Unless you are using Coax/Toslink connection (HDMI or Analogue are be preferable) and need to bitstream audio, you should be using ReClock, with your display at 24.0Hz in my opinion.
Considering that most video cards seem to have trouble with 24/1.001, unless you actually have 23.97602, you're better off at 24.0. Even 23.97602 does not guarantee that you have the exact sync correct.
Even a single dropped frame or presentation glitch is very noticeable in my opinion. Unless you're blinking when it happens, it's hard to miss.
BTW is it possible with reclock to adjust the fps speed to that specific refresh rate? I mean, 23.973 or 23.997. Or does it just work for the predefinited ones 24.000/23.976 only?When framerate is set to "Auto" in ReClock and it reports entering CINEMA Mode, it is adapting to your video card clock in realtime.
Ignore anything madVR says about estimated dropped frames (there should be none when using ReClock, unless your GPU is dropping frames because it is too slow for madVR) or anything ReClock says about refresh rates/framerates.
I think it may actually have been fixed in the latest version (not at my PC to check) but for a long time ReClock used to say that CINEMA Mode was setting the framerate to 24.000 fps which was erroneous. (ReClock was working correctly, the message was wrong)
If you can, I recommend using WASAPI audio output with ReClock, upsampling to the highest bit-depth your soundcard accepts, and 96kHz audio. (going beyond 96kHz actually degrades audio quality) Until you get this right, you will probably get a lot of errors about unsupported formats.
WASAPI audio can be trickier to set up though, so if you're having trouble, you may want to skip it and let Windows handle the audio output.

Thats just a display thing, it'll sync to your display refresh rate as close as it can.

I do agree and that's exactly why I'm using the old exclusive mode (seems to be impossible to get glitch free playback on my machine with the drivers I need for my games).
However, in my case there should be an occasional dropped frame (71,93/23,976 and I don't use Reclock) -I don't remember how often exactly- but I've never seen it. madVR keeps saying "1 dropped frame every 10 minutes, 1hour, 1 day" etc without any consistency (just like when using Reclock).
With 24fps content however I definitely notice the jump every 41 seconds and madVR does show it correctly. (but my display can do 72,001hz too anyway)
That's why I'm asking kerman if he sees anything wrong in the first place, you can't just blindly trust all these numbers. But since he also sees dropped frames in the stats he's got a problem other than hz/fps sync IMO and Reclock is not the answer.

What is your CPU usage like? Have you tried a different video decoder?

Q6600@3.60GHz rarely goes over 4-5% during normal playback
GPU is HD6950 2GB and unlocked (shaders) to HD6970

Do you still get dropped frames if you use the new exclusive mode, or run it in windowed mode? You may have presentation glitches, but at least it's another variable to test.
Ignore anything madVR says about estimated frame drops.

I have automatic fullscreen exclusive mode enabled. Im wondering if I have to change something on Catalyst control center , under "Advanced Video Color" or "Video Quality"...
Is it possible the dxva2 on LAV decoder to have something to do with this in anyway? Just to discard options to isolate where the problem relies. Maybe it be the plasma after all. Dont have any other laptop to try though...
Regarding to madVR, is it still of use when not resizing the video? I mean, for 1:1 pixel mapping (1080p) material, where no scaling is needed, regardless of this, does still improve the image quality anyway?

With madVr I can't play FRAPS video (no matter if YV12 or RGB), it doesn't show any image.
Tested with MPC HC and its internal decoder and also LAV.

If you're using HDMI it's possible that you're not getting full RGB output (0-255) if you're using an HDTV resolution (e.g. 1920x1080 vs. 1920x1200). But that screenshot looks far worse than that. Are you sure you have color bit depth set to 32-bit, and not something like 16-bit?

Yes, I am definitely using 32-bit color depth (True Color).
And your right I am using HDMI at Limited RGB at 1920x1080 (I thought that was preferred for TV/Video). I'll do some tests later at full RGB.

And your right I am using HDMI at Limited RGB at 1920x1080 (I thought that was preferred for TV/Video). I'll do some tests later at full RGB.
I don't think NVIDIA has that setting. AMD has two, one it calls "pixel format", which affects everything, and the other one is in the video section and is called "dynamic range" and only affects certain renderers like EVR, and madVR only when using DXVA2 deinterlacing. NV only has the latter.
What you need to change to RGB Full is the equivalent to "pixel format" which unfortunately for some (most?) people requires a PC resolution, or doing a custom HDTV resolution.

@entrecour Before you go chasing rainbows and making or testing a bunch of settings, I want you to know that I tested on my setup and the grayramp.ytp looks identical with my card. To test for gradient transitions, try looking at the smallramp.ytp or just get a regular grayscale ramp test pattern, such as the one from the AVS HD 709 calibration disc or MP4 files. You can easily tell when dithering isn't being used on a pattern such as this.

