jdobbs,

First of all, I must say that this is a great tool for us encoders! I've been using it for a while now with very little problems. I recently stumbled upon a bug or two and want to report them, as well as, a request or two if that's ok. FYI, all of this information is regarding taking an original BD50 and encoding it down to a BD25.

Possible Bugs:
1. I just did the Mummy 2 and 3 which both have DTS Express for audio, as well as, including a Dolby Digital track for commentary. After BDRebuilder was done with each job it gave the commentary track the wrong ID (mPID) making the track hidden and not playable. I was able to easily fix it on each disc by changing the mPID in BDedit for the commentary track to one number lower than assigned by BDRebuilder therefore un hiding the track and making it functional again. I believe that BDRebuilder assigned the commentary tracks an mPID number that was after the DTS Express audio rendering it hidden. For instance, in the Mummy 3 it gave the commentary track an mPID number of 1102 (I believe if memory serves me right) which BDinfo stated that it was hidden. I then changed it to 1101 which un hid the track making it function normal again. It is also worth noting that I removed all audio language tracks that weren't English.
2. I use the option "Quick Encoding on Extras" with settings "QUICK_USE_QUALITY=1" and "QUICK_CRF=26" in BDRebuilder.ini. BDRebuilder is supposed to use one-pass CRF encoding on extras therefore reducing the extras significantly enabling more space to go towards the main movie title but in many cases it does two-pass encoding (same method on main movie) causing me to manually encode many parts of the disc by hand as they didn't get the proper encoding technique applied to them. After I encode the extras I then have to reencode the main title again to get it the proper size/bitrate that it was supposed to be. In a lot of recent movies extras are in 1080p with high bitrates so maybe BDRebuilder is getting confused?

Suggestions:
1. In many movies there can be a lot of extras and having to right-click to blank many VID's can be very tedious at times. I recently did a film where I had to blank 50 or more VID's. Would it be possible to enable BDRebuilder to use a keyboard key such as "b" on the keyboard when we have a VID selected in BDRebuilder to blank it therefore making it more efficient/faster to blank VID's?
2. This suggestion should help with possible bug #2. In seamless branching titles it's impossible to use "Quick Encoding on Extras" as BDRebuilder will encode many of the main movie VID's as extras. Would it be possible to enable the user to tell BDRebuilder what VID's are the main movie and what VID's are extras so that way the main movie would get high quality two-pass encoding settings applied to it while the extras would get the QUICK_CRF settings applied to them? It can be a hidden option just like blanking if you want. One method to possibly employ would be to right-click/use key "e" on keyboard on a VID and mark it as an extra and anything that doesn't have the extra flag assigned to it would get marked as main movie. This would help a lot of us users out tremendously if this feature was available. I can't stress enough how much this feature would help a lot of use out. :)

Thank you very much for your time and this great program of yours! :)

I'm confused. I though you were talking about audio/subtitle selections that were being unchecked...

Those I have unchecked (deselected for inclusion) are coming-back again as Included.

BD-RB in Edit mode, with English checked under "Audio Langs to Keep" under Setup: In the Feature, de-select any of the "extra" English audiotracks, then Save as Project. Quit BD-RB. Launch BD-RB again and the Open Project i.e. the .epr you just saved. The audio track deselected before is selected again.

This same issue exists for the Subtitles i.e. de-select a sub and save the project, reload the project and the sub is selected again.
Well I thought I was clear but will try again: For example, in World War Z deselect (change to red X) the Descriptive Audio Service track (eng). Save to Project. Come-back later and Open that .epr. The Red X is gone and the DVS track is selected for inclusion again, wasting bits on this unwanted track.

Either running the project or including in Batch would not yield the desired result. It appears that the Setup checkbox "keep English..." always trumps the individual selections made under each video, or that the individual track selections are not included in the .epr.

So I can't go-thru and edit a movie to Save as Project and come-back to it later (and trust my settings), nor can I use Batch mode it seems.

@laserfan

I'm glad to see someone else is noticing that with edit, then Save the Project then load it again, and the edit(s) aren't kept.

BLANKED=00000011100 is being saved for Project. I haven't used Batch before. If I add a Project to Batch, it's saved there. Loading a Project doesn't retain, but the Batch profile does. Even if I exit BD-RB and reload. Batch is still there. Interesting. Okay, I'll do some more testing..

