Luma doubling quality is more important than chroma upscaling quality. Lower chroma down to medium before lowering the luma doubling quality.

Thanks, so I'm using Chroma to medium and Luma Very High.

Still need to test, it reach to 34-38 ms .

By the way, we can't use Exclusive D3D11 anymore with HDR ? it disable HDR mode when entering Full Exclusive mode. so no need for it or it's not supported ?

Windowed mode is enough for HDR mode at the moment ?

no one ever said you need FSE mode.

Do you know if I still need to use Artifact removal with 1080p content with 4K TV ?

Also I should cancel Reduce dark halos around bright edges , too if I want Anime right ?

in the end of what Madshi says , he means if I have Nvidia and using driver 384.72 then my TV changes to HDR perfect ? because my TV changes to HDR with a small notification, but does it mean it's perfect and no conversion is happening without Enabling HDR from the windows 10 ?

you "need" artifact reduction to remove the artifacts if you don't see the difference don't use it.
your output resolution obviously has nothing todo with it.

you should only use setting you can see.

the description isn't wrong. but not sure if you need it in the first place.

5) Nvidia comes to the rescue of all HTPC users who want perfect quality for both SDR and HDR content: Nvidia's private HDR API allows madVR to dynamically switch the TV into and out of HDR mode, as needed. For this to work, you need to deactivate the OS "HDR and advanced color" switch.

yes. depends on the point of view.
without FSE you are not getting 10 bit output.

Is it typical for the "present queue" to drop when the progress bar appears in full screen? My "present queue" drops from 7-8/8 to 1-2/2 when the progress bar appears and this leads to dropped frames and possibly the culprit for audio sync issues.

You mean seek bar? Yes. That's by design. You're not supposed to watch the video with that bar visible. However, it shouldn't cause audio sync issues.

The reason for this is because otherwise the bar would have a delay of the number of frame in the present queue, which at 8-frames is pretty unpleasant.

Yes seek bar. Thanks for the feedback. I'm just trying to work through all of the components to figure out what is causing my audio seek issues.

without FSE you are not getting 10 bit output.

You can get HDR and 10bit output without FSE: just use the win10 HDR switch and play the video in windowed fullscreen (cf. last version release notes). Given how little HDR content is out there, switching HDR manually from time to time to get the best output possible isn't that big of a deal.

I have a problem have set HDR windowed mode because then it won't be 10 bit and only 8 bit. It says it's NV12 8 bit.

I needed to enable HDR in windows because then it won't be 10 bit and only D3D11 8 bit. I have a notification on my TV HDR mode when I run the HDR movie.

could you tell me what is wrong and what a settings I could change to fix it ?

Im curious, my PC seems to play all movies fine.
Except when I try and play a 10bit HDR movie.
Kodi seem's to be crashing....

What could be the cause of this?
Is this possibly the HEVC decoding I do with the GPU? (should I unclick that?)

(I am using Full Screen Exclusive on the older non-buggy NVIDIA Drivers)

Madshi, chances of SDR to HDR upconversion (https://opticalflow.wordpress.com/2016/05/05/sdr-to-hdr-conversion/)?
The whitepaper is MIA, wonder if this can be done in real time, likely not yet.. Maybe some years off.

Stating specific and exact revision number of driver is better than saying "older non-buggy". GPU? OS? What hardware decoding mode are you using? DXVA2 copy-back is recommended.

Ryzen 5 1600
GTX 1080
Nvidia Driver Version 378.92
Windows 10 Enterprise Creators Editions
Using DXVA2 Copy Back
(Using Ryzen 5 results in 90-100% CPU-load and not filled qeue's on for example "The World in HDR in 4k demo" so that's not an option either, even if it would have been, it still crashes)

After some testing it crashes on both windowed and on FSE, so atleast that's not the culprit.

Are we talking HEVC 10 bit or VP9 10 bit?

HEVC 10 bit

Ps. Im using DSPlayer, not MPC-HC.
Not sure if that's the culprit?

How to watch this video in potplayer + lav filters + MAdvr in 10 bit ? I'm only getting 8 bit.

EDIT : need to enable windows 10 creators HDR ON.

D3D11 windowed 10bit
but it still says NV12 8 bit, does it need to be 10bit ?

