rates, etc.
Build 86 works perfectly fine.

Yeah you won't get a response to test build issues here. You should post any issues you have with them in the proper thread on avsforum. You may want to try downloading it again and see if that helps though.

Just curious, what other settings used? What dithering, any image enhancements?
What happens if you set HDR to let madVR decide?
What happens with fast chroma upscaling algo like bicubic?
Also is there any reasons why you prefer FSE instead of FSW?
I belive 8350/270x is suitable for 23fps HDR. And for 1080@23 -> 2160 too.

Just to be clear... Everything works, I just want to figure out why. It makes no sense. High bitrate 4k HDR should he a slideshow with the settings I am using. I hate not being able to figure something out.
For some reason Windowed mode does not work as well as FSE so it's what I use.
Letting madVR decide for HDR won't work since Windows and I think madVR both don't recognize the GPU as being HDR capable... But I haven't really tried that since passthrough and tonemapping both work.
Ordered dithering, no enhancements.
My settings are not super crazy, but they should be swamping my system with a 4k UHD HDR bluray remux.
Any ideas on why this IS working?

If it's decided that Envy should use an Nvidia Gpu,
They might as well release Madvr as a PC KIT, some sort of HDMI pcie input card,you can stamp these out by the thousands.
Then have a PAID Madvr software version on desktop, compatible with ALL GPUS, Why make it a standalone device, it sounds like a good idea if you got a completely different hardware branch, But if it's gonna be Nvidia GPU, Madvr is already right here working all dandy like. ..
Keep it simple..
Turn the PC into a receiver.. that's fine.. and we won't require a second $2000 for a Specialized device, which does the same thing, but is less versatile.
The majority of people don't even have a living room anymore, they just sit in their rooms with a tv hooked up to PC>

I see 90% GPU load on your screenshots :)
Looks like 1080p and 720p upscaling more demanding for your GPU than native 4K resolution playback.
On my experience (fx8350 ex-user) this CPU can decode 4k remux very fine with LAV Video. But I'm not sure about your GPU. What exactly mean "bigger Present queues work with 4k but not work well with 1080p upscaled to 4k"? VRAM limitation?
For example, NGU doubling/quadrupling increases the vram usage. As i remember i used bicubic chroma and med or low NGU luma with my 2gb nvidia GPU for good performance.

Yeah. I go above and beyond VRAM, but it still plays smooth without dropped frames. I want to figure out how this is possible.
And no, upscaling is not more demanding with the same settings.
I don't have a problem. I have a puzzle. Why do I have no dropped frames even though the GPU is constantly running out of VRAM.

The render queue is very big (1 full second of playback), maybe this is masking the latency of using system RAM as a crutch and the rendering jitter that would result from that (that 120 ms max render time stat is frightening).
Present queue should in theory not be influenced by the rendering load, it's just there to compensate random delays that could occur at the critical time when frames need to be displayed. So you're saying if you lower it to 6 or 4, playback is less smooth?
The fact you said playback would initially turn into a slideshow with high bitrates scenes would point to decoding as the bottleneck, so in theory just upping the decoding queue should be the only thing needed. Did you try with a big decoding queue but a normal rendering/presenting?
I have given up trying to understand how the older Radeons like yours or mine work with madVR, I have seen all kinds of weird behaviour with it, sometimes bringing up the UI or pausing or seeking back completely screws up rendering times on my desktop until I pause or seek again. Sometimes it drops a frame even though the GPU is only at 60-65% reported load. I have tried all combination of Radeon control panel and madVR settings to no avail.

it's probably just downclocking and then dropping, then upclock
locking powerstate in afterburner works for that.

Except you can't. Because your nifty little capture card won't be HDCP compliant like the Envy. Which is the whole point to be able to plug any consumer device into it. Can you jump through some hoops to strip HDCP from your sources? Maybe. Keeping 4K HDR? Again, maybe. But thus is the problem. Envy is a *LICENSED* HDCP compliant product.

I tried many many different queue sizes and combinations. CPU queue too high was no good, GPU queue low and CPU high was no good. It was a lot of trial and error and finally settled on the 48/24/8 queue sizes (render queue of 16 was best, but that totally messed up 720p and 1080p playback... 8 is okay for all)
I just checked with AIDA64... my RAM latency is around the 60 ns mark... that's really low isn't it? Does that help when it needs to bail out the VRAM? (WOW I did not notice the 120 ms max stat! yikes!)
As for weird things with pauses/seeks on our cards, I do notice it more with render queue at 8... I never had issues with it at 4. But that is the tradeoff for me to get zero dropped frames for the 4k HDR stuff.

