How often do you actually play VP9? I never. For H.264 the difference is between 5 and 15%. Nice, but not really important since any decent CPU can easily handle even 4K video. For 1080p content the difference here is like 1% CPU usage.

It does already have some ASM, some of which is for x64 only.
There also is x86 compatible ASM for the VP9 decoder. The fact that there is more ASM for x64 doesn't mean x86 doesn't get any love. The easy stuff is just done first. Plus some optimizations are only possible for x64 due to higher amount of available registers.

Either madshi will provide a 64-bit version at some point or he won't.
Personally, I don't think its a huge effort to produce both 32-bit and 64-bit for well written code, but of course thats up to madshi and his priorities.

Well, I suspect the primary reason why madshi hasn't made a x64 build yet is because he does not want to test on and support two architectures at this moment. So maybe once madVR hits 1.0, *poof* there will suddenly be a x64 build.

I get pretty much the same performance on 14.6 beta compared to 13.12 but with much stable redering queues.
Huge plus for 14.6 beta is I can minimize banding caused by my panel by setting the color depth to 8 bpc on the new Catalyst feature. With the new feature, I don't need to set my madVR bitdepth setting to 6 bit just to minimize banding. I can just leave it to 8 bit and have lesser noise.

Early reports say that the BSODs are gone with 14.6 as well, though it's hard to say for sure with such a small sample size.
R9 270x... 14.6 Beta does NOT perform as well as 13.12... Time to roll back once again

I'm encountering an issue with madVR playing videos as detailed below, and I'm interested in hearing peoples theories about it.
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 23.976fps [V: h.264 [jpn] (h264 high L4.0, yuv420p, 1280x720) [default]]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo [A: aac 2ch [jpn] (aac, 48000 Hz, stereo) [default]]
Subtitle: Advanced SubStation Alpha [S: subtitles & notes [eng] (ssa/ass) [default]]
Subtitle: UTF-8 [S: No subtitles]
When playing on my TV in extended mode, and the following set as display modes the TV may switch to:
1080p60, 1080p59, 1080p30, 1080p29, 1080p24, 1080p23
My TV switches to 23.97211hz to most closely match the 23.976 fps video, but it drops a ton of frames (odd to me considering rendering average is 11.26ms).

I use the 59/60hz screen method since that is the best viewing experience out of the three given what happens with each, but it seems like the ideal viewing would be with the first one where the system switches the tv display to match the video fps.
Any theories why the 23hz screen refresh rate is having the dropped frames? Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

My quick guess as to why smooth motion looks blurry would be that your TV doesn't do 23.972 correctly, is it taking 24Hz in but displaying at 60? Maybe a short log file (zipped) when it is dropping frames would help shed some light on it? Does smooth motion still look blurry if turned on for option 3? I assume this is on your Win 8.1 system? Just to rule out extra complications, does the same thing happen without subtitles?
Have you tried Reclock? It is useful even for only testing as maybe the refresh rate mismatch is causing more dropped frames than expected (I have experienced this before). I assume your screen shot wasn't after 1+ days of video playback. ;)

Don't know if this is applicable to you or not, but forcing Smooth Motion will always make the picture noticeably softer and produce images like what you've shown (blended frames)
even after disabling all performance for quality options, I only keep it enabled with it's default setting 'only if there would be motion judder without it'.

this looks like one piece. one piece should be 29p so when the file reports 23p and is played at 23p madvr drops frames.
with smoothmotion frames aren't dropped but displaying 30 fps in 23 with smoothmotions looks not that good...
easy to check with a sample.
you get presentation glitches if you run out of Vram and you put all queue to maximum ... you don't need them this high try lower values. you can disable the new path windows mode and there should be no way for presentations glitches anymore. BTW you should use aero if you use windowed mode.

I would think its displaying hz correctly since it reads at the right speeds in the CTRL+J that is displayed in left side of the screen shots. I've tried things like deleting the 23hz (making it display at 24hz) as well as deleting the 24hz to make sure it uses the 23hz, but in both cases it still had the dropped frames. If it was displaying it in 60 then I'd think the CTRL+J would show 60hz at the top in those screen shots.
Maybe a short log file (zipped) when it is dropping frames would help shed some light on it?
Refresh my memory on how to activate log file recording in mpc-hc/madvr, and I'll provide it.

