DoVi

I am Soooooo Over Dolby vision. It's a fkn' gimmick, and a joke of an implementation.

They were touting it as the second coming of jezuz, and then they released the comparison between player led and TV led dolby vision, OMG, the old player led looked like ffffn' Garbage.

And this was the same swill being promoted by the AV Influencer swamp saying things like, OMG shadow detail, WOW highlights.

ALL LIES..

Now with TV led, they finally have something like what MADVR was doing THE ENTIRE TIME.. . Dolby vision, Get Rekt...:angry::angry:

STILL HOLDING OUT for LMCL Hisense to save the day. REAL NITS please.

I'd take a 350 Real nit 80,000:1 contrast LMCL LCD over a 500 nit ABL 5000:1 LCD over a tonemap hell OLED any day.

Best expectation for LMCL on release may be upwards of 400 nits. (though not likely), But I've heard from sources that they may build international versions which don't respect the US/EU power efficiency laws. You'd have to import them .

:) Which TV do you have?
It's not just gimmick, unfortunately, otherwise I wouldn't use it instead of HDR10 and chroma 4:4:4 :) On LG Oleds (I guess other TVs are the same) DoVi uses different engine than LG's HDR10 engine that results in different image, DoVi just looks better / more natural.

just from a basic calibration standpoint
DOVI and HDR10+ have the same nits and same colorspace so they have to look the same after calibration.

and here is the problem after calibration and TVs do what ever they want so it's just a subjective difference especially if SDR -> HDR is involved.

and about FOV try 60-120 this is not SD anymore.

Pretty much this. DV is just a more standardized method of tone mapping vs wild west of what TV manufactures are doing, if you have content that's below your display capabilities that looks different in DV vs HDR10 than your settings are wack, plain and simple.

Sure, sometimes you get a full-fat DV layer on disc with extra bells and whistles if the studio is felling generous, but for streaming this is a moot point.

And here's a tip for converting SDR content to HDR: Don't do that.

I'm not talking about tonemapping but color reproduction, you have to see/experience this with your own eyes.

If tonemapping is not involved, then DV and HDR10 should look virtually the same, colors and all. Like I've said, if you're getting different results, than one or both of the modes are doing something wrong.

I'm NOT in the market for a new graphics card, fortunately, but I am curious.

I have two GTX series cards that I'm quite satisfied with. Is there anything in the RTX series of cards that would make a difference with madVR (current version, not test beta)? I know that Envy is RTX-based, but I assume any code madshi has written for the RTX will stay on the Envy side.

What I've found through my own testing with still images at 30-40 FOV, I would get it wrong between NGU and Lanczos ~50% of the time. I took screen shots and randomized the order.

Then when watching action content, moving pictures, it's was IMPOSSIBLE for me to tell the difference even a bit closer than that.

If the difference was 10-20watts , I'd say, hell go for it, but we're talking upwards of 100-200 watt difference if you push it all the way (depending on gpu), it's plainly NOT worth the expense and we're killing the earth damn it.
Have to emphasize that.
It is questionable to use much more power for a small gain in quality, but it is definitely out of question to use much more power for NO visible gain.
I'm pretty sure that many people buy a powerful GPU, max everything out and in a randomized blind test they can't tell the difference between bicubic and ngu high.
And then these people have to pay the electricity bill and the planet the bill of destruction - for nothing.

Powerful beamer + powerful audio + powerful computer -> watching a movie (in the end in worst case alone) consuming over 1 kW of power - ridiculous.

It's all about efficiency - you put in what to get what out of.

Dovi is shittier than that , there are no firm requirements and they'll sell out the label to basically anyone.

Originally there was supposed to be specific hardware for dovi, then they loosened that, then it went to software, then eventually they diluted that too based on different capabilities of the chipset the TV used.

It's become a worthless label, and you're at the mercy of how the TV manufacturer conducts. This is a through departure from a STANDARD of any kind, and it simply FAILS to preserve CREATIVE INTENT.

