View Full Version : BD Rebuilder Beta - Bug Reports Only

And the crashing bug in x264 has been found!
Bug was introduced in r1105 (Akupenguin's fault, even though my name's on the commit :p). Apparently, at least on the computer of our generous volunteer, r1108 was the trigger for the crash, despite it being completely unrelated.
Thanks to XhmikosR for donating about an hour of his time to torture himself with gdb and massive numbers of test builds as we narrowed down an issue so obnoxious that the crash disappeared when he ran a normal, non-debug x264 in gdb.
With the information we got from testing various potential fixes, I eventually was able to catch the bug with a combination of intuition and valgrind.
r1114 will fix the crash.
Massive grooviness... :) I just tested it on the file where I experienced it. The crash is gone. I'll include r1114 in the next BD-RB release.+
That's fantastic news!!... Thanks to you guys and XhmikosR, I'm glad you figured it out. I was feeling like I let everyone down because I failed to get anything with GDB, but in truth I was in wayyyyy over my head, lmao....:p
Thanks again guys, looking forward to r1114 in the next BD-RB release..... the newer x264 versions have been very noticeably faster on my system.
:thanks:

What's the difference between the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of X264.exe? Should we be using the 64-bit version if we are running a 64-bit O.S. (i.e. will BD-RB work better with the 64-bit version running under a 64-bit O.S.)? Also, I see that only the 32-bit version of x264 has been updated to r1114. I assume that the 64-bit version will get updated as well?

Yes you're correct in big red letters. Encoding was finished this morning and its all good. Your extreme effort of help should be useful for some here. By the way I tried bd-rb and ripbot equally and chose jdobb's app because I like it better. Even if ripbot's help seems meaningless, do we have to flame him and run him out of the section? Are one or both of you guys planning to go commercial or worried about espionage? I say let's have both freewares; they may both prove to be useful. Two heads are better than one right? I apologize for this not being a bug so technically I'm spam here...thanks again you guys rock. Peace!

I wrote BD-RB because I wanted to be able to do full backups of BD sources... with a focus on prices of BD-25 coming down and also trying to do BD-5/9. I did it because no other software (I know of) does that. I'm not out to compete with anybody or any other software. If I were only aiming for movie-only as my final goal, there are already many ways to do it (including RipBot), and I wouldn't have wasted my time reinventing the wheel.
On that note, let's change the subject... this thread is too long already, and it's getting impossible to find the reported bugs in it.

May I make a suggestion jdobbs. When you create a new release create a new thread specificity for that release. This way, any and all bugs for that release can be posted in that thread. Older releases and threads would fall to the way side. As always one should upgrade to the latest release to insure testing and development of this great program continues…

Talking of undersizing. I've noticed that of the 10 or so backups BD-Rebuilder has done, ALL have been undersized by a good 175-250mb - even when I have set the target to "8140" which is the size of a DVD9 disc.
The only time it has come close to DVD9 is when BD-Rebuilder has made an error like for example when it was incorrectly encoding 2 channel audio as AC35.1.
I have noticed that x264 sizing is extremely accurate and setting the default so conservatively really isn't required like with mpeg2 encoding for example.

Given all the variables involved in re: many menus and extras on BD discs, I'd say that was remarkably good!!???!!
MikeyBK
16th February 2009, 22:50
And even at the default BD-9 setting of around 7600 MBs, x264 does a superb job in it's output..... sure 8100 MBs sounds better on paper than 7600 MBs, but I don't think I would be able to tell the differences... :)
jdobbs
16th February 2009, 23:01
And don't forget -- that if you don't like the default sizes you can alway set it yourself with TARGET_SIZE=NNN in the config file. Eventually I'll allow a different setting for each of the default outputs (BD-5/9/25) as well. I'm conservative on output sizes -- because I know that a lot of even high-quality discs have problems in the outer edges of the disc... and when it pixelates, my software gets the blame for what is actually media issues.

Hi,
I try and try to encoded a bluray disc ripped by anydvd 6.5.2.2 on my hard disk and all the time i have this error message at the beginning. Avisynth, fddshow new one an haali is installed but i don't understand why the BDRebuilder does'nt work ?
Can someone can help me......:confused::confused:
jdobbs
17th February 2009, 01:12
I just went through that section and found something that could conceivably cause that... but I can't understand why it is just happening to certain people. That error is "type mismatch" error -- you'd think it would happen consistently.
I made a change, so maybe the next release will fix it.

