Another movie I've run into that will not play once burned onto 25G BD-r is Red Cliff parts 1 or 2. Neither movie, once burned onto media, will not play beyond the surface menu. Plays extras but will not play the movie, gets hung up with black screen and then freezes.

This makes Wizard of Oz, Bourne Supremacy series (all 3 of the burns) and now Red Cliff parts 1 and 2. Not sure what the common thread between these movies are. Burns are all full backups, no fancy editing. Latest SlySoft used in each case.

Attempting to play on Panasonic BD60. Only thing I haven't tried is playing these on a different player.

Again, I've so far, seen no response to my posts so any help here would be appreciated. In all cases, there were no burn error messages showing either.

TIA

Jdobbs, thanks for your response elsewhere.

Am finally doing housecleaning and have tested my accumulated pile of burned, backed up to 25G Bd-r Optiplex media. Add to the list of "won't play on my Panny beyond the introduction screens", the Matrix series. So far, backed up Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolution, same results. Have not yet tried "The Matrix" itself, fearing the same results. It, for now, remains on my computer waiting a burn.

I know that if I put these to 50G media, the burn will work.

Will continue to pursue and take this batch of unplayable discs to another player to see if it's a Panny problem.

:thanks:

First test on v0.33.02 and something odd happened. Inspect gives "OK" for everything; no tweaks except custom size for BD-25. BD-RB running on a non-overclocked Vista 64-bit Ultimate.

Source is multiepisode anime BD50, with English and Japanese TrueHD audio and English subs.
1) Chose Movie Only
2) Chose Other Movie Only output and ticked the box for 1080p MKV.
3) To encode a single episode only, I then selected Alternate Movie Only, and chose first of the displayed playlists (00031 - 00:23:22 - 4 chapters)
4) Deselected English TrueHD.
5) Clicked Backup.

Once A/V streams were extracted, BD-RB tried to encode audio. A DOS window was kept open in the background for approx. 15 minutes for the Dolby Digital encode @ 640kbps. Progress was at 0% the whole time, but the value for "q" kept changing slightly every couple of seconds. Suddenly the DOS window disappeared (while still showing progress at 0%) and BD-RB reported it's Multiplexing M2TS. Then it reported Phase One complete and tried to enter Phase Two - Rebuild. Here's the log which shows what happened:

- Input BD size: 4,64 GB
- Approximate total content: [00:23:22.025]
- Target BD size: 23,49 GB
- Windows Version: 6.0 [6002]
- MOVIE-ONLY/ALTERNATE OUTPUT mode enabled
- One Pass ABR Mode enabled
- Audio Settings: AC3=0 DTS=0 HD=1 Kbs=640
[22:26:10] PHASE ONE, Encoding
- [22:26:10] Extracting A/V streams [VID_00038]
- [22:28:28] Reencoding: VID_00038 (1 of 1)
- [22:28:28] Collecting video information
- [22:28:28] Keeping original video (no reencode)
- [22:28:28] Reencoding audio tracks (if req'd)
- [22:42:20] Multiplexing M2TS
[22:42:20]PHASE ONE complete
[22:42:20]PHASE TWO - Rebuild Started
- [22:42:20] Rebuilding stream 00038 [1 of 1]
- [22:42:20] Building ALTERNATE OUTPUT Structure
- ERROR in attempt to mux (MKVMERGE)
[22:43:47] - Failed to REBUILD

BD-RB seems to get a bit confused with all these demands made on it.

@jdobbs - Added some control code to prevent certain options from creating non-compliant streams.
- Updated the included version of X264.EXE to the latest release (r1510).

Does this mean that "HD-DVD Compliant" is now (once again) compliant, despite the X264.exe version change?

@jdobbs;
I updated to the new recommended ffdshow you listed on the first page, even though all was working fine for me for all movie types, but to try and get my setup to agree with your inspect tool.
Inspect tool shows:
- Windows Version: 5.1 [2600]
- AVISYNTH Version: 2.5.8.0, not recommended version
- HAALI Splitter: Ok
- FFDSHOW: 3326, Ok
- FFDSHOW VC-1 set incorrectly: [0]
- FFDSHOW MPEG2 set incorrectly: [5]
- FFDSHOW AVC set to "libavcodec": Ok
- BD Rebuilder v0.33.0.2, Ok
- X264: Ok
- AFTEN: Ok
- FAAC: Ok
- MP4BOX: Ok
- WAVI: Ok
- TSMUXER: Ok
Since I am using XP Pro and have WMP11 installed, why does VC-1 say "set incorrectly: [0]", and what should the setting be? Do you now want VC-1 set differently if using WMP11?
What setting do you want for ffdshow for mpeg2, since I receive - "FFDSHOW MPEG2 set incorrectly: [5]"? Libmpeg2 has been my setting and has always worked, but what is your preference?
Since Avisynth 2.5.8.0 has been out for quite some time and not failed me yet, is there a reason you do not recommend it? Any testing on your part to include it in the recommended list?
I would like my setup to best match yours, so if any bugs develop, it will not be because of the setup. ;)

