I don't think that this bug was mentioned here before (that HDR setting modifies SDR content as well).
It was, several times. Just don't set HDR nits to < 256 nits

I'm back to 0.90.17 ; that was the version that I used for a long time
I have been using that version too since it came out, and it has been working flawlessly. Newer versions seem to have features I don't need, such as HDR support.

Hey guys, I set up madVR and did all the settings. I have a decent hardware, enough to use nnedi3 but still I get dropped frames most of the times. I believe madVR is not using Intel instead of nVidia. Any solutions?
System: Asus G551V Game Series.
nVidia Geforce GTX960m, 16 Gig Ram, Core i7 CPU.
Software:
MPC-HC 1.7.10
madVR09021
LAV Filters
FFDSHOW
I installed 64bit but then I changed everything to 32bit.
Settings:
I did everything based on ezoden.

iīm having some strange random freezing/crashing after pausing or seeking the video
i donīt know how to reproduces because is very random
but with some especifics x265 files occurs more...
happens on mpc-hc and mpc-be x86
also occurs when i tag files that have wrong framerate metada...
sometimes all freez until i restart my pc sometimes the image freezes but the audio continue to play... but i have to restart the pc because can control nothing
edited
actually its not a file problem, the freeze/crashing occurs every time i pause a movie on FSE
the only way to pause without crashing is exiting to windowed mode and pausing
using laest lav madvr and mpc-hc
on windows 8.1 x64, GPU nvidia 930m driver 368.29
maybe this started to happen after the last windows update 3 days ago but i can t say exactly because i thought was random crashes but discovered that is not...

FYI, the latest NVidia drivers may produce some issues when MFAA and/or DSR are enabled by forcing the Task Scheduler service and those reliant on that service to shut down. It does not affect all systems. In my case I get Received Bad Stub or Bad Stub errors

Hi guys,
I need your opinion about doing the good choice for a graphic card (I own a GTX 970).
I heard Geforce 1070/1080 are coming...
Is there any advantage moving to them (except for HEVC hw decoding) ?
1 - Due to HDMI 2.0 limitation, 2160p50 or 60 with RGB 444 at 10 bits is not possible
2 - Even if 10 bits option is available in the Nvidia Control Panel, this options seems working only for pro cards (quadro)
Looks like only ATI cards would produce a good 10 bits outptut.
You confirm these ?
From your point of view, what is the best and the bad between;
2160p60 - RGB 444 - 8 bpc
2160p60 - RGB 422 - 10 bpc
2160p60 - RGB 420 - 10 bpc
Maybe I should wait for the new ATI cards coming at the end of the month.
Is ATI do a better job than Nvidia for MadVr/Lav stuff ?
regards.
What settings are you using and at what resolution?
Generally speaking, if you do anything else than madVR, nvidia 1080 is unbeatable.
Ati brags about beating nvidia GTX 1080 with 2 cards in crossfire, but madVR doesn't work with SLI or with Crossfire, this is important to keep in mind.
Short story is that best quality you can achieve is by going for GTX1080, if you also do gaming.
If you use lower settings and no 4k, or you don't do gaming, you can settle for GTX 1070 or GTX980 or GTX 970, even lower.
Depends on your needs.

I have been recently seeing a weird behavior where avg render times are increasing 5-10 seconds into any scene (say from 34ms to 38-39ms). What's weird though is, if I start the playback few seconds later, the scene that had increased render time previously is fine, but now next scene gets the hit and so on. So it looks like something is happening over time that is bringing up the render time and seems unrelated to a given scene.
I am doing nnedi32 luma doubling for 1080->2160(23.976), and sharpen edges + enhance detail + deringing is on.
Has anyone seen this? Any quick tips I can try first?