I've tried with and without Reclock, but it didn't make a difference in that frames were still dropped. (I had thought that it combined with the supported refresh rates it would have worked well, but its never seemed to provide any noticeable benefit the times I've used it).
Finally in answer to your last question. If you're referring to playing video non-stop for 24 hours then no I was not, but if your asking if I was marathoning episodes (as in watching a bunch in a row playing them back to back) then yes I was. :rolleyes::o

Forcing Smooth Motion on was the only way I could make it active for that type of file on that screen. If I set it to only if there would be judder without it then it isn't enabled, and it continues to drop frames at the 23hz setting. So far Smooth Motion is the only way I've found to stop the dropping of frames at that screen hz with those types of files.

Based on your suggestion I dropped my CPU and GPU queues down to 4 for both, and it still had presentation glitches. (Dang I was hoping it would eliminate the presentation glitches after I read your post).
My system has 16GB of RAM, the GPU 4GB GDDR5 (as reported by GPU-Z), so I don't think its maxing out my VRAM. GPU-Z reports Dynamic Memory Usage 751 MB (at most) when watching a video if both queues are set at their maximum.

it's a problem of all 3: Splitter, file and MadVR.
it is possible to add min FPS, max FPS and avg FPS in file infos.
the splitter just uses 1 FPS value. MadVR has use these informations too to switch to the best possible refreshrate. MadVR with SM at 60 hz does an awesome job on these files!

VFR is a problem no matter what the splitter reports.
Splitters will typically report the FPS of the first segment in the file, but it doesn't really matter, as no matter which you report, its going to be wrong at some point. DirectShow doesn't let you report anything else to the decoder and renderer.
Smooth Motion is probably the best way to deal with those files.

Your right about it using variable fps during playback when looking at it with EVRCP CTRL+J.

Based on that as a test I went in and edited my list of all display modes madVR may switch to: in madVR settings for the tv so that it only included the 29hz and 30hz options. It then opened it in the 30hz, and played without any dropped frames or presentation glitches.
As far as madVR working with VFR videos (don't know if its plausible): If madVR could detect the high point of video fps (in this case 29.97) then check against the list of all display modes madVR may switch to: section and switch to that mode (or the closest one with a higher hz - it would be better to repeat frames than drop them right?-) that might be a good way to deal with VFR videos.
From a testing perspective if we had a rule code for the high fps algorithm we could make profiles with each of the supported modes for the screen, and tell it in certain cases to use the different profiles. Something like:

else if (Hfps <=29) "29hz screen profile"

Does that sound like something that is plausible?
Edit: Looks like profiles can't be created for the "devices" group in madVR settings (as things are now). I was thinking about creating profiles and rules using the srcFps code for now and setting them to use one display mode higher then what the source FPS is detected at , but that doesn't look doable without profiles for the "devices" area.

so MadVR is already playing and now noticing oh this part is 26 fps the next is 29 fps. there is no way to change the display mode now it take way to long to do this. so the best way to do this is to force SM and highes refreshrate this way all parts are smooth. with smoothmotion the highes frame rate is simply the best at 60 or 120 fps the blending is not visible anymore. 30 hz SM with 23 fps content looks pretty bad because the blending is visible.

It really depends on the variableness of the framerate. SM is the safe option but in my case it was maybe 5% of the video that was >23 fps. I chose to deal with the judder in those parts over the motion blur. IIRC mediainfo only listed original fps 23.976 so I don't know if anything could really be done with the file, splitter or madvr to work around it. You'd think with madvr's lookahead it could enable SM for that 5% in my case but I don't think it did.

120 Hz with smooth motion for 25/50 fps looks great, I really do not see any extra motion blur.

If your TV accepts 24 fps but displays it at 60 fps madVR would still think it was displaying at 24 fps so ctrl-J would report 24 fps. However huhn got it so I think further answers your questions are beside the point now, I am not ignoring you. :)

madVR has the option to change the screen resolution and refresh rates during playback start, when media player goes fullscreen, when the player is closed, or when the player leaves fullscreen depending on what settings are chosen under display modes. Those transitions are pretty fast, and I'd think a change based on the high refresh rate could be similar if not just as quick in the same cases.
Setting a high refresh rate (60 or 59) with Smooth Motion enabled still produces noticeable blur as shown in : Option 3 with Smooth Motion (http://i62.tinypic.com/73e23b.jpg) I showed earlier, and I agree with you about 30hz Smooth Motion playing 23 fps content. Like turobjet said I'd be more apt to small amount of judder as opposed to an excessive amount of blur. As a result my currently preferred method of viewing the VFR 23.97 videos is the 30hz without SM combination.

