Just sent a little something.

Not interested!?! I use it often! For BDs and MKVs, and once in a great while MP4. I haven't had any real bugs (in a while) with it other than a funky 480i video, which I found later would have been fine had I allowed it to be IVTC'd by BD-RB. I'm a little strapped also at this time. But very, very, VERY much keenly interested in the development. This is a brilliant project. Okay, other than once in a while - when I'm just not thinking about it, I'm reminded to click on the Backup button more than once for it to start. Then I remember I should get a video of it so you can see; because obviously it hasn't happened for you - or others. But not much interests...Paaaah...Huuumph! I cannot agree that that statement, Sir!! ;-)

I plan to restart development of BD Rebuilder soon. I stopped for a while in order to concentrate on another project... and donations (which were rare anyway) pretty much dried up. So I decided a couple months ago that I would put it on hold at least until if I got an unsolicited donation (there had only been a couple this year -- and I decided people just weren't that interested anymore). "thefrog" sent me one today, so... I decided to show some gratitude...

Glad you brought this up. I thought I had donated more recently. I was wrong and had very much lost track of time.

I am having difficulty in getting a bluray with an aspect ratio of 4:3 converted to 16:9. I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what. I thought it was as simple as checking the option in the settings and making a backup. But that didn't work. Do I have to install ffdshow for this? I now have LAVFilters-0.65 installed.

There are tweaks available (like WIDE_OFFSET), but they will work at default values if you don't change them.

Why would you want to stretch a 4:3 image to 16:9? That ultimately creates "short fat people." Even worse, blow up the image and center cut it.

I think the fault lies in the source. My source has not a "real" 4:3 ratio as such. It just looks like one. It is 16:9 with black borders. I suppose I have to remove these borders first. Is there a hidden option for that? Or can anyone point me in the right direction?

What is your source really? Does your 4:3 picture look distored? What is the resolution? Upload a sample so someone can have a look.
Blu-ray has restrictions regarding SAR, DAR and resolution, and adding borders for 16:9 DAR may be mandatory.

Correct, in order to display 4:3, the pillar-bars must be added, otherwise the 1440:1080 (4:3) will get stretched to 16:9.

As I previously posted, stretching 4:3 to fit 16:9 is horrible. Anyone doing that should be dipped in tar and then feathered. :D

Why would you want to stretch a 4:3 image to 16:9? That ultimately creates "short fat people." Even worse, blow up the image and center cut it.It doesn't stretch the picture. It takes a 16:9 segment out of the source and resizes it. So you lose some of the picture above and below the 16:9 window. You'd be surprised how you don't notice the sections that are lost. Sometimes it's better when you use WIDE_OFFSET to take more from the upper part of the original.

I use this sometimes to convert old 4:3 TV shows to 16:9. I typically use WIDE_OFFSET=85 so the centering is biased (by 15%) toward the top of the picture.

When you select this feature BD-RB makes all necessary adjustments and updates the CLPI and MPLS to reflect 16:9. It also sets aspect ratio information correctly when outputting to ALTERNATE formats.

I do notice and I hate it when professionals crop 4:3 to make 16:9. It was originally 4:3, leave it as 4:3.

The stretching mentioned in the response was in regards as to what Blu-ray players do with 1440:1080 material. I originally mentioned the cropping of 4:3 material as well, a couple of my posts ago.

But, that is me.

That should probable be WIDE_OFFSET=0.85 for a 15% reduction. And for the ALTERNATE formats goes that it only works on those where vFormat=7 is active.

I notice it also. I'm very picky when it comes to visuals and someone not doing it "right". Most people I know don't see a difference with video that is 4:3 and being displayed on 16:9 or like it, like some restaurants have their TVs set to. Normally I don't watch TV when at a restaurants when I'm with someone, disrespect to conversation to me. But you get the idea if you've seen the Off-ness of that. It bugs me a lot to see that kind of funky conversion.

But, that is me.An if it had been filmed in 16:9 originally? Would you miss the sections above and below that weren't filmed? What I notice and don't like are those black areas on the left and right of my screen when I play it back in 4:3. You don't miss something that isn't there.

It's interesting how people make a random decision about something like this and decide it is a violation of the laws of nature. Funny, actually.

Huh? That doesn't make any sense. If it was shot 16:9, how can you miss anything that is above/below? How about missing more stuff on the right/left to make a 2.40:1 image? No matter how you frame it, there is always more stuff all around what is shot. Whatever resolution was used, that is how it was shot and framed.

Wow, this harks back to the old letterbox complaining days when video tapes and DVDs were released that contained letterbox bars on the top and bottom. People complained that their TV screen wasn't filled with the image. Were you one of those? If it was shot in 4:3, I want all of that 4:3 image on my screen. Pillar bars do not bother me. If letterbox bars do not bother you, why should pillar bars?

Sigh... you seem to also be an expert at missing the point.
Then you didn't make your point very plain.

You didn't respond to my comment about letterboxing. You can't be OK with one and not the other.

Whatever aspect ratio it was shot in should be the aspect ratio that is displayed. If you want to view 4:3 as 16:9, without stretching, then use the zoom control on your TV to blow up the 4:3 to fill the screen.

Let me add this: You'd be very happy to take a great movie classic, like Gone With the Wind, and crop the top & bottom in order to fill your 16:9 screen.

