I just watched a movie a few minutes with OSD on and found several times where for about 30 sec the max rendering time was about half the average rendering time.
I guess I figured it out. It's specific to one movie. It seems to have a much bigger spread of rendering times than other movies. Generally the rendering times are quite low but for some scenes they're quite high. After such a demanding scene if the maximum rendering time drops a lot (which I guess correctly reflects the timings) then the average rendering time needs quite some time to catch up. That's when the latter is much higher than the former.

a newbie question about upscaling:
what would be better (with more quality) to watch:
1) 720p upscaled w madVR to 1080p desktop resolution
2) 720p at 720p desktop at 1080p monitor ?
So, if i have a 1080p PC monitor that can change resolutions to 720p or 480p, using MadVR internal resolution switch, you guys are saying i should leave the monitor at 1080p always? Or use the resolution switch?

MadVR will almost certainly scale better than your monitor, so leave it on 1080p.

It's always best to use the native resolution of your monitor. Let madVR do the scaling work instead of the monitor's internal scaling. For myself that meant using the rectangular pixel resolution of 1024x768 (I have a 2007 LG 720p Plasma)... Just make sure 1080p is your "native" resolution.

Are you using hardware accelerated decoding? Software decoding seems to be less error prone.

Also a question for display experts out there. I'm in a dilemma between IPS and TN. On one side I can get better colors but no 120hz (which is kinda sad for my casual gaming and video smoothness) but on the other side I can get the best smooth experience ever (but with not so good colors thanks to the bad viewing angles).
Does one side has any other benefits which I'm not aware of that might help me make my decision on which one to go for? I'm aware that we have IPS displays that can be overclocked to 120hz, but those need to be imported AFAIK and I forgot the name of the other company that makes those around here...

It's specific to file name tag. No artifacts with force film and no tag but also isn't ivtc'd correctly. I tested it on 3 PC's, same artifacts with potplayer on all, no artifacts with mpc-be on all.
And this occurs with all movies? Please double check the OSD to see whether deinterlacing is actually enabled and film mode active when forcing film mode. Maybe the movie is detected to be progressive? In that case forcing film mode won't do a thing, but using the file name tag might force deinterlacing on. Not sure, though, just a guess. At least that's the only way I can imagine why the problem would only apply to the file name tag...
One question: I've a 2600k and a 7870. Now, I have my out usually set to the onboard gfx to save power and it fires up the 7870 when needed via virtu software. My question is, how can I set madvr to use the 7870 for acceleration when the output is set to my onboard?
Anyone knows how can I set madvr to use the radeon 7870 for acceleration when the output is set to my onboard gfx card?

