@larrsz It should be in the same folder as "BDREBUILDER.EXE"...
Found it:
"C:\Users\admin\BD-RBV03705\BD_Rebuilder\tools\x264.exe" "V:\PROCESSED DVDS\DVD1\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS" --preset medium --b-pyramid strict --weightp 1 --slow-firstpass --qpmin=0 --sar 40:33 --crf 20 --level 4.0 --qpfile "V:\PROCESSED DVDS\DVD1\WORKFILES\VID_00000.CHP" --sar 40:33 --aud --nal-hrd vbr --pic-struct --vbv-bufsize --keyint 24 --min-keyint 1 --ipratio 1.1 --pbratio 1.1 --vbv-maxrate --threads auto --thread-input --stats "V:\PROCESSED DVDS\DVD1\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS.264.stats" --output "V:\PROCESSED DVDS\DVD1\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS.264"
Looks like it IS calling x264.exe. This has to be something I am doing. I think I need help on the proper settings for the alternate output...:stupid:

Does the Creation time of LASTCMD.TXT match with the time you get the "encoder failure"? What about my idea of looking at Task Mgr to see if HCencoder is being launched?
You do understand yes, that DVDs can only be MPEG2-encoded and not x264. I would try it on my own system but it is busy atm.
I don't think there is anything more complicated to the settings than selecting Movie-Only Backup in Mode, then Alternate Movie-Only Output, and finally Settings > Output Options > Target Size BD-5 (DVD-5).

Yes, its time stamp is the same time as my last trial at encoding to DVD. And, yes, I understand that x264 is for mp4 encoding and HCenc is the mpeg2 encoder.
Just for another go, I just changed the alternate output mode to mkv and it fails as well- is x264 the encoder also used for the mkv copntainer- if so, I am not sure what's going on?
I have to be doing something wrong on my end.

If I go to the tools folder and start HCEnc, it opens fine, but it errors out and closes after 10 seconds.
Mine doesn't "error out" but it closes like yours. This seems very odd. A clue? I dunno. Also, my W7 x64 installation shows padlocks on all the exe and dll files in that folder--I wonder what that's about...???
re: mkv mode it does certainly appear that x264 is used for those (options become available).
EDIT: re my "padlocks" it seems my C:\BD_Rebuilder folder and subfolders (and all files) are marked as "Read Only" by WIndows and I can't seem to unlock them. Any chance yours are the same?
And regarding the "close after 10secs" I guess that's simple: we've invoked HCencoder without giving it any settings to use.

Well, I haven't used BD-RB for quite a while (had to download the latest) nor have I tried the BD-to-DVD conversion, but it seems to me BD-RB wants to invoke HCencoder.exe from the Tools folder, and it's failing. Do you have any rogue installations of HCencoder on your PC?
Try also placing a line in your .INI file:
SHOW_ENCODER=1
maybe that will expose something. Maybe too open Task Manager and see if HCencoder appears there (when BD-RB says "Reencoding: VID_00001"). Look again at your LASTCMD which should be a Hank's command not x264. The HC command line isn't stored in LASTCMD.TXT.

Mine show as read only, but permissions seem OK- no different than any other files. I am on Vista x64.

The HC command line isn't stored in LASTCMD.TXT.Thanks. Still, doesn't it seem odd that larrsz is generating this file (and with x264) when he errors-out on "encoding"?
Not sure about my "padlock" question except when I copy BD_Rebuilder folder from C: to D: the padlocks go away. Copied back to C: and they're still gone. Good. I will try the "make DVD" myself later.
larrsz my final thought til then is to try yourself to DL Hank's Encoder and rename/replace the one in BD_RB Tools. Maybe a permissions issue of some sort, given jdobbs renamed it for his zip package.

Thanks but I already tried that based on one of your earlier posts. I replaced the exe with the latest from Hank's site and it does the same thing. I changed it back- same.