I don't see any hurdles here, if the group is already confident in building a Completely seperate device that is hdcp compliant,

We already have it. My 2070 sits just above the specs for the base Envy's GPU and obviously lower than the 2080ti. While it would be nice to be able to "madvr-ify" any source, I'm happy with my HTPC right now. What would be GREAT is if the pro version of madvr would include some of the tensor core algorithms he's currently developing. madshi said this is the reason he's been *HEAVILY* hinting that people looking at new cards should go RTX. This isn't to say the AMD cards won't benefit, but, if he really does make the tensor core stuff available to us HTPC users, very exciting times are coming.
Don't get me wrong, I've been contemplating a capture card myself for 4K HDR sources, but, 1) it won't be real time like the Envy, and 2) There's likely some limitations around audio capture which has nothing at all to do with madvr. Wouldn't be as nice as an Envy, but, still beneficial IMO.

it shouldn't just be the "pro" version of madVR that gets the tensor core treatment.
anyways...
the "best" "pro" version should not cost more than 25-30 bucks for a Lifetime license.
otherwise he wont make much money with madVR, because people wont buy it or pirate/crack it.

Many of us have been asking for a donation link to give him far more than that to show our appreciation. He's consistently said wait for the pro version. If you're not willing to pay for a pro version, then the free version will always be available according to madshi.

While madshi his given generously, it's important to remember that madVR (and Envy) would not be what it is without the hugely supportive community here, with many users exhaustively testing every new feature, enabling madshi to refine madVR to what it is today.
I would also be very interested in a pro version and quite happy to pay for it.

Yes, of course it's been a very large community effort to get madvr where it is today! Look at the dynamic tone mapping testing that's going on now. But for all the community effort that's gone into giving madshi feedback, ultimately until now it's only been him developing it. But the community....that's why he's insisting that there is always going to be a free version of madvr going forward. I can imagine the pro version to be more refined in what it offers and how it offers it. Closer (but not identical) to the Envy experience except on an HTPC. That's just my own guesswork. We shall see what his plans are. I'm ready to support it by buying a license for Pro.

Nope, we don't. I have enjoyed madvr for many years for free. Throwing some cash towards madshi by buying the pro version is reasonable to me, regardless of what it includes. For me it's about showing appreciation for a developer I respect. I have no doubt that the pro version will be worth it, no matter what he chooses to include. I've already been building a wish list of features and keep throwing hints at him about them. :D LOL But I have no expectation about what a pro version will or won't include.

Finally got my Red Dragon RX 5700 XT and I am loving it! I realize it's anecdotal and there are a million variables, but I'm getting some incredible render times (~20ms for NGU High chroma and tone mapping, for example). I am SO glad I returned my reference 5700 and waited for the aftermarket 5700 XT. I am a little nervous with the recent talk of utilizing Tensor Cores, but who even knows if/when that will actually be relevant? I'll likely be a happy camper for the next couple years...

I don't think you AMD guys and gals have anything really to worry about. The Envy is based on the RTX cards and tensor cores, which MAY or may not trickle down into madvr at some point. However, given the freaking insane processing power of these new AMD cards, I think you're going to be able to drive awesome quality out of madvr either way. I wouldn't sweat it. And who knows what capabilities those cards could unlock going forward. I think the future looks good no matter which direction you go. The reviews you guys are giving for these new AMD cards is very positive. Much more so than any of the previous generation of cards. That's awesome!

if madVR uses tensor cores AMD cards simply can't run that filter they are simply unable to do that he has to rewrite the hole shader so it can run much much slower on AMD cards.
and there is nothing to unlock there is no additional hardware.
these cards have 2560 streaming processors and there is nothing wrong with that they are made to render games.

So they didn't add any additional hardware for encoding/decoding? That's a shame. And no, of course they wouldn't be able to take advantage of any tensor core algorithms that may, or may not, get added to madvr. I didn't know if AMD had added something similar in their cards but it would seem the answer to that is a resounding NO. That's definitely a pity.

they have added new decoder and updated the encoder but nothing any madVR filter or render software will ever care about.
both are not competitive with nvidia or intel but the decoder are good enough(i hope still investigating) and you usually don't need more then what these new cards have to offer for now and it is currently not important if a card can decode 120 fps or only 60 fps both are enough.

Yea, and we don't even KNOW for sure that the tensor core algorithms will make it down to madvr. And even if they do, is it going to be "soon"? Possibly not. I think you could potentially get a year or two before it's even relevant. Unless madshi surprises us.

I finally had to break down and setup profiles. :D That was a long time coming but now that I've got my RTX 2070 and TV shows are starting to come back, I'll be using madvr to upscale my TiVo recordings. XFinity is not exactly known for their high quality. LOL So things like Walking Dead 720p 3mbps need a fair bit of assistance compared to upscaling a nice 1080p blu-ray (man you should see Revenge of the Sith upscaled on my C8! Very High NGU sharp for luma and high NGU AA for chroma WOA!). But, it also takes quite a bit more processing power to upscale at 60fps than it does at 23.976, especially when going from 720->2160. It's a "bit of a jump" as it were. :D I'm not able to get to Very High on luma upscaling NGU sharp. I can do High as long as I set chroma down to medium NGU AA. I suspect a 2080ti wouldn't have much issue. Such is life. I knew the 2070 would be a compromise when I bought it but I have no regrets. madvr handles the upscaling very well and cleans that picture up nicely. Bring on my shows. :)

Queues are higher than default. Have you tried the default queues?

0.7 ms present time sounds like a lot. On both my systems in FSW (present queue 4) it's 0.12

I concur... try lowering the queue sizes back to default and see if that helps.