But...unless I mis-read your post, even 250mb is only 3% "low"?
Given all the variables involved in re: many menus and extras on BD discs, I'd say that was remarkably good!!???!!
3% sounds very small but when it means you could afford an extra commentry track, 640k for main feature track instead of 448k...It's sorta more than "just 3%" ;)
But as jdobbs has said and I had a feeling that was the reason for his conservative choice. For people with rubbish media, I agree with him on that one. I use rubbish media myself but any disc that doesn't pass a full speed reading at 12x on the outer edge as long as disc is full goes back to the retailer :) (which seems to be about 2\3 of my current discs)

I really like this new version. I did Bourne Ultimatum
In the past I and my family have always seen some sort of difference when doing movie only onto a BD5 (I really do no care about full backup). When doing the 720p downsize I can report that it looks superb. For some reason better than full size backup on BD5. Nice going and great option.
Question I have is, why does the 720p backup look, we think, better than the 1080p backup (on Samsung 50")
nice work

nice workAt a sufficiently low bitrate, a lower resolution backup might end up looking better. BD5 might be low enough for that to be the case, at least sometimes.

My personal compliments to you and all the other members of the X264 team. It is a remarkable piece of software -- and keeps getting better.
:thanks:Thanks for the praise, and expect more good stuff soon. For everyone's information, the current pipeline contains:
1. Threaded frametype decision patch from Avail Media, written by Michael Kazmier. Preliminary tests suggest multithreading performance boosts of 20%-40% or even higher, especially with b-adapt 2 and large numbers of threads. Currently broken with VBV, which is why it is still in the pipeline ;)
2. Holger's transform overhaul. ~5% performance boost on most chips, possibly up to 10% on Conroe Core 2. Currently a total mess of code and still being cleaned up.
3. My usual horde of small-scale optimizations awaiting further testing. I'm not sure I'm entirely sane though; one of them involves a lookup table storing every possible permutation of 4x4 DCT block (2^16 entries).

You'd have to explain to me what you mean by "from HDDVD source" Also, was the original really only 8.31GB? That makes the source suspect -- mainly because I already know there are problems trying to do a second generation reecode from a TSMUXER created source (it was the root of an audio sync problem I fixed a couple of versions ago). Can I assume the source was created via TSMUXER?

You'd have to explain to me what you mean by "from HDDVD source" Also, was the original really only 8.31GB?
The original was VC-1 video and WMA audio which had been encoded in a WMV container for use on my grandson's X-box.
I then used RipBot264 to convert the WMV to MKV.
That makes the source suspect -- mainly because I already know there are problems trying to do a second generation reecode from a TSMUXER created source (it was the root of an audio sync problem I fixed a couple of versions ago). Can I assume the source was created via TSMUXER?
Yes, the 'original' source was run through tsMuxeR, in this case twice, in order to get a Blu-ray structure for feeding to your BD-RE.
I guess that was the biggest boo-boo. However, the m2ts from the STREAM that was fed to BD-RE plays fine. And original disc is now kaput due to the teenager and his friends mishandling. And I would rather not buy a new BR if that can be avoided.
Would like to see WMV source support in BD-RE if at all possible <hint, hint, nudge, nudge>.
Thanks for looking in on this. Appreciate that and a BIG :thanks: for the software.

Are you using X264 r1114? If your're still on the older version -- that's the problem and it will be fixed when I release BD-RB v0.19.2 (later today maybe?)
In the meantime, you can download the latest version of X264 from http://www.x264.nl

I have updated the first post of this thread to include a new release (v0.19.02). The changes included in this release are:
- Corrected a bug in which the wrong video type
could be inserted in the MPLS under very rare
circumstances.
- Added code to adjust subtitles accordingly when
the RESIZE 1080p to 720p option is selected.
- Updated the included release of X264.EXE to
release r1114 - which corrects the uncommon
but reported "crash" that could occur on some
computers.
- Corrected a condition in RunTSMuxer() that may
cause a runtime error.
- Fixed possible causes of runtime errors in the
audio extraction module.
- Other minor corrections and cosmetic fixes.
Enjoy.