MrVideo.. I understand what JD is getting across. It's a challenging one for people whom are hyper analytical and intuitive based, and NOT into "Instincts" at all. As said to my Girlfriend to myself, and myself to her.. Haaa! Maybe this will get across. When you see stuff outside the Camera Eye it's not recorded, and a producer sees those. Attempts to get as much as possible into the shot. S/he knows what's outside of the lines on the Camera..but we Don't...unless we watch the "Making Of". If you're really anal about it all..you can become so fixated on the differences between the resolutions that you miss the content that's actually there.

Not a random decision.

I had a real problem with Letter box and not...for a few years. With Betamax, VHS, and DVDs. When I discovered that Letterbox _actually_ included the entire scene as the maker intended, I was Goooooood...even though I had to look a bit closer. I could "see" everything, not anymore P&S, errmm...stuff anymore.

Nothing is truly random and nothing is pre-planned on a huge level, but for the scope of most people..people R.I.P. and things happen by "chance" and everything is pre-determined. -- When you resize, is what you want still there IN the new size? Or is something cut from the image?

Sigh... you seem to also be an expert at missing the point.

Haha...aren't we all...at times.

He means there are differences between Film and TV in respects to cropping.
IMHO, one is not more deserving over the other.

I'd love to be able to take a movie that includes shifting aspect ratios and run it through BD Rebuilder having it reencode the video, so that the end result is a fixed aspect ratio.

An example would be a movie in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio where in just a couple scenes the aspect ratio opens up to 1.78:1. Would love to be able to reencode the video so that the entire film is in 2.40:1 instead, the IMAX portions above and below the 2.40:1 portion being replaced with black bars as is the case with the rest of the film.

I watch movies using a front projector and 150" 1.78:1 projector screen. For aspect ratios north or south of 1.78:1 I mask down to the projected image area with black velvet masking. I'm not interested in leaving unused portions of my projector screen unmasked for the entire length of a scope film because for a couple minutes during the film the aspect ratio jumps to 1.78:1.

Curious to learn how feasible such an option might be for BD Rebuilder or if anyone knows, how I might go about accomplishing the same with other tools out there.

@lowpro
BDRB has the possibility to add avisynth scripts. Assuming your source is 1920x1080, try
crop(0,120,-0,-120) #1.78 to 2.40
addborders(0,120,0,120) #letterbox (mask) for for blu-ray compliance

(It works in avisynth, I didn't try to include it in BDRB)

An example would be a movie in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio where in just a couple scenes the aspect ratio opens up to 1.78:1.
In case you didn't know it, the true IMAX aspect ratio is 1.44:1. That means it is cropped to fit the 16:9 width. If the movie release was done correctly, it would have pillar bars. I'm sure that the executives of the movie studios considered that it would be too jarring to those buying the Blu-ray releases. So, cropping 1.44:1 to 2.40:1 means throwing away a lot of the image. That said, that is what happens when the movie is shown in a regular theater.

I'm currently not a happy camper with IMAX. Both Dark Phoenix and Spiderman: Far From Home are both available in IMAX 3D, which means a larger image (I think). But IMAX, in their stupidity, has decided that my local IMAX theater will not get either movie in IMAX 3D. The local theater management are not happy and have had trouble getting in touch with IMAX to bitch. So, I watched Dark Phoenix in a regular 3D theater and will be doing the same with Spiderman. IMAX will not be getting my money.

Stupid thing is that it really doesn't cost them any extra to ship a 3D HDD to the theaters, as they get the HDDs back. Yes, IMAX still ships HDDs as they do not trust shipping movies via Ku satellite, even though no regular movie has ever had the encryption broken.

I have 2 versions of same movie in UHD and BluRay. And i want to have a UHD version replacing one subtitle by the bluray subtitle.
Can this be done in BD Rebuilder ?
I tried to demux the UHD on BD Rebuilder and got an audio file error. Any other program for demux ?

One issue. I have Close Encounters in 3rd Kind UHD and the original does not play on my Oppo. It does not pass the menu start up. Any software that i can use to check commands,... ?

Are you able to receive PayPal donations nowadays? No, unfortunately. They've blacklisted me (unfairly I might add) forever. I argued that nothing in BD-RB and DVD-RB violates their policy until I was blue in the face -- but I might as well have been arguing with a stop sign. It still says "stop" no matter how legitimate your disagreement might be.

You have nothing to be sorry for......we appreciate your time and effort to make BD Rebuilder better. If you need any assistance, please say so. I have two Ryzen 7 systems that are very good at encoding videos.

I'm having problems with Sin City, movie only. It may have to do with a feature called Cine-Explore. When I play the .mkv file it plays the movie but also displays comic book pages during the movie, I think its a feature that can be turned on while playing the blu-ray, may be part of the Cine-Explore option. When I play the blu-ray movie with no added features it just plays the movie, thats what I want, just the movie with out the Cine-Explore features. I've encoded both playlists but I get the same result.

The algorithm to find the main feature is pretty good, but there is no flag anywhere that says "Pick me, I'm the one.". So BD-RB probably selected the wrong playlist. It's rare, but it happens. Just go to the MODE menu and select "Other Movie-Only Playlist", and pick a different playlist.

Don't know how that's possible -- there has to be a playlist for the movie. Are you positive you tried both?

Did you try a playlist that is 2h 4min long

There are only 2 playlists. Both playlists are 1:53 in length.