I have seen the render times increase like that when the video card starts declocking, either due to temperature or something else.

one question
has anyone compared any HDR demos on a HDR tv and compared the picture quality to what you get here with madvr?
i have a feeling that you can adjust the picture for HDR better here than what you can do from the HDR TVs which is more locked.
it would be cool to see some comparision photos from madvrs HDR performance and the tvs native.
also does the new GTX 1080 cards play hevc decoded videos smooth ?
the only problem here with the HDR demos is that they are a jerky with a GTX780 card
one more suggestion for HDR is if its possible to add the APL (average pixel level) information?
it seems that APL on most of the LG demos are higher than what UHD movies is at.
UHD movies are graded around 100 nits APL only but the LG demos are way to bright overall i think
you can darken or brighten the picture with different peak brightness settings but i dont think its the right thing to do?
if you choose an higher peak brightness than the tv or monitor has the picture gets darker overall but you also loose details in the highlights right?

Yes, I did comparisions and of course they look different, IMO two different rendering technics inside so it's not surprising. To make a photo about it would be irrelevant.
Different thing:
For my eyes the 0.90.21 has more saturated highlights, then the 0.90.17, for me the latter one is more realistic and looks better. In case Sony HDR demo, the clouds at sunset are too yellowish with 0.90.21, it would be fine to have an option to set up the compressed highlight's saturation manually.
Question for madshi: Which is your reference HDR video?

hi there
A little help please.
I'm using a Cherry-Trail based mini PC as a media player. I appreciate it's a slow machine but it's been working for a while.
To add to the pot I also have a Ethernet over power link which I know it's not the best solution.
My problem is that recently the buffer slowly drops to zero and then the movie starts stuttering.
I have tried several things including resetting everything and I have noted the following: when using MadVR the CPU almost immediately throttles down to minimum speed while CPU utilisation ramps up to 100%. When using the default renderer, the CPU stays mainly at maximum speed.
Something is triggering the CPU and I believe that the OS is then unable to feed the stream quickly enough because it does not have enough resources. I'd be tempted to exclude the network as Windows task manager tells me that when I PAUSE the playback, the network bandwidth increases quite a lot for a few seconds (while the buffer is replenished). This should prove that the network link is ok. If I transfer a file from my NAS the link is indeed running at 100% (100Mbit).
Can you guys think of anything that may help? I was working till a couple of weeks ago - cannot remember if I updated something, probably I have, I can try downgrading to a previous version.
Thank you!
Tony

Which buffer is slowly dropping? The decoder queue or the render queue?
It really sounds like you are overheating, maybe a fan is full of dust, the heatsink loosened, or something?
I have trouble imagining that the -almost- immediate throttling could mean anything but overheating.

Hi
Thanks for your reply
I'm not in front of my computer now but it's the first buffer on the left.
I can assure you this is not the case. I'm monitoring using CPU monitor and the same software tells me that cpu speed drops to minimum and temperatures are within normal range - well below thermal throttling.
When not using madvr the speeds are much higher and so are the temperatures.
Only thing could be if the GPU is overheating (or simply not being used by the standard renderer which would explain why cpu slows down with madvr) but it's integrated in the cpu so I reckon my cpu temperature should include the GPU one.
Thanks

