The focus bug (for dual screen PCs) has always been there for me. It doesn't happen a lot, but I can definitely remember it happening w/ every version I've used.
It just happened a minute ago and I captured the screen to show you what happens. Steps that made it happen:
[Firefox minimized at this point]
1) Start playing a mkv file on monitor 1 (windowed mode).
2) Drag the mpc-hc window to monitor 2.
3) Double click the video to go to exclusive mode on monitor 2.
4) Click the Firefox icon on the Taskbar to restore the Firefox window back to maximized mode.
[Focus bug occurs; that's when I took the screenshot]
To make Firefox clickable again, I have to make MPC-HC go to windowed mode and then back to exclusive.
If I'm not mistaken, it didn't only happen w/ Firefox. also w/ regular explorer.exe folder windows.
It seems madVR confuses DWM somehow when it goes to exclusive mode.

(screenshot of both monitors at the same time; as you can see, the Firefox window is partially translucent and unclickable)

@Superb

Does that still happen if you disable hardware acceleration in Firefox?

00012657 Render fullscreen windowed mode, covered by some windows
00012658 Render madVR window [madVR] "madVR" {0,0,1920,1200}
00012659 Render covered by explorer.exe window [EdgeUiInputWndClass] {0,1185,15,1200}
00012661 Render covered by explorer.exe window [EdgeUiInputWndClass] {0,100,1,1100}
00012662 Render covered by explorer.exe window [ImmersiveLauncher] "Start menu" {0,0,1920,1200}
00012663 Render covered by explorer.exe window [Snapped Desktop] "Desktop" {0,0,1920,1200}
Not sure what all those explorer windows are, but they seem to cover the madVR rendering window. That's the reason why madVR doesn't switch to exclusive mode.

Those are all part of Windows 8's new UI. ImmersiveLauncher is the new metro start screen, the SnappedDesktop is the ordinary desktop and EdgeUi is for the swipe gestures and stuff around the edges.

I just dropped in to thank you for your hard work while I'm slowly catching up on this massive thread :)

Perhaps useful for madshi to know that it's Windows 8 before reporting a bug?

madVR reports:
-creating Direct3D device failed (80004001)

This happen every time MPC is minimized and it need to play the next video

Start a video->minimize the player-> jump to next video by "playlist" or "play next in folder"-> black screen with madVR reports: -creating Direct3D device failed (80004001).

This is a bug that have occurred for all the version so far I have tried, which is +.47.

Alright. Have some else that might be related to the focus bug. I can see that the effect on the window decorations are not fading away (even though the mouse isn't on them).

NOTE: While saving the screenshot, Paint.NET also became half translucent and unclickable (until I switched madVR to windowed mode). The "Saving..." dialog was stuck on the screen until the change.
Could it maybe be that madVR is using so much GPU RAM which causes DWM to run out of (for its own needs)? :) I could try and decreases the queues sizes...

Hmmmmm... That's weird. Can I have a log file that shows the problematic situation?
Log with 0.79:
http://www.mediafire.com/?85urov0l5k7bhk9

Reproducible steps:
My LCD is at 60Hz, then I open the file in MPC-HC in window mode. It starts playing automatically.
I pause it, then double-click to go fullscreen. It changes to 24Hz. I should see the same frame as when paused, but no, just blank and I don't see your fancy blue seek bar, instead I see the normal MPC-HC seek bar (weird).
Then I unpause and I hear sound but no picture. I have to right-click for the image to appear playing.
Then, about 2 seconds later the refresh rate changes back to 60Hz. I exited MPC-HC.

Dextrosan reported the same thing. and MPC-HTPC reported something similar.

I go back to 0.78 and everything is fine, as always was.
Here is the log, doing the same steps, but with 0.78: http://www.mediafire.com/?tmbb3gnc8uaq9i4

Let me know if you need more tests.

It seems that madVR is not able to detect the display refresh rate, for whatever funny reason. Which GPU are you using with which refresh rate? I'd suggest trying to reinstall the GPU drivers.

Before posting the log I did a clean install of the latest Nvidia-Drivers 285.58. After reading your suggestion I once again uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia-Drivers.
But nothing changed. Sometimes madVR is working, sometimes I have a black screen.

My GPU is a Nvidia ION (first generation) and I tried running on 24Hz and 60Hz.

I've experienced this and the problem with the semi-transparent windows when minimizing/maximizing ... and also some windows not showing up at all until I exit the player or force madVR out of exclusive mode.
It doesn't happen every time but it's pretty often.
madshi,
do you think a log file could help you in this situation?

Are there plans to add support for XBMC ever? I use and love madVR with PotPlayer on my desktop, but my HTPC lacks it.

No I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

XBMC isn't a directshow player afaik.

I use XBMC as my media manager and I love it. I however have it invoke MPC-HC/LAV/madVR for all playback. It works great.

