what happens when you tick off "enable gamma processing"?
Nothing. The real question is what happens if you tick it *on*. In that case madVR will eventually modify the video gamma curve, depending on which gamma processing settings you choose.

When did madvr start working properly with DVDs anyhow? I know someone came up with that hack job, but why is it working now, did something change?
I'm not aware of anything having changed. madVR now accepts a couple more FourCC connection types, maybe that helped. But as far as I know, the general problem is still there.

madshi, the old problem of subtitle disappeared when paused came back.
Should be fixed again in the next build.

I would love to see "black level"/"White Level" control in madVR.
Yeah, on my to do list.

I am not sure where to ask this, but I have a problem playing m2ts files.

The videos play in at least double speed and same with the sound.
Does it also occur with other renderers? If so, it can't be madVR's fault.

I just completed a calibration of my LCD TV and entered my measured primaries and grayscale numbers in the yCMS page. All appears to be working well but I have a question, should I check "enable gamma processing" on the color&gamma page or leave it unchecked?
Depends on whether you want to have the capability of changing the video gamma curve or not. It's an additional control, like brightness or contrast.

Do you plan to add a sharpen filter to madVR ?
Probably, sooner or later. But not too soon.

we need custom shaders support
Yeah, sooner or later.

it would be great if you move the scaling algorithms page under the display devices so we can select diffrent scaling algorithms for diffrent displays.
Well, that might be useful in some situations, but it would also come with usability disadvantages, IMHO. I have a different solution in mind for situations like yours. But it will take a while before I get to that...

I have been a long time user of madVR but on XP where I had no issues of stuttering or dropped frames even without using the exclusive fullscreen rendering mode. Now I have migrated to Windows7 and even with exclusive rendering mode I still have some stuttering and juttering on scenes with fast panning motion and such like that.
What does the madVR OSD say? Does it list frame drops, delays and/or glitches? Are the queues always full? If not, which queues are at which value?

Make sure you have antialiasing, anisotropic filtering etc set to either "disabled" or "application preference".

I didn't read up on all the latest posts, but are these problems confirmed for 0.66:
- when skipping forward frame-by-frame in MPC-HC, after a few frames you can see jumping back and forward (window mode)
- sometimes there's some strange orange "ghosting" from a frame back in time when starting after a pause (forgot the term)
The second problem might be fixed in the next build. Not seeing the first problem here.

I thought this would solve my problems with uncompressed Fraps files, but it didn't. I still can't play my recordings with madVR. Could you somehow improve this or is there a workaround with MPC-HC? I don't want to switch between my standart windows player (because its crap).

MediaInfo says:
Format : Fraps
Codec ID : FPS1
That doesn't look like uncompressed to me? Can you upload a small sample file?

Not sure if this is a MadVR issue or something else in the chain (My setup is a little esoteric). I updated everything from MadVR to ffdshow, to ReClock to MPC-HC and Lav CUVID. I began to see weird artefacts like I would get everything turn into lots of horizontal rectangles and lines either at the top of the screen or in the middle that would not go away until I replayed the videos. Then it would do it again.

Anyone else getting this on latest builds of stuff? I will have to test back with some earlier builds on this. I am hoping it's a software issue and not hardware. I did run Furmark on my video card (OC'd GTX560) and it did not give any issues like crashing or corruption. But who knows. I tried going back to stock clocking and it's still acting twitchy.
Doesn't really sound like a madVR software problem to me. Haven't ever seen anything like that, nor heard of anybody else having such a problem.

1) What means : run presentation in a separate thread? Must I turn on or turn off?
2) What means limit rendering times to avoid glitches? Must I turn on or turn off?
3) What means overshoot max frame latency? Must I turn on or turn off?
These are all hacks and tricks to reduce "presentation glitches". If your playback is fine and you don't have any "presentation glitches" (see madVR OSD) then these options should be kept turned off. If you have presentation glitches, try these options. It doesn't really matter what they do. Their only purpose is to reduce the presentation glitches.

MadVR exclusive mode for standard definition media. I have 0.66 installed and it works great and goes into exclusive mode for HD content, but SD 720x304 for instance does not go to exclusive. Is there some restriction on when exclusive mode can be used?
There is no specific restriction like that in madVR. Which media player are you using?

Here's a log for the first problem:

madshi, while trying to get that error occur as early as possible I've stumbled upon another error.
.M2TS files can't be opened with JanWillem32's build of MPC-HC. The log is really short because the player crashes on opening.