Not to hijack the thread, but as an FYI, I am reencoding a BD to BD-9 and it is flying by a-ok. I really wanted to make some DVDs for the car since I no longer buy DVDs, but it looks like I'll have to use another program. I won't post again until and (IF) there are any suggestions about what could be happening with the alternate output mode. I still wonder if there is something I am not setting right. Is there by any chance a wiki or guide to that function? Odd that the BD to BD9/5 is working fine.

More "bad news" larrsz, in that my system is happily churning-away at a DVD-5 right now. In WORKFILES is placed an HC.INI file, and I can open the encoder window and see it marching through the frames.
Does BD-RB even generate the HC.INI file before the "encoder" error?
As for a guide, it's no more complicated than I stated a few posts ago.
One final thought: try BD_Rebuilder dir at the C:\ (root dir) level.
Otherwise my log looks just like yours, so I think your settings are probably correct:

Note after I aborted HC.INI disappeared from the WORKFILES dir. BTW where have you asserted your Work directory? nm I'll look it-up in your INI file. OK, it's V: where presumably you have lotsa space and all the good write permissions... :o

If you have not tried deleting the BD-RB.ini, try that and let BD-RB generate a new one. Better yet, delete the entire folder and unzip a new one and start fresh.
Also, as laserfan suggested, place this entire unzipped folder in C:\. Then try running the BD_Rebuilder.exe from there.
Do not make any manual edits to the configuration file, only run BD-RB and make selections from within it's GUI.

Maybe a permissions issue of some sort, given jdobbs renamed it for his zip package. I see nothing that gives the impression he is using X264... the LASTCMD.TXT files just has the command that was last used with X264 -- not necessarily the one being used for this encode.
As for your recommendation -- unless he is really familiar with HCEncoder I wouldn't recommend trying to do it manually. If he does he should use the HC INI file generated by BD-RB.

I even downloaded the latest beta zip file again and extracted it to C:\
I made no changes to it at all and ran inspect- recieved all "OKs"
I then ran it as administrator just to be sure and tried again with the same result. so, as jdobbs said, it must be my system. If anyone can think of anything else, let me know- otherwise, it still works great at what I originally downloaded it for and certainly worth the donation I made several times over. I have other programs to make DVDs.
No worries- and thanks for all those trying to help. I am still thinking it is some kind of rights issue with HCenc but who knows? After all , it IS Vista.:)

@jdobbs:
Not sure if it is possible, but this program has moved so far ahead that I think it needs its own forum section rather than one long thread. My issue alone took so many posts it could easily be its own thred. And again I appologize for the number of posts for something that is apparently only my issue.
Just a suggestion.

The one thing that might affect that would be the addition of HD Audio settings to the checks for resuming -- are you sure it hasn't changed between the two starts? I'll look at it and make sure it is working correctly.
I have not seen any resolution discussed on this issue. I have done somewhere between 70-80 backups (I am in the S's) and the only problem I have had in many months is a failure in Phase 2 with a "unable to build file structure" error. In the past I have always just pressed the "backup" button and let it restart phase 2 and 90% of the time it will just continue and complete. But, with 37.05 the restart comes up with a dialog box that says the path is not empty and asks if I want to delete. If I click NO, it aborts, and if I click YES, it starts over from the beginning. I have made no changes to any settings...just left everything alone and pressed the Backup button. Thanks...

Sorry you can't get it working--the idea did/does make so much sense i.e. "making DVDs from myBD-9 backups vs. the originals" given the backups are very (much) higher quality than the intended conversion-to-DVD, yet their size is half to a fourth that of an original BD program. Oughta make a DVD in a much shorter time period than using the original. :)

Great software; have performed scores of successful rebuilds to BD. However, as I have a media client now I would prefer mkv output.
On 3 different discs while trying to create mkv files I'm getting the same error: failure to re-encode the video.
Strangely, if I then change the output mode to Movie Only, it works perfectly. Note that all other settings remain completely unchanged.
This is a log file showing 3 attempts on one of the discs:
the initial failed mkv attempt
the second attempt, a successful BD rebuild
the third attempt is another failed mkv

