4000 is the original HDR spec the signal allows 10000.
How important would you say the Maximum Frame-Average Light reported by MediaInfo on HDR videos is? How does it compare in importance to peak brightness?
Also, what is Chroma subsampling Type 2 (4:2:0) as opposed to I guess Type 1, or whatever the default is when type is not specified?

irrelevant every TV monitor or PJ will do frame by frame tonemapping anyway. and that is done by measuring each frame individual.

type 2 is uhd chroma (i usually don't use the type information but top left tl or UHD) madVR can't handle this information and will do it always wrong with everything that is not type 0 center left or mpeg2/mpeg4 which should be used if the information is missing and what madVR will always use no matter what and that is was the far majority of information files is.
this is one of the topics i'm to stupid to actually understand no matter how many papers i read.
mpeg 2 Chroma needs to be moved to the left to match luma but no matter how many paper i read i see that it needs to be moved to the left: https://www.poynton.ca/PDFs/Chroma_subsampling_notation.pdf
i'm wrong incapable to learn. don't be me be better.

Any solution for the upgrade nag I've started getting? I don't see any newer builds out there that would stop it.

only a new build, we know he is working on one, or is about to, he's been busy with other stuff, he'll get one out before its disabled.

[deleted - wrong thread]
I decided to drop the 2160p23 from display modes as for some reason 23.976 gives me wonky movement unlike 24 even when the source is 23.976, go and figure...
I managed to fix this by changing VSync from regular to adaptive mode. Might be just a placebo, but seems smoother now than even the working display modes were. What was wrong before was almost epilepsy inducing frame skipping. Has no one else here on NVidia and Win 11 not had to do this?
i run win 11 with all the bad stuff so default and it is perfect i was actively trying to break eh system and nothing i had more problem on win 10... or my other win 11 system where everything is broken.
Well there seems to be a glitch where it first decides the composition rate should be 23.000Hz, before changing it to 23.977 only after alt+tabbing. Fun.
well i will never have that problem to be fair by using 119 for 23p
why kaspersky detect trojan with new madvr 208

false positive anti virus software is literally the virus these days.
this happens quite a lot in the past years with mpc-be.
"new madvr 208"? It was released about 3 months ago.
and 3 month later it is supposed to be a virus just no...

...and there's yet more to report. It can apparently also change back to 23.000Hz, without even alt+tabbing, just pausing. Yeah, I really did fix this display mode.

This sounds to me like there is something in the background grabbing focus? I think madshi has already suggested this might be happening and is looking into it.
the composition rate is the desktop "refreshrate".
could be something simple like actually asking for 23p which was an alias for 24000/1001 and is now taken literally. which is not done anymore so removing display modes could fix it. tabbing in and out may actual refresh it and fixes it in the process. true FSE has no composition rate.
the bit deep think has something todo with focus this issue shouldn't but not like i can actually read that code.

Alright, thank you for the feedback. The final conclusion is that it will even change back on the fly, without me even pausing or anything. I will continue using display modes as everything works well enough with the even numbers (24,25,30,50,60), at least well enough to not go back to manually changing the refresh rate every damn time before and after watching a video.

Well, it turns out I was wrong. I suddenly reached a point where I no longer feel it is worth it for me, making this not-annoyingly-glitchy on Win 11 is beyond my capabilities/patience.
What would be the best forum for MPC-HC/-VR discussion, one that is actually relatively active?

Thank you! I have somehow completely missed MPC-BE. Seems like it could possibly be better than HC although they seem very similar, would it be worth it to make the change and redo all the settings?

You don't have to change anything, you can have both installed at the same time and both allow you to select the renderers you want to use.
Try their renderer out first. The madvr settings are kept in the windows registry & madvr directory so they won't change from what you already set, so if you want to reset those settings you have to run the restore default settings script in the madvr directory.

Changing player won't help with issues that are specific to MadVR.
But you should try resetting MadVR to defaults. First make it work stable with completely default settings. Then adjust step by step to improve quality.

No, I was just thinking if I should change to BE for use with MPCVR. clsid, you are the one who's taken the reins over HC right? Is it outdated information that BE has more advanced features/better support for the most modern file types, purely based on comparing it to the state the original developer left it at back in 2017?
Sunspark

You can have both installed at the same time. See how it is.
the mpc-be thread is the defacto thread for mpc-VR.
and about feature... it really doesn't matter for video renderer support.
for video file type support mpc-hc uses lavfilter which is in active development. mpc-hc isn't going anywhere.
other feature yeah good luck... mpc-hc has libass support mpc-be doesn't.
mpc-be supports a internal web page parser mpc-hc doesn't.
you can now go on like that... at best you make some devs angry and at worst you start a flame war with some elitist user like me.
what so ever the madVR thread is not the place.

