View Full Version : BD Rebuilder Beta - Bug Reports Only

That film doesn't come out here in the US until Tues, Dec 14th. I'll test it then. Can you post your BDREBUILDER.INI contents so I can try to reencode with the same settings as you and see if I can repeat it?
Also, can you post the INF file and LOG for your encode? I'm fumbling in the dark when I don't have any logs to work with.
It doesn't come out here until tomorrow but it just arrived yesterday. Unfortunately I deleted the rip on the HDD when everything seemed fine so I never checked the original in case there was a ripping error which caused the problem. However, here's the INF, which is the only file left as I've done another disc in the same directory today. The main problem M2TS is 00122.

Wow. You only have "English" selected -- but there are 8 of 11 audio tracks kept? That's unusual -- and probably the source of the issue. This appears to be a fairly small target -- but with all the audio tracks there is only 455Kbs left for the video.
I look forward to testing this one on Tuesday.

But the same applies to every chapter / part of the movie and they are okay and typically 3 to 4 time the bitrate. I would normally have ditched some of the audio tracks but with the movie made up by over 100 or so files, and wanting to keep the director's commentary, I just decided to keep everything. I have now found the log and here's the relevant bit:

That means that the original had used very little bitrate for that segment, as a proportional reduction ended up with a super small bitrate. I wonder if this is something done purposely, making a single segment be encoded at a significantly lower bitrate, but enough to get by without notice on the original? Hmmm....

LOL! I've often wondered that about some dvds. Which is why its best to use CCE/Dvd rebuilder over transcoders ;)

Interestingly, this segment is the main action / car chase / explosion part of the movie. And it's not like it's negligible -- it's 7 minutes long...
I have an idea as to how I might distribute available bitrate differently... I'll do some testing.

So i've a question.
Yesterday i did a encode of the earth Documantation.
If i set output to BD25 BD RB says a total Runtime of 3 Hours 56 Minutes. If i set the output to BD9 there is a total Runtime of 4 Hours 26 Minutes
Why?

For BD-25 backups, not all files need to be reencoded. They meet the standard for Blu-ray.
For AVCHD, they need to be compliant for the standard for bitrate, audio, etc...

Which raises an interesting question. At least to me :p
Could one create a BD-25 AVCHD compliant disk? Or would a blu ray player get confused by that currently? I guess what I'm curious about is, having hours and hours of video on a BD-25 that looks near lossless. Perhaps not lossless, but very agreeable and sharp!

Argghh... It was in your post... ok, I'm a little slow sometimes.
Four and a half hours is a lot to fit on a DVD-9, so that's a contributing factor... but I'd still hope it to be more evenly distributed than it was.

You can even create an AVCHD on a flash drive. The question would be "Why?" -- since you have more capability with the complete Blu-Ray standard (like JAVA, DTS, VC-1, etc.) and also everything that is in AVCHD.

4:24:43 (Region 2).
I did that disc in movie only mode. None of the movie segments had an exceptional low bit rate, all segments have a comparable and reasonable bitrate, bitrate spread say within 10...15% between segments.

The actual film is only about 100 minutes so not too long for movie only. The rest of the film is very good quality on a bd-9, it's just the 7 minutes of action that are very blocky.
If when you get it you can't repeat it I will re-do it with a fresh rip and check the source first, just in case it was a glitch which caused the issue with that segment.

I just did the old movie Twister to BD25 which showed pixelation in some intense scenes(dark with some lighning flashes). I got the feeling something just didn't cope with that much action on screen. I thought immediately about the 7 minutes scene you guys have been talking about. I haven't seen this behaviour before, and now I think out loud, can the new x264 or maybe the removed weightp setting be the cause of this? Probably not but as I said.. I was just thinking out loud :)
I will have a closer look at the original BD to see if I could notice this.
Keep it up JD!! :thanks:

Imagine putting an entire season of say dexter on one Blu Ray disc. Seasons with 20+ episodes might be pushing it. But perhaps not. Nero Vision does not give me the option for creating an AVCHD with BD-25 as output size. That's why I was curious. I thought it might have something to do with the AVCHD standard. Which I'm obviously not well versed on :p
Sorry about off topic. I won't do this again. Clearly I have some reading to do ;)

Sony has been doing this since DVD times, using moderate bitrates for complex chapters and high bitrates for relatively easy to compress chapters, so DVD-Rs created with DVDShrink and Co will look with really bad quality in some cases, luckily DVD-RB with bitrate redistribution or OP-VBR is immune to this "protection" (from time to time the redistribution bitrates are bigger / equal than the original ones).