Personally, I've no idea how that virtu stuff works. madVR behaves like a game. So whatever you do to make games run on your 7870 should in theory also work for madVR. If it doesn't then I don't know why, or how to make it work, unfortunately...
I notice something strange, but very subtle and hard to spot while playing HD content.
Everything seems to play buttersmooth, but during specific tiny movements (typically a slow moving object in the distance or background) I notice some stutter, exclusively focussed on that object. it's like the object jumps from one place to the next (but very subtle) and there are some frames missing in between.
But even during these moments, all other motion and all other objects of the image are perfectly portrayed. The statistics also show no frame drops whatsoever.
My best guess: some motion detection algorithm is playing the wrong tricks?
Is this with DXVA deinterlacing? That's the only part which might treat some parts of the image differently than others. All other algorithms used by madVR don't do such a thing atm...
Whenever the present queue is set lower than the render queue so the former cannot hold all rendered frames (or rendered + blended ones with FRC used) the rendering time increases.
Does this mean the renderer has to wait for the present queue to free up and this waiting time is added to the rendering time?
I thought having the queues filled completely was good but it's faster if the present queue is not by setting the present queue higher than the render queue.
Is this in windowed mode or overlay mode or fse mode?
Generally, playback should be more reliable the bigger the queues are. The smallest queue can be the bottleneck. It's better to have a 2000 frame queue which is half full than to have a 4 frame queue which is full. So it doesn't really matter if they're "full" or not. What matters is how many frames are stored in there. So setting the queues higher should usually help stability, as long as you're not running out of RAM and if the GPU driver doesn't have a problem with the queue size. Of course big queues mean slower OSD reaction. A larger presentation queue also means slower windowed <-> fse switches. So it comes at a price.
I'm not sure, maybe Direct3D gets stuck/slower when the presentation queue is full. It shouldn't, but I've not written D3D, so I can't vouch for what it does.
At first I thought it could be either a bad configuration setup or a corrupted file, but the guy who reported the issues told me that when he switches his refresh rate to 59 hz (instead of 60 hz) the issue fixes itself, but appears in other videos.
Looks like a problem with DXVA decoding to me. Or the GPU hardware is broken.
-24p@24Hz: interframe jitter is excellent but the 24p judder is really hiccupy, especially on slow pans. Also, flickering is fairly annoying on flat bright objects(a long shot from 100Hz CRT, though ^^)
-24p@24Hz + BFI: hardly anymore backlight flickering and the synced BFI hides motion blur amazingly well. The flip side of the coin is that it acts as a motion-based EE and the picture looks really "colored" for lack of a better word. The subjective pop effect is highly increased but it doesn't look natural, it really has a "digital" flat-screen look.....my brain is not tricked into believing that it's watching through a window(the original intent of HD video). I can literally "feel" the syncopated shutter of the BFI and that really gives a "digital" unnatural look. 24p judder is still there and it's painful.
-24p@60Hz + mVR FRC: Ah, goodness! This time the motion blur doesn't hide/cheat anymore, it strives to make things look a hell lot smoother. Pop effect is astounding, 24p judder is history and it literally makes me feel like I'm watching through a window, too good to be true :cool:
OTOH, once BFI is disabled the darn backlight flicker becomes very annoying :o
Two comments:
(1) Why is there more flickering with BFI turned *OFF* compared to turned *ON*? Normally BFI introduces flickering, it doesn't remove/reduce it!!!
(2) When you're talking about "24p judder", do you mean the judder that the lower framerate of 24fps naturally comes with? If so, 24p@60Hz + mVR FRC should show it exactly the same way. If 24p@60Hz + mVR FRC is smoother for you than the native 24Hz modes of your display, then I would bet on that your display doesn't handle 24Hz "correctly", instead it probably does a 3:2 pulldown internally. If that is the case, what you're seeing is not "24p judder", but instead 3:2 pulldown judder introduced by your display handling 24p input in a bad way. If you had a display which handles 24Hz input correctly, it should be just as smooth as 24p@60Hz + mVR FRC is.
It's my observation that FRC does not give a visually indistinguishable result is when the video's framerate is within ~25% of the display's refresh rate. Maybe madshi could provide better insight on this.
I've said it right from the start: The higher the refresh rate, and the lower the framerate, the better smooth motion FRC works. I might be able to improve the smoothness when framerate and refresh rate are near to each other, but if I do so, it will cost quite a bit more sharpness in moving parts of the image.

If you're looking for a computer display, I'd prefer an IPS panel, except if you're a heavy gamer, maybe. If you're looking for a movie display, I'd much rather recommend a Panasonic plasma, or one of the new OLED displays from LG or Samsung if can afford that. But that is a hot topic, and a matter of taste (some people don't like plasmas, while I personally like them much better than LCDs for movie watching). So please let's no go into this in any more depth.

Need HELP gathering samples for future madVR algorithms.
Basically I'm looking for samples which have all kinds of black bars encoded into the video area, either top/bottom, or left/right, or even all around. The weirder the black bars are, the better. E.g. if the top bar is smaller than the bottom bar (as is the case with some Japan broadcasts because they place subtitles under the Cinemascope video area), that would make a great sample.
If there are logos or burnt-in subtitles in the bars, that would be nice, too. They can be partially or completely in the black bars. Also interesting would be samples which have black bars with raised black levels. The higher raised, the better. Basically any sample which is weird in any way: Send it to me!
Just very small samples (like 3 seconds of runtime or so) will do, although if you want to upload larger samples, that'd be fine with me, too. If it's a sample with subtitles in the black bars, then maybe it would make sense to make the sample a bit longer, so that the sample contains both (1) frames with subtitles visible and also (2) frames with no subtitles visible.
Please don't expect those "future madVR algorithms" soon, and I'll also not comment on what exactly those algorithms will do. Maybe you can guess, based on what kind of samples I'm asking for. In any case, I'll not comment on the algorithms until they're done and available. Thanks!

Yes yes I'm sorry! I forgot to ask him this question because he said he didn't use any settings other than default so I assumed this wasn't an issue.

My bad, I should had added "visible" because when BFI is on, the flickering is so fast that my brain can barely pick up. For instance if I enable the TV menu that has a light blue background, I can definitely see the obvious flicker when BFI is disabled, but when it's enabled the picture is far more "stable"...to the point that I really have to stare & focus to see the BFI flicker.
The only problem with BFI to my eyes is high contrast, like white lettering on black background or the opposite(TV channel logos or windows desktop icons for instance). In those cases, it does indeed flicker like RBE's but without the funky colors. OTOH it's a real treat for computer use if there's no high contrast taking place.
Anyway, BFI is great on 1080i50 HD DVB-T and it's a TV set in the first place so that definitely improves the TV viewing.
I'm going to try that supposedly non-flickering BenQ GW2760HS and if that fails(I'm doubtful but youtube videos speak a millions words), I'll go back to that TV set with BFI enabled for windows use & TV and no-BFI for mVR's FRC.