Dovi is GARBAGE, because it is not properly enforced.

Yes, you are right in this, but if your particular set performs better in DoVi than in HDR10... :)

There is one benefit to DV over HDR on older LG panels like my C8. For whatever idiotic reason which has since been changed, HDR is limited to 700 nits on those panels. Yes, I know you can drive more than that, and many of us do, but, the tone mapping algorithm is set for a max of 700 nits. DV does not have such a limitation and I don't really know the details of why. If you measure you panel and calibrate DV to that measurement, it'll use it. Obviously this doesn't apply to C9 and above as they can do the same thing with HDR.

Hardware idiosyncrasies we TOLERATE.

Dovi is a Contract, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, if no one follows it, then it is meaningless.

My dismay is with Dovi as a regulatory standard, not with hardware. If they're going to put the sticker on a box, it has to mean something. We were sold a promise, it devolved, they've made no attempts to rectify. :sly::sly::sly:

My personal issue with Dolby Vision is that playback isn't as smooth as with a HTPC, because my devices then rely on WiFi and refresh rate matching.
I've also noticed that panning shots are a lot worse in motion with Dolby Vision than HDR10.

In their own documentation, the studio is supposed to run a final check on a consumer Oled. I guess they skimp on that too now.

There are too many devices with different Dolby Vision decoders, so who knows in which part of the chain there are issues.
Even with streaming (mostly Netflix), I get flashbanged by bright red/green full field flickers a lot with my FireTV Stick 4K.

Hi, I have just installed madVR into PotPlayer and I get this error, no idea what to do with it:

madVR reports:
- getting display mode failed

What do I do ? I get it while playing HEVC

What GPU and display device?
Is it HDR HEVC or also happens with SDR HEVC? If HDR maybe it's from when it's trying to use the proprietary GPU API to switch to HDR mode.

In short, get a used 1060 6GB with a TV and you are done. Take a look at the link in my signature to see what settings it can handle with different content.Thank you!

In addition to the htpc, I installed JRiver + madvr on the notebook for the various experiments.

When madvr crashes on the notebook, it saves me a text file on the desktop with the crash data while on the htpc this doesn't happen: is there any setting to tell where to save the craash file?

Any plans for a Madvr stream port? Web browser wieving is the most used now days and it's not that good in all cases.

Any plans for a Madvr stream port? Web browser wieving is the most used now days and it's not that good in all cases.

What exactly is not that good in all cases? What do you want to improve?

There is no way to do that as you need support from the player/app for madVR to work right.
There would be too many problems if madVR silently replaced the browser's video renderer (not sure that would even be possible).

madshi would probably now tell you to buy an Envy to benefit from madVR with all apps/sources.

both madvr and lav are not built with stream support in mind

go with mpv+youtube-dl for that

mpv have good advance option for stream like cache and quality control

or you do the same with madVR using youtube-dl because youtube-dl is doing the work here.

I use Zoom Player to watch YouTube rendered by madVR, it works great (it also uses youtube-dl).

Videos lower than 25Mbit/s Average isn't worth watching.

No thanks. :D

So you watch based on tech and not content? Good luck with that.

In addition to the htpc, I installed JRiver + madvr on the notebook for the various experiments.

When madvr crashes on the notebook, it saves me a text file on the desktop with the crash data while on the htpc this doesn't happen: is there any setting to tell where to save the craash file?

With ctrl + c I copied the crash you see in the txt file attachment: someone can tell me why madvr often crashes me?

Thank you

anyone had a green tint on new releases? i'm experiencing a very strange color malfunction on newer releases, the old ones work fine. i've tried updating geforce but no luck. this is with all players so it's not only madvr that fails to play them correctly

You're probably trying to play a Dolby Vision file. I'll be interested for a workaround for this if possible.