I have. Figured there was a reason for it. Haven't given it much thought. The way I run jobs, it's rare.

I updated my post. I rarely save Projects either because of all the other testing and using I've done with it. There are times when it WOULD be nice. Now that it seems Batch retains it, hehe, I'll try it as "Save Project". ;-)

Good suggestion, +1.
I am not sure whether it's a bug in the current version. There is just nothing which tells BDRB whether a file is an Extra, which leaves some uncertainty with the automatic decision.

I thought we were talking about audio/subtitles that were changed from the initial automatic selections -- not blanked titles...

Reencode of SALT (has DTS Express audio) showed no errors but when playing back on PowerDVD10 or Panasonic DMP-BD85 standalone there is NO English Master Audio.
I tried Salt myself yesterday and had a similar problem to the above post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1622155#post1622155) (and no LOG errors for me either) from late March v0.43.06 which AFAICT was never responded to or resolved, although I did find jdobbs that you said you'd done Salt w/o issues. Did you check that the DTS MA track was properly selected on playback for each of the three versions? None of them work for me.

I used "Movie & Menus (Auto-blank Extras)" and blanked some more things (trailers) before running, although for the main feature(s) I left all English audio & subtitles selected. But when I play it back, the audio track played is a 2-track 192kbps stereo track, not the DTS MA track, despite that according to MediaInfo these are all in the right place in the various .m2ts files.

Any ideas?

laserfan, it could be the same problem as I was having with my audio commentary with DTS Express audio. I didn't get an error as well with the two discs mentioned above. You might want to try to look at the mPID of the DTS-HD.MA audio to see what it is. BDRebuilder was consistently giving the audio commentary the wrong mPID number for my two discs as mentioned above. If that's what's wrong then it's really really easy to fix and should only take literally a min to fix in BDedit. When BDRebuilder gave the audio commentary the wrong mPID number for the commentary there was no audio as just like you were mentioning as the track was hidden.

For reference go to and look at possible bug #1 to get an idea of what I'm talking about:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1648474#post1648474

If you don't know how to use BDedit I might be able to give you some pointers on what to do. Changing the mPID number of the DTS-HD.MA audio track isn't that hard.

BTW, if BDRebuilder did give the DTS-HD.MA track the wrong mPID number and made it hidden you'd easily see this in BDinfo if you load the disc in it. You don't need to do any scans just load the disc. If it's hidden, it'll be indented with an asterisk noted that it's a hidden track.

P.S. I looked at your post back from march and these comments (to me) are a pretty good indicator of the wrong mPID number problem.

Next, (from SALT Main Menu) I selected English Stereo but playback is English Audio Descriptive Service.
Next, I selected English Audio Descriptive Service but playback is Filmmakers Commentary (which is actually from movie menu's Special Features ).
Although I reencoded English only audio, I figured I'd follow the pattern so I next selected French Master Audio but playback is English Master Audio (on PowerDVD only. NO audio on standalone).

It's as if the audio tracks are not linking properly to the movie's Main Menu.

I can't be certain without doing the disc myself but it can easily be tested in BDedit. One thing to note, it's always good to backup the mpls file (main movie mpls in this case) that you're going to modify in BDedit as a precaution. I know BDedit backs up the file anyway but I like to have my own backup as well.

I updated my post. I rarely save Projects either because of all the other testing and using I've done with it. There are times when it WOULD be nice. Now that it seems Batch retains it, hehe, I'll try it as "Save Project". ;-) I just looked at it, and "Save Project" adds that same line (as it should)... but I'll do some testing.

@Audiophile1178

I'm confused about the PID issue you're describing. I went back and read the post -- and it still isn't clear to me. You said the track had a DTS Express track and also a Dolby Digital track... but DTS Express is only used for PiP and isn't legal for a normal track. It appears you say it was 0x1100 -- that would make it a primary track, which isn't legal per the standard?? Are you sure it was DTS Express?

I can't imagine how BD-RB would assign a wrong PID, as it gives them back the same PID on a full backup -- and on a Movie-Only backup it wouldn't be aligned with any original settings so it wouldn't matter.

I'll pick up one of the Mummy movies you mentioned and see if I can repeat your issue... I'll also run SALT again using the settings laserfan posted.

Thanks a lot AP for this. SALT has 3 different "main movie" mpls (different versions) and for each of them BDEdit shows mPID of 1011 under STN. I don't know what a mPID is, but when I look under any of the .clpi I see there PID numbers that show 1011 is the Video track. The DTS-HD XLL track is shown as 1100.