I know what dropped/dupped frames and 3:2 pull down look like.......I've tried a whole bunch of non-broken 1:1 displays and to my eyes -even on a 96.000Hz CRT- mVR's FRC does improve the 24p smoothness. Basically the blurring makes the 24p cadence smoother. Yes it's still 24p but its cadence is less visible and that drastically improves the subjective pop effect to my eyes.
When I first tried this feature, I really hated the blurring but after my brain got the hang of it(and I believe learned to ignore it) it just looks less syncopated and "smoother". You blend the frames and it makes them look less "mechanical", the "dinosaur walk" cadence becomes far less obvious. I believe that's the best analogy I can find to explain what I see :)

Oh well, I'm currently typing this on one of those TV sets but this one has a crappy panel and it's less responsive and less contrasty than the one I had before.....the blurring is pretty annoying to tell you the truth, but blurring is not much of an issue on a properly driven A-MVA panel.
Anyway, I want frames blending and it will blur the PQ by design I think.....OTOH, if you have other magic tricks to try, I'll be happy to.

That's FSE mode.
Stability isn't a problem, no drops or glitches even with GPU queue set to the lowest value possible, i.e. four. However with e.g. 24p@60Hz using FRC I have to set the presentation queue not lower than ten, otherwise the rendering time will increase. (Changing queues sometimes needs a restart of MPC-HC to give reliable results.)

You are correct forcing film doesn't have an effect, deinterlacing is off. But something is broken with randomly incorrect ivtc, replay the once problematic clip and now it works fine, frame stepping shows no repeats, tested this with mpc and potplayer with osd showing no drops/delays. I've always used deint=ivtc to work around this issue but it's not a working option in potplayer due to the artifacts.
deint=on doesn't have the artifacts but as expected has the frame repeats. It doesn't seem to be a deinterlacing issue.
Another thing with deint=ivtc and potplayer is it never find's a cadence of any file.

My monitor is just exactly the Dell U2412M(6-bit e-IPS + A-FRC panel), which was tested in the PWM-issue article. Fortunately my eyes cannot sense any flicking issue at 15% brightness -- in the room with 2 LED bulbs -- 9w 700lm 5000~5700K + 9w 580lm 2700K. :)
About the KDL-65HX920 in the living room, my eyes do not sense any static image flicking issue, either --- even with MotionFlow Clear+ setting. The horizontal strobing black-bar (from top-to-down direction on 8 vertical local-dimming zones) runs at 960Hz speed --- 4 times speed of its 240Hz Innolux S-MVA panel.
The MotionFlow Impulse setting in HX750/HX850/HX950 could show it since the backlit is totally turned off at 75% of display time.

If you have a LED backlight driven with PWM, it is possible to see flickering. Personally I'm happy to still have CCFL backlights, as the flickering is basically non-existant there. :)
Of course there are screens that use LED backlights without PWM, or at least with a high enough PWM frequency, but sadly manufacturers don't usually put such information in the spec sheet properly.

CCFL can also use PWM, and the icing on the cake is that very often their PSU emits a buzzing noise when it's not running at full capacity.

The first 46" Hitachi TV set I tried was using CCFL, its PSU was buzzing and I was seeing agressive light green RBE's on high contrast movements. But no headaches this time, prolly because the response time of CCFL is slower than LED's.
Eizo have been selling non-PWM monitors for a while and they even have an old VA model currently selling for relatively cheap but its overdrive is extremely poor apparently.

This reminds me about my previous Samsung 203B monitor. The brightness of this unit needs to go above 82 ~ 85% to get rid of this issue from PSU. :p
Its panel is a 6-bit B-TN + FRC 20" 4:3.

2013 "Oz the Great and Powerful" starts in 4:3 pillar-boxed and then expands to 16:9, this could be considered as "odd" black bars, couldn't it? :)

Has anyone experienced the video freezing yet the audio continuing? I skipped to the last closing chapter and after it finished and started playing the next file but the picture was frozen and MPC-BE was unresponsive. I couldn't minimize or bring up any menus, it wasn't until I hit CTRL-Alt-Delete and got task manager up that MPC-BE then displayed everything properly. I have no idea at this point where the issue may lie, although perhaps it could be related to another issue I've experienced where the odd subtitle is not being refreshed on screen as well..