In short, get a used 1060 6GB with a TV and you are done. Take a look at the link in my signature to see what settings it can handle with different content.
Ended up getting a RTX 3070 as a gift, of all things!

I will still look at your settings, as I guess there will be totally conservative, considering that they are supposed to run on a 1060 and, apparently, the 3070 is the best Nvidia card to date, as far as performance/energy used is concerned (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-founders-edition/36.html).

Hello everyone,

I bought recently an ASUS TUF GTX 1650 Super VGA and now I'm experimenting with madVR settings. I have read the relevant guides and seen "general good settings", but I would like to use madVR with the best and safest settings according to my VGA with MPC-HC.

I would like to watch 1080p and sometimes 2160p content on my monitor, which is a DELL S2721DS (1440p, 75Hz, IPS).

And when I play a video with the default settings, I always get some presentation glitches. Is this normal?

What is your opinion?

Thank you!

Enable VSync in NVIDIA settings.
In madVR set "frames to present in advance" to 1.

For watching YouTube with madVR I have been using this which works great with MPC-HC or other DirectShow players.

Also there has been some work on using madVR with HDMI input cards.

Enable VSync in NVIDIA settings. Is that still recommended with newer drivers? See: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5159/~/v-sync-off-not-recommended-as-a-global-setting-starting-with-driver-version
Maybe just do the change in the application-specific settings page and not as a global setting. Also there has been some work on using madVR with HDMI input cards.Note that this specific usage is expressly forbidden by the newer license distributed with madVR: (i) directly or indirectly use the Software in any way with external or
internal video capture devices or cards of any kind, and/or to receive or process incoming video from or in conjunction with any
professional or consumer electronic devices, and/or with any devices with one or more HDMI outputs..so I would recommend everyone to preciously keep your old archives of madVR releases (0.92.17 and the test builds before 114) before that new license was included, as you can only legally use that setup with such an older distribution archive (if you download them now, the new license is included).
(I doubt madVR labs would legally sue individuals, but still...)

Incidentally both of you agree, because clsid suggest to enable it, and the article suggest that disabling it is bad. :)

What I meant was that NVIDIA recommends leaving it at default (app-controlled).
My advice of making sure to force it to On only in the player app-specific page and not global settings is so it doesn't impact something else in Windows. ;)

Yes this is correct, no player so far seems to be able to play them without showing incorrect colors

I'm getting an access violation at address $4a500782 in module madVR64.ax. Read of address $0 when trying to use SmoothMotion.

madVR 0.92.17 beta 113 (I think, I don't see any indication of the beta number... it was one of the last non expiring ones).

It does it always with both MPC-HC and Kodi DS Player.

So what's the latest version that works with it and still doesn't expire? My family uses my HTPC, not just me. I can't have them deal with videos not playing because the video renderer has expired :-(

I wonder if I wouldn't be better off staying with the last stable version. I thought about updating madVR in order to better tonemap HDR1000 and, most of all, HDR4000 stuff on my LG C1.

Anything 113 or prior in the betas don't expire. But because of license changes, madshi removed all prior betas so you will not find them. If 113 doesn't work for you then you either need to live with the betas and keep them up to date (with their limitations) or stick to the latest stable version. There's really not many other choices.

SirMaster

madshi said he would re-upload any beta version people ask for.

113 is hosted because someone asked him to re-upload.

Nobody asked him for 112b.

SamuriHL

I know he said that a while back. It gets more complicated when there's the time limit involved. E.g. people requested a new updated time limit version of 128 but so far that's not happened. 112b shouldn't have that issue given the lack of time limit but it'd be interesting to see if he'd post it given the lack of time limit in that build.

the Intel Iris Xe DG1 upcoming cards are looking interesting for passive builds, something to keep an eye on going forward to see how these perform in MADVR.

you watched the video and noticed that they only work in a very limited number of boards?

this one is practically just an iGPU so it would work the same as an intel iGPU.
the real different cards come later this year.