This video is working fine for me from start to end , CPU 40% I7 3770K and GPU max 1080 ,

Recently i removed k-lite codec pack and changed to individual installation for MPC-HC, MadVR and codecs. Now MadVR is not displaying UTvideo files anymore. MPC-HC screen stay black with no playback when start UTvideo file. For other codecs(MagicYUV,H264,HEVC) it plays fine. Changing renderer from madVR to EVR-CP UTvideo plays correctly.

Im not 100% secure but i think i played UTvideo files with MadVR over k-lite installation and played fine, so i dont know what become wrong. Any advise?

Just use MPC-HC + LavFilters+ madVR you don't need anything else. add the filters to the external filters list and everything will work. if you want better players use Potplayer x64 bit or MPDN x64 . MPC-HC is slow old and look ugly without any great features that potplayer can do. 3D - Screenshots - Repeat - ,, just about everything.

MPC-HC is slow old
Slow ? Have you proofs it is slower than another player ?
Old ? Are you the kind of user who needs his monthly updates whereas he doesn't even need a new feature ?
PotPlayer stole code from other projects and so is not welcomed on this forum. MPDN x64 is an alternative to madVR and recommending it in this thread is not welcomed too.

I don't want to debate this off-topic anymore. I just wanted to tell you I saw what you did, and it was ugly.

Ps. Im using DSPlayer, not MPC-HC.
Not sure if that's the culprit?

Plot thikkens....
Changed DSPlayer for MPC-HC, still crashes.
Or well, rather it doesn't play.
Then if I open it just in MPC-HC, it plays fine O.o

Anyone have a clue?

No clue. Which one is it in MPC-HC: "still crashes", "doesn't play" or "plays fine"? I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific.

Which codecs do you have installed ?

Make sure you have only Lav Filters + madVR only .

Did you set the player correctly ? how does it crash, is there video ? sound ?

What the event viewer error say ? it might tell us if it's DLL with other program, plugin, software, driver.

You have Windows 10 x64 with newest drivers ? Nvidia , ATI ?

I have actually manged to "fix" it.

I am/was only using Lav Filters + MadVR.

What was happening was I tried to play a movie located on my NAS, quite a large movie I may add.
Upon opening it with DSplayer from inside Kodi, Kodi/DSplayer would just crash. (not sure why it crashes with a generic error)
Upon opening it with MPC-HC it faired "Fine", until I started it from inside Kodi.
Starting MPC-HC from inside Kodi it took ALOT longer to actually be able to play it. Up to the verge of me thinking it just wouldn't load/work. For some reason it pulled in ALOT more data before even being able to play.

(Noticed this when I was looking at Task Manager when doing the troubleshooting)

So thanks for the help and advices :)

I've been wondering for which chroma upscaling to use for 1080p movies. The display is 2560x1080p, so I guess Jinc or super-xbr 100 or NGU? Any hints will be appreciated :)

New Nvidia drivers (384.94) have a HDR fix for windows 10.

Now its possible to activate the HDR and advanced color slider when using Nvidia colour settings even when set as RGB full 8-Bit.

They seem to have fixed the Nvidia HDR API. When starting a HDR file with the windows option disabled the screen does switch to HDR so that suggests working Nvidia API.

The problem is when going into full screen exclusive mode HDR turns off! When going back to windowed HDR is still off only restarting file enables HDR again. Disabling exclusive mode allows windowed and fullscreen HDR playback.

These drivers didn't change anything AFAICT. It's been working exactly this way since the latest madVR release. Details on what is and isn't working and why are in this post. (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1810891&postcount=44259)

1080p height monitor so you're only doubling chroma once. I'd say just go NGU, whichever level your GPU can handle (although higher than "low" for chroma is probably a waste in most cases).

Are you cropping black bars for wider than 16/9 content though? That would change things a bit I guess, though I'd still use NGU chroma upscaling. But for the for extra upscaling needed I'd rely on Jinc.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm mostly watching 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 movies, I was using Jinc for chroma and image upscaling. Will test NGU for chroma, image doubling is not needed in my case.

Thanks for the link that explains the FSE.

As for the drivers Nvidia HDR mode hasn't worked in the last two driver sets one of which predates the madvr update.

Edit- The Microsoft HDR toggle isn't working in RGB mode but does work using Nvidia 422 colour mode which didn't work in previous drivers. I needed to change to default colour settings for it to work. So they have changed something

Actually, I'm working on a solution to automate the creation of optimized custom resolutions right now. Once that's available, I wouldn't expect you to get frame drops/repeats any more often than once every couple of hours. Hopefully even once every couple of days. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but that's the plan. FWIW, hardware clock circuits can change their speed slightly when they're cold vs. warm. So in the first couple of minutes after a cold start, the danger of getting frame drops will be higher than after the PC has warmed up to usual operating temperatures, because usual operating temperatures will of course be what we'll be aiming to optimize for.