Yeah thats a problem i had a few times now!
But in your case i dont understand why
BD9 is movie only, or not?
I have the same problems sometimes with my BD25 encodes.
If the Movie has more than 1 m2ts file, BD_RB encodes some parts as extras. So i've selected "Quicker encodes for extras" and so the Quality at some movie Parts is terrible and very blocking.
So if i see that the main movie has more than 1 m2ts file, i deselect "Quicker encodes for extras" and all seems fine.
My Disks with this Problems:
Wall-E -Encoded today with "Quicker encodes for extras" and some movie parts have heavy blocking. New encode with "Quicker encodes for extras" disabled = Encode is fine and i have no blocking
Inception
Salt
Knight and Day
Cop Out
I have no idea what you are doing differently -- but I can say I encoded "Inception" and "Cop Out" up one side and down the other with "Quicker" set on and off... and never experienced the issue you've mentioned.
I've also encoded "Wall-E" to death. I have to believe there is something unique going on with your system... are you using all the proper versions of the helper apps that are linked in the first post of this thread? It sure sounds like a CODEC frame serving issue -- or why would it not happen for me and others?
I would also suggest that trying to put 4 1/2 hours of high resolution video on a DVD-9 is really pushing the envelope. It's not impossible -- but it certainly is a lot to ask of even the greatest encoder.

Why? You know, I've been thinking about chaning that for a long time... the total runtime displayed is the amount that is being reencoded rather the total amount of content on the original disc. I put it there to give an idea of how much time it's going to take to encode. When you're writing to a BD-25 a lot of the content might be kept as-is, making that value a little counter-intuitive.
I think it might make more sense to say how much content of the entire disc will be written to the target so we know what kind of target we need to use rather than just showing the content that is being reencoded.
Any thoughts from others?

I like knowing which titles will be reencoded. If all titles are listed, could the ones that will be reencoded be noted, as well as the ones that will be kept as is? ( for BD-25 output ) :)

( for BD-25 output ) :) I guess I wasn't very clear. I have no intention of changing the title list, -- just the total content time display that shows in the info area at startup and in the log when an encode starts. The intent is to let you know how much total content time is going to be written to the target (which includes those not shown in the title list).

Yes, this would be welcome to me. It does make sense to recognize the entire contents on a disc for a full backup.
This will help with the decision of what media to use too, and hopefully avoid those low bitrate, too much content to backup to BD5/9 Blu-rays! :p

I converted the matrix movies from BD-25 to DVD-9, and then had dvd rebuilder/cce encode to Dvd-5(6 passes, even though it's overkill). Just for the heck of it LOL! They came out looking highly impressive. Took 4hrs each! I really should put a secondary hard drive in there. It probably would have shaved 10 - 15min off each job. I was uncertain how well and how long it would take to go to Dvd-5, so I went with DVD-9 option. Was this silly? If it were you, would you simply have BD rebuilder finish the whole job? CCE is tried and trusted, I guess that's why I did it :p

While I've always been a big fan of CCE, I think HC has gotten to a point where it is just as good -- and you likely would lose a lot more through the double decode/encode processes than you would have gained from CCE even if it were better.

I just did two blu-ray titles with the 1pass-CRF-encoding settings.
I used 720p output and CRF=18.
Inception (2:28h) with 2 audio streams (AC3 640kbit) 4,0 GB
Night and Day (1:57h) with 2 audio streams (DTS/AC3 640kbit) 4,7 GB
Can that be right?
That means, that both movie are good to compress, doesn't it?
Both look good quality wise.
The file size of the movies is even smaller than the DVDs.
I'm impressed.