How would I use BDEdit to tell e.g. the Theatrical .mpls 00004 to use the 1100 audiotrack?

FWIW BDInfo does NOT show the DTS-HD MA track as hidden. It is the first audiotrack listed, and indeed MediaInfo shows the DTS track as the first one muxed-in to the .m2ts. There it's revealed that Audio #1 track 4352 is hex 0x1100. So it all *looks* fine to me but clearly the .mpls is screwed-up in some way?

Oops in comparing the Original's first .clpi file to BD-RB's .clpi file, the video/audio tracks appear in different sequential order; for example, in the original the DTS-HD XLL hex 1100 track is number 3 on the list after the main Vid then the PIP Vid. But in the BD-RB .clpi the main vid is 1st but then next is the DTS 1100 track, and third is a DD stereo track. I'm pretty sure that stereo track is what the disc defaults to playing.

It seems I need to change the order of these--how to do that? But then too the original has 25 PIDs shown and my "blanked" BD-RB version has 17--some french and spanish tracks are gone.

I should note that the DTS audio 4352/hex1100 is consistent with the original BD numbering. If the PID is the same for both the original and the backup... then the same automatic or manual selection should follow through. I guess I need to see the disc to know what's going on. Which edition of the Blu-Ray are you using for the backup?

Yes the PIDs appear the same, just out of order (in the clpi files anyway).

Disc is US version as here (http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Deluxe-Unrated-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B0021L8V0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382371654&sr=8-1) with most files dated 10/13/2010.

Jdobbs, thanks for the reply on the issue. You're getting slightly confused. I have no idea what the DTS Express track is getting assigned as it isn't shown in BDedit. My issue is regarding the mPID number of the dolby digital track (commentary). I believe that the DTS Express track is somehow triggering this bug. I'll provide screenshots to simulate what's going on as I already fixed it and don't know what BDRebuilder originally assigned for an mPID number of this track. The screenshots below are for the Mummy 3 which has 2 PIP videos and 2 DTS Express tracks. I believe that BDRebuilder assigned the dolby digital track (commentary) an mPID number of 1102 and that's what I did in my simulation as shown below.

Original Disc:

Take notice of the last audio track (dolby digital) and you'll see that when it was assigned an mPID number of 1102 (BDRebuilder Output) the track is hidden as noted in BDinfo and wouldn't playback when selected in the menu on the disc. Once I changed it to 1101 it became un hidden and worked perfectly fine.

Yes, as listed in the .clpi files by BDEdit. Might be completely irrelevant, I dunno, this is only an observation on my part. 00011.m2ts/.clpi happens to be the first linked file in every one of the three movie versions:

laserfan, I believe that the playlist is what really controls how audio/subs behave during playback. Click on the playlist for your movie and go to the STN section. In that section you'll see Vi Au PG etc... with numbers under them. Click on the number under Au (Audio) and it'll list all the audio tracks for that playlist. I believe that the audio tracks mPID and attrib should be the same as noted in the clipinf tab as shown in your screenshot in order for everything to work correctly so compare the clipinf with the playlist to make sure that everything matches up correctly.

To change the values of the audio tracks for the playlist just click on one of the audio tracks and below that box you'll see the mPID highlighted in blue with drop down boxes to the right of it. To change the mPID number type in a different value then click out of the box and hit save but before doing that copy the mpls files for the movie to another folder to back them up just to be safe.

BTW, I'm not saying that anything needs to be changed in your case. I don't know for sure but I'm merely trying to give some info on how to change the values.

Audiophile, thanks! BDEdit needs a tutorial written; I nominate YOU! ;)

Seriously, I didn't know at all these basic BDEdit features, but I'm liking your train-of-thought here. Note the audiotracks below, where the missing/blanked audio tracks are assigned the same number 1100. But in any of the .m2ts files this .mpls is referring to the number 1100 seems to refer to the DTS-MA track.

I'm flying blind in re the 3 other eng tracks (for editing) but will muck-around and see if I can fix this by hand.

SALT mPIDs, Theatrical version 00004.mpls:

Original

1100 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, eng
1101 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1102 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1103 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, fra
1104 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, spa
1105 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng

BD-RB (with fra and spa blanked)

1101 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, eng
1102 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1103 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1100 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, fra
1100 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, spa
1104 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng

Well, I tried editing the .mpls and a Stereo 192kbps track is still first, and oddly the DTS-MA track is fourth, at least with Arcsoft TMT (my Sony player had the DTS track as the 4th selection also). Gotta dig some more.