@Boltron: I'm on Linux, and I don't believe any of the supported players are compatible.

@lanzorg:
Depending on your source material and madVR settings, you should be able to get it "working" just fine. Just try it and report back, it's always good to know which setups work.

Those are all part of Windows 8's new UI. ImmersiveLauncher is the new metro start screen, the SnappedDesktop is the ordinary desktop and EdgeUi is for the swipe gestures and stuff around the edges.

Yeah...

[EdgeUiInputWndClass] {0,1185,15,1200}
is the hot-corner of the screen (lower left) that makes the worthless neutered "Start menu" pop up.

[EdgeUiInputWndClass] {0,100,1,1100}
Is the left-edge that triggers jumps between apps.

And the other two are probably the full screen Metro interface "Start Menu" and the Windows 7-esque "Desktop" running on top of it.

What's interesting is they weren't always an issue at all, but only in the last few weeks has fullscreen exclusive mode stopped working. Might have been a change in Windows, though.

My current laptop is up on lease is will be replaced with Intel Core i5-2540M and Intel HD Graphics 3000. I haven't seen any benchmarks on what performance to expect with this processor and graphics using madVR. Any thoughts?

Here's a log for a crash I'm having with multiple monitors and a DVD-Image source. Occurs when video is playing or paused, when I move MPC-HC to another (any)display(I have 4).

Don't expect 1080i50 to play smoothly with deinterlacing and lanczos4 scaling.

I tested it before (v0.59) and it didn't work (black screen, no sound).
If someone have this GPU AMD Radeon HD 6470M, can tell me if it works well with madVR.

I am for the first time trying to IVTC a .TS file (60fps). Now ive intalled Dscaler 5.0.0.8 and replaced the 2 .dll's that need replacing. I had to turn off DEP to access the settings, but whatever settings i use, i cant get the 60fps video to decimate to 24p (i am using madVR btw). MediaInfo tells me the file is Progressive, but i dont think it is (or was). Anyway im supposed to IVTC this .TS file to 24p right?

Info from the .TS file:
Video
ID : 547 (0x223)
Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
Format : MPEG Video
Format_Commercial_IfAny : HDV 720p
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@High
Format settings, BVOP : Yes
Format settings, Matrix : Custom
Codec ID : 2
Duration : 43mn 59s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 16.1 Mbps
Maximum bit rate : 18.0 Mbps
Width : 1 280 pixels
Height : 720 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 59.940 fps
Standard : Component
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.292
Stream size : 4.96 GiB (93%)
Color primaries : BT.709
Transfer characteristics : BT.709
Matrix coefficients : BT.709

Is there something im missing, is this file not able to be IVTC'd? Im really wanting this to work as i hear great things about the Dscaler 5 IVTC mod.

PS. the file doesnt play as 60 fps, more like 24fps, totally unsmooth (but ReClock and MPC-HC reports 60fps).

Btw. i do not use ffdshow with the dscaler ivtc mod, i cant figure out how, but this isnt the way to get it working anyway, right? Just having a hard time getting all the info needed to set this up right. Hopefully any of you can help :)!

[...]long mediainfo log with a potential 720p60 file that could as well be all OK, cause 720p60 is a valid reso with valid framerate[...]

I'm not sure, but this question seems to be in the wrong thread. What's it got to do with madVR exactly ? MadVR is no tool like ffdshow, dscaler, AviSynth or what not it's a renderer. AFAIK IVTC is done before the renderer stage.

Fair enough, but i saw some guys talk about this in this thread, and i was under the impression that maybe there are some specific madvr related settings for this IVTC to work.

After more testing I've settled on using 24 CPU & 12 GPU queues. I've confirmed that keeping the CPU queue always above the GPU queue does reduce the number of dropped frames rather significantly in worse-case scenarios.

Raising the GPU queue significantly seems useless->harmful. Useless because the GPU queue dropping by 1-2 no matter what you set it to still has a high chance of causing delayed or dropped frames on my system. Harmful because when the CPU queue drops below the GPU queue max, the GPU queue follows, and as stated above dropping only 1-2 puts me at risk for dropped/delayed frames.

madshi, I've also noticed a potential bug in the GPU queues. With 24CPU/8GPU, if the Decoder Queue drops significantly 23-24/24 -> 11-24/24 the Upload and Render Queues have a tendency to drop a bit as well 7-8/8 -> 5-8/8 or lower causing delayed/dropped frames, even though and the GPU isn't stressed and has plenty of data to keep the queues full. By the same measure with 8CPU/8GPU, a drop of the Decoder Queue 7-8/8 -> 4-8/8 causes the Upload and Render Queues to drop at the same rate. Though in that case it's to be expected since the GPU Queues don't have enough data from the Decoder Queue to keep them full.