EDIT:
OK, I changed FFDSHOW MPEG2 to libavcodec and it now says Ok.

Pardon me for this question but I would like to know if there is a max encoding bitrate limit. I have just started a encode with almost 4hrs and BD_RBLD says bitrate is 3683 kbs. Am I pushing into blockyness territory? Has anyone been able to quantify what the minimun bitrate is for best picture quality? Is it affected by how many action scenes the movie contains or is there just a magic number to shoot for. Sorry to interupt but would like too know before I waste my time only to find out I maybe need to trim an episode or two from the disk I'm working on. thanks Jdobbs for the great program, it's is working for me (movie only) 100% of the time.

PS: just wanted to throw in that Toy Story 2 has some kind of glitch that causes the 1:32 minute runtime to change too 1:38 after BD_RBLDR puts the 23 part mpls back together while doing a Movie Only rebuild. I tried this with Clown_BD also with the same results, but the movie plays fine and ends at the 1:32 mark even though the time says 1:38. It has no problems with audio sync or skipping. I'm not sure why it does that -- but it is encoding ok, so you should ignore it.

Are you sure you didn't stop the audio encode somehow? That would result in exactly the error you received.

Yup, I'm sure. I tried to run the encode a couple of times, with exact same results.

Yup, I'm sure. I tried to run the encode a couple of times, with exact same results. I just tested it following your steps on one of my "Firefly" discs. It worked fine on that one. What disc are you attempting to backup? I noticed also that you said you chose the episode in 00031, but the encode was of 00038...

Samurai Champloo (US). I must've gotten mixed up with playlist numbers when re-trying the encode. That means the issue was not limited to one particular playlist item. I'll do some further debugging by trying the same encode on another PC, one not running Vista.

update: Ran the same encode on a Win XP Pro SP3 32-bit. Same result, unfortunately:

I can tell you that I've done "The Wizard of Oz" in both movie-only and full backup with no issues on my Sony standalone.

@e143slime8
I've also done "The Wizard of Oz" in full backup with no issues on my Pioneer BDP-120 standalone.

Ran into a problem, been a long time since i had one, The Title Is Dr Parnasus Region B, i think the problem file(s) are AVC 1080i@25fps, audio is stereo ac3, there is a large one of these files (nearly 2 gig) later in the files list so doing a minimum file encode isnt an option, here is the Log:

Hello I'm trying to reencode the Sherlock Holmes blu-ray (region A) to a BD25, first there's an audio that I cannot select, it says it's DTS-Express, Stereo; I believe that is for the picture in picture track, well I can't select it, and when I select backup anyway, I get this:
[12:15:03] PHASE ONE, Encoding
- [12:15:03] Reencoding: VID_00181 (1 of 46)
- [12:15:03] Collecting video information

- [12:15:03] Reencoding: VID_00181, Pass 1 of 1
- Encode failed. Retrying.
- Encode failed. Retrying.
- Reached retry limit. Aborting.
- FFDSHOW Revision: (3299)
[12:15:13] - Failed video encode, aborted

I tried before with an older 'revision' of FFDSHOW and didn't work either, but worked fine with another movie (NewMoon).

Any ideas?

Hello I'm trying to reencode the Sherlock Holmes blu-ray (region A) to a BD25, first there's an audio that I cannot select, it says it's DTS-Express, Stereo; I believe that is for the picture in picture track, well I can't select it, and when I select backup anyway, I get this:
[12:15:03] PHASE ONE, Encoding
- [12:15:03] Reencoding: VID_00181 (1 of 46)
- [12:15:03] Collecting video information
- Source Video: VC-1, 1920x1080
- Rate/Length: 23.976fps, 3,485 frames
- [12:15:03] Reencoding: VID_00181, Pass 1 of 1
- Encode failed. Retrying.
- Encode failed. Retrying.
- Reached retry limit. Aborting.
- FFDSHOW Revision: (3299)
[12:15:13] - Failed video encode, aborted

I tried before with an older 'revision' of FFDSHOW and didn't work either, but worked fine with another movie (NewMoon).