Its interesting you would say there would be more judder with the 23.97/24 at 30hz because I haven't noticed any yet. The 60hz setting is producing presentation glitches (which I do notice, and don't occur at 30hz) otherwise I would use 60.
As I mentioned previously the TV supports 23,24,29,30,59, and 60. The refresh rates of 48, 72, 96, and 120 are not listed as valid modes so unfortunately I can't go with any of those.

I've never seen madVR report anything other than what the tv is set to for the display, so I don't know where you get that from. Regardless of what fps the video is CTRL+J in madVR lists what ever hz I have set. If the TV is set to 60hz then madVR also shows 60hz in the CTRL+J overlay. If the TV is set to 24hz then madVR lists 24hz in the CTRL+J overlay.

If madVR reports drop/repeat >3 hours, that should be considered good enough to not need Smooth Motion or Reclock.
(VideoFPS x RefreshMutliple)(ClockDeviation% + 1) = OptimalRefreshRate
(23.976023976 x 5)(0.00163% + 1) = OptimalRefreshRate
(119.88011988)(1.0000163) = 119.882073925954
With very high refresh rates you are more likely to see a delayed frame (vsync interval) than a dropped frame (movie frame interval), but if you don't get decently close to optimal, you may notice anomalies during slow panning scenes. Though you really just need to trust your eyes, since madVR OSD stats cannot be trusted to report all problems. It is possible to still experience dropped frames, repeats, vsync glitchs, etc which are impossible for madVR to detect.

also unrelated just didn't want to make another post, i wonder if it would ever be possible to use the gpu's AA filter with madvr, combine that with madvr's AR filter and all the scalers such as lanczos and spline would look much better.

That probably won't work, most algorithms can be easily redesigned to achieve the same thing in one pass. The fact that nobody has done so suggest that it either doesn't work or doesn't change the result.

BTW, how does mVR work on Haswell IGP's? Can it do J3AR luma+chroma SD/720p@1080p + ED?
there are a lot of Intel igpu there is no general answer maybe the ires pro can do.

Right, well my CPU only says "Intel® HD Graphics"(it does support "Quick Sync Video"): Pentium Processor G3420 (http://ark.intel.com/products/77775)
HD Graphics – GT1, 10 execution units, up to 184 GFLOPS at 1150 MHz
But I guess it uses shared system memory or so, this might be too slow for mVR....was wondering if anyone tried before I'd go through the trouble of trying it myself.

can you add a screenshoot with the OSD (j-control) and even better a small sample of that file in question.
i use the same display mode like you and i didn't get this problem so i think the file is the problem. btw it should switch to 59 in this case with a 29p source and these display modes because it is perfect x2 refreshrate and every frame gets simply displayed 2 times.

windows 8 or windows 7? this type of thing seems to only happen on win 8.

As with the beta drivers before them they cause the error "MPC-HC
encountered a problem during initialization. DVD playback may not work correctly. This might be caused by some incompatibility with certain security tools."
That error appears tied to MPC-HC itself as opposed to madVR, as you can use madVR with MPC-BE (as done with the KCP Black beta version (http://haruhichan.com/forum/showthread.php?7545-KCP-Kawaii-Codec-Pack)) without the error occurring at start.

Does anyone else experience that madVR will get all discombobulated and start stuttering or a playing a reduced framerate sometimes when playing back 720p60 content with a 6:4 film IVTC. It happens with ATSC broadcast HDTV mkv files at the point where commercials are removed. Cycling out of Film mode and back in with CTRL+Shift+Alt+T fixes the issue. The files play back fine (smoothly) through the commercial cuts without the IVTC. The OSD doesn't seem to indicate any issues when it starts stuttering. :confused:

I do Stereodude, it's not always at ad breaks for me, it's often in the middle of a scene. It's usually at least 15 minutes into the video and it looks like slow-motion. Seeking fixes it and going back over the scene works fine. I'll add it to the bugtracker.
What gpu and os are you using and is this windowed, overlay or FSE?

Anyone tried 14.6 drivers to see if they improved NNEDI3 performance?

There does not seem any negative performance side-effects with madVR 0.86.10 on HD7970.
With 14.6 beta driver, I feel its (-20%) power throttle control works better on HD7970 althrough the (530MHz) frequency control does not work at all. It keeps staying at 925 MHz when running with madVR. However the GPU temperature and fan speed is somewhat lower and less noisy with the same playback tests when it is compared with 13.12 driver's -20% power at 530MHz.
The new driver allows 12-bit deep-color depth signal to my TV (Sony 65HX920) now. But I wonder how madVR can take any advantage of this in the future... D3D FSE 12-bit color depth mode does not seem native D3D spec supported in Windows 7, either?