If you are talking about Movie-only and seamless branching, the audio and subtitles you see in the one VID affects all the other VIDs. In other words, X out an audio stream in that one VID and it is automatically Xed out for all the VIDs

Actually this is not working for me.

Suppose the following:
Under setup the languages "english" and "spanish" are chosen and "limit to one track for each language" for audio and subtitle languages. When a BD which Main Movie consists of more than one VID file and contains the languages english, spanish und french is loaded only the languages english and spanish are chosen as they should. If I now add this job to the batch queue the entries audio=110110110 ... and subs= 110110110... can be found under the tab Batch > directory batch.
If I now remove the lastet entry under the tab Batch and decide to unset the spanish language for audio and subs under the tab Stream and add the job to batch queue again the entries audio and subs under the tab Batch > directory batch had changed just for one VID file and you can see something like audio=110100110... and subs=110100110...

IMHO the entries audio and subs should look like
audio=100100100... and subs=100100100

Did auf Movie-Only backup of a DVD with DVD Rebuilder and importet this backup with BD Rebuilder. After import finished just the primary audio stream (in my case english) was in sync. Other stream lost sync after about 50 minutes. In the DVD backup all audio streams are in sync over the whole movie. Actually this is the first time I recognized this kind of error.

Yup, you can see this in action on my previous screenshots where I blanked ALL other languages other than English. That's why when you remove a language and select that language in the menu it'll play the first audio language (1100) as that's what's reference in the playlist.

From what I see in your post, it looks like BD-RB did what it was supposed to do for those -- but for some reason the ACTUAL 1100 reference is off by one.

Yea, I was going to post that if he changed each mPID in the playlist down one number that it might work as it should. This would be a lot easier and only take a min to do rather than have to run the whole disc again through BDRebuilder.

Try changing it to these values and see if it works:

1100 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, eng
1101 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1102 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng
1100 DTS-HD XLL, Multi-ch., 48 kHz, fra
1100 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, spa
1103 DD, Stereo, 48 kHz, eng

Note, I believe that you said that there were three playlists that referenced the main movie so you'd have to do those edits to all three of those playlists to make sure that it works ok.

Audiophile, thanks! BDEdit needs a tutorial written; I nominate YOU! ;)

First of all, I didn't know about the mPID edits until about a month or so ago when another fellow doom9 member told me about it (You know who you are). :)

Secondly, thanks for the nomination but I hardly know how to use BDedit other than the playlist tab which I know how to use pretty well. I do agree that BDedit needs some sort of guide though as there are a lot of things that I want to do (like automatic English selection on Universal disc that ask for language at insertion of disc) as I know that it's possible but I'm clueless on how to do it. I really wish that there was some way to trace what a disc does as it's inserted into the player all the way until it hits the main menu. I think BDedit can do it but I don't know how as it's way over my head.

I thought we were talking about audio/subtitles that were changed from the initial automatic selections -- not blanked titles...

Not with me.

I was only commenting about the contents of BLANKED= not being reselected when a Saved Project is reloaded. That could also affect audio/subtitles but I haven't checked them in a while.

^^^ Probably this. I'm sure that it has nothing to do with BDRebuilder but merely a way of circumventing copying the disc. I believe that "Now You See Me" uses seamless branching which is why it's playing out of order as the disc is probably referencing a playlist that tells it to play out of order. What I have done with this issue in the past is to find the correct playlist with BDinfo and find all the other playlists that are incorrect. Take the incorrect playlists and move them to another folder outside of the Blu-ray structure. Copy the the correct playlist x number of times and rename those copies to the same numbers of the incorrect playlists. It will probably play correctly now. If playback is good encode with BDRebuilder.

Example:

Correct Playlist: 00800.mpls
Incorrect Playlists: 00801.mpls, 00802.mpls, 00803.mpls, 00804.mpls.

1. Move incorrect playlists to another folder outside of your bluray structure.
2. Make 4 copies of 00800.mpls and rename those copies to 00801.mpls, 00802.mpls, 00803.mpls, 00804.mpls.
3. Verify proper playback in software player.
4. If #3 is good encode in BDRebuilder.