Hi I am very new to this and recently I'm hoping to try out the stereoscopic 3D function of madVR but with no luck. I try to follow steps I can find on the forum but somehow I can't get it to work. May I ask how can I play a stereoscopic 3D movie on TV? I'll really appreciate it if there are detailed steps as I'm no quite familiar with this.
What I've done is trying to use MPC-HC and MPC-BE to play a 3D mvc mkv movie I've made using makemkv. I've done similar settings on both players.
I disabled all formats from the internal filter, added external filters name LAV Video Decoder, LAV Audio Decoder and LAV Splitter Source, which are of version 6.81.1.17-git and set all of them as "preferred".
In the LAV Video Decoder, I've set the hardware decoder to be NVIDIA CUVID and RGB level as untouched, and leave everything as is.
As for the LAV Audio decoder, I checked all the audio formats to be bit-streamed for better sound quality directly output to my AMP, then leave everything as is.
In the LAV Splitter Source, I leave everything as is.
Then I selected madVR which is of version 0.90.21 as the DirectShow option.
In madVR setings, I selected D format in device->properties as auto, unchecked "enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode" in general settings, checked "enable stereo 3d playback" and "when playing 3d content" and chose "enable", and also checked "restore os stereo 3d settings when media player is closed". I have also unchecked all items that has the keyword "DXVA" in the "trade quality for performance" tab as I've heard that has something to do with playing 3d. Everything else are leave as is.
My computer is I think what people called a optimus machine which has Intel HD Graphics 530 and also a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphic card. I've set both players to use the Nvidia graphic card though. And is running on Win 10 64 bit.
When I'm using MPC-HC to play a 3d video, it changes the framerate of my TV from 60fps to 24 fps, but doesn't change the TV into 3d mode. I got it to change into 3d mode once but forgot how, yet it is still only showing a 2d image even the TV 3d mode is on. As for the MPC-BE player, it changes the tv to 3d mode every time but always immediately crashes my computer and triggering a blue screen stating there is something wrong with the Intel graphic card driver.
Can someone please help me with it? With some detailed step by step methods? I'll really appreciate it. Thanks!

It's pretty glorious. On 1080p video going to a 1440p monitor, I disable all tradeoffs and use NNEDI3 64 neuron on luma, 32 neuron on chroma, and then Jinc AR+LL for everything else. No dropped frames.

Nice that it works out for you, but scaling 1080p -> 1440p with NNEDI3 is pure overkill.
The resources are really better invested in Jinc AR SL + SR3 or 4 if you like it sharp.
I got a 1440p display too and I compared many real scenes with 1080p -> 1440p Jinc vs. NNEDI3, I doubt anyone would ever pass a double blind test for this.

Still recommend Super-XBR 100-125 for chroma upscaling, also it's a lot less resource hungry than NNEDI3. Would recommend comparing them and deciding for yourself.

Sure. But what else can I spend the power on, if I have it to spare and want to?
For anime I can run SVP - still figuring out best possible settings total. That definitely forces me to turn off NNEDI3 or drastically reduce settings.
But for normal film, can't make it better any other way really?

Question regarding 3d madvr reclock and mpchc.
I like to use reclock to speed up 23.976 to 24. However reclock doesn't seem to play nice with 3d movies using madvr and mpchc.
What are people's solutions for this? Is this a problem for you. Is there a good automatic solution?

Sure. But what else can I spend the power on, if I have it to spare and want to?
I think that's the wrong way to look at it. You should compare before and after screenshots and judge what to run based on those results.
Your call, just seems pointless using ~100W to do something you don't even notice. For lower res content those settings would make more of an impact but upscaling 1080P with NNEDI3 then downscaling with SSIM (likely 2D AR LL) isn't going to do much to the final result. Hell you might be better off just using Jinc AR. If it was a 4K screen, well that'd be a different story.
Focus on results not specifically on how many neurons of NNEDI3 you can set, this does seem to be a rather reoccurring theme here with people just taking the short route ticking boxes and setting things as high as they'll go and running into performance issues as a result..

The right way would be to teach you how to troubleshoot it yourself layer be layer.
First thing first, disable SVP.
The rendering time (ms) should be less than the movie frame time (ms), this can only happen when the queues are full, all of them.
If one of the queues is not filling there is a problem in that region responsible for filling that queue, you'll see that as rendering time greater than frame time.
Please report what is the status of your queues and rendering time (average).

Thanks for the quick reply. Alright I seem to have fixed the issue, the GTX 1070's core and memory speeds were fluctuating (going from 200Mhz to 2000Mhz+), so I went to nVidia control panel, and set MPC.exe &MPC64 both to performance mode basically. This stopped the fluctuation of Core & Memory speeds and set them to MAX constant as soon as I open MPC.
Which worked like a charm. Here's a picture with SVP running, with my SVP Settings, and with the chroma upscaling you see + in upscaling refinement I also have SuperRes now selected at (4, linear light, anti-bloating, and anti-ringing enabled, strength @ 100%).
http://imgur.com/OonTMo4
With the 280X I couldn't do SuperRes + Jinc (well I did, but GPU usage was around 90% and fans turned really loud with the 280x)....
Anyway I still can't do image doubling, as soon as I select double luma resolution and chroma resolution with NEDI, NEDI3, or Super-XBR, the dropped frames begin to happen.