I've used BD-Rebuilder since v0.18.07 and I have not had any problem with playback or pulldown stuttering. I have never experienced any errors. However, I think I may have used BD-Rebuilder a little differently than most people on videohelp.
I rip the original Blu-Ray disc to an image file using AnyDVD HD. I then mounted the movie ISO image using Virtual CloneDrive. I then proceeded to using TsMuxeR to strip down the movie to my liking and output it with Blu-Ray structure. Convert the structure using ISO via ImgBurn UDF 2.50.
After the above steps, I mount the stripped down movie in ISO format produced above using Virtual CloneDrive. Then I opened BD-Rebuilder, choose the mounted ISO and select "movie only". Then proceeded to backup using RB-Rebuilder.
Basically my extra steps consist of using TsMuxeR to strip down the movie and then converting it to an UDF 2.50 ISO image for RB-Rebuilder to process. This minimizes the number of tasks for RB-Rebuilder to execute, which may enhance its reliability. This has worked for me and I have never had any error or issue.
I ONCE tried using RB-Rebuilder to do the "Movie-only stripping" for me. But that resulted in a crash. Stripping the movie myself using TsMuxer prior to using RB-Rebuilder has worked for me with 100% success rate. I do not have the PS3stuttering either using my way. I did not have to use the AVCHD Patcher either.
Perhaps this has been covered, but I simply could not read every single post in this thread. However I hope my post helps those who may be experiencing problems with RB-Rebuilder.
Just out of curiosity, would a phenom II be a worthwhile upgrade from a AMD Athlon 64 x2 3200mhz for RB-Rebuilder? I notice that processing rate is terribly slow. I am not sure if a Phenom II would speed things up significantly.

The kind of error you are receiving is a "type mismatch" for a variable. How it can be a mismatch on only one system is beyond me. Is everything standard on your computer? Operating system, etc.?

[11:51:48] RunTSMuxer() 00013 12 That's two of you who've gotten this... it's a short section of code, and I can't for the life of my figure out how you are getting it. More importantly, I can't figure out how you can get it, and no one else can...

If I compile a special version for you, would you have time to run it so I can identify exactly where the problem is?

@jdobbs
I got the same RunTSMuxer() error too. I think it has something to do with regional settings (as I reported some time ago). Geronim77 might be French (assumed from the audio selection), so maybe he has Windows set to French.
I tried to set my regional settings to Swedish and English, both worked.
If you want, I can try that special version too.

I have the same problem. So that three of us...
Have tried with AnyDVD active or not.
It worked before with older version 0.17.13 but since 0.18.xx I am having this problem.
I have tried to go back with 0.17.13 but now have the problem with that version.
edit: I do have a French Windows Vista

Decided to try v0.19.01 on Mamma Mia! again. This is the one with extras that BD-RB chokes on as reported earlier in the thread. Well, in the earlier version of BD-RB the program failed on these extras but at least got thru it to the end. Now it just aborts at the first failed extra:
- [23:25:48] Reencoding: VID_00286, Pass 1 of 2
- [23:29:18] Reencoding: VID_00286, Pass 2 of 2
- [23:35:49] Video Encode complete
- [23:35:49] Reencoding audio tracks
- [23:35:57] Multiplexing M2TS
- Extracting audio/subs [VID_00287]
- [23:36:17] Collecting video information [00287]
- Video: 1920x1080, 29.970fps
- Bitrate: 3,732 Kbs
- [23:36:17] Reencoding: VID_00287, Pass 1 of 2
- Encode failed. Retrying.
- Failed again. Trying older X264 version.
- Reached retry limit. Aborting.
[23:51:32] - Failed video encode, aborted
Last time I was able to ID and re-encode the problem .m2ts files "by hand" using DG's tools, then REBUILD with BD-RB, and that worked. This time I will have to do 287, then Resume, have it abort, fix the extra, Resume, etc.
I don't have an answer for what the right way to fix this might be, so can only suggest again jdobbs that you might want to pick this one up. Not only is it a good test disc, it is actually a very fun movie (if you don't like musicals, at least your wife will love it!). :)
p.s. As I type this I recall that last night 0.19.02 was published. I will attempt to Resume with that and see if it behaves any differently.

edit: I do have a French Windows VistaFixed it. I'll post in a few minutes. All I had to do was set my system to "French" -- it was a really weird problem in which, for some reason, the type conversion was ok, except in French.

Updated the first post of this thread to an updated release. Changes for this version:
February 18th, 2008 - v0.19.04
- Corrected a bug that could lead to errors in the
ExtractAudio() and RunTSMuxer() subroutines.
- Other minor corrections and cosmetic fixes.
This was a rather annoying bug for certain users, so I thought it was worthwhile to post it immediately upon fixing...

@jdobbs
That fixed it, thank you very much! :)
I tried all the languages I mentioned in my earlier post, all of them worked:
- French (France)
- French (Canada)
- Finnish (Finland)
- Swedish (Finland)
- Norwegian (both)
My donation is long overdue, I'll get to it :)

You may want to run the task manager and check to make sure you don't have dangling instances of TSMUXER executing. I noticed that it was left executing when I got the bug. You could also reboot and clear those up.

Yeah, it did it for me too. Thanks for the tip, I'll let it to run now and see how it goes.