Does anyone else experience that madVR will get all discombobulated and start stuttering or a playing a reduced framerate sometimes when playing back 720p60 content with a 6:4 film IVTC. I have this issue and it usually happens when the OSD switches to "unknown cadence" and doesn't stop stuttering until it locks onto 6:4 again (usually seconds or sometimes minutes later). It's not during commercials either but rather anytime randomly in the middle of a scene like turbojet.

Not much performance difference on nnedi3 with my 7770 using 14.6 compared to 13.12.
But others seems to have performance issue with 14.6. Like QBhd for example.

As with the beta drivers before them they cause the error "MPC-HC
encountered a problem during initialization. DVD playback may not work correctly. This might be caused by some incompatibility with certain security tools."
That error appears tied to MPC-HC itself as opposed to madVR, as you can use madVR with MPC-BE (as done with the KCP Black beta version (http://haruhichan.com/forum/showthread.php?7545-KCP-Kawaii-Codec-Pack)) without the error occurring at start.
Works fine here, so it must be something wrong on your end.

If you are not pushing your GPU to the limit, I am sure you wouldn't see the performance hit. But I have all my profiles maxed out (i.e. not one more neuron step can be added without dropped frames in any of the three NEDDI3 possibilities) and playback is silky smooth with 13.12... as soon as 14.6 is installed all profiles get dropped frames.
It's hard to quantify the performance hit, but any hit that requires neurons to be taken away to run without dropped frames is a bad one in my books :)

can you add a screenshoot with the OSD (j-control) and even better a small sample of that file in question.
i use the same display mode like you and i didn't get this problem so i think the file is the problem. btw it should switch to 59 in this case with a 29p source and these display modes because it is perfect x2 refreshrate and every frame gets simply displayed 2 times.
You're right sir, it was the file's problem, it works with other NTSC content. It switchs to 59hz which is double the frame rate.
I'm in Windows 7 64, btw. Knowing there's an issue with the new 337.88 driver I think it would be better to not upgrade.
On a different matter, I am not sure if this could traslate to better video performance, but have you guys heard about the "core parking" feature? I had some stuttering issues while playing Battlefield 4 recently and read about this; so I unlocked all cores permanently, and the fps counter rose up to the sky. AFAIK it's known as C6 state (am I right?) and is available on the newest processors and OS, may I guess i7 and Windows Vista/7.

Is having a near 90% GPU load by using nnedi3(32 neurons luma doubling & 16 neurons chroma upscaling) on a 24p SD content not pushing the limit? BTW I get this GPU load both on 13.12 driver & 14.6 beta driver without dropping frames. 14.4 driver is another story though.
EDIT: On a 24p SD content to 1080, I can also do 64 neurons luma doubling by dropping neddi3 chroma upscaling without seeing any frame drops. On this particular settings, I get 92% GPU load both on 13.12 driver & 14.6 beta driver.
But I have all my profiles maxed out.
Mine too. Though I remove my 720p to 1080p nnedi3 doubling profile as I don't see any PQ improvements compared to nnedi3 doubling an SD content to my 1080p display.

I forgot to link you to the utility to unpark processor cores. Just click on "Disabled" for both AC and Battery, so 100% of the cores have to be active all the time.
I have noticed it treats HT cores as parkable cores too.

FWIW I've mentioned the glitches I had with NNEDI on the 270 and the increased lag with 14.4 to a local hardware review website who's in direct contact with AMD and the owner told me that he would demand answers. They remained on the top of things regarding the 7870 black screen drama so there might be hope that somebody at AMD would stop this copyback nonsense.

Splitters will typically report the FPS of the first segment in the file, but it doesn't really matter, as no matter which you report, its going to be wrong at some point. DirectShow doesn't let you report anything else to the decoder and renderer.
That problem might be solvable in the future with VESA Adaptive Sync/NVIDIA G-Sync/AMD Freesync. It could also make smooth motion obsolete.

Works fine here, so it must be something wrong on your end.
There are many people reporting the error message. Are you using Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or other (and 64-bit or 32-bit)? It may occur on Windows 8.1 (and 8) systems, (or 64-bit) but not 7 (or 32-bit systems).

Next time it does this I will check the OSD closer. I don't recall it saying unknown cadence, but maybe it does.