Yes, GPU usage increases from 60% before enabling double luma & chroma resolutions, to 99%+ after enabling them and the dropped frames begin.
That's with SVP running @ 75FPS of course.
EDIT: Note that 720p videos upscaled to 1080p run fine with NEDI double luma and chroma (with GPU @ 93% usage), but 1080p videos drop frames.
May I ask why you have chosen the integrated Intel one as a processing device instead of the nVidia GPU?
Because that's for SVP not Madvr. It allows for extra headroom for Madvr to work with.
My HD 4600 Overclocked to 1.5Ghz can assist SVP with GPU acceleration without too much trouble. This allowed my 280X and now my GTX 1070 to have more headroom to work with in Madvr.

I haven't finalized the settings yet. But I did a quick comparison with my 980 Ti settings.
You can see it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V2aj45_h6nsCTYqY5H-1KEUS8hk97RIdYcnZuIWkQMA/
I also underclock my gfx cards to be 100% silent, meaning no noise from the fans what so ever (I am very picky about noise). So the gfx card speeds are not what you use out of the box.
All in all, very happy with the 1080 for madvr!
edit: I am able to bump the NNEDI3 image doubling from 64 to 128 now with the GTX 1080 for my main 1080p profile of typical 23.976fps content at 4k res.

I am having problems with the 3D play back. I am using a optimus computer which uses both intel and Nvidia graphic cards and for some reason I can't select the Nvidia for MPC- HC to work on by normal means. I found a workaround online which is making a copy of the exe file of mpc- hc and change 5he name of it then I can choose to use the Nvidia graphic card. However when I play a MVc mkv with it, it immediately crashes my computer and a blue screen pops up saying there is a problem with the intel graphic driver. When I'm using the original one which only uses the intel graphic card, it displays 3D content correctly but with no sound. What can I do to fix it? My set up us to bit stream directly to my AMP but it's not working when it's a 3D video

100 is great, anything higher is a bit too sharp. Easily noticeable in animation...causes ringing.
Truth be told, I prefer Jinc for all my scaling needs. It has minimal artifacts and is clean without excessive sharpness. You can always super-res it up a bit to get it cleaner.

AB for SuperRes + SSIM AR allow you to increase the sxbr sharpness, anyway it's all about finding the magical looking combo to your eyes and I sure as hell did with SSIM 2D 100% + sxbr75 + SR@2 LL AB@75%. Not keen on messing with anything anymore as everything looks glorious to me :)

Hi, maybe this is just a lack of understanding on my part in which case I apologize, but I wonder if the aspect ratio automatically selected for this 16:9 display is wrong.
For a tv file with resolution 1920x1088 and a draw resolution of 1920x1074, 1.79:1 is auto selected. 1920x1088 is 1.77:1 and 16:9 is 1.78:1. If one overrides it to 16:9 it pulls it a tiny bit taller.
Same with a cinema file, draw of 1920x808=2.38:1, 21:9 (2.33:1) is auto selected, file resolution is 1920x816 which is 2.35. Manually selecting 2.35:1 pulls it a tiny bit taller.
The effect of pulling it taller makes circles more round and less squat.
What am I missing here? Thanks.
if the file is correctly created you don't have to change anything.
1088p and 816p are not a standard but as long as the file is correctly created the result should be fine.

Its not the Intel driver, just Intel made the decoding library. The two are not related in any way.
I've installed the driver and if I choose to use Nvidia gpu it still crashes and if I use the intel gpu, 3D image shows correctly but the audio is gone. I usually bit stream the audio but when I'm doing this there's no audio at all