I've tried to get that log, but I failed. Can't read russian and the download link was not obvious to me.

madshi, at last I was able to deliberately reproduce the freezing issue. Here's the log. http://rghost.ru/14245981
How it went:
1) Opened video file at the start in windowed mode.
2) Waited ~1 second.
3) Switched to fullscreen with automatic exclusive fullscreen on. Video got stuck at once.
4) Waited ~5 seconds and closed the player with alt+F4.
I can see where it might go wrong. I'll put this on my to do list to improve/fix in a future version.

But do you have to use the option "run presentation in a separate thread"? Without it maybe the problem wouldn't occur.

The crash seems to occur when madVR tries to get information about video/audio/subtitle tracks from the source filter or splitter. Which splitter are you using? I'd guess it's buggy. Try a different splitter...

I think I have a display mode changer problem again: Log (http://www.mediafire.com/?pn1k83rrl5ndenb)
madVR correctly switched to 1080i29 when the playback starts but it switches to 1080i25 when it goes into fullscreen mode (this mode is not even listed in my settings).
Can you reproduce that? From the log it appears as if madVR itself always requests 1080i29. The log doesn't mention 1080i25 or anything similar.

madshi, did you have any comment on why madVR is producing a green screen with anything but YV12 input/output from VSFilter?

Even if I force GPU clocks ,The values still increase after Win+L, but EVR-CP doesn't has this problem.
Hmmmm... I can see that the rendering gets stuck somewhere, but I don't see where exactly. Would you (or anyone else who can reproduce the frame dropping after Win+L) be willing to create some logs with a special test build?

I hope it's not too big: madvr - log.txt (http://www.sendspace.com/file/nq7bne)(7,6 mb)
I don't understand how people can not zip text files for upload!?

Anyway. From your log I can see that the first 8 seconds of playback seem to work just fine. Then playback is paused for about 50 seconds, with no log information worth nothing during that time. Then comes a time of about 70 seconds in which madVR fails to read out the current display mode, and the paused frame is constantly rerendered and presented. After that there are another 70 seconds of paused state with no rendering activity.

Now which phase in the log is which? I can't really tell...

Have to report a playback problem with Vista x86 "Ms Mpeg4 v3 DMO" decoder with video turned upsidedown on madVR 0.66.

Some samples i uploaded if someone wants to confirm.

That's really weird. It seems that Haali's Video Renderer uses a negative image height to convince the decoder to transport the image correctly. But the Microsoft documentation clearly says:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd318229%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

For uncompressed RGB bitmaps, if biHeight is positive, the bitmap is a bottom-up DIB with the origin at the lower left corner. If biHeight is negative, the bitmap is a top-down DIB with the origin at the upper left corner.

For YUV bitmaps, the bitmap is always top-down, regardless of the sign of biHeight.
The decoder outputs YUY2, which is a YUV bitmap. So it should be top-down, according to the MS documentation. But the decoder sends the image upside-down.

As far as I can see, this is a bug in the decoder and not in madVR.

But do you have to use the option "run presentation in a separate thread"? Without it maybe the problem wouldn't occur.Without this option enabled this problem's gone.
The crash seems to occur when madVR tries to get information about video/audio/subtitle tracks from the source filter or splitter. Which splitter are you using? I'd guess it's buggy. Try a different splitter...
You were right, it works ok with internal MPEG or Haali splitter. I'm using my fav. splitter which is called AVSplitter. I'll report this uncompatibility to the developer. Can you tell me which portion of the log told you about the cause of the crash, please?

madshi

If I set ffdshow video decoder to output RGB32 and it passes through vsfilter, vsfilter seems to want to convert the rgb32 to "yv12" but what ends up is just a green screen for video.
Ok, it seems that madVR requests vsfilter to switch to YV12 because that's the first format vsfilter has in its list of supported output formats. I'll fix that in the next build, not requesting a format change, any longer.

The very last line of the log was directly before madVR tried to contact the splitter. You can tell the AVSplitter developer that there seems to be some kind of problem with the madVR <-> AVSplitter communication via the "IAMStreamSelect" interface. I guess that AVSplitter's "IAMStreamSelect" implementation is buggy. At least madVR's "IAMStreamSelect" implementation works with every other splitter I've tested.