Ok after afew months I have once again come back to BDRebuilder and yet still have the same issue which is audio out of sync afew chapters in. I attempted to do 'Hancock' this time and still problems, does anyone have any suggestions please as what BDRebuilder offers is brilliant if I can get it to work. I have included the log file to see if that is of any help and I do follow the install to the letter and yet still problems. Even when I run 'inspect' everything comes up as ok/passed so where is this going wrong? I have also done the encode/install on different machines and still the same problem. The only thing all machines have in common is that they are running x64 bit OS's

I don't know if this is a bug or not and unfortunately I have deleted the files because I didn't know I was having problems until I tried to play my back-up's all the way through....I have backed up three movies with the latest version of BDRB movie only all on Verbatim BD-R 25 and all three at some point in the movie will pause and jump ahead a few seconds, they may play fine for a chapter or two and then start doing it again....have I run into a batch of bad media, or is anyone else having problems like this with 36.06? BTW these are from the spindle that I have used on over 30 sucessful back-ups, and the movies were Inception, Planet 51, and Shrek Forever After.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

- [18:06:57] Multiplexing M2TS Notice in the log that there was a failure to mux VID_00133... and when it was resumed it started at VID_00146. So the questions are:
1. Why did it fail? Was it incomplete?
2. It looks like the mux completed too quickly (less than one second) when it restarted... indicating the input was incomplete.
3. Why did it not pick up where it left off instead of going on to VID_00146?
I can look at the second and third questions... unless you modified the INF between the two. But the first issue indicates something external -- like a corrupted disc or a flaky system. Are you overclocked? Are you positive you are using the helper apps linked in the first post of this thread? I ask because the problem you are seeing is indicative of an incorrect HAALI or FFDSHOW version in use.
Also what are you using to rip the source? If it isn't AnyDVD, I would download the demo and try that instead of your method.
Also, can you run INSPECT.EXE and post the results? All of these discs have been done successfully by myself and others, so something unique is at play in your environment.

Just tried the Shrek back-up it does the same thing at the same spots in the movie on both my Sony 400 disc Blu-Ray changer, and my Dell laptop....so bad media is no doubt the problem....maybe Santa will bring me a new spindle, but three coasters out of 41 perfect ones used out of a 50 pack spindle is not bad.
Did not think it was your program it has been perfect for my use so far and if you go from beta to retail I would certainly purchase....until then a donation has been made.

Why does it have to be the media? Why not a flaky burner? I've had them. So far my LG WH10LS30 is an excellent burner. My Lite-on iHES108 BD-Rom however, is only a So so reading drive. It seems to ignore read errors on occasion. So I only allow it to read Brand new BD discs. It even screwed up reading a DVD once upon a time. Given BD drives are still spendy, I only allow BD discs in them now. I was merely breaking it in when I bought it :p So far every BD-R I've thrown at the LG, has came out flawless. Though the Philips/Optical quantums may not be the best. Or at least the living room player stuck its nose up once...(Which could be due to firmware issue)

I sure do hope it's not the burner....it's just six months old, I guess time will tell.

YES I am overclocked. I am running a Intel Dualcore E5200 2.50Ghz O/C to 3.45Ghz. But it is completely stable so far as I know. Could this possibly be an issue? I have used all the versions specificed on the first page to the letter aswell as running inspect.exe with no problems also. I have no doubt that the problem is my system. I just can't figure out why :(

I just can't figure out why :( What I believe you'll find is that if you slow down your system a little, the problem will likely disappear. X264 will stress you system to the max -- a lot more than other "stress testers"... I've seen it happen many times before, usually after a couple of hours of running.

What if I were to set the priorty to low within BDRebuilder? That way the processors are not 'stressed' so to speak. My friend done the overclock and he lives in australia now. Funny you say x264 being the issue though because MeGui did not work for me either coming back with a x264 error.
This is the inspect report aswell.

This confirms the suspicion! :p
No setting will change the fact that your system is not running stable with such a high stress application like x264.
You could try opening the side of your PC case, set up an external room fan and blast away, seeing if you can make it run cooler.
The real solution is to back off your over-clocking to get your processor running stable, since you need stable to get reliable BD-RB or any x264 backups.

Ahh yes. X264, the ultimate way to test stability ;) I fear it would find a problem with my 965 overclock :S It was too easy an overclock, at a low voltage.

What if I were to set the priorty to low within BDRebuilder? That way the processors are not 'stressed' so to speak. That makes no difference whatsoever. The priority is relative to the processes running... when there is nothing competing with X264 it will still max processor(s) out -- and even if X264 wasn't only process, the combination of X264 and other processors would max out the processors.
There's nothing wrong with overclocking -- but you have to make sure you back it down to a stable level. My guess is that yours is slightly faster than it should be.

I sure do hope it's not the burner....it's just six months old, I guess time will tell.
I had an LG Blu-ray burner fail on me after only 5 months. I blame most of on burning at Max speed though. Burn at 4x to get great value out of your drive.