Yes, you remind me that the NVIDIA fullrange (0-255) settings are messed up - if I use those whilst it does make a change of some sort I can't get the flashing bars in the AVC black levels test.
Every time I have tried setting up a custom resolution in the past my TV doesn't like it and I had to plug in another monitor to reset, so in the end I left it at the 1920x1080 native HD setting. I guess I can have another shot at it though. :eek:

Thanks, that's good to know. I tested smallramp.ytp and the ramp in AVC (see screenshots below) and I think they look OK, there are somelines visible but nothing as horrible as with greyramp.

I have gone back to .79 again. It seems when I find one fix it brings up other issues. It seems with .80 I have to use the old render path with 25hz material on a 50hz display and the new render path for 23.976 material on a 23.976 display. All in all it seems for what ever reasons 080 gives my system problems filling the backbuffers. Going back to 079 and all is well again.

Yes it does help but not totally. Basically it all boils down to the present queues not filling in .80 like they do in 079 when using identical settings with 25hz material at 50hz. 23.976 is fine.

Yes I do and here is where the problem is..... in 079 it does not really drop and if it does dip it never goes to zero. In 080 it does drop, quite often at and hits zero at regular intervals.

I'm far more likely to get presentation glitches when the present queue is full rather than not. In fact, I suspect that if the "limit rendering times" option limited them enough that it would never fill up, it might fix my problems—your suggested flush settings really helped, but didn't eliminate presentation glitches with longer videos.

Gah, I (hopefully temporarily) bricked my 5770, reporting here that the good old 4670 is working fine with madVR's new options too! I miss the "dynamic range" option in CCC though, anyone knows if this can be accessed with DXVA Checker and which setting it is? I have 3 settings that say "dynamic range", but they don't seem to do anything. Also, I'm running Win 7-64, but I assume with madVR I have to run the 32-bit DXVA Checker version, right?

with 0.80, when switching between deinterlacing and no deinterlacing, theres still the difference that colours look more vibrant when deinterlacing is off compared to when it is activated (or the other way round, colours look more washed out with active deinterlacing). is this how its supposed to be? it looks like as if levels get set to TV when deinterlacing is active in these cases.

Deinterlacing will most likely activate your video cards post-processing. Just make sure everything is turned off in the video cards control panel.

I dont have CCC in windows startup and therefore I always have this difference in levels when using madvr deinterlacing. but as soon as I start CCC, this difference is gone.
any ideas why this is?

I think without CCC it's reverting to default settings. Any reason you're not running it? You can probably change defaults and valuse with DXVA Checker too.

I long found out that it's just not worth to disable it, especially since Win Vista/7 have much better RAM management, and given we easily have 4GB RAM nowadays, what it uses is not really much. With XP I used to disable all control panels, sound too.

With my DVI+HDMI setup I have to switch Pixel Format from YCbCr to FullRGB every time I'm changing refresh rate to 24 or 50. Only 60 is stiked with FullRGB by default. Whats why I don't use auto switches or disable CCC at all.

What are the best Nividia Control Panel settings to go along with madvr? There seems to be less video-settings then with ATI drivers. There are some settings thou but at default they are set to let the videoplayer decide. Should everything just be left at default? this is with the latest non-beta 285.62 drivers

I would love to get some help from experts here. I own a colorimeter and these are the results I obtained with HCFR.

the gamma is already flat so I do not need to correct it
I tried to make a 3dlut file with madvr ycms utility but it downloads the utility and yields an error
I tried to make a 3dlut using ycms command line and this config file

Your queue sizes are quite high. Please try to set the GPU queue size to a lower value. E.g. try 8 or even 6. Maybe that helps?
Thank you, that was a sound advice. :) I've unchecked "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" box and set GPU queue to 8 as you have suggested and now the playback is fine. It seems that madVR queue auto adjustment doesn't work properly on 4k video, it just utilizes a huge amount of gpu RAM. The biggest result I had was about 1 gig on my 470gtx. Hope you'll fix it in the next build. And again, thank you.:)

I've the same or similar problem on my Mac Mini 2011 with integrated Intel HD3000 graphic card (no other card, only intel). When I choose MadVR renderer, players (tried both MPC HC and Potplayer) freeze on the startup, the sound is coming but there is not video at all. The only thing I can do is to killing the player from the task manager. I can reach tray menu, and I tried all the options available but none of them helped to solve this problem.
Just as a note, I also have also a notebook with Nvidia graphic card which I can use MadVR without no problem without any problem. So I assume that this problem specific to Intel graphic cards or Macs with Intel graphic cards?
Unfortunately my sister is gone for many months, and with her the laptop with shared GPU. So I don't have any way to test & fix this problem at the moment... :scared:
Yes my 13" inch 2010 model macbook pro's gpu is integrated into the cpu with shared memory. However, it used to work fine with windows XP professional 32 bit on my bootcamp before changing to windows 7 ultimate 32bit now.