If you need to resume a previous attempt, try using the same BD-RB configuration file but with the previous BD-RBv37.04. Remember all settings, audio, subs, etc... must be exactly as they were initially set for the original backup.
jdobbs is aware of this. :)

First - fantastic software. I have been using it since v.0.34.04 and LOVE it. I have made a donation as well.
I just downloaded v0.37.05 and it fails on the movie 2012 (ripped with anydv to hard drive).
I tried falling back to v.37.04 and it works perfectly on the same rip.
I'm not sure what you need me to post but judging from the other threads here's:

Has anyone copied Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix ? I have copied Harry Potter 1 - 4 with no problems.
when I go to open the file on my hardrive I get "Selected source is not BD format" That is in movie only mode.
Now if I put it in full backup it opens, but shows over 5 hours of time?? If I try to run it it says "Target to small" to 25 gb disc.
I don't get it!
I re ripped it to the hardrive 3 times, that didnt work, AnyDVD HD 6.7.8.0
went and got a new disc same thing.
BDinfo shows 2hrs 18 min, and it will play in TmT 3
Looking for any ideas ?
Thanks

Hi all,
Just did a full backup of Fantasia (Region A) commercial BD. I burned it to a 9 gig DVD+R DL. When I try to play it in my LG BD390, it refused to play it because it was "the wrong region". It plays fine on TMT.
I have made a couple of dozen movie-only AVCHD disc and they have all played fine (does AVCHD even have regions?) Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching for region and 'wrong region' but nothing was applicable. I am using ANYDVD to rip and IMGburn to burn. Is there some setting that I need to make to set the region? Thanks.

If you need to resume a previous attempt, try using the same BD-RB configuration file but with the previous BD-RBv37.04. Remember all settings, audio, subs, etc... must be exactly as they were initially set for the original backup.
jdobbs is aware of this. :)
I did try .04 and .03 and got the same results. The only thing I was able to do was use .04 and start it all over again. It was successful.

Hi,
how can I select an angle if the source BD offers multi-angle? RTFM - I but I didn't found anything.. Is there such a feature? I would expect an item in "MODE / Movie-only Playlist"...

Thanks... I've fixed it for the next release. I'd implemented the HD_AUDIO with a bit of a logic error.

Hi,
how can I select an angle if the source BD offers multi-angle? RTFM - I but I didn't found anything.. Is there such a feature? I would expect an item in "MODE / Movie-only Playlist"... Right now BD-RB it selects the first angle. I'll have to add an angle selection. Angles are fairly rare in Blu-Ray. Most of the time alternate playlists are used since they can do pretty much the same thing how angles are typically used.
I'll just add some additional choices to the playlist selection (add the angle to the end of the selection).

Sorry for the slow responses... I was working on my rooftop internet connection a few days ago, and the ladder collapsed when I started to come down - broke some bones along with and my pride. I've been hobbling around on crutches... and my will-to-work hasn't been at its highest level.

Very sorry to hear of the mishap, I hope for a fast recovery from the fall. I can only hope that you have a good medical plan cause such a fall around here can set you back about 25k. I have to ask if the "rooftop internet connection" was satellite internet? I had always thiought that the upload had too much lag to be worth it, did they finally fix that? At any rate hope you get well quickly and I will send a dination to help defray the "exorbitantly high hidden cost" of your internet service. thanks again for all the hardwork, worknstiff

It's a localized 4G wireless connection. I was straightening out some wiring that comes down from the antenna because we'd has a few days of warmth and the snow had melted.