All the monogatari series (bake/nise/neko/2nd season) have frequent layout changes as well, similar to dark knight. TV rips might be a good option since there will be a logo (partially) on the black bars as well

That's a good idea. I've got a ton of US Cable TV recordings in Windows Media Center. I know IFC-HD is copy-free, and they plaster their logo in the bottom right. Not sure about black bars, but I'll have a look. TCM-HD is also a good candidate.

Randomly, I don't get any picture at all when I open a new movie....sometimes I can seek a few times and I'll finally get a picture after 10/15 secs, sometimes some movies stutter badly....strangely many movies work just fine and sometimes even those that used to not give any picture before play perfectly fine right from the start ???
I've reset everything(mVR/Reclock/LAV/PotP) to no available and all movies play fine with EVR. They behave in the same erratic way with mVR+MPCHC.
Using the old or new rendering path doesn't change anything.
I realize that XP is a caveman OS but you can read everywhere that it's still fueling ±50% of the computers in the world and personally it does all I want as I don't care for SSD's, videogames, fancy GUI's and all that stuff..

I realize that XP is a caveman OS but you can read everywhere that it's still fueling ±50% of the computers in the world and personally it does all I want as I don't care for SSD's, videogames, fancy GUI's and all that stuff..It's 12 years old at this point, and most people that are still running XP, are using it because they still have old hardware. Trying to use it with modern hardware is just asking for problems.
I guess this is the alarm bell that I should install W8.1..Install Windows 8 now and wait for the final version of 8.1 to be released.

yay, I found a trick to get the darn thing working: when a movie starts without any picture, I open the "preferences" config panel of PotP, I close it et voilà picture is back! J3AR full upscale + FRC really do look amazing :)

It's 12 years old at this point, and most people that are still running XP, are using it because they still have old hardware. Trying to use it with modern hardware is just asking for problems. My firewall passes all the leak tests.
Install Windows 8 now and wait for the final version of 8.1 to be released.
Well I use orthodynamic headphones that were made in the early 70's, it's only very recently that I finally dropped CRT's.....I'm from team "proven to work" but I do realize that you are entirely right. Also, with the recent PRISM stuff, I'm scared of all the spying stuff I will have to learn about and try to disable in W8. Gonna have to go back to the blackboard and reinvent the (security) wheel basically as my fav firewall is XP-only of course.....when OTOH my XP box does everything I need and my firewall passes all the leak tests(all non-vital background services are disabled as well).

Wait… you're sticking with XP for security reasons? Seriously? You realize XP is significantly less secure than Vista/7 (e.g. no UAC) - and most importantly, Microsoft is dropping support for XP (i.e. no security updates) in the near future?

Oh wait, mVR is completely unable to detect the refresh rate when I check its OSD(someone else mentioned the same problem a while ago on XP as well)....it keeps oscillating betweeen 0Hz, then 50, 53, 56 and so on....it reads as dead-on 60.000Hz in Reclock(and in mVR as well using my old 8800GS). Will look into taking the W7SP1 plunge anytime soon as I presume that madshi has better things to do with his time.

concerning luma expansion and proper brightness/contrast calibration..
when using madvr with proper settings
1)lav video decoder yuv->rgb :untouched (as input)
2) madvr pc levels (0-255)
3)CCC everything disabled except pulldown
4)software mode (no dxva)
5)pixel format :rgb full in CCC
6)ati 7770 hdmi->hdmi benq w1070pj
is it normal that i don't get the BTB(0-16) and WTW(235-255) information using calibration discs because of the luma expansion done by madvr (16-235 -> 0-255)?
PS toggling between RGB full and limited doesn't seem to affect my brightness/contrast levels(either in desktop or within mpc)...i don't think this is normal,ehh?

this is not used madvr accepts nearly all colorspaces available.

where did you toggle this? in madvr (devices -> monitor -> properties) madvr control + shift + alternative + i or in lav filter.
the lavfilter options is not used be course it is not converting to rgb.