Anything you can do to increase the resiliency of the GPU queues? Theoretically the Upload queue should always be full as long as the Decoder queue is higher, but that isn't happening for some reason. Does it have something to do with how you are syncing the queues? I'm thinking that re-tweaking thread priorities so the uploads queue has a higher priority than the decoder queue may help? With madVR now offering the ability to set the Decoder queues extremely high, it seems to have become more important to prioritize the GPU queues and just let the Decoder queue fluctuate as needed, while not affecting anything.

Try untick "use a separate device for presentation" under rendering-> general settings in madVR settings.

With this update, now my queues do not fill-up, thus I drop frames (unless I drop the scaling Algorithm to something low, like Bilinear.) I went back and forth between .78 and .79 multiple times and am confident that I can only get .78 to work.

What happens if you set both queues to 8 in the madVR settings? Does that make 0.79 behave like 0.78 for you?

No, unfortunately I continually drop frames regardless of the queues in .79. There are so many permutations (each option increases the test case exponentially) that I have spent hours on this, but I have tried running in seperate threads, multiple flush options, different scaling algorithms, feeding different signals from different filters, etc...Since your post I focused on having 8 frames in advance (or backbuffers with that option disabled) and no matter what I try I simply drop frames on a second-by-second basis (where .78 allows me to run SoftCubic/4-Tap Spline in fullscreen exclusive without any frame-drop.)

This even happens when I am not de-interlacing! However, it is a shame, because when carefully setup, I like your De-Interlacer even more than YADIF on interlaced sources. :(

Again, the problem seems to be my GPU-RAM (256 MB) ...GPU-Z never shows the load to go above 50% or so (and I use software decoding so that is not an issue.) Since your change-log indicates that this should run better with my limited GPU-Ram, I am quite shocked that I am having more problems with this release.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information/debug files/etc to help. I just don't want to overwhelm you [and everyone else] with miles of logs from so many different permutations.

Thanks much!
MikeY

The render and present queues for me are a bit of an issue, I have mine starting off pretty high then after 10 seconds or so it drops right down. I'm nearly always running around 3-4/12 or less on my 550 Ti i7 system regardless of the decoder, player, CPU availability and GPU clock settings (I've disabled PowerMizer with no effect.) Anyone else have a particularly low render and present queues running an Nvidia card? I'm hoping 0.80 helps a little with the odd frame drop I'm getting, guess we'll see!

so I'm playing around w/ the queue settings:
-on non-CUVID stuff, mVR reports higher GPU RAM usage(216MB) than GPU-Z(158MB)
-on CUVID, it's the other way around...209MB in mVR, 269 in GPU-Z

I've got a 384MB 8800GS G92, so who should I trust?

Is there any point in filling the GPU RAM with cache? I guess not?

And is there any point in maxing out the CPU queue size? any ill effect such as increased CPU load? I've got it maxed out atm, and seeking seems snappier...maybe my imagination, though :o

:thanks:

Yeah I really don't understand the gpu usage vs how much madVR states is actually there. And the automatic queue sizes just don't add up either.

Is that a new problem with the latest madVR version? And madVR does not recover after a couple of seconds?

Don't know if it's new. madVR recovers when switching between multiple desktops, but not when enabling/disabling desktops. The whole screen flickers when you do this, so I assume dwm.exe or perhaps the video driver is being restarted. Resuming from sleep causes the same issue.

The first thread is Microsoft's Navigator...from Windows XP. The second link is a directshow wrapper to the open source libdvdnav navigation filter bwing developed by cb2000. It's not perfect but I find that it works better in some ways as compared to the Windows XP navigation filter...however it is less stable than Windows XP's filter.

extract test.zip anywhere (doesn't have to be madVR folder) to a folder and then go into the win32 folder and run DVDNavigatorPathHack.exe then point it to dslibdvdnav.ax and then click "Hack" and close it. Now try the dvd.

You don't need any of that for DVD playback. Just use ffdshow for video decoding, and in its configuration, enable the "DVD Decoding" option for MPEG2 in the codecs section.

Some other filters may cause macrovision errors too, so you may have to selectively disable them until it works.
My filter list is LAV Filters, ffdshow video decoder (only applies to DVDs) and ffdshow audio processor. (downmixes audio for headphones)

Many of the things listed in that guide are either redundant, or detrimental.

All 4:2:2, 4:4:4, and in most cases, all RGB formats should be disabled in ffdshow/LAV Video decoder's output options. (madVR needs the raw 4:2:0 data to work best)

Just make sure that ffdshow is lower priority than LAV Video decoder, it should only be loaded with DVDs.

I would recommend to not disable anything in LAV Video, it will always pick the best format for the file you're playing.

I should probably finish dvd playback, so we can remove ffdshow video from the equation.

Try running uninstall.bat, and then install.bat in your madVR folder and see if that helps. Not sure if I also reset all settings. Fixed it for me.