The Nvidia HDR API works for madVR because of fixes madshi put in v0.91.11. I was running 384.76 at the time and it worked on those drivers, too.

This, specifically, has worked for me since 382.19. HDR is kind of all over the place, though, so maybe this driver did fix something on your system. <shrug>

What does it means

H264 , 8 bit 4:2:0 -> NV12 , 8 bit 4:2:0 ?

It usually was NV12 , 8 bit without conversion or something with h264. I downgraded from 384.72,94 .

when watching 1080p MKV Bluray rip movies ?

I'm using drivers 382.53

H264 , 8 bit 4:2:0 -> NV12 , 8 bit 4:2:0

this means everything is working as it should. it just means 8 bit h264 is decoded to and send as NV12 8 bit 4::2:0 nothing else nothing new.

Anyone who uses TV + Potplayer or MPC-HC with madVR as Exclusive Full screen and you use 60 Hz , do you have the problem that it changes the refresh rate to 59.94 while it does it there is long black blink ? it happened on both my Tv's Philips 7007 LED and now with OLED LG55C6 , is there anyway to fix it ? why when going full screen in the program causing it to change refresh rate ? how can I set it to use 60 Hz ?

Thanks

This happens if the monitor is connected using HDMI, truly annoying especially if you have multiple monitors.
I could solve this using Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) and removing unused resolutions or using an extension block to make it report like it's connected using DVI and thus avoiding this problem, however you must do this every time you update GPU drivers. I ended up connecting my monitors using DVI but that might not be possible for you.

When using smooth motion, does it matter whether I run 59 hz (59.933 hz actual) or 60 hz? 59 hz is better for timings, but I remember madshi saying higher refresh rates are better with smooth motion.

Asmodian
27th July 2017, 20:41
No. 0.1% faster does not matter at all. ;)

Use 75 Hz instead of 60 Hz if you can but 59 = 60 Hz as far as smooth motion is concerned.

clsid
27th July 2017, 21:13
Try both and compare average render time. 59hz might result in less blended frames, which means better quality and performance.

sauma144
27th July 2017, 21:49
I thought smoothmotion was optimized for 60hz!
If it's really better with high framerate, it would be interesting to let madVR switches the framerate of the current display to the highest available one automatically.

clsid
27th July 2017, 21:57
No, it isn't optimized for a specific framerate. And you should not take it literally that highest is best for it, just generally speaking.

59.9 and 60 are practically same value, so using 60 purely because it is highest is nonsense. 59.9 may be better match with most video content framerates.

huhn
27th July 2017, 22:10
while the difference between 59p and 60p is not worth it higher is always better with smoothmotion. smoothmotion is fixing clock deviations so you should get the "same" number of blended frames with 59 and 60. the really important part is the time a blended frame is shown.

clsid
27th July 2017, 22:48
I disagree. Smoothmotion is also useful when you have a perfect clock, but framerate is not a exact multiple. In that case 59.94 (2.5 x 23.976) would be better than 60.0. But given the blending threshold, it might not even make much of a difference. But this is a pointless discussion. They can just try and test if there is a difference or not.

huhn
27th July 2017, 23:19
but a perfect clock is impossible i mean it has to be absolute perfect.

so even with a repeated frame every 2 hour you are off 21 ms after 1 h.
and do we even start in perfect sync?

with a perfect 100% matching clocks it would only need to blend a frame every 5 frames but this is not going to happen is this even remotely possible with direct show?

Asmodian
28th July 2017, 00:34
and do we even start in perfect sync?

No, even with an absolutely perfect clock madVR does not time the start of playback to match v-sync so 60 v.s. 59.94 Hz makes no difference at all to smooth motion in any situation.

JarrettH
28th July 2017, 03:54
Interesting discussion on the topic. Yeah, that is my prime question: does smooth motion nullify accurate clock timings. Less blended frames is a good thing. I'm sure madshi will answer too.

huhn
28th July 2017, 04:10
the clock deviation doesn't matter with smoothmotion.

the higher the frame rate the lower the number of blended frames and the shorter the time they are shown.