MPC-HC has better internal filters than BE.
MPC-HC has much better subtitle renderer than BE.
MPC-HC has just as active development as BE. The only reason the BE changelogs much longer are due to internal filter related stuff, which is an external project in case of MPC-HC.

It's not true, nothing better. :)
here we go...
and because i like to throw a fuel tanker into the fire.
mpc-hc is objectively the better player it supports scaling in light skin! checkmate literally unusable.

Kind of wondered this myself and will switch if it means no more separate LAV :goodpost: One thing I do miss about BE is the audio track / subtitle language access via user interface icon. Oh also, is there any difference between SaneAR and MPC Audio Renderer?

A new customizable toolbar might be coming later this year.
But tracks can easily be accessed through right-click menu, or LAV Splitter tray icon if you enable that. You can also define advanced track selection rules in the splitter settings to have the correct ones be selected automatically.
The audio renderers are very similar, two different implementations of a WASAPI renderer. Just try either one and unless you have issues, no reason to switch.

I need the Custom channel mapping present in mpc-hc Audio Switcher. (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=2017560#post2017560)
This way, whether mpc-hc decodes a correct EAC3/m4a/flac 5.1.2 or an fake AAC/Opus 7.1 with inverted 5.1.2 channels (BL-BR contain FHL-FHR), the result will be the desired one: hearing the top channels through the fake back channels.
the insanely powerful ffmpeg sound processor in mpc-be should be able to do that and much more.
hrtf sound mixing is maybe something i have to investigate.

You can only use the "compand" filter. (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1957178#post1957178)
ohhh that's disappointing.

Hey guys, I use HDR movie file to tone map it using pixel shaders and watch it in SDR. My problem is that the display peak luminance (nits) setting in MadVR is not working correctly. I have to enter the lowest value (20) to get a normal looking image, when I enter the real nits value of my display ( 400 nits ) it is super dark. Having to enter 20 nits when my display is 400 nits just feels wrong. What could be wrong with my settings?

i've had to suspend my use of MADVR for now for 2d stuff, I just cant beat those frame drops, too many too ignore. I actually get them with stock KODI as well but is odd to be sure, thankfully MPC renderer is totally clean of any issues so i'm using this for all my 2D playback at the moment with the addition of a bit of sharpening to make it look a bit more like MADVR :)
unless there is anything else I can try, I have currently tried:
FSE on and off with a combination of other items listed below on and off as well.
Exclusive mode Flush and wait (sleep) for all but after intermedia render steps
Exclusive mode, tried 1 frame and 8 frames
HAGS disabled
roll back to AMD driver 2.5.1.1 (fixes 3d MVC frame drops for me)
Dithering set to ordered dithering on all profiles
delayed playback until queue full, ticked with seeking ticked
Anything else I have forgotten / can try?

You don't have to use Windows 11. I read the other day that the delay in the Start button is because it's now written as a React Native application. You could create a 64 GB partition on your drive and install Windows 10 in it so you have more options.
You could play around with mpc-qt and see how it does with your stuff. It's libmpv with the hc-style interface. I don't use it but I have tested it on Linux, it does have a Windows binary.

Even this is not possible, not to mention actually making use of the options that make madVR worth it in the first place. The only solution really seems to be Win 10, as (possibly?) hinted at in the previous post. The case may be that the environment within which I tried to make it work is somehow so messed up that it is completely my own fault, but I'm glad that at least MPCVR doesn't give a f**k and throws zero errors at me even if that's true. Not to piss on madVR of course, it's an impressive piece of software, and free at that, in any event.

I think that is the main difference. Been using MPC Audio Renderer for years after SaneAR died.

Both have automatic pitch correction. So that isn't a difference.
I'm not sure what happened, but when I reverted back to last official release of madVR it no longer switches to HDR. It just stays on HDR. I tried a few things with graphics card, mpc player and looking in madVR, but nothing has caused it to read as HDR anymore so I'm not sure what's up. This is when I noticed it at least is when I reverted back to this version of madVR.
device page bug it may thinks the device can't do HDR. that is fixed in one of the beta version.

all with the fix are timed if i remember correctly.

Just curious if anyone knows if there is an end game with the test builds? Is there a non-expiring final build planned at any point? What is the final goal? Again, just curious...

There will never be a final permanent build. In fact it could all end one day with no more madVR builds at all, so best to install mpv, set it up and have it ready just in case. I'd recommend this build.

You won't get an answer any time soon, maybe in five years or something he might release a bug fix final build with whatever slight alerations his partners allow to be added but I expected that a year or two ago.
A sad state of affairs really.