It is able to take screenshots of D3D fullscreem applications much like Fraps. It does its job for D3DFS in EVR CP, however in madVR's exclusive mode it doesn't work. Screenshots are supposed to save as files on desktop and it works this way in madVR windowed mode or any other renderer. But not with madVR exclusive FS mode.

Don't know why screenshotting works with other D3DFS applications but not with madVR. Anyway, screenshotting is on my to do list, but it's not a priority right now.

The subtitle problem is caused by the same bug which causes the higher CPU load in paused state. Both problems should be fixed in the next build.

What does the madVR OSD say? Does it list frame drops, delays and/or glitches? Are the queues always full? If not, which queues are at which value?

Hi Madshi,
I am very interesting into your comment here.
How can we adjust the various settings of MadVr depending on the OSD report? Specially regarding the frame drops, delays and /or glitches.
Thanks in advance,

Well Fraps does a very small compression while recording, to save some space on your harddrive. But it's still more like uncompressed to me. I've uploaded a very short & small sample recording with audio. Because I only used black and white colors it's very small.

Link: http://puu.sh/3mhg

Lots of colors would create a 100mb file for these 5 sec of recording. Would be great if madVR would play these files.

It seems to play here without issue, unless there's a particular decoder or color space that you wanted to use for playback.

There is no specific restriction like that in madVR. Which media player are you using?

Zoomplayer 8RC2, I'm always outputing from ffdshow, (either as a decoder or raw for post processing).

There's no simple short answer for that. If you have a problem, describe it and we'll see what we can do about it.

They play fine for me, with AVI Decompressor in the chain. It doesn't look like raw uncompressed video to me. Fraps seems to use some kind of compression. madVR only accepts truely uncompressed RGB and YUV data.

Zoomplayer 8RC2, I'm always outputing from ffdshow, (either as a decoder or raw for post processing).
Make sure you have the option "Overlay covers the entire video area" checked. If that doesn't help I'll need a log.

Thoughts about best quality deinterlacing solution

Hi madshi here is link to a linux project

http://www.vdr-portal.de/board17-developer/board25-patches/78480-patch-rgb-pal-ueber-vga-mit-variabler-framerate/

It offers a driver patch to synchronize interlaced frames for a interlaced display so there is no need to deinterlace at all.

So if your Display have a interlaced Resolution available this would give the best picture quality.

Would it be possible to implement such a patch in madVR ?

Somebody knows a similar windows solution ?

Thanks for reading

That's an interesting project, but it's not for Windows. Furthermore, today's GPUs are doing pretty good deinterlacing via hardware. I think image quality is probably better if you use GPU hardware deinterlacing than if you output interlaced and let the display deinterlace.

are you shure the display needs to deinterlace ?
i thought the display only shows the native half-pictures (cause best quality) and your brain deinterlace it.

Every digital display (LCD, Plasma, DLP etc) is progressive by nature. If your PC doesn't deinterlace, then the display has to. Digital displays are not really capable of showing interlaced content. The only exceptions are old CRT monitors and projectors.

I'm getting a black screen, only, too. Thought that was correct. Well, anyway, the Haali Video Renderer shows a black screen, too. So it doesn't seem to be a madVR bug. When I try to play your sample with VMR or EVR, I'm getting the following complaint:

"Unrecognized frame format. Please install the latest FRAPS version."

AM_MEDIA_TYPE* pmt = NULL;
if (FAILED(pSS->Info(i, &pmt, &dwFlags, &lcid, &dwGroup, &pszName, NULL, NULL))) {
return;
}
if (pmt) {

Hmmm... I disagree with Void here. Just look at the documentation:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd319796%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

The documentation for the "ppmt" parameter does *not* say: "the method may return a pointer or it may return NULL". Instead it says: "the method returns a pointer to an AM_MEDIA_TYPE structure". There's no ifs or maybes here. The splitter has to return a valid pointer to an AM_MEDIA_TYPE structure, whether it wants to or not.

Compare that to the documentation of the "ppObject" parameter: "The method might return a pointer to a pin or filter associated with the stream, or it might return the value NULL". Clearly the splitter may return NULL for "ppObject". So that's optional for the splitter, unlike "ppmt", which is mandatory. IMHO.

First I'd like to give big thanks to madshi for giving us madVR. Second I saw somewhere in the 400+ pages of this thread that it's recommended to set anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering to "application preferred" in Nvidia or ATI control panels. Is there any other 3D setting that could get in madVR's way? I'm just being curious, after all it's working fine on my end right now but... I'd rather have it all set-up correctly.