Any ideas? DTS Express isn't supported yet because it cannot be demuxed/muxed by TSMUXER. It is the audio associated with PiP. Please post the entire log so I can also see what version of Windows and BD-RB you are using.

OK... but I wasn't doing a BD5/9. I was trying to encode a single episode into a 1080p MKV using 0.33.2's new output mode. I'm sure a BD25 of Samurai Champloo would come out just fine... hang on, I did do a full backup of disc 1 to BD25 to see what the result looks like; I was a bit worried about the quality since cramming 270 minutes of 1080p (even if it's anime) onto BD25 didn't sound too good. I saw some weird artefacts in the backgrounds and bitrate dropped quite often below 10mbps. I wasn't happy with the quality.

Hi, just an aesthetic bug but... I find that if I untic automatic quality settings and tic ultra high quality then when I restart bd-rb there is no option for ultra high quality anymore however the config file still shows it as a 4. I'm running win 7 x64.

Samurai Champloo isn't the best source to be referancing though as its a 1080p up-convert not a true 1080p source for animation, I would check your rips if you are getting macro blocking as my encode was identical to the source i had, you may have a bad rip. Didn't think I would see anyone on here with this anime :)

Good luck :)

Does this mean that "HD-DVD Compliant" is now (once again) compliant, despite the X264.exe version change?

Not sure....

No, it won't work with hddvdmux. I asked for some help here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=152127&page=23) and after some investigations all day yesterday it seems it is something easy to fix in hddvdmux.

Dark Shikari suggested a fix (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1388915#post1388915), so I'll try to play with hddvdmux source later (tough thing to do, since the source is a complete mess).

Yeah, I was a bit miffed when I found that out. Luckily it was on sale at Amazon so not an expensive mistake to make.

Spent a few minutes checking the rip, then got fed up and gave up on it. I might return to this with a future version of BD-RB.

Added an "Automatic Quality Settings" option to the
"Encoder Settings" menu. When selected, BD-RB will
automatically make quality selections based upon the
type and size of output.

Could you please comment on this regarding BD25 output ? I have manually set custom size to 23900 MB and BD-RB now seems to always choose 1-pass ABR.
Is 1-pass ABR the preferred output choice for BD25 as i have choosen High Quality 2-pass for every encode before (well, that was the default setting..) ? Thanks a lot for your new version. Great prog.

That is my recommendation based on the output size -- you can, however, change it by unclicking "Automatic". You'll probably see some tweaking on the automatic settings over the next couple of versions.

The version of haali is the one you have for download in the first message of this thread. I hope this is ok.

jdobbs

@MvB

The most likely problem is the resizing to 720p. TSMUXER has issues trying to do so with certain subs and crashes in the process. I'd eliminate one sub at a time until I find the one that is causing the problem.

I have this listed in my "things to do" list -- and have already begun the encoding to do the sub resize myself, I just haven't gotten around to finishing it.

As long as you have installed the HAALI from the first post you should be fine. Apparently there is some way in which a new install of HAALI doesn't completely remove the old one and the checksum routine in INSPECT.EXE sees the install as a mismatch. If you completely uninstall HAALI and then clear it's folder followed by a reinstall it should fix it and get an "Ok".

[edit] Whoops, just noticed your edit... we're on the same wavelength. :)

Another quick question:

With movies like The Godfather and Angels and Demons which have occasional subtitles throughout the movie, what is a good way to maintain them in backups or add them back in after the encoding job with BD RB is complete? I tried a backup of Godfather 2 and noticed that none of the foreign speech had subtitles.

I tried a backup of Godfather 2 and noticed that none of the foreign speech had subtitles. You have to do a full backup and make sure you have selected the correct subtitle. I personally just always keep all the subtitles so I don't have to worry about it. If doing movie-only you have to find out which subtitle is the right one, and then right-click on the subtitle in the stream list and select "Turn subtitle ON"

It is not published for download nor you'll find it anywhere around, but in the threads (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1389305#post1389305) you follow, setarip. In light of how impressive both of your programs are and, still more impressively, how they continue to expand and improve, I (and, I presume the few others who use the two in conjunction as a means of creating HD-DVD videos) am more than happy to continue making the minor adjustments required in order to be able to continue to use them for this limited purpose conversion.

Congratulations to you both for continuing, "To go where no man has gone before" ;>}