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong thread, but I simply want to thank Mr. Dobbs for creating an outstanding video software. I'm relatively new to useing BD Rebuilder.
I thought that I'd like to try to see if Peter Jackson's extended version of KING KONG Blu Ray would work with BD Rebuilder. Yes, I realize that this film is 3 hours and 20 minutes long; I had my doubts about whether it would fit on a 4.3 gig standard dvd. Surely there would be tons of pixelization, artifacting in the final compression. But, I thought, hey.. ya never know unless you try~.
I downloaded and installed the latest beta of BD Rebuilder (Ver. 37.3 at the time of this project), set it to the HIGHEST 2 pass level, with a target of BD-5; with AC3 448 audio. (I used DVDFAB HD Dycrypter to decrypt the movie, no problems there.) I have a new Dell Inspiron 560, with an Intel Duo Core 2, three gig processor, and 4 gigs memory. The entire process took about 14 hours to complete. I then burned the project to a Verbatim standard 4.3 blank DVD with Imgburn.
.. While BD Rebuilder was "cooking", I took the opportunity to watch the original Peter Jackson's extended KING KONG blu ray for comparison purposes; watch the original, then compare the quality of the backed up copy to the original.
Later, when BD Rebuilder was done, after Imgburn finished the burn, I placed this Extended KING KONG back up disc into my Insignia NS-WBRDVD player, to watch on my 40 inch Samsung 630 LCD.
I was simply amazed. More than amazed. FLOORED might be the better word. The back up copy was EXACTLY the same as the ORIGINAL. I simply could not see any signs of artifacting, or pixelization anywhere. And I specifically looked for them. I saw that BE Rebuilder encoded the bit rate at 2,340, it still has the AC3 6 channel audio english soundtrack, and english sub title. I EXPECTED this experiment to have tons of problems, but BD Rebuilder did a marvelous job. This is simply terrific software, Mr. Dobbs. Thank you !
I DO have a question. I see in the BD Rebuilder settings, that there is an option for STANDARD dvds to be RESIZED to either 720P or 1080P. I'm somewhat skeptical..surely a standard 480I dvd can't be converted into a High Definition 1080P blu ray..so, what exactly does this option do? What is the quality of the finished projects like? Just curious.
Thanks again, Mr. Dobbs, for all the outstanding work you've done in creating BD Rebuilder!
I pretty much want to echo everything said above, I also did a similar test but I used Avatar, and I already told myself that it was probably going to look very bad, but I really wanted to test encoding that movie down to BD5 for my little Boy, I have a Quad Core PC with 8 GB's RAM so it didn't take to long to try it out, while I was testing it on my 65" Mits HDTV my oldest Son stopped over and commented on how Avatar really looked friggin great, after I told him it was an encode on a single-layer DVD'r we were both in shock LOL, jdobbs you have a kick ass piece of software here that a lot of us really love, THANK YOU very much.
I do have a question regarding the standard definition upscaled to either 720 or 1080 though, this is only for standard definition video on the Blu-ray right? we can't just open a standard DVD with BD-RB can we? also, would you be so kind as to give an example of how BD-RB upscales the video using Avisynth, just curious how this is executed.
Sorry for this post not being a bug report, so far I have come across none, and I read the above and just had to share my Avatar experience.

@thegame
It just uses Spline16Resize(). It also uses a deinterlacer if the source is interlaced and the output is 720p. 720p also requires frame doubling. Personally I think going to 1080 is better -- as the video rate is lower and BD-RB will convert it to 23.976fps progressive when the source has pulldown.

I honestly do not know if this is a bug - or I am doing something wrong, or the program just doesn't support this.
When processing a blu-ray title to "movie only alternate output" = DVD9 or DVD5, I cannot seem to retain any subtitles.
For example, I am working with a swedish title that has both swedish and english audio tracks, and english subtitles.
Both the audio tracks are retained, but the english subtitles are not making the trip to the output DVD structure.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yesterday I started getting this error. I happens at the end of the 2nd pass if and prior to the audio being recoded. When I close the window the encode continues successfully.

If it keeps doing it I will restore it to pre SP2 and see if it goes away.
It's not a big problem unless it's a batch job