Note: The above method is merely an example (made up playlist numbers) of what you'd have to do for your two discs and NOT the actual playlist numbers.

If doing a full disc back up this isn't necessary as the proper mpls is still there and used by the disc, if doing movie only then the proper playlist should be selected for the stream tab, with other movie-only playlist if need be.

I have to disagree with the full disc remark. If the copy protection wasn't removed correctly and the disc is referencing an improper playlist when you press the play button then what you need to do is replace that improper playlist with the correct one and my method as described above should work. Yes, you are correct that the proper playlist will be there on a whole disc backup but if the disc didn't have the copy protection properly removed then it'll have the playlist obfuscation problem which we had back in the day of when the "Hunger Games" first came out and AnyDVD didn't decode it properly. Everybody was getting incorrect playback of their "FULL DISC" as Fooshnik is describing. There has been discs to where there were 20 playlists for the main movie and there was only one correct playlist for the movie and all the others were the playlist obfuscation problem. Finding out which one is the correct playlist and removing all the other 19 incorrect playlists and follow the rest of my guide should fix this issue as even if a whole disc backup is referencing an incorrect playlist it wouldn't matter as you copied the correct playlist 19 times and renamed those copies to the same numbers as the incorrect playlist numbers so no matter what playlist the disc tries to access all 20 playlists are now correct.

Anyway, I was merely stating that it's most likely not a problem with BDRebuilder and made a suggestion on how to fix the issue.

BTW, jdobbs I wasn't aware that you had a feature request thread and I posted my two requests in there. I'm sorry about putting them in here as up until now I wasn't aware that there was other threads for BDRebuilder as internet searches always lead me to this thread. :)

The phony playlists, with the out of order m2ts files, isn't a copy protection per se. It is there more to mess up movie only back ups. With a multitude of similar length playlists it can make it awkward to pick the right playlist.

There is a similar type of protection, screen pass, which will play the wrong playlist while using BD-J to determine if it is a copy. I might have inadvertently misused the term screen pass for the first scenario. In this case you are right that the protection must be removed properly.

That's what I'm trying to say. If the protection wasn't removed properly and it's playing the wrong playlist then using my method will work as you're removing ALL possible incorrect playlists and replacing them with the correct playlist. I have done this a few times as needed without issue. It does work!

For a moment I thought there was something malfunctioning with Doom9's Web Page software when I saw the above JDobbs quote. I never saw a quote altered like that before till now.

Anyway... Dobbs, thanks for the IVTC_480i=n and IVTC_SELECTION=n options. They've proven a very useful combination for TiVo HD 1080i files. :D

If you are ripping with AnyDVD, by the way, you often don't have to worry about this. Much of the time AnyDVD detects the correct playlist and puts it in a file called "disc.inf". BD-RB looks at that file to see if a playlist is listed, and chooses the correct one.

In this case don't use DVD_RB as a middle man. Import the DVD with BD_RB. Sometimes a backup of a backup is not a good idea.

Already tried that but it makes no difference.

As I have done all my backups via DVD_RB so fare and have never had any sync problems, I think this is another kind of problem.

Thanks.

I am doing movie-only backups.

Playlist obfuscation. I kept trying to think of the term and it wouldn't come to me. Thanks. AnyDVD picks the correct one most of the times but every so often it will pick the wrong one. I notice that on some of these the US - Canada releases will have a different correct playlist even though all the playlist numbers are the same, apparently different parts of the US could have different correct playlists.

If it picks the wrong playlist you need to inform the folks at slysoft and provide a logfile for the affected disc so they can fix it that anydvd picks the right one

I agree, absolutely. I recently did 'Now You See Me' and it took quite a while to find the correct playlist from dozens of playlists with almost the same play length. I found that the 'obfuscated' playlists usually had repeating video segments, where a short video segment was duplicated with different m2ts file names and was then included multiple times in the playlist. I've seen this before, and now that I've got a feel for the pattern I think the next time will be quicker ;)

I realize that, however if a couple of people from my "region" have already submitted logs it may be better to be patient and wait for the Slysoft team to do its thing.

Hahaha!! Thanks. I Am (Usually...). I've also been told that many times in my life. Which is also why I can see quality differences in Video that most don't see and say is not possible. ;-) Annnnnything is possible...with focus and vibrational awareness. For more awesome insights into human possibilities...may I suggest Stan Lee's Superhumans?