Indeed, the settings dialog allow up to 8, it just ignores any value above 3.
The OSD on exclusive mode and windowed shows something like 2-3/3 backbuffers.
Switching back to windowed mode also shows the same issue.

Cosmetic bug:
If the ffmpeg decoders aren't present, madVR options will still default to enabling the H.264 and MPEG2 decoder. It should ideally uncheck and grey out those options.
Kinda true. The settings dialog is also capable of editing the settings of other machines in the LAN (if you allow madVR to access the LAN). For other machines madVR doesn't know whether the decoder dlls are available or not. Well, I'll check if I can gray these settings out locally, at least, but I'm not sure right now if the settings dialog even knows whether the edited settings are local or not.
Suggestion:
If the ffmpeg decoders aren't present during filter registration, then don't include the H264/MPEG2/VC-1 mediatypes.

Currently it is only possible to access the settings when there is an active instance of madVR. Any plans to add an offline configuration mode?
This is on my to do list. I'd like to have this feature myself, just didn't get around implementing it yet.
For selecting deinterlacement ON/OFF and video/film mode it might be cool to add a translucent type of toggle button in the osd that one could simply click to change stuff as an alternative to the tediousness of long hotkey activation.

But regardless of audio/video clock deviation, 23.976 material running on 23.973Hz video signal (thats what madVR says at statics on display) should produce a dropped frame every 6min aprox.
No, that's not correct. You're missing the fact that the video refresh rate is measured based on the system clock, while the DirectShow graph is synced to the audio hardware clock. The audio hardware clock always deviates slightly from the system clock. So the number of dropped/repeated frames also depends on how much the audio clock deviates from the system clock.
Just ignore the "xxx drops per xxx" estimate which madVR lists in the OSD. The only thing that really counts is the number of real frame drops/repeats you get.
Yesterday watched a full movie with 0 dropped frames at the end. Today, on another one 25 dropped frames!!
Same movie frame rate, same display refresh rate? I'd suggest to try to find out why you got those 25 frame drops. First step would be to check whether the first movie always ends up with 0 frame drops while the other one always ends up with 25 frame drops. Or maybe it's random? In any case, check the madVR OSD to see which queues are getting empty when the frame drops occur and which queues stay full and report back here.
the lipsync bug was obviously not madvr related, it rather seems to be related to my monitor taking too long to change the display mode and JRiver by default not waiting long enough to start the audio (fixed with the "play silence" setting). In MPC the problem never happened.
But did v0.79 behave differently?
With madVr I can't play FRAPS video (no matter if YV12 or RGB), it doesn't show any image.
Tested with MPC HC and its internal decoder and also LAV.

ok, not quite. those changes didnt seem to have any effect. what actually has an effect is whether CCC has been started or not. I dont have CCC in windows startup and therefore I always have this difference in levels when using madvr deinterlacing. but as soon as I start CCC, this difference is gone.
any ideas why this is?

Depends. If you always switch madVR to film mode when watching movies then you can disable IVTC in the NVidia control panel. If you sometimes stick to video mode even when watching movies, then I'd suggest to keep IVTC enabled in the NVidia control panel. In the end it doesn't really harm to have it enabled, I guess. It might slightly slow your GPU down if you have native video content (sports, music concerts) but I'm not sure if you would ever notice it.

I don't remember the exact parameters required by madVR from the top of my head. It'd be much easier if you could get the madVR yCMS utility to work.
I've the same or similar problem on my Mac Mini 2011 with integrated Intel HD3000 graphic card (no other card, only intel). When I choose MadVR renderer, players (tried both MPC HC and Potplayer) freeze on the startup, the sound is coming but there is not video at all. The only thing I can do is to killing the player from the task manager.
Have you installed proper drivers for your GPU? Try the latest drivers from Intel's homepage. If that doesn't help you could create a debug log and upload it somewhere for me to look at.

Toggle the A.I. setting. Repeat the above to create a second screenshot. Now finally compare the screenshots to see if there's any difference. Please note that if you have dithering enabled, the screenshots will never be bit perfect. If you want to test for bit perfection, you need to disable dithering.

For those of you who have problems with v0.80, with v0.79 working just fine for you, here are a couple of test builds:

Please let me know which of these test builds work fine for you and which don't. Basically there are 3 changes in v0.80 which could eventually cause the problem for you, so these test builds just test every possible combination of these 3 changes.