Even linux's SElinux feature was at least partially written by the NSA, so you can't really hide anyway. Though instead of win8 I'd personally go with win7

Yep, I'm not ready for the W8 metro bs just yet.......I'll be taking baby steps, and I might as well install W7SP1 on a SSD saving me from the HDD partitioning nightmare.
Well, at least AMD made it clear and gave up on XP altogether.....nvidia did not and I keep reading that DX9 games run faster on XP than on W7/8.....but anyway, there's little point for madshi to waste his time on XP and tbh I've been craving HPET since forever, time to put it all in action as there's no point in living in the past....and soon or later I'll be forced to move on anyway. Direct2D also seems pretty yummy :)
Concerning security, the way I see it: no open port = no problem. You also have to disable every non-vital background process and it'll take me a good while to learn the tricks of the trade all over again....and also to find a proper rules based trustable firewall, but using a 2012 DX11 GPU on a 2001 DX9 OS just doesn't make sense :cool:
And to avoid complete OT, I'll say that a 2GB GTX660 is really a dream come true with mVR...even with all buffers set to the max + FRC enabled(with a Q9450) I barely reach 1.2GB of VRAM and 30% of GPU load. It'll take 60fps 1440*1080 to seriously load the board and I do plan on keeping it for a while as this Asus is really just as silent as the reviews claim. Basically I'm looking for samples which have all kinds of black bars encoded into the video area, either top/bottom, or left/right, or even all around. The weirder the black bars are, the better. E.g. if the top bar is smaller than the bottom bar (as is the case with some Japan broadcasts because they place subtitles under the Cinemascope video area), that would make a great sample.
In Life of Pi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454876/) there is a scene where fishes come flying through the black bars.

a Q9450 in an equally old system but mVR does pretty much everything on the GPU and the LAV decoder uses CUVID for H264/VC1 & MPEG2 decoding so no need for a high-end CPU. I barely see 10-15% CPU loads while watching movies.
The more you wait, the cheaper the 660 will get as the 760 is making is obsolete and resellers can't afford to lose money on their outstanding stock....all this said, Asus boards are always the most silent in every review. They're not the coolest though as the heatsink is DirectCU but its fins are aluminium and the fans don't rotate very fast so this might be a problem in a small HTPC where you would prefer a ref board with a turbine fan that instantly exhausts the hot air out of the box. OTOH that'll be noisier.
Well I think my Vsync issues on XP are a problem related to the Nvidia drivers. Even with latest WHQL drivers, the refresh rate reported by madVR is all over the place, sometimes falling to 57Hz on a 60Hz screen and sometimes jumping into 62 range, and frame drops occur everywhere. I just tested madVR on another machine with Intel HD4000 Ivy Bridge graphics, exact same software setup as my PC and it works flawless, no Vsync issues and I just watched a film with 0 frame drops on it. I guess Nvidia messed something up on XP and 600 series drivers. Interesting fact is that all games, for example have perfect Vsync applied.
Yep, thanks again for the warning......I should have taken it more seriously. The only game I play is Q3 and it works just fine on the 660.

Has anyone experienced the video freezing yet the audio continuing? I skipped to the last closing chapter and after it finished and started playing the next file but the picture was frozen and MPC-BE was unresponsive. I couldn't minimize or bring up any menus, it wasn't until I hit CTRL-Alt-Delete and got task manager up that MPC-BE then displayed everything properly. I have no idea at this point where the issue may lie, although perhaps it could be related to another issue I've experienced where the odd subtitle is not being refreshed on screen as well..
I experienced this fairly often when I used MVR's refresh rate changer. Never could produce it at will so I didn't submit any kind of bug report. Now I use only 60hz + smooth motion and it hasn't happened to me since.

Personally, I've no idea how that virtu stuff works. madVR behaves like a game. So whatever you do to make games run on your 7870 should in theory also work for madVR. If it doesn't then I don't know why, or how to make it work, unfortunately...

As for virtu.... well, regrdless of it, let's forget I mentioned it. Is it possible that madvr uses the gfx card that's not outputing to monitor for hardware acceleration? Or is it possible to add that feature at some point? SVP does. I mean, I use the builtin intel HD 3000 for output, but it can use another gfx card in the system for opencl acceleration (the radeon 7870 in my case). Can madvr do something similar?

Sure, that's a very valid question! Having HD 3000 as a primary card of sorts means the 7870 is in idle mode for about 80% of the time I spend before my computer, surfing the net, managing files and writing emails. That results in much lower power consumption and heat dissipation inside my tower. Also, quicksync is readily available to lav decoder without resorting to tricks when HD 3000 is active for video playback.

madVR is great. i asked before if i need change anything on madVr options since i have a panasonic G20 and only do 4:2:2 not 4:4:4
1) on madVR options should i change RGB levels for TV (16-235) or to PC (o-255)?
2) on LAV video configuration should i change RGB levels for TV or PC?
3) i have a receiver denon 2309 and i set it for TV levels.
i sold my last laptop with hd5650 and buy new one with gt630m gpu. need change anything on nvidia options?
